NORTH LONDON DERBY DAY BLOG

by .

THE BIG DAY IS HERE.

Arsenal go to war with Tottenham at The Emirates.

The first MEGA game since fans have been allowed back in the ground.

The first game of this season that truly, truly counts.

This is a cup final, there is no doubt about it, the boys have to show up.

On paper, it’s quite simple for me. Arsenal have a better team, Spurs have better individual talent.

Moura, Alli, Kane and Son are going to be problematic. Kane can kill you from anywhere, he lacks pace, but he’s one of the sharpest strikers in the game. Son is lethal on the counter, we know what a Kane ball over the top can do to Arsenal. All of those players love playing against Arsenal. You can know about their qualities and still not be able to do anything about it.

Spurs have been dreadful this season. They are still a low margins operation in big games. They had 2 shots on target against Chelsea last week despite a good run in the first half. They totally collapsed in the second half, Chelsea created 14 shots, 10 on target. They were awful against Palace, managing just 2 attempts all game. I thought they were second best against Wolves and City.

… but you know how it goes. Form doesn’t count, it’s about who shows up on the day. Today, it simply has to be us.

There are some things we’re looking for.

Granit Xhaka is weirdly splitting fans down the middle. For me, he’s out the side currently because he did two stupid things concurrently. Since he’s been absent, we’ve won all our games. I’d prefer to have Sambi starting out there. He moves the ball faster, he’s more aggressive with his passing, and he’s more mobile.

I don’t think there’s really a debate on which keeper we want out there. But this is a big one. Doing bits against Burnley was huge for him, but that’s bread and butter. What we want to know is how does he do under the bright lights of a derby game? More shots to deal with, more pressure, better oppo. This game is massive for his season.

It’s also a big game for Ben White. The ‘he gets bullied’ narrative was binned against Burnley, and made to look a little laughable as Ivan Toney dominated against Liverpool’s defenders yesterday… but he needs a complete game. We want to see elite passing, we don’t want him putting others under pressure, and we’d like to see some leadership. On the Brentford story, are we at the point now where we can say they are a bit good? Liverpool’s best team conceded 3. We lost with 9 players on the outpatient list. You always want to win, but it’s pretty clear they are no whipping boys this season.

Outside that, we have to look to our big names to bring home the bacon. Auba needs to keep running, because the goals will come. Odegaard, who is one of the best pressers in the league currently, needs to lead and show us the special sauce he has. Finally, we need our wide players to show up with shots on target today. ESR, Pepe, and Saka need to bring the levels up.

This is also a special one for the fans, who have been excellent all season. We need to tear the roof down for this one. Encourage the players, make them feel special, and make loads of noise all game. We’ll be doing out bit on the site. I honestly can’t believe I have to say it, but if you are in the comments here sniping at Arsenal on a NLD day, you’ll go in the bin. No one wants to read it. This is an Arsenal blog, if you behave like a rival fan, you’ll be moved on.

Back to some more context. If we win today, we’d be 5 points off top of the table Liverpool. United lost to Villa, Liverpool dropped points to Burnley. The MIGHTY Leicester, the team with the biggest fan club going because they make Champ Man signings… drew to Burnley. The Premier League is outrageously strong this season, it’ll be close between the teams below City and Liverpool. Let’s hope we can keep pressure on the chasing pack.

Ok, that’s me done for now. Tune in for an OTW podcast right after the game.

SamesongRamsdale may have cojones, but he is not exactly a talisman. The last 2 clubs he played for Bournemouth and Sheffield United got relegated! If we promote
him and we get relegated that would be three in a row.

Spurs rated IDE as much as I did
They gave him so much space and time in the first 35 minutes .. he punished them for it

Great win for the Arsenal
Don’t use a NLD win as a gloating cudgel and then wonder where every one is.

Off the celebrate the victory. It’s only 3pm here .
Have a lovely day people.

“Just heard part of interview of Souness and King following game. They must have been watching a different game to me. They talk like Spurs were “unlucky”with some of the decisions!!”

Both ex spuds what do you expect. Sounness was even calling Spuds “we” today

Ishola70

Apologies to the Pepe fan club on here but his days should be numbered now at Arsenal unless he is happy with a regular bench position with the side. The attack today was so much better without him. More direct, more cohesive as an overall unit. We all recognise Pepe’s individual talent but it doesn’t many times result in him blending in really well with the rest of the attack. We saw plays today where there was an early direct quick pass rather than stopping on the ball and trying to beat players which we see quite a lot from… Read more »

Slowly ridding the first XI of suspect players or if you prefer some question marks against them.

It looks like we will have to wait another season for Xhaka to be ousted but two out of three ain’t bad.

“Don’t use a NLD win as a gloating cudgel and then wonder where every one is.”

.Did you really have the nerve to type that!!!! If we’d have lost you would be all over this blog as usual, gloating. A good win and all the usual whiners go into fucking hiding!! I wasn’t on here when we lost to City & Chelsea and you couldn’t wait to slag me off..!!!! . You are so obvious with your game it’s embarrassing. Enjoy your day being miserable, you can come on here tomorrow and play your predictable game. Pedro knows

4 interceptions. 100% aerial duel success. 95% pass accuracy. 0 times dribbled past. 0 errors leading to shots. He only gave the ball away twice all game. Solid. Ben White stats…… For the less intelligent people who might read this….. Keep in mind that many of his passes are are much longer and incisive than typical defenders. So he would be expected to have a lower completion percentage. Also he had a great directed header that began the move for one of our goals. For the embarrassed haters today….. the proper response to this is not to start talking about… Read more »

Ishola.

I think today’s team selection was interesting. Pepe is going to be more of an impact player than a starter because he’s a bit too predictable & one dimensional. Dangerous player though Saka provides more and is comfortable going both ways as we saw with his goal and his assist.. It’s a squad game and we need strong competition for places. The team has still a long way to go but Arteta will learn more from match day performances than anywhere else.

Ishola70

Yes AFC Forever at this stage impact sub role seems best for Pepe.

And that’s quite a good sub to bring on isn’t it.

But not a starter.

He doesn’t gel well enough with his attacking counterparts. Got the talent but doesn’t really gel.

We must keep playing this more direct attacking forward play now with quick interchange and early release of the ball.

Pepe would stunt this if a first team starter.

Matt

AFC forever single handidly managing to drive people away from the site.

Taking more satisfaction in gloating than the actual win.

All arsenal fans enjoyed the win. Loads more would be on here celebrating it if it wasn’t for you. Why don’t you go back into hiding like you were at the start of the season. Condescending twat of the highest orders!

AFC Forever

Ishola

Positional play dictates movement. If other players can contribute goals regularly, then Pepe (at the time of writing) is not an attractive selection because he doesn’t do enough, compared to what Saka offers. This might do him good. Having options is no bad thing but Pepe has been underwhelming at times & has to offer more

LoveSausage

Pepe will never work in a team that’s trying to play with sort of structure. It’s a shame, he has talent. But the best thing for all parties would be if we could sell him for a decent chunk of change to a team that plays on the counter attack. Win-win.

We can use him as an impact sub for a while but he doesn’t have the personality to be effective in that role over a longer period of time. He’s a confidence player and he’ll find it hard to warm the bench.

Nigel Tufnel

Bacaryisgod said something sensible and made me think : “Nigel. Yeah, I would think Xhaka’s inclusion makes it less likely Partey gets injured. If we had Pepe in there instead of Xhaka with Odegaard dropping deeper, then it would be more likely.” Smart thinking. But I was really focused on the state of mind of some dumb commenter that Raulishuss called out. Why even think like that as a fan? It just shows such poor priorities and mentality. Starting from the early comments, the obsession with Xhaka here is so silly here. I wouldn’t have started him today, but really?… Read more »

Lovesausage “We can use him as an impact sub for a while but he doesn’t have the personality to be effective in that role over a longer period of time. He’s a confidence player and he’ll find it hard to warm the bench.” Yes there would be concerns regarding this point. In theory and looking at what he could bring as an impact sub player then all good. But as you say doubts over the long run with him being a bench player due to personality of the player. If he has to sit out many games and be on… Read more »

LoveSausage

Yes. I like Pepe but he is a bit too predictable. On his day he is a right handful but just not consistent enough. Like I said, Saka demonstrated why he offers so much more. But it’s good to have options that offer something different when it’s not working

Nigel Tufnel

Matt….

You just took it in the mouth LOL

Ishola70

Xhaka did well for the first goal. He made an interception in the Spurs half that initiated the attack that led to the goal. I praised him for that at the time on here during the match for that. It’s not as if he can never ever contribute anything positive. But at the same time let’s not kid ourselves that over longer periods Xhaka is not a suspect player. He clearly is. And if we want to aim for the real top then it would not include Xhaka. But as said before at least some others now look to be… Read more »

LoveSausage

Ishola,

Yeah, we’ll take a loss on him but I think that was always going to be the case considering how much we overpaid.

Impact subs are hard to come by these days. It’s crazy to think there were once players as talented as Solskjaer who would spend the best years of their careers in that role. Takes a certain kind of mentality.

These days it’s more about having good rotation. Which is tricky when there’s no European competition.

Matt

Pedro

Of course you are going to have that opinion when it comes to your lap dog.

Great win. People like AFC do not take away any of my enjoyment from the result, it just makes me want to not come anywhere near here. I reckon that is true of. A lot of people.

Ishola70

AFCForever
” I like Pepe but he is a bit too predictable.”

If predictable means being a bit too individualistic in his play then this description is correct.

I don’t think anyone is saying that Pepe has never been involved in a quick sweeping Arsenal forward play but we know if there is a player in the side who is going to step on the ball, try to take on players and slow down the overall attack it’s going to be Pepe.

Saka takes on players but he is more direct in his play in comparison to Pepe.

Taking more satisfaction in gloating than the actual win

What are you on about Matt? Seriously? Sounds like you’re a bit put out by an Arsenal win today?

You and the other ivory towers lot in here, stroking your beards, wading through past posts to prove your points, waxing lyrical about who we should’ve signed instead of this, that and other. If you lot never come back than fucking great, that means we’re winning…

This place will be a lot happier without your misery even after a f***ing NLD win ffs

Words on a blog

With ESR, Saka and Odegaard in front of Xhaka and Partey we have structure AND fluidity.

Brilliant performance all round and shout out to the two centre backs and Taomi, whose were brilliant

Words on a blog

Tomi

LoveSausage

AFC Forever,

I’m buzzing for Saka now! He’s been off pace since that penalty and even today he wasn’t 100% in certain moments in the game. But there’s nothing like putting up numbers in NLD to boost confidence. Really hope this will be a turning point. It was funny, after an entire season of people hyping Graelish, that Saka was the better player in the Euros. Hopefully he’ll get back to that level.

Matt

Matt B

I made it pretty clear I am not put out by the win, far from it. Funny how this place is quieter when we win than when we lose. Two possible explanations for this:

1) arsenal fans are actually upset that we won, which is what you are suggesting
2) arsenal fans can’t be arsed with all the gloating and hypocrisy from people who were nowhere to be seen a few weeks ago

LoveSausage

Anyone on here who feels that gloating after an NLD bashing is aimed at them needs to check their priorities or just pull on a white shirt. I’m no fan of Arteta and Xhaka, but come on… This is the most important game of the season.

Matt

‘ This. I think some people go out of their way to find fault. Straight after a big win it’s an odd way to behave. You have to remember Ramsdale & White were abused on social media and on this blog long before they had even played a game. I’m not sure how you explain that or why the usual suspects go missing after a good win’

Because they can’t stomach listening to this sort of shit from from someone who was missing in action for months.

Vintage Gun

I second that. The defence were superb today. Tierney and Tomi worked their socks off and Gabbi White were colossal at CB. Good mix of skill and power.

Special shout out to Ramsdale also. I was a massive critic of his signing, but since his debut at West Brom he’s been SUPERB. It’s still early days for him but i’m fully behind the kid and hope he continues to grow.

AFC Forever

LoveSausage

Yes Saka is such an honest lad. He’s showed real courage after that penalty miss & the morons abusing him. His form suffered a bit but he was superb today. I love the lad,

Matt

Spin, spin, spin Pedro. What a joker you are now. What I wrote was my opinion and you’re making out I’ve been proven wrong on all of them? It’s early days and the jury is still out on most so maybe you should tone down the smug a bit. The one I will say we will admit to have been wrong on is Ramsdale. Again, I hope I am wrong on them all because I am man enough to admit that and would rather Arsenal were winning than them Being shit just so I can say I was right. Again,… Read more »

If I have to tolerate being called an Arteta Fanboy at 58 years of age, I’m sure you can suffer a bunch of fans enjoying an Arsenal win against Spurs, aged 10.. Unless you’re a Spud, of course because you sure sound very pissed off today. for some reason.

Mulerise14

Tets is on charm offensive talking about fans and supporters again…..it is simple, this is a team we all love, they get our support when they are doing well and even if they looses a match but not wanting of effort. This is Arsenal, to every action there is a reaction. A sub par performance from coach and players would attract as a matter of fact it’s criticism….a woeful performance for instance against Brighton,we will be on their backs.so onward and forward….hoping we get back our groove this season

LoveSausage

Samesong,

Loved seeing Henry in that ugly ass retro shirt. Although, him showing up very publicly with Daniel Ek like that makes me wonder if he was hoping for a good PR opportunity in case of a loss. Might be a tinfoil hat theory though.

Spudnik

Pedro,
Loved the podcast. Put a big smirky grin on my face. I thought today was immense. The crowd and the football were super charged at times. Best football i’ve seen under Arteta. I feel there is something seismic about this and it’s a massive opportunity for Arteta and the team to build some momentum. Brighton is a biggy now, but a biggy I’m confident about.

Matt

AFC

‘’ There is a saying about those who protest too much. Had we lost today I think we all know how much fun Matt would have had. These hypocrites can dish it out but can’t take it back’

I’m still here mate so what can’t I take? You’re the first to bitch about people who dare to have anything critical to say after a win, but yet you seemingly can’t enjoy the win for what it is without referencing other fans and how they must be hating the fact we won. How is your position any better!

Good analysis: Pierre….. September 26, 2021 19:34:36 I like the positions that saka and smith rowe took up today, not too wide and very often within the width of the penalty area. The inside forward position that they are playing should also give Aubameyang the support he needs.I have been harping on for ages about getting our creative players within the width of the area as it is the most dangerous attacking position to take up and makes it easier to pick out a runner into the box..Crossing from wide positions …forget it , non productive, let the full backs provide… Read more »

SO who remembers our last ‘statement’ win against Spurs a little less than 3 years ago? This was another 3 goal win but under Emery with Torreira’s goal being the emotional climax to that game. That felt great but this one feels different. You look at the exciting full-backs, the potential of a great CB partnership, Partey bossing the midfield, Smith-Rowe, Saka and Odegaard buzzing around behind a revitalized Auba and there really is hope for the future. I was at the Norwich game and I said at the time, there was something about the atmosphere in the crowd. Fans in the stadium are a knowledgeable bunch and over the years you sometimes feel something is building. Don’t know what it is exactly.

LoveSausage

Bacary,

That 4-2 win definitely felt more like it happened despite the players we had. I would have never guessed that things would go downhill like they did for Torreira but there was more than a handful of players there that were terrible. This win felt more in line with the level of talent we have.

AFC Forever

“Ramsdale is electric on the pitch, fist pumping saves. That all helps.”

The way he high-fived Tomi after his clearance says everything. That will to win is infectious. Team spirit is so important & that’s part of the player profiling. It’s why Guendouzi & perhaps one or two others had to go

bacaryisgod

Absolutely, LoveSausage-couldn’t agree more.

Pedro-let’s not get too far over our skis though. Still in 10th place after 6 games but this performance lifts the gloom in a major way. Now we have to show that our team can perform every week like this and that we can withstand the injuries that will likely come our way at some point. The very good news is that unlike Tottenham we don’t have a crappy fake European trophy to play for.

If there’s one thing I hope he takes away from this game it’s that there are benefits to not being so rigid. Today, the defensive organisation was great and resembled a Guardiola team. Pedro,

You made a point that is the ultimate mic drop.

I’ve said it here before but it bears repeating.
The way some cretins talk about our players here…..
They would never ever stand in front
of ” little” Ben White, or “weakling” Ødegaard as they’ve been called here, and worse, they’d never say it in front of them, or in an Arsenal pub.

Love Sausage:

3 Favourite Moments of the Game (not the most important ones but I loved each of them)

1. Ben Whites sliding tackle in the first couple of minutes. The crowd roared and the tone was set.
2. Auba sprinting from twenty yards back to win a header in front of the stationary Spurs player (I think from a Ramsdale kick). It typified Auba’s drive and hunger today.
3. ESR bursting through to receive Auba’s flick that lead to Auba’s goal. Just exhilarating movement.

Just watched that Ramsdale save again. No idea how he got to that, mad save.

What a lot of people didn’t realise was that Ramsdale was bought to be first choice ‘keeper. That may be why their was angst about the fee. Whatever it was, it looks a cracking decision he’s got something about him we’ve not had since perhaps Lehmann (who was nuts).
