No longer a banter club

by .

Well there is it my dears, part one of the transfer window is OVER (domestic).

We have landed in a great spot.

  • Saliba – For next year
  • Ceballos
  • Martinelli (This year, it would seem)
  • David Luiz
  • Nicolas Pepe
  • Kieran Tierney

What a haul!

You can whinge about some of the players if you are a real brat, not me, I am over the moon about the whole collective and I am a super brat.

I think there’s a lot of bitching about David Luiz, but for me, the only real concern is that he’s 32 years old. I’ve not seen a downturn in his ability to dominate players, but he might be more prone to injuries. He can be erratic, I’m just not sure we’re in a position to sniff at a name that has always won things with big clubs. Concern that placed in a madhouse, he’ll crumble is valid, but that’s an Emery issue. He should be a great stopgap and we’ll hopefully find a more longterm solution next summer.

What all these players offer Emery is choice, and with that, no excuse for not making the top 4 this season. The Spaniard is a very lucky man in general, it’s hard to look at Manchester United and think they’ve moved things forward. Chelsea rocked a transfer ban and I’m not sure Frank Lampard is the full ticket. A great player, but is he an inspirational leader of men OFF the pitch? We’ll see. But they have had an awful summer and losing your best player is never an easy pill to swallow.

We’re also finishing the summer with a net spend of around… £45m.

Emery said in his press conference that he’s still looking to move on some players, you’d have to imagine the writing is on the wall for Mustafi and Elneny. The absolute madness of it all is those two could move us close to a break-even point for the window.

That is wild when you consider all the lies and nonsense we’ve been fed over the years.

Ivan Gazidis and Arsene Wenger were the most inept duo in world football. Raul and Edu are making them look like the Chuckle Brothers.

They couldn’t sell players. They couldn’t negotiate. They never had a plan b. They couldn’t run an effective operation.

We sold Koscielny for more than Ramsey, Welbeck, Jack Wilshere and Chezzer COMBINED.

We sold Alex Iwobi, a player that’s really struggled to make a dent in our pretty average first-team, for £40m. He’s our RECORD sale. We sold an ok player and made him our record sale.

We’re finally negotiating with clubs. We’ve spent very little this summer and managed to bring the best young player outside PSG to The Arsenal along with a host of really smart buys that are very unArsenal.

We finally stopped behaving like victims.

‘Buying players is harder than buying a loaf of bread’

‘The market is inflated’

‘FFP will rectify things’

‘Stan doesn’t give us enough money’

‘We simply can’t compete’

I’m so glad we’re done with all that nonsense. Raul has done more in two weeks than Ivan could muster in 10 years. He’s a beast of a hustler. He’s playing with the big boys. He’s working with the mega agents. Now we’re moving players more easily and we’re bringing in a higher calibre of talent.

We’re getting shit done and moving ahead with a clear vision.

I am absolutely shocked at the pace we’re doing this.

I’m more convinced than ever that if the manager doesn’t work, decisive action will be taken. I don’t even think top 4 is enough… underlying stats and the style of football will have to improve as well.

This season will still be bumpy, but fuck man, it feels good to have some joy back in our football lives.

This is what the game is about. Great players, big excitement and a future that doesn’t involve everyone laughing at us every summer.

What a time to be a Gooner!

See you in the comments. x

Yes, yes and yes. Tell that to Marko.

Always looking for a bit of a way into a diatribe about something.

  2. Marko

I’m not getting into a thing here I was genuinely asking what written white meant. First off they’re not going off any source material anymore so whether or not Fleming had him blonde and white (plenty of non blonde Bonds btw) is irrelevant. But I’m generally asking what does written white mean in the context of Idris Elba couldn’t be Bond.

FYI thought Skyfall and Casino Royale were great but there’s been enough shit Bonds over the years to suggest that they stop making Bond movies

  3. Up 4 grabs now

    Guns I’m all for equality,
But it’s so politically correct these days.

Would like to see Idris as a spy in a film.
He doesn’t have to be the James bond character.

People make the argument that you can’t have another spy series as well as bond. But that never stopped the Bourne series.

    Same with doctor who.
Why not invent a new science fiction show with a strong female lead, rather than change a current one to please a few people and alienate a lot.

  4. Guns of Hackney

Idris could be Bond because as you say, the source material is done. However, the character is a white male. His adventures are different but the ‘person’ is white.

Idris is great. Good looking, tall, butch and could easily pull off a good role but…HE would then be the ‘black bond’ and that fails him as an actor and the character.

How many times do you or I or anyone roll their eyes when someone is called ‘the new Henry, the new Ronaldo, the new Messi. It’s so painful.

Bond should stay male and white just as Othello should be male and black. Why not cast Ghandi as a mixed race, lesbian jew in a wheelchair???

  5. Up 4 grabs now

Marko, the bond films are hit and miss, since Daniel Craig took over.

Skyfall was excellent, quantum of solace a dog’s dinner.

This is his last film then I think they need to take a break and reboot in 3-4 years.

  6. WengerEagle

Haha fucking hell Norwich getting their arses caved in here. Pool really are scary good at Anfield.

Anyone know if the game at Newcastle is on BT? Don’t get Sky so stream job or pub if that’s the case.

  7. fsaf

Casino Royale especially was top notch. Skyfall also. As a whole Daniel Craig and the direction Bond took to be much more ruthless, crude and willing to go down and dirty, was such a positive change in the franchise. I love Pierce Brosnan but his Bond movies were gash. Daniel Craig’s versions made sure lower class action movies compared to the Bond series like Mission Impossible stayed what they are – below. Jason Bourne did give Bond a run for the money though. Excellent series as well.

  8. Marc

I like Idris Elba, he’s a good actor but he was in the Dark Tower film a couple of years ago. He’s ok in it but it’s a poor relation to the books where once again the main character is white, there are several references to him being white and in one of the books another character who’s black repeatedly calls him a honky mother fucker.

I’m a huge fan of the books and the film in comparison is just poor.

Why we have this constant need to re write white male characters as either female or black is beyond me.

Can you imagine the outcry if they made a film about Florence Nightingale but made the character a bloke?

  9. Mark

I was at the the AISA when the barracking crowd started on Raul . He wasn’t having none of it. At the end he got a round of applause . Cojones ! He’s got em!
Also he said he’d had 14 years of transfer windows and this one was acknowledged across clubs as being tough ( see UTD failing to replace a forward , Neymar , Pogba etc )
The recovery of Arsenal will be fragmented with some areas pushing forward ahead of others. The Exec team is far more confidence inspiring then Ivan and Wengo. Unai I’m not so sure but let’s see.
Finally from 2020 the Ozil , Mitty salary moaning will be on its way out.
We are starting to act as a proper club. The coach is also now interchangeable within the structure without the risk of systemic failure.
    Progress at last!

  10. Marko

It has nothing to do with being politically correct just stick to the specific question what is written white with regards to James Bond. If you’re literally going off Fleming wrote that he was a white boy that time again the films are their own thing have been for years. Way I see it the character of bond is he drinks alot he’s a bit of a bastard towards women and subservient to the empire. If you’re telling me a that a black guy couldn’t do those things you’re wrong. Should just stop making them honestly. The Bourne and John Wick movies are better and they’re not stupid enough to keep making them every 5 years

  11. Guns of Hackney

I’ve read the old ones and I have Trigger Mortis and Solo and I think one more but I forgot the name. Howowitz is writing them. Carte Blanche! That’s it.

They are okay, a bit current as Bond in one is a non smoker.

Bond is a character though so he moves through time.

  12. Marc

Marko’s just made a telling comment – the Bond books aren’t action stories they’re thrillers. There are small periods of action in them / violent scenes but the films are an absolute abomination of the stories.

It’s a shame we don’t get more proper spy thrillers made Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy from a couple of years ago was superb.

  13. Left testicle

The world is going mad. The same Social Justice Warriors who think Bond should be black / female are probably the same jerks who believe we shouldn’t assign our children a gender.

  14. Marko

Worth noting I don’t think Idris Elba is on for the role or has ever even been interested in it. I think that recent Hobbs and Knobbs film is enough of an action fix for him

  15. Guns of Hackney

TTSS is hands down utterly brilliant. A fantastic movie. The script, actors, photography, attention to detail is untouched. Genuinely brilliant. Brilliant I tells ya!

  16. WengerEagle

Cheers fellers and no Mid just get BT on my shitty package, used to be great in the glory days I’d get Serie A, Bundesliga, Ligue 1, UFC and NBA all on BT as well as PL.

They scrapped the NBA, now UFC events are PPV on BT which is a joke because we get the events over here at stupid o’clock in the early hours and they show hardly any Serie A matches anymore too. Sky have bumped up their PL count too whereas BT used to have more games.

  17. Up 4 grabs now

There’s plenty of polictal correctness around.
Like I said I’m all for equality as far as I’m concerned we’re all human and equals.
Sexuality and colour don’t come into it.

The problem is there are too many people who are easily offended, and a lot of the time there offended on other people’s behalf who aren’t even complaining.

Love the Jon wick films but wait for someone to come out and complain that Keanu should be replaced with a non white non male at some point in the future.

What am saying left is that they should stop quoting the wrong figures just to make a point

Says the guy claiming Arsenal spent 150m this TW.

  19. Marko

Anyone see that bodyguard? Not usually a BBC drama kind of guy but I rinsed through it on Netflix and I thought it was cool as fuck. Robb Stark far more likely to be the next Bond

  20. Guns of Hackney

    “Alan in wonderland” ha ha

Or as Ned Flanders says “the bible says Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve”!

  21. Champagne charlie

Disagree about it being PC, it’s almost always the motive.

There’s modern pushback against long standing fictional works that are depicted on the big screen. Same bollocks hits the comic book sphere. Bond is a white Male, to depict Bond the first part is to get that bit right.

Superman isn’t black either. If you want equality and promotion of black figures, female figures et al, then create the characters. Don’t appropriate previous characters/stories because social values have changed in modern culture, it’s fucking daft. In 40 years Harry Potter will be redone as an Asian.

  22. Guns of Hackney

It was a good series. Ludicrous but fun.

As for the next Bond. Michael Fassbender. He should be the guy. No idea why he isn’t mentioned???

  23. Marc

Agree great film – I happened to be in a book shop and saw Legacy of Spies, Le Carre’s new book at the time bought and really enjoyed it. I’ve now done The Spy who came in from the cold, Tinker Taylor and I’m currently on The Honourable Schoolboy.

    All worth a read.

  24. MidwestGun

Same thing is happening here… all these networks want you to buy their streaming packages.. So they show you limited number of matches.. I still can get Serie A, and occasional Bundesliga but don’t even get all of our matches anymore and no FA cup matches most of the time. So have had to watch more and more matches on dodgy streams from Japan or somewhere.

  25. Up 4 grabs now

    Cc it’s true.

Why not make new movies or TV series with strong woman leads or non white males as the lead.

That’s equality, not rewriting the past.

  26. Marko

Love the Jon wick films but wait for someone to come out and complain that Keanu should be replaced with a non white non male at some point in the future.

You’re kinda convoluting the conversation. Would it bother you if the next John Wick movie focused on Lance Reddik’s character or if in a few years it was remade with Michael B Jordan? Keep in mind that the whole super assassin exacting revenge on the people who killed his puppy left to him by his dead wife isn’t something that can only specifically happen to a white man

  27. Guns of Hackney

I have never read the books but saw a bit of Obe Wan Kenobi as Smiley.

Damn that movie is great! The ending where ‘la mer’ is playing over the end scenes. Even Cumberbatch acts well and doesn’t come across as a cunt.

  28. Up 4 grabs now

    Left testicle,

How about the duchesses of hazard.
Two ladies who drive the general Lee. With there male companion who wears tight hot pants.

    That sounds a ratings winner!

  29. Marc

Someone earlier mentioned Prime Suspect. The first series was fantastic Helen Mirren was outstanding – no bollocks about being a strong person because she’s a woman she was a strong personality.

Whenever I hear this type of bollocks I wish I was present to point out to the moaners that some years ago two young male struggling actors who didn’t’ feel there were enough good roles out there. They wrote a screen play and got the film made and stared in as complete unknowns – that was Good Will Hunting.

If all these women are so fucking good and so fucking clever off you go – go make a film.

  30. Un na naai

They need to do away with bond altogether and stop re hashing the same old Tired stories and characters and material

Hollywood is a creative vacuum now. All the good writers have gone to tv because Hollywood doesn’t take creative risks any more or very very rarely and when it does the audience is so fucking dumbed down they frequently don’t understand what they are watching or find well paced, intelligent films boring.

It’s all biographical arse licking films, super hero shit, romance and unfunny comedies or jump scare horrors with the same old tropes.
Saying that there have been some quite good horrors out over the last few years

Back on point though making bond black won’t make the films any better

They are done. Same as Star Wars. Jurassic park.Alien.Predator.Terminator. Just cheap cash grabs with no respect to the original material or themes.
Hollywood needs to get its finger back on the pulse and start employing creatively diverse writers rather than the mugs who sing from the same hymn sheet constantly.

Did you know the guy who wrote the screen play for Chernobyl is also the guy who wrote the scary movie films and hangover 2? Then he produces an absolute master piece.

Hidden gems all over the place and they are being type cast or held back for yes men like rian Johnson

Them brits dominated the world!!!!!!!!!! They were no match for the boys from Cork though 🙂

Roy Keane got sent home by an English man!!!

    Has everything.

  32. Marko

In 40 years Harry Potter will be redone as an Asian.

I dunno about that again they’d be going off a specific source material it’ll be a literal adaptation whereas the Bond movies are there own thing entirely. I think Casino Royale was the first proper adaptation in years if I’m not mistaken. Anyway it’s pointless the whole argument because one I don’t think there’s any true interest in the part for any black actors and I don’t think it’s been considered dispite the faux outrage.

  33. Marko

    Whilst we’re on a cultural curve – what’s everyone’s opinion on Blade Runner 2049?

Loved the bollox out of it. Denis Villanueva is arguably the best director around these days

  34. Up 4 grabs now

Marko your kinda missing the point.
John wick is a white character.
If they make John wick four but recast keanu for Michael b Jordan then it’s not the same character.

I would have no problem if they concentrate on another actor. I actually thought they might have done that with the Halle berry character who I thought was underused.

Of course what happens to the character doesn’t just happen to white people that’s a stupid argument for the sake of it.

  35. Un na naai

Loved it. Great film. Fantastic soundtrack
Scarce action but brutal when called upon.
Made with love and paid homage to the original while being able to deliver something new and different.
    Spotlight very good

  36. Un na naai

Really?? I loved it. Thought 2049 was that rare modern sci-fi that opted out of silly laser fights on space ships and went for character plot and tension.

  37. Marc

Casino Royale was closer to the book than most Bond films but was still wide of the mark.

Blade Runner 2049 – Love the original and love the updates even more but just don’t like 2049 – it’s visually brilliant but the story – meh.

I’m convinced all the good reviews are because they cocked up on the first one and are trying to make amends / don’t want to repeat history. I reckon in 20 years it’ll be seen as a poor sequel.

  38. Marko

They are done. Same as Star Wars. Jurassic park.Alien.Predator.Terminator

Hate Don absolute dumbass when it comes to football and the world but he’s right on movies.

The likes of Disney just keep churning out remakes and shite with the intention of getting your movie and it’s all bad to average shite. Heard the other day they’re remaking Home Alone and Night at the Museum for “a new generation”. Pathetic shite that Home Alone is on every Christmas it’s generation-less and the other one is only a few years old

John wick is a white character.
If they make John wick four but recast keanu for Michael b Jordan then it’s not the same character.

It’s not really the same thing though is it. Bond now isn’t the same as Bond in the 80’s or the 90’s or whatever it’s gets a reboot not so much as a recast. Anyway we’re getting off point I’m ambivalent to the prospect of a black Bond because I’d prefer they stop making them all together

  44. Marc

The therory is that macready gave childs petrol to drink and because the thing didn’t know what alcohol was, it didn’t spit it out. Childs would have and macready then knew he was alone with the thing. That’s why he smiled when childs drank from the molitov cocktail.

Won’t spoil any of it for you but give it a go.

    I’ll have to.

Trailer for that Irishman looks promising. Joe Pesci can’t wait

I think sometimes you get people over thinking films and of course the cast / director is mysterious because it generates more coverage.

I’ll be honest I’d never even thought about that until I saw it online and I’d seen the film probably half a dozen times by then.

Why did you think it was awful? The scene where he gets back and his kids are 20-30 years older and sending video messages of their kids
    Literally had me in tears
It’s marmite though that fun but it did it for me.
Love Matthew mc- ah fuck I’m not even going to bother trying to spell it.

First scene of inglorious bastards- one of the greatest of all time

True romance, the Sicilian blood scene with Dennis hopper and Christopher walken was brilliant.

    Seven psychopaths great film too.

Of course. I’ve seen it 20 times and never have it a thought. But the internet is full of weirdos…most on here.

Scorsese is amazing, still has it in his 70’s when most of the best have long gone downhill.

Wolf of Wallstreet was absolutely wild, most enjoyable film I’d watched in a long time when it came out.

Is there another director in the game that has had an all-time classic film in every decade from the 70’s until now?

    Taxi Driver [1976]
    Raging Bull [1980]
    GoodFellas [1990]
    The Departed [2006]
The Wolf of Wall Street [2013]
