Arsenal transfer news is light on juice.
There’s a great big monstrous elephant in the room that we can’t talk about, but at a base level, what you can say is our best player, for whatever reason, is not with the squad on tour in Germany. Our season collapsed on his long-term absence last year and it’s arguably why we finished 8th in Arteta’s first full season.
As it stands, Mo Elneny is single pivoting for us, as Matt said on the podcast, that’s the difference from looking distinctly West Ham, to looking like we can compete with Manchester City at home.
There does appear to be movement on Youri Tielemans. If I were to guess why things have been slow, it’s fewfold:
- The player would be due back on July 14th with the rest of the international players. Clubs tend not to want to take on wages until players are working.
- Tielemans only wants Arsenal, so there’s not much chance of being gazumped by Todd Boehly, Newcastle, or Manchester United.
- Arsenal don’t want to pay Leicester a massive fee.
Frenkie De Jong is rumoured to be costing about £65m with bonuses going up to £80m. The wild part of the story is the deal is being held up because Barca owe him £17m in deferred payments. Quite something for a player that tanked.

Folarin Balogun, I love him, but he needs to get some development minutes. Who else leaves? Charlie Patino has been on a pure meat diet, but he’s still very green, and he looked off the pace when he debuted. Can he make a Saka-like jump this season or does he need the Saliba treatment?
Europa League IS a great place to learn about young players, so hopefully, we get a bit of excitement there, but at the same time, I hope the best young players don’t lose out because they stayed for the 6 European games, versus opting for the 4500 minutes they might get elsewhere.

Pierre I truly believe Eddie will force himself into getting more game time, especially if we fix the midfield making the whole attack better. Then, maybe Jesus can quietly move somewhat for the good of the team. I wouldn’t jump right into Nketiah moving Jesus wide, and definitely not Saka to the left. Creates more problems. There is a very good reason why we can’t sell well. We have been seen as a club that breeds poor players or buys poor players and doesn’t improve them or buts good players and ruins them. Our players fetch little because the evidence has been that over the last 3-4 years of wenger and the 2 or Emery we did not add value. And other teams bought player with little value Bellerin. The players who get over 200k are basically all superstar names bought by massive, extremely wealthy clubs. If you want to pay players that kind of salary you need to understand that only comparable clubs are candidates to sell said player to a few years down the line if it goes badly for any reason. We quickly forget the overall picture of our season especially when people have favourites. When Martinez came in for the injured Leno in Arteta’s first period, he was good. We had a terrible defence, and also Arteta’s tactics was to soak pressure and counter. It was good and we won the FA cup. I have always liked Ainsley. More capable than Cedric as a fullback and can play both on the right side and the left. He can play as a sub in central midfield too. Besides he is on nominal wages.

That was before the current regime of Lewis, Garlick and Edu took over negotiations. In the case of foreign players Arsenal have as I posted this morning a different problem. Pepe is on £140k pw I believe, and the answer to ES’s question is obviously no-one. The player and his agent will have seen the likes of Ozil & Co walk away with big pay offs and feel no need to move anywhere on lower wages.
Do I recall Xhaka getting a pay rise with his new contract last summer? In which case there was probably zero chance of him leaving either even before events of earlier this month.

Sportsrac suggest he is on £140k a week , and I know people don’t like talking about it but if that £140 k a week is correct employers NIC will cost around another £10k a week. Martinez looks pretty good but I’m not sure he’s 50m good like Utd might be paying As a rule of thumb if man utd are throwing the kitchen sink at signing a player you’re probably dodging a bullet by stepping aside. I can confirm that Saka has the same agent as Nketiah and Balogun. Other famous clients are Sancho, Cantwell, Iwobi, Akpom. They got their star client Sancho a stunning salary of £350k (supposedly) so they will be looking for at the absolute minimum £250k for Saka I feel like. What happens when we want to extend that contract? Go to £400k? Fk me it’s insane money but if we want him we’ll have to pay up.

Un I agree about Martinez. Hybrid players like him are important in the modern game. As I said before he reminds me of Cancelo. City played £60m for him, he’s been worth twice that to them for how he impacts their game. Martinez isn’t like Cancelo. What are people watching. Cancelo is a modern day attacking fullback. He can play both sides and as an attacking wingback. Martinez is a CB or a CDM. He is slower but he is a passer. For €50 mil, I am glad we missed out on him. United are planning to pair him with Varane. They are paying that money so that he can be their starting CB. A sad ending for Jack Wilshere’s Career. But he will have a career as a coach, it seems. Playing too many games early destroyed him. And his style of play, although great to watch was one of the reasons he had so many injuries. He would never shy away from a tackle, and he would dribble through a crowd even though he would have been better off passing it. We need to protect Saka for him not to go the same way.
