Arsenal vs Chelsea: A needed springboard opportunity for both managers

by .

Processed with VSCO with c1 preset

Unai Emery is now well and truly out of the Christmas crush. Arsenal have problems, they’ve been well documented this week, the only way out is world class thinking and a new approach to issues that have haunted us all season.

We go up against Chelsea, a team also in transition, a team that boasts a batch of issues not to disimilar to some of ours in the past.

They are creating chances, but they can’t finish. Midfield isn’t offering many goals and worryingly for them, it’s not offering up much in the way of fight. Jorginho is a passing machine, but his style isn’t producing enough on the pitch. Morata has been a total flop, Giroud is working hard to make shooting seem like a mainstream idea he’d like to eradicate. You’d imagine if we combined the two squads, there’d be something special there.

They need an away win, but it’s far from a cut and shut case like it has felt in the past (even though we had a good record against Conte).

The question for Emery is how does he want to play? Chelsea are good in posession and if we go toe-to-toe we could find ourselves on the back of a spanking. Chelsea have struggled against teams that pack the midfield and defence. They don’t have a striker, so finding openings is tough for them.

Our issues are the opposite of Sarri’s. We’re creating fuck all, but we have two electric strikers who can finish from anywhere. We lack width, Chelsea have great wide players.

My worry tomorrow is Hazard is always a disaster for us. One of the best in the business against an appalling defensive unit. The other player we might have to watch out for his Hudson-Odoi, who had a good preseason against us. The wantaway English wideman has a point to prove, he’s fast, direct and he will be licking his lips at the though of terrorising us today.

We have some secret weapons that could spice things up. We can call upon Mesut Ozil, who is always good after an extended holiday (Leicester springs to mind) and he had a fucking blinder against Chelsea in the league cup last season. We can also use Aaron Ramsey if we fancy. The great thing about these two players is they are both incredibly fresh. Which other teams in the top 4 have two of their best players August ready? None. We need to make something work.

The defence needs to be tight tomorrow, we need to play with discipline and the manager needs to pick a team that can stand the test of 60 minutes without a change.

I’d really like to see a plan tomorrow. This cannot be a rerun of the Liverpool game. The players didn’t believe they’d come out of that game alive, it’ll be very interesting to see how they’re feeling about tomorrow. This game will be a good indication of how the rest of this season plays out.

If we lose, we’re doomed to 6th. I’d suggest that Emery takes a new approach. Test out the kids, see how good they are, allow us to make better bets in the summer.

Right, that’s me done. See you in the comments you bastards x

Xhaka is a waste. Ramsey is off in few months. Why isn’t Emery trying AMN at CM then?

Guns of SF

Alonso was a real nasty fucker today.
I wish one of our lads left a little something more in a tackle on him.
Cant stand the player..

Now if AMN had some balls- he should have at least squared up to his ugly mug
That blank look might be kinda scary in those situations.

Would be crazy selling Lacazette and weaken our only strong position in the team. We should have at least 100m to spend in the summer even without CL that’s enough to buy Suarez if he works out after the loan, Fekir and Barella. That completes our attack (could maybe use another winger but Rome wasn’t built in 1 day) and midfield. We then need to sell Mustafi and Chambers, Xhaka, Elneny, Ozil and Mikhi. If we can’t get enough money for all of those to buy a CB and RB the whole club should get fired. No need to sell… Read more »

Arsenal do have a serious problem in view of what appears to be a serious long term injury to Bellerin. Both Lichsteiner and Jenkinson are not remotely EPL standard players. A.M.N is a better calibre player, but he lacks the physicality in defence and is probably better in central midfield albeit ranks behind Torreira, Xhaka and Guendouzi in those positions. I have maintained for a long time that Arsenal needs to recruit a top class defensive full-back. Arsenal’s achilles heel is that having two wing backs playing together risks both players being out of position and leaving centre backs exposed.… Read more »

Freddie Ljungberg I agree with the first part of post. Both Manchester City and Liverpool play with three attacking players in their team. If the rest of the team was solid you can play with that formation. Unfortunately Arsenal’s defence remains as ever brittle. You see that particularly at set pieces and corners. Towards end of game the defence was panicking and just kicking or heading ball in the air. Yes there are a lot of players who need to be offloaded, but the constant debate about Ozil is not productive. The only way that Ozil is going to leave… Read more »

Emirates stroller Agree. So why are they not addressing these issues.? A)Ignorant to this fact? B)incompetent? C) stubborn? Everybody knows in modern prem football – you need athleticm and power there. See man city, Liverpool, spurs array of full backs. They have Rushed backed Hector tonight. Because we have no one else in his position – now The Lad now in big trouble. Did the same with Holding (3 games in 6 days- inc a trip to Russia) They are failing to look after our players.. Arsenals tiers of management have to up their game. Deal with the problems that… Read more »

Emery has inherited an unbalanced squad with some serious weaknesses.

It will take time to resolve. It is not going to happen overnight and will not at all if the club are not prepared to invest. You cannot rely just on promoting from Academy and bringing in low budget players.

Freddie Ljungberg

ES

As long as Ozil is at the club we’re hamstrung by his wages, we could have 2-3 top players that actually contribute for what he’s on, so something needs to be done. It’s clear the manager doesn’t trust him either, and with good cause.

Either way we can do all of the above regardless of Ozil, but I doubt he wants to spend his last years of football not even making the matchday squad, not great for his image.

Freddie Ljungberg

the defence is brittle partly because our defenders are not good enough, even though Kos was great today, it’s no longer the norm for him. It also got worse when Bellerin was injured because AMN is not a right back. We extended Monreals contract 1 year so I’m guessing we’re not going to address LB this summer, which is fine, the whole team can’t be overhauled in 1 year. So CB and RB needed. The other part affecting the defense is that our midfield and attack is not good enough, Xhaka was absolutely horrendous the first 15 minutes yesterday, gave… Read more »

My guess is that Arsenal will have 3-4 wingers in the squad next season.

Iwobi is already in squad and unlikely to leave. Nelson will be almost certainly promoted to squad as well and possibly Saka will come into frame for cup games.

Also I do think that the club will buy an additional player as well who will be
added to starting X1.

Charlie George

Es They have bought 6 players. Only one was a right back. Lichsteiner at 34. It’s mid Jan. They have still not addressed this. It’s nothing to with time and budget concerns.( Wenger or kroenke or Gazidas) They need a right back. They should go and get one. Otherwise-lets get tiers of management that are capable of addressing our short, medium and long terms needs. They are proving to me , post Wenger( see above with injuries ) they are actually doing very little different to than what happened before. Unlike the Wenger era. We ain’t got time to waste.… Read more »

Didn’t Lacazette play 90 minutes last week at West Ham? And ended up doing nothing bar the first ten minutes.

The Fan’s aren’t helping when they boo his substitution, is the manager supposed to take a vote before making a sub?

Alone + Easy Target

But we don’t have the dosh innit CG my lad?

And we only have one person to blame for that. The discussion about selling Lacazette and whatnot. Reducing the immense wage Özil is on, the departure of Mislintat etc.

Moving forward, I’d like to see the diamond system in the next couple of matches. It works, as long as the hunger to press and close down the opposition is there. Aubameyang and Lacazette clearly are in sync, and I think against United, will be a great match to bring in Ozil in the 10 role. Guendouzi and Torreria were very disaplined against Chelsea, so as long as they work for the team, it works. Xhaka still worries me, and needs to keep switched on for 90 mins. And maybe with Koscielny and Sokratis together as a pair, it could… Read more »

The only reason you argue agaisnt is beacuse you’re suffering from some wenger delusion syndrome where anything and everything directly or even indirectly starched to him is to be harshly criticized. Before yesterday this squad was utter dog shit. But we have shown that we can beat Chelsea spurs and should have beat liveoool this season so how bad can it be? What I like about Maitland niles is that no matter what he is calm under pressure. For a top level footballer to look relaxed on the pitch is a great trate to have, as well as having good composure and rarely looks flustered, and I hope he never looses that.

It’s his concentration that worries me, its vital that Sokratis is in his ear non stop

Emirates ‘Iwobi is already in squad and unlikely to leave. Nelson will be almost certainly promoted to squad as well and possibly Saka will come into frame for cup games’ If all these happens and we are suddenly swarming with wingers, how does this affect Lacazette’s playing time? When Arsenal play like yesterday one can under the reasoning for leaving ozil out of the side as we were aggressive in our play throughout the game . Emery did get his tactics right, he basically copied pochettino and tottenham’s tactics from the league game a while back when Tottenham completely dominated the game by putting Deli Alli on jourginho and closing down the spaces high up the pitch with aggressive closing down and so inflicted chelsea’s first league defeat. Was that the same Invincibles who Chelsea knocked out of the Champions league in 2004.

Lacazette is Arsenal’s best player.

His attitude is also superb.

If I was still able to wear an Arsenal shirt, I would proudly put his name on the back.

Redtruth

As i recall Spurs dominated Man Utd yet Utd held firm due to Spurs profligacy, Arsenal will not make the same mistake.

Graham62

Lacazette is a major “asset”, of that there is no doubt.

For me, he is far more valuable to the club than Aubameyang, although Aubameyangs work ethic yesterday was excellent.

What is clear though, is that both these players are key to Arsenal moving forward.

I hope Emery also sees it that way.

Lacazette literally was our match winner yesterday. A game of enormous importance to our pursuit of champions league football. How after that can you advocate selling him? He’s our best player. Our only real match winner in big games.

And don’t forget. We are going to get £60m each from Emirates and Adidas per season in sponsorship but even if that were not the case, why not sell aubameyang?

Un na naai

Without de gea United aren’t all that. He’s their match winner. The only reason we didn’t beat them this season and seasons past was down to him. Put a lesser man between the sticks and we clock up more victories agaisnt them. They’ve done extremely well to hold onto him for so long while they languished mid table. We’d be up there with spurs if we had de gea. Leno isn’t a patch on the goalkeepers of our rivals

Graham The whole talk about sacrificing Laca isn’t to suggest he’s any worse than Auba. No we don’t have £10 million to,spend in the summer. In fact we only spent £70 million last summer because of he player sales in January.

Chambers is on loan and isn’t contributing, why do we need to replace him? Mustafi and Chambers out = 1 CB in. Xhaka is one of the weakest links in our starting line up, he’s constantly costing us points, I’m not advocating selling without replacing which is why I mentioned Barella as an example of someone to bring in. I wouldn’t mind playing ozil or iwobi if we have 3 midfielders behind them
Worrying that Bellerin looks to be our for a while

Bob N16

Unai,
In my opinion, yesterday was the way forward, at least until the rest of the season. Four at the back, a line of three across the midfield and the three front players: Lac, PEA and one other who are obviously focussed on attack. When a FB pushes forward one of the CMs covers. Although Guendouzi had a good game, he has to be disciplined and not get dragged across as then PEA has to come deep to support Kola which is not ideal.

Bellerin injury a real shame. Hope AMN can take his chance.

Batistuta

Yea don’t get the whole having to sell one of your best players to fund a winger when it’s not like we’re Blackpool or Leyton Orient. Having 2 world class strikers is our only strength in the squad, why weaken that especially with ticket prices the highest in Europe, top 10 most valuable club in the world and lots of dross to clear out before touching any of our strikers. We’re not a poor club and shouldn’t be selling to buy

Batistuta

Also, that lineup bar Bellerin now has to be Emery’s Conte moment. That has to be the way to go because you could obviously see a pattern. I’d probably start getting on his back if he tinkers with that lineup going forward

Bob N16

Agreed Batistuta,

We can sell a load of other players who need offloading/ upgrading before we sell one of our best players. Realistically speaking, we’ll probably only get rid of 6/7 players even though most of us would prefer more. If we padout the squad with youth players, we should focus on acquiring 3-4 starters.

I have my doubts about Nelson as well, he probably won’t be ready to start for us next season, but needs must and we can’t (unfortunately) revamp the whole squad at once. Not sure we need a winger that takes it out wide, neither Lozano or Sarr/Pepe is that type, they’re more goalscoring, dribbling wingers, just like Fekir can be and has been at times for Lyon. Pierre, You assessment of yesterday’s victory is absolutely absurd, your poor attempt to hide your discontent for Emery through backhanded compliments is clear for all to see. Anybody who didn’t watch yesterday’s game and only read your review would have thought we were peak Sam Alardyce Bolton and Tony Pulis Stoke rolled into one with peak vinnie Jones crazy gang thrown in for good measure when it was anything but. The ref wasn’t being lenient at all and didn’t give out yellow cards because none of them warranted it, simple. As for copying Poch – fucking lol! We’re you at… Read more »

@ RjM “.I’d try and turn Mustafi in a right back”

It is an idea if Mustafi is a normal defender. We have seen so often that Mustafi can go nuts with his sliding and other stupid reactions. He has his good days. But his bad days can really hurt the team.

Correction Manchester Utd not City

An impressive victory.

Everybody is trying to come up with an explanation, usually concluding that Emery used the ‘right’ tactics (and often going on to say, ‘I told you so’.)

What did Sarri say about the game? ‘It’s nothing to do with tactics’. A little hyperbolic but essentially true. He put the defeat down to ‘mentality’ and ‘lack of determination’.

Tactics primarily is a method the manager uses for controlling his players. Yesterday Emery got the best out of his players, Sarri didn’t.

You know what? That was the first time I’ve really been impressed by him since he left Dortmund. He was good. Maybe Koscielny is the right partner for him. Long term though I still want holding. He has a bit of Martin Keown about him.

England is best I disgaree He out Ramsey at the tip of a diamond to nullify Jorginho which worked beautifully when we didn’t have the ball He put Torreira on the right of our midfield to deal with Alonso and his marauding runs from full back while using Bellerin as an outlet to overlap him. Essentially making Torreira a false no2 Another superb decision. He played lacazette right and aubameyang left to split their defence when we broke with Ramsey breaking through the middle which confused them in the first half and they jut couldn’t get to grips with it.… Read more »

Alone Arsenal do have the cash. It’s only because Raul and Vinai have boxed themselves in with the self sustainable model nonsense they continue to spouse. As for this Kroenke investing his own money on players nonsense. Can anyone name a previous Arsenal director who has put their own money into buying players? Or barring a few other clubs.( Man City and Chelsea) Other clubs directors who put their own cash into the purchasing of players. Vinai and Raul are now in charge of Arsenal (top 10 in world football revenues) But that’s still not enough- fans want additional spend… Read more »

No more dropping Lacazette either

West ham was the only game he’s started that we’ve lost. Some stat that.

I jus want us to replace Mustafi, Ramsey and buy a Hazard replica.

Imagine if we had VVD, Alli and Hazard in our line up?

If we sell appropriately, shouldnt cross more than 80 mil. Its absolutely doable.

Also at this point I believe if we manage to get 5 points of Manu, city and spuds game I will be very happy.

Just keep winning against lower teams and we can get to 3rd.

Also win against Manu and maybe throw the towel on FA cup, concentrate on Europa and Prem.
