Suarez and Nkunku deadline day players to watch

by .

Oh, man, too much excitement.

We’ve pretty much landed Denis Suarez. There was some worry, mostly fueled by me, that the deal was going to fail because Barca dropped the announcement of their homepage… however, there has been no noise about a failed medical.

Ornstein reckons Perisic and Carassco deals are very unlikely, but the Nkunku deal is 50/50.

So we have a wide left player who can give Emery more finesse with touch and a bit more energy moving the ball and potentially a utility midfielder who can play right back.

There is a horror thread from David Cartlidge on Suarez.

If you click into it, he basically says Emery didn’t know how to use him, the player is no more than a cog in a machine (our machine is bad), and he has issues like a lack of personality and the inability to impose himself on games.

Well, he has it all to prove at Arsenal. At least if it goes badly, we can send him back.

In other news, ESR has moved to Leipzig on loan. A bloody excellent move. Nketiah has gone to work with Jens at Augsburg in Germany. Ben Knapper working that new loans job well. GOOD LUCK CHAPS.

In footballing news, Arsenal moved back into 4th after Chelsea took a SPANKING at Bournemouth. Other good news stretched to Liverpool drawing.

For all the shrieks of ‘Emery can’t compete for top 4’, it appears that with a squad of supposedly shite players, we’re in 4th heading into February.

It’s all about coaching now. If Rafa Benitez can beat Pep, then there’s no reason we can’t. Apparently, we have the same points total as them since late August.

Just don’t play a high line… please, please, please don’t put us through that.

Right, that’s me done. I did a podcast for your ears. I’m alone.

I think the team should watch the video of the game between us and Chelsea. I was impressed to see our two strikers coming back to our own half and do the pressing. They have to do the same thing against MC. MC is going to have most of the possession. We should go for defense and then fast counter. We should not have our strikers standing up front with the back to the goal waiting for a pass. And then we blame the midfield of not providing service to the strikers. Against a strong team, the strikers have to… Read more »

Do you remember the comedian Dick Emery from the 70s
My view is Wenger had to be replaced and we could have done better than Emery
However he somehow stumbled through a 22match unbeaten run with some fantastic wins eg the magnificent performance against the Scum
Some of his selections and tactics have appeared to me as bizarre
But here we are in the top 4 in Feb
So I was just interested in your thoughts on his performance so far

Curious to see how decisive club will be if Emery finishes worse off than Wenger last season. Playing bland football.

I’m not sold on him by any stretch. Hoping its a brave new world at Arsenal with a bit of ruthlessness shown towards the mediocre.

Thought which Alexander Henry was proposing that Emery may walk this summer if not receiving decent backing from club / Kroenky in market, I don’t buy in to. Emery and his boys are on good money in the Prem, they won’t find better.

CG, You obviously don’t listen to any of Pedro’s podcasts because he explained in a recent one that Sven is leaving because he didn’t get the technical director position he was promised post Wenger because the board, not Emery, weren’t impressed with his output in the year of his employment and he was barely there, they didn’t feel he was deserving of it. You really should do a modicum of fact finding old chap before you start casting incorrect aspersions around. Bd Why would the scout be there? He would be out scouting, perhaps…. If the board as you allege were not happy with Swen- they surely can’t be happy with Raul? Why do they think Raul is performing and Swen underperforming..? Let me remind you. Swen finds dembele for Dortmund for 10 mill Raul buys Dembele for Barca for 130 mill I won’t be the only one thinking -keeping and promoting Swen and ousting Raul would have been the better move. After all he finds the players and makes the money to buy more players. Raul just spends it ( badly)… Read more »

No.We signed him because Lacazette has been thoroughly underwhelming up to that point. Raul, the guy who refused Varane and bought Jeremy Matthieu!
The guy who gazumped Roma for Malcolm whom six months later Barcelona can’t even resell at half price.
I understand that some are willing to give him the benefit of the doubts but you have to admit that his previous dealing does not inspire confidence.

Valentin,
Astounding post ,as always

Unfortunately but understandably as all football fans naturally want the best for their teams- earnestly believe Raul has the Midas Touch.

I am afraid as you have pointed out on more than a few occasions this is far from the truth.

The more research and analysis of his time at Barca shows what another appalling decision Gazidas made by appointing him into his DOF posting.

Maybe you can help me out:
Has Raul EVER made profit on a transfer?

I think . Raul – pound for pound is the worst football administrator there is around..
Is he actually capable of selling a player for few quid?

Interesting Amy Lawrence article: “Six months since Emery’s first Premier League match, a free pass at home to Manchester City that ended more or less as expected with his experimental side dominated by the serene champions, Arsenal face City again. It seems like a useful time to try to assess the level of progress. We can calculate the tangibles: they are five points better off than this time last season and two positions higher in the table having snuck a little fortuitously back into fourth at Chelsea’s expense. They are not quite so far behind the league leaders (14 points… Read more »

I was expecting more severe weather for the game tomorrow especially in light of the snow and freezing temps the UK has been having:

https://www.bbc.com/weather/2643123

Looks like a light breeze with the odd light shower and 3*

Game favours City even more if the weather forecast is correct, so my prediction of a draw seem very far fetched and in need of divine intervention.

So I’ll adopt this thinking: WTF if Newcastle can get a result, then so can we!

Goobergooner

Charlie George, You keep spouting on about the Raul/Emery power grab. Were you not around for Wenger ruling this club for years because of fans like yourself, which is ironic as you allow a Frenchman to take full control but not a Spanish duo if that’s how you think this club is run now. Don’t get me wrong I don’t think we are quite in the right direction just yet. But we were sinking fast under the Wenger regime in its final years, so at least things are changing. Arseblog were asking the same questions on our identity under emery. It seems to be the question on most people’s lips now.
What is exactly is this arsenal side? I don’t think emery even knows himself at this moment in time.
11 new players in the last 18 months would indicate that the squad has had a 50% overhaul on wenger’s favourites with rambo on the way out and ozil seemingly next

Goobergooner

Ozil can get bent.

Would definitely keep Ramsey, but not on what was after (not even sure how true his 200k+ per week demands were).

Why is Ozil captain for games if the manager dislikes him?

Has he really just been injured (too much fortnite and his body can’t handle the physicality anymore?) ?

And did he actually reject a move to psg?

Goobergooner

Emery has come into one of the shittest situations in world football. A club with a long and strong history in the top flight. One of the more global entities of the sport in terms of international fanbase. A former manager that is a club legend (despite his second decade; though he still did win fa cups). And a fucking entitled fanbase where trophies are expected (where we are hamstrung compared to the new top 4; not including spuds, where money is spent out their ass) and a positive/attacking gameplay is expected. Both Gazidis and Emery said they wanted to… Read more »

Tony

Un Sure I agree with what you’re saying, but injuries have also played a part in Emery failing to establish a real identity. Equally key positions are yet to be filled, such as a CAM and wingers although Suarez may well fit one such void. I’ve been saying I’ll wait until the summer TW is over and then see what Emery does. If there’s no evident identity materializing then serious questions have to be asked; ditto if Emery’s team selections are still all over the place and obviously wrong for certain games. What is also a series consternation for me… Read more »

Tony, The upstairs brigade also has to come forward with a blueprint of what planned direction the club is expected to go and honours they demand to be seriously challenged for. That’s just not going to happen as much as it should, it’s just not the way we do things. Ozil,Ramsey,Miki, – and a team of burgeoning talent albeit a lopsided squad
A team that has not been out of European football for a quarter of a century and 70 mill to spend.

Any coach worth his salt would have made a better fist of their first 7 months.

I’d love Ozil to come good, I imagine Emery would too as currently he’s a burden to the club on and off field.

Problem is, I don’t think he has the tools in the locker to do it, if he found 90mins in Spain tough how was he ever going to make it in the prem. I just don’t think he’s built for it phisically or mentally.

There is also another article today in DT about the trend towards loans as opposed to transfers in the January window as the preferred option for many clubs. It allows “buying” club the opportunity to look at a player and see whether he settles and is worth the investment and more importantly defer investment and regulate cash flow. Tip: Don’t take any of what Josh says seriously. It’s all designed to keep the restless natives quiet. His idea of ‘cross-pollination’ between Unai Emery and Sean McVay is for the birds.

I can imagine Emery thinking, ‘Stop reading comic books, Josh, and show us the money.’

Unai

ozil got the hump …. And at this point it’s his fault entirely.

He had a choice, knuckle down and earn his slot or fade into the background, he made the wrong call.

Emery has no reason whatsoever to indulge Ozil particularly with back drop of petulance and as you say, a less than favourable output.

Bob N16

Agree with you Unai, if we acquire well it doesn’t matter who is identifying the talent. You mention Torreira and Guendozi, do we know who was chiefly responsible for getting them in? Obviously it’s not a one man operation but every club is looking for these same players and if we out perform our competitors we’ll flourish, so it’s key.
All the some on here gnash their teeth saying we’re finished as a top club that’s clearly nonsense. We are attractive to players, for a variety of reasons. CL would help mind you!

Unai

Pierre, I won’t argue too much over Ozil, your views on him are well understood, what I will say, under his last 3 managers he has either fallen out of favour or been frozen out.

He’s also fallen out of favour with his national team.

You could criticize all those managers for failure to extract the best from him or you can look at the consistent in the whole equation, Ozil himself.

bennydevito

Unai,

Well said. The quicker we get shot of Ozil the better. It’s because of his obscene wages that we couldn’t afford more signings this winter because of our wage bill and FFP.

Why do you align yourself all the time with a collective “we” as if that somehow validates a point? Really odd trait you have going for you, and stands out like a sore thumb on here, can you not just have your own POV?

You’re like some weird dictator type speaking on behalf of folk, have to start calling you Maduro.

“under his last 3 managers he has either fallen out of favour or been frozen out.”

if your comment was remotely true it may have some substance …….Will leave it there I think .

CG City is very much fallible, they’ve lost at home to palace and just got turned over by mid table plodders Newcastle in their last match We know even with squad we have we’re capable of getting a result when we fancy it just the question of how fired up Emery has the boys how tactically astute is he on the day does he continue with his negative tactics and field 3 DMs or a bit proactive and let them go for it In any case any fan that try peddle this mock fear and make it seem we stand… Read more »

Your correct Pierre, what I meant to say was Ozil has failed under his last 3 managers not fallen out with, apologies.

I agree that Man City are fallible. Every team is….

I just do not understand then- why you posted this :

“”Anything but an embarrassing lose will be a positive I guess””

One minute you are making a case that Newcastle can beat them – and then you say it will be a positive thing if we do not get thrashed….
contradictory view points…

Emiratesstroller

Pierre The only way that Ozil can come good under Emery is if we play a diamond formation with 3 hard working midfielders playing behind him. The reality is that Ozil does not work defensively, which is clearly a problem for Emery. On the other hand it is abundantly clear that in Ozil absence we do struggle because of lack of creativity in team. Messrs Guendouzi, Ramsey and Iwobi are not remotely comparable in that department. What is abundantly clear is that Ozil is hard to shift so perhaps Emery will eventually compromise and adopt the diamond shape with 3… Read more »

Charlie GeorgeFebruary 2, 2019    11:03:21 Un “”If by being resourceful you mean not bowing to extortion by average players and not promoting people who have not met expectations then Raul has done just that””. Raul extended Elneny/Xhaka/Iwobi/Lichsteiner contracts. those average players- have all extorted more money from the ever resourceful Raul >>>>>>>> Oh dear CG, oh deary, deary me. You continue to make yourself look even more foolish with each comment you make than before, an amazing achievement considering your already stratospheric stupidity. How have Iwobi, Xhaka, Elneny and Lichsteiner “extorted” more money? First of all Lichsteiner hasn’t been here… Read more »

Ozil’s problem is clearly a lack of commitment. No one doubts his ability.
He is potentially a passenger in every game he starts and playing him against City is a huge risk witht he game being played around him.
Personally I favour ES’s diamond formation of 1-4-3-1-2.
My preference is to drop Xkaha who is too slow and potentially another passenger against high-press, quick passing sides like City. I suggest Guen, Torriera and Ramsey behind Iwobi or Suarez with Auba and Lacazette up top.

CC

Your such a pernickety little shite.

Then again, I knew that long ago.

Unai said it all.

One other thing, if, in future, you’re going to use derogatory words( “spastic”) to describe other posters, can I suggest you pick them wisely.

Graham62

You’re

Goobergooner

Charlie George, The hyperbole is maybe too much in what I said that it’s the shittest in world football. But I definitely mean that in terms of the elite clubs. He has fans on his arse about winning a trophy that hasn’t been won for 15 seasons like it’s ours to be won. We are comparing ourselves to Chelsea man U and city when in reality we have been well off them In terms of squad and management for the decade and a half we haven’t truely competed. And I agree to an extent that it’s still there for the… Read more »

I used the word extort- because Un Introduced it – in his previous post

Sorry Graham

You were referring to CC not CG- ‘re spastic slur!

I said “we” Charlie because a number of us here said that Wilshere was crocked. Yes, I was one of the more vocal posters on this point, but I didn’t want to make it sound as if I were the only one here who had said this. You took this meaningless little remark as an opportunity to be a prick, which is very you.

Micheal “Ozil’s problem is clearly a lack of commitment. No one doubts his ability. He is potentially a passenger in every game he starts and playing him against City is a huge risk witht he game being played around him.” I have always said that there are certain games that Ozil is a liability , when we play Liverpool,Tottenham and city away we are normally srarved of possession which renders ozil ineffective…..wenger used to play him , a mistake in my opinion. Ozil has commitment( don’t laugh) but his commitment is to finding space, getting on the ball, bringing his… Read more »

And by the way, Maduro is the democratically-elected president of Venezuela. He is not a dictator. That is pure US propaganda, which apparently you’ve naively swallowed. The US is looking to carry out a right-wing coup in Venezuela. This is so obvious it should not even need to be pointed out.
