ARSENAL FIXTURE PILE-UP – MOVEMENTS OUT IN JAN, WHERE TO LOOK?

by .

One of the big improvements Mikel Arteta needs to make in 2022 centres around how we tackle the top 2 sides. We show far too much respect to City and Liverpool. It wasn’t like that during his first season, but lately, those games have felt like a loss before we’ve kicked a ball.

Well, guess what, it seems like the first two fixtures of next year are likely going to be: Manchester City and Liverpool.

We drew them in the League Cup. Brendan Rodgers team gave up a decent lead last night and lost on penalties. Our semi-final with them is slated for Jan 4th.

Liverpool might be the best semi-final. They played second-string against Leicester. I’m not sure Jurgen Klopp really cares too much about winning that trophy because he has a genuine chance at CL and the League this season. Not the same for Arsenal. I’d be surprised if Arteta took it as lightly. He knows that a League Cup is massive for a young side. It’s an opp to galvanise the fan base, the players, and the club around a fat new contract for himself.

Still, it’s a lot to ask in the new year. City and Liverpool twice. Two losses there and everyone starts to get a little bit shaky going into a very tough Phase 5 of the season.

PHASE 5:

Spurs (A)

Burnley (H)

Wolves (A)

Brentford (H)

Liverpool (H)

Watford (A)

Leicester (H)

Villa (A)

I’m getting ahead of myself here, we’re still in Phase 4 and we have 3 games left of the 10. I think we were aiming for 20 and we’ve been a bit all over the place. Painful losses to Liverpool, United, and Everton have made it tough. Below is where we are compared to everyone else.

We’re sitting 3rd over this period, which is great, until you realise that there are quite a few teams that have had games cancelled. So those three losses could weigh quite heavily on us if everyone around us wins their games.

The team I’m worried about is Spurs. They’ve dropped out of Europe, Conte is a top manager, they are team that has tasted the top 4 in recent history. There will be tough days for them. Their Italian super manager is a brat though, if he starts losing, he will point the players, demand money, and not worry if things go off the rails. So I wouldn’t count on them being elite just because he’s there.

The job is quite simple for us, we’ll drop short of our 20 point title because the last game of our run is Manchester City, but if we can win our next two, we’ll finish the session with 18 points. Could we nick a draw against City? Doubtful, but we can dream.

Overall, we have to look at the bigger picture and the mission. Be within spitting distance of top 4 by the January 2nd. Win our next two games against Norwich and Wolves and we’ll be there. Then we can start thinking about goals for Phase 5 of the season, which will be tougher, but you’d have to be more confident with a team that knows who they are and where their level is.

The sub-plot is how we deal with the fitness of the squad through this current period. Our injury list has been shy of names this December, thankfully.

Will Arteta use Norwich and Wolves to rotate? Did Pepe or Eddie do enough to merit first-team action?

We shall see.

Arteta’s press conference didn’t really give much insight into how he’s thinking.

It doesn’t seem like Patino is an option to replace Thomas Partey.

I think it’s unlikely Jack Wilshere is going to step into the fold, despite the .com giving him a lot of camera love lately.

Arteta has said there could be forgiveness in the system for Auba. I’d take it with a grain of salt. He has to say that. If players think there’s never forgiveness for mistakes, it can be demotivating.

It also feels unlikely we’re going to spend big money on anyone… but who knows there.

The most action might happen with players leaving the club.

There are lots of clubs in Europe that need goalscorers to push close to their objectives. We have Eddie and Lacazette with 6 months on their deals and we also have Auba who could be pushed out on loan to get him out the hair of the training staff. That is quite a lot of uncertainty… but there could be movement on all of them. Lacazette, oddly, seems like the least likely to be moved on at this stage.

Bernd Leno can’t possibly stay on for the rest of the season. He’s an international keeper and he has World Cup ambitions. If he leaves, that leaves us with a very inexperienced back-up keeper, so we’d have to move on a replacement.

Then you have the tantalizing prospect of Newcastle in the market. They need defenders, midfielders, and attackers if they’re going to stay up. Will they come knocking?

OMG I HAVE NO IDEA BUT I’M EXCITED.

Patino has been linked with Barcelona. What, they think because he has Spanish parents, that makes his DNA anything other than red&white? Bitch please. Charlie is ours. He already has a song. There’s no better club in the world he could be at right now for his development.

Right, short one today, I’m still testing positive…but that line is getting lighter. Will there be a Christmas Eve miracle? Pray to the gods of football my friend.

… if praying isn’t you thing, just tune into our podcast below.

Pedro, you start by saying that we pay too much respect to City and Liverpool and then go on to say if we can get a draw against City it will be a miracle??

‘ Wolves going to be fresh for our game on 28th, now their Boxing Day called off

‘That’s is what I feared.
Once you cancel one match in that chain of two matches on Dec 26 and 28, cancel ALL the other games on that day.

There’s such a thing as anti-competition

Dissenter

Surely they re going to make this moose cup a one leg semifinal

All four managers left in the semis are calling for that.

Karsa

For once I disagree with several points in the post.

Points on the board rather than games in hand for me.

18 points and 4th place after this phase will be a good return.

Never worry about the Spuds.

The players will know the Auba situation inside out.

I expect one decent money incoming in January, together with a couple of loans.

We can’t be expected to play a fully rested Wolves on Tuesday.

Habesha Gooner

I don’t understand the phases of the season in pedro’s writing 😂😂😂. I see it as “next game, get three points” type of thing. Just kidding. Anyway, Newcastle aren’t coming in for anyone other than may be AMN. Wolves, Leicester are rumored to be still interested. If he leaves I am certain we will bring in a CM. Arthur has been linked with us. Wijnaldum, Kessie and Zakaria also have had rumors. Eddie and Chambers will also be targets for teams on a cheap deal. Auba is staying because of his wages, Lacazette isn’t leaving because he is neccessary now.… Read more »

Get wijnaldum and we’ll be rocking !!

Zacharse

Hopemthe club does some serious business in jan. We need squad players bad

Bob N16

Kjelli, I had the same thought.

Rich

If we move in January, I think we’ll do it early

A central midfielder on loan, maybe Wjnaldum, Ramsey, or Arthur,

Kulusevski’s name keeps coming up, if we can dispose of Aubameyang/Pepe, then a loan with obligation wouldn’t surprise me

Never seen him play, but from snippets I’ve heard, he’s another model professional, speaks fluent English, but numerically we’d need departures to make this 1 happen

HolyFudge

Last season we were shithousing the top teams, three at the back and counter, which is why we did pretty well against them. This season the expectation is that we try to go toe-to-toe, playing our own pressing-game. It worked against City for about 10 minutes, until they got that fluke goal on the first attack they looked in trouble. I also felt the Pool game was closer than the scoreline would suggest, a lot of fine margins in that game. But as everyone knows, it’s very very dangerous to go out and play progressive football against Pool and City… Read more »

Nelson

The Pools won’t have Salah and Mané in January. The team that they fielded yesterday will be the best they can come up with.

Habesha Gooner

The defeatist attitude hasn’t left us yet. We just roll over whenever we face someone better than us or a team we should be expected to beat. Man United away this season should have been a different result. We just gave them the game. It is very annoying and we need to cut it out. We need to smash liverpool if they come out with youngsters. Especially as we will probably be go strong to win a trophy.

DivineSherlock

I’d expect we rotate , play Tavares , Cedric Holding against Norwich . White Ramsdale Saka Laca play both games from the start . ESR plays Wolves , Odegaard plays Norwich . Something like this would help.

Bergkamp63

Quite frankly, who give a sh*t about the carrier bag cup ? I hope they don’t risk anyone’s fitness on this and concentrate on the main target of European football, Europa League at minimum and top 4 as main priority.

Anything else doesn’t really matter if we want to attract top talent.

TR7

Top 4 obviously should be our main target. For a big club it is absolutely unacceptable to be out of CL for more than half a decade. I am still frustrated by points dropped against United and Everton. Those 6 points could possibly cost us a top 4 finish.

TR7

*frustrated about dropped points

TR7

Not that we are strongly linked with him but Zakaria is a very poor midfielder. Should not be on our radar at all.

Time Up

I agree with TR7

The dropped points against really shit ManU and Everton hurt the most, and could be the reason we miss top 4.

We lost not because we were the lesser team, they were both there for the taking. We lost because we had less experience of managing the game, froze and the manager inability to use his subs correctly.

Time Up

We should play City with no fear, the supporter must make the place like hell, we feel with this generation of players there’s something happening at the club and against City it must be THE BANG time we’ve been waiting for,

A midfield of Partey, Xhaka and Odegaard should be good enough to complete at home.

Also, I think we should play ESR, Martinelli and Saka up top to counter their false9 AKA extra midfielder with ESR dropping to help the midfield.

Pedro, We are hearing all kinds of rumors about a swap between Auba and several Juventus players (Arthur, Ramsey, Kulusevski). It certainly makes sense for both teams, depending on which one we most need and which one Juve is willing to let go. I’m not crazy about Ramsey, if only that we have that position covered. But the other two make sense, possibly for a permanent swap. Of course, if it isn’t Ramsey then we may have to subsidize Auba’s contract. But Juve need goals at the moment and he is an enticing option. My wild card is Holding to… Read more »

Let’s not get too snooty about the League Cup. Obviously top four now is priority number one but I don’t see how we can’t take both on at this moment in time. Klopp will likely roll out the same side as last night so there is a good chance we can contest a final against one of our London rivals. That’s the excitement we crave as fans. When it comes to Arsenal. I’ve always been an optimist – but my view is tempered with grains of commonsense. The current first pick is capable (almost) of beating any side in PL. The two exceptions are Man C and Liverpool. But Liverpool won’t be a problem in Carabao, because we’ll be desperate to win, and they won’t care much. What is likely to happen in Jan transfer window is anybody’s guess – even for Arteta (as Pedro points out) everything is preceded with an ‘if’ or ‘unless’ – the ‘if’ dependent on who goes and who is available. Raul, Pierre was quite positive on Ødegaard recently. Even if it’s a change of view, it’s a good thing….also, admitting mistakes is a very healthy trait, rather than secretly, stubbornly, wishing for failure to get rid of Arteta, as some do here. There are some people here that you can feel that from. Also Pierre, Good description of Eddie’s game. Last season Arteta used him all wrong trying to have him drop deep. Eddie is levels below Martinelli if you are being honest with yourself Pierre.

Anybody will tell you that who watches both play. Your weird obsession with Eddie and Willock is just that- weird.

£25m was excellent business for Willock who is playing like a Lee Cattermole regen for Newcastle. The kid went on a purple patch scoring patch and we cashed in for a top fee given his limitations.

Just like £35m was daylight robbery for Iwobi on our part. Willock is definitely better than Iwobi mind.

It is noticeable that Martinelli’s game is now more about making good runs without the ball rather than with the ball. His pace is lethal and by making intelligent runs from deep without the ball , he is able to find himself in some very dangerous positions. He had shown a hell of a lot more at senior level than Eddie even prior to this season and is x2 years younger and an import from the Brazil lower leagues.

Pierre

I’ve been critical of Arteta’s decision making over the past 18 months but I have always been 50/50 on whether he is the right man for the club. Also, nothing wrong in giving credit where it’s due and I’m beginning to see improvement in many of our young players coming through the system. Yep or we nuke their value by messing them around here and sending them out disgruntled on loan spells.

Has happened with Mavropanos who is killing it at Stuttgart and is now a serious target for Dortmund for actual money instead of the loose couch change we got from Stuttgart for him.

It is understandable that Arsenal and the Manager want Nketiah to sign a new contract, because as matters stand he will be leaving the club this summer on a Bosman or in January for a fraction of his transfer valuation. When you see also what is going on with both Aubameyang and Lacazette it has to be of concern that the club could be losing all three for peanuts. Did not know that Messi not only holds the record of most goals in a calendar year (91 goals) but also of most assists in a year (36). Also he has the most assists in footballing history.

By the time he ends his career he will have the most no of goals, assists, dribbles, goals from outside the box and solo goals. What a player !!

As far as I know, England is the only country who has three domestic competition. Maybe that’s why that German finds it strange. I think it is good to have the league cup. They were the better team.
I was there with my then 12 year old son.
If Arsenal were to sell Eddie and I really hope they don’t, it would have to be for far more than £10m.

Edouard has yet to prove himself.

Graham Not in the premier league. But he has proven it in Scotland. And he hasn’t been getting minutes yet so the jury is still out in the premier league. I like Eddie. He is perfect as an alternative. I dont want him to leave for free, but he isn’t starting for any top 6 club. Chelsea have Lukaku, City are playing striker less eventhough they have a much better player than Eddie in Jesus, Liverpool have Jota and Firminho, Tottenham have kane, United have Ronaldo and Cavani, Leicester have vardy Even Westham have Antonio. So where is he starting… Read more »

Wenger wasn’t forced to field a young team. He cost us that trophy. Walcott was absolutely on fire that day tho

China “I like Eddie and want him to stay, but Pierre serious question –If martinelli has done very little in the last two years, what exactly has Eddie done in that time?” My comment from earlier ” , I would say that neither have ripped up trees in the last 2 years for one reason or another .”, And they haven’t. Which obviously means that Eddie hasn’t done a lot either . Have a little read back and you’ll see that i have never compared the 2 or said Eddie was better than Martinelli, unlike weagle who stupidly said that… Read more »

” Instead they went for a better player in Edouard for the same asking price of Eddie.”

Probably just better to say that every attacking player in the premier league is better than Eddie and be done with it.

The only problem with that is Eddie will probably have the best goals per minute in all comps by the end of the season…

He’s been having a very very good season for Florentina over here, basically starts every game, got a goal the other day too. His career hasn’t pettered out in the slightest and there’s buzz Milan and even Juve may be interested. Each time I’ve watched Florentina he has been very impressive, he’s no Kante but he’s a very good player and maybe more suited to the league here

Goals per minute should take into consideration which competition the goals are scored in – Eddie gets most of his goals(and appearances) in the cups.
