AARON RAMSDALE DROP INCOMING

by .

My dad went on a stag-do with his younger cousins about 15 years ago, I wasn’t allowed to go. He had his own style, always, a sharp dresser if ever there was one. His best bit of work advice to me was.

‘If your clients aren’t talking about what you’re wearing, you’re wearing the wrong thing’

That has stood me well, being a bad dresser and all. Back to the point, he went on a Marbella stag do and decided he liked a £1000 cowboy jacket. It was black brushed leather with Eddie the eagle tassels so he looked like a bird when in the Jesus pose. Everyone told him he shouldn’t buy that jacket, but he wouldn’t listen, he knew it would crown his outfit… and that night, he was going to look like a hero.

He bought the jacket, owned the night, and never spoke about that jacket again.

To Arsenal fans, I think Aron Ramsdale is the jacket, we’re the friends wondering what’s going on… and there’s nothing we can do to stop the purchase. Arsenal are ten pints of data deep on this kid and they can already the dopamine hit when everyone is fawning over the tassels on the dance floor.

There is only one thing I can tell you to make you feel better… the same people that have identified Lokonga, White and Tavares are heavily skewing this decision. There’s something in his profile the club think they can work with. It’s not just him, it seems he’s quite popular in football circles, remember Chris Wilder is a proper coach and he made him his star signing (do NOT look at how that turned out). It is also worth noting that despite playing for relegated teams the past two seasons, both sets of fans voted him player of the season.

He’s also very, very young for a Premier League keeper.

So we’ll see. I’m just happy we’re bringing in a backup keeper. Even happier that the money would suggest he’s coming in to replace Leno as #1 as soon as the German drops a major footwork clanger against Brentford.

What I’m not happy about is that we are heading into the first game of the season having not added a single body to our attack. Arsenal had the 3rd best defence in the league last season and an attack that dropped just 55 (9th). Chelsea finished 8th for goals and spent £100m on Lukaku. I appreciate that attack often starts in defence in 2021. Ben White and a keeper that can pass will show us plebs that in due course. However, it is still quite baffling to be at a stalemate with our strikers and to still be fumbling around hoping Leicester or Madrid decide to deal this week.

Brentford will be a tough game, just because they have no history of the Premier League yet. We should beat them, but I’ll be honest, I don’t think I’ve ever known an Arsenal start to the season to be so pessimistic. There are a couple of reasons for that.

  1. Arteta burned all his ‘hope’ capital at the start of last season with that dreadful 14 game run. If you were a non-emotional fan, you’d be looking at the 60% of games we played post-Christmas for clues as to how we’re going to play this season. But you’re not, you are a hot mess of emotions and all we’re thinking about is how bad that start was last season.
  2. Preseasons against London rivals was a bad idea. Nice if you win, but back to back derby losses really was a waste of energy.
  3. Our start is hard.

A lot of the fear isn’t grounded in truth. I saw someone write ‘I just wish my team could register 15 shots a game’… our worst showing this summer was Spurs and we had 11 shots, 2 on target just like them. Chelsea 14, Watford 15+, Millwall 15+, Rangers 19, Hibs 19… shots hasn’t been the issue, but our forwards certainly have been.

There are going to be a lot of eyeballs on that teamsheet on Friday.

Is it going to be Hierahy FC this season? Are we going to see the rebirth of Laca/Auba as a mainstay? Will Arteta panic and start Mo Elneny in midfield next to Granit Xhaka? Who will start as right back, because Hector has been atrocious? Will we have to see 4 bad results to see the best starting 11?

Many questions I will look to tackle tomorrow.

Before we get there, I wanted to thank everyone who has been tuning in to the podcast this summer. We had our best week ever last week! We’re going to continue to bring you podcasts with LIVE video as the season goes on. One minor shift I want to make you aware of… we’ll be doing advertising on the podcast and a little bit with a great sponsor on the site. I went back and forth on it… but the reality is, I can’t ask people to do this for free, and this platform is expensive to run… servers, tools, microphones, WILD nights out in Vegas, all these annoying little subscriptions.

Anyway, jump on the latest videos, know that cancel culture exists and YOU made me change my haircut, and leave a nice 5* rating on iTunes.

DivineSherlock – They’ve had a great summer, very interested to see how it all fits together for them. Could be great, could be underwhelming but financially its good business!

Pierre

Put it this way serge, if Ozil had played in the first half of last season would we have suffered such a chronic lack of creativity …of course not

Leftside

A day before the season and a back up goalie and a creative mid at the very least is yet to be sorted out. I can’t blame anyone for not being bullish about our prospects. I’m not sure if our transfer/negotiation team are inept or some of the other clubs are exemplary. Fofana was injured a week ago I believe, and inside a week Leicester sourced a Premier League proven replacement. We may not have funds currently to acquire Maddison’s services but for the fees touted for Aouar and Onana this summer, assuming they are interested in moving to Arsenal… Read more »

I have never rated Auba but yes it’s more a case of hope than any conviction when it comes to Auba that he will score goals again.

Emiratesstroller

There are 19 days left before the transfer window closes.

I am not surprised that the incoming transfer business has slowed down, because we need to offload players in departure lounge before we recruit any more outfield players.

The one position in team which needs to be resolved sooner rather than later is the goalkeeper. The idea that Runarsson or Okonkwo comes into team should something happen to Leno is frightening.

Bob N16

F*ck me, Pierre can’t let it go!

I’ve suspected all along we’ve been holding out for Odegaard.

I know our CFs need rationalising but I’ve felt that a RB upgrade was almost more important- can’t see it happening. White will need to stay fit otherwise we’ll be vunerable to pace down our right and whoever plays RW suffers significantly. Pepe in particular needs to make runs inside and an overlapping RB orchestrates that.

A back 4 of KT – Gabriel – White – ‘upgrade’ looks potentially excellent.

TR7

We don’t need a RB. Chambers, AMN and Soares can play there.

Emiratesstroller

Bob N16

It was obvious last season that the right side of Arsenal’s defence was brittle. Hopefully White
will provide the appropriate partner for Gabriel when he is match fit.

I am not convinced that Arsenal will recruit a RB in this transfer window. We have got three on
the books so even if Bellerin leaves we are still left with two.

DivineSherlock

DigitalBob

Their scouting and recruiting has been so better than us , since they won the title. Even sold Maguire for 80mn .

TR7

Think that’s the same with everyone at this point, just not sure it’s a cheque that’s cashable anymore. Can hope for a glut of goals, but Auba’s days as a clinical marksman throughout a season look over unless something drastically changes within him.

His decline is very noticeable because he doesn’t off a great deal else outside the finishing prowess, which was ranked 142nd best last season in the league I believe I found.

Laca and Pepe were 6th and 19th respectively for shots to goals.

Bob N16

True ES, my wishful thinking sells AMN, Bellerin and Holding leaving Soares as back up with Chambers main focus as White’s back up.

We may see AMN and Bellerin go but not sure of even that.

Emiratesstroller

Following on with discussion about RB it is fairly obvious that we are struggling to offload
Maitland-Niles.

Maitland-Niles has zero chance to make our team in midfield. So the question is whether he
will finally accept the view that his best option for a place at Arsenal is as at right back.

Habesha Gooner

Dear lord I hope these rumors of breakdown in negotiations for Ramsdale are true. And I hope we get Sam Johnstone. For 10 to 12 mil too. And at 28 he is still in that sweet spot age for Goalkeepers. He might even push Leno out.

The Bard

Elmo that tells you something. The idea that we are going to be seriously challenging for t4 is ridiculous. Currently we are mired in midtable and I don’t see any change on that front this season. Sure we’ve still got time in the transfer window but do we have the money to bring in a couple of top players ?

China1

I’m fairly confident Pierre has an ozil tattoo covering his entire body akin to that one in Alan partridge

Pierre you keep talking about ozils creativity but even when he played for the last couple of years he was getting fuck all assists and not creating many chances. This was then continued into turkey where he was gash

Let it go…

KAY Boss

People still counting on AMN? Those who vetoed his sale last season but miraculously kept by the club have been vindicated. He would have been at Wolves, got our money and perhaps might have upgraded that RB position.
That’s why the Willock deal makes a whole lot of sense.

Personally, I think some managers have a lot to answer for in the way they can almost destroy a players career. There are many instances at Arsenal in the last 12 months, Guendouzi, Ozil, Saliba , Torreira , AMN…. to name but few Mourinho did similar at Tottenham with DelibAlli and Eriksen. The stupid thing is that some fans start believing the rhetoric that comes from the likes of Arteta and Mourinho. They can’t see how being ostracised by a manager affects a player’s career and these fans jump on the bandwagon and are usually proved wrong in the long… Read more »

I am a big Ozil fan. Ozil and Sanchez era was probably the best in last few years where we were scoring for fun. However, I got a chance to see Ozil in the stadium in his decline and his lack of efforts for the ball. You can’t take away someone’s talent, which he has a lot, but watching a loanee Ceballos (who was crap) trying to do more than Ozil in that game put me off. I could see something similar for Auba these days. Modern day football is not about the shirt and pride anymore, it’s about money.… Read more »

Arteta’s press conference literally all about transfers so far, says there’s still lots to do and he expects to see movement in the last part of the window.

Noted how you can see the speed of the window change the past week with clubs finally breaking their standstill, many things to work out still, but confident and with the owners backing to make changes.

DigitalBob

DivineSherlock – 80M for Maguire was great business. The way they operate is really first class from a board room level, Edu can certainly learn a lot from them!

WEagle – I would rather have Dumfries for 14M euros than this version of Bellerin that’s a defensive liability(I fear he will actually make Ben White look bad as the right side will continually be targeted). Bellerin actually wants to move on so that’s another reason to get rid.

I’d also rather have Dumfries at RB than Cedric or Chambers.

TR7

Charlie

You might be right. I for one wouldn’t be against trying our youngsters in case Auba and Laca continue to flatter to deceive. The front 3 of Laca, Pepe and Auba have little to no chemistry between them. We might see Eddie and Martinelli getting more opportunities as the season progresses.

Mb

Pepe needs to be sold. Enough of his 1 goal wonder in every 6 matches.

Vintage Gun

Bellerin should be nowhere near our starting Xl as he is a busted flush. I actually feel sorry for him on the pitch because i know he tries his best for us but that ACL did him dirty. Pace, flexibility gone.

The fact that Cedric and Chambers were preferred over him during our worst season in 25 years says it all. I understand we can’t sell him if nobody’s bidding, but to start him when all other RB’s are fit doesn’t make sense to me.

China1

Vintage yeah like many of our underperformers, re bellerin it’s not personal. But we want arsenal to be successful and he like so many others is detrimental to that so it’s hard to accept seeing his name on the team sheet and people have emotional reactions. Tbh it all goes to the management team for picking him, not selling him in previous years etc

WengerEagle

DigitalBob

So would I. I know that international tourneys aren’t worth solely going off as teams get burnt at times doing that (Janmaat, Pilar, Yerry Mina, Cheryshev, etc) but I did really like the look of Dumfries and his numbers at PSV are impressive too.

Very low risk, high reward type of signing for 14m euros which isn’t much over £10m.

Batistuta

14 million for Dumfries is a steal.

Wasn’t it on here last summer people carrying pitchforks saying no deal when we got offered 18 million for AMN but now doesn’t seem anyone will take him even for a loan it seems.

This club runs on emotions 99% of the time and that’s just horrible business practice

Batistuta

Deals to be had around Europe but we’re fucking around the premiership with clubs who don’t necessarily need the money

TR7 Auba/Laca/Pepe flat out hurts my eyes at this point, can find too many flaws with them all combined to be content watching. So far from where I personally would like to see us operate as a front three. I’m keen on a mobile CF that can move defenders around and provide a varied goal threat, with inverted wingers like Mahrez who are seamless in midfield areas, and intelligent during the build up. Instead it’s Lacazette never threatening in behind or running channels, then him struggling to turn from deep and get into scoring positions, and Auba/Pepe recycling the ball… Read more »

I disagree with your prioritisation.

It should be:
RCB to replace Luiz [ White is that replacement]
LB second string to replace Kolasinac. Tavares is replacement [we played second half season without second LB
GK Second string to replace Ryan
AMF to replace Odegaard.
CMF to replace Ceballos [Lokango is that replacement]

Other positions needing upgrade but requiring first players to be offloaded.
RB if two RBs leave.
CF if Lacazette leaves.

According to you all Arteta has to do is snap his finger and -lo and behold – miraculously the players he wants appear and the players he doesn’t want disappear.

“Our goal is to get the best version consistently that is going to bring us closer to winning football matches. That’s what I want from the team. If we do that consistently in every match we’re gonna be in a good place”

Gonsterous

China

That tactic sounds generational. Bet it took arteta ages to come up with it.

Emiratesstroller

When you prioritise recruitment the first step is to fill the holes in squad and team. I think that
Arteta and Edu has done that sofar whether you agree or disagree with the selections.

There are still two holes to fill in the squad which are GK and AMF.

Then if you have the budget and can offload additional unwanted players most notably at
RB and CF we can and should upgrade.

Funny how the spin now is lakonga was a key signing and makes a good window. He was bought as a backup, it’s a joke how the season now rests on his shoulders.

Let’s not spin a narrative that this summer has been handled well

Gbat

No point getting worked up over transfer rumours. The reporters don’t have much clue what’s going on. Reported yesterday that we’re close with Ramsdale for £24m + £6m. 9 hours later the same person said were not going above £20m.

The Odegaard rumour is another that changes daily. He’s staying. He’s leaving. He’s staying. Seen his price range from £30-70m.

DigitalBob

“Very low risk, high reward type of signing for 14m euros which isn’t much over £10m”

It is ridiculous to spend a lot on a backup Goalkeeper. If someone at Arsenal had sense, they would have bought Ryan. If they had a long term vision though, they would have brought in Onana. And it would cost no more than 7 mil in transfer fees. I wouldn’t think Ramsdale at 15 mil was a good idea let alone 30. For me the whole strategy of the window is off, emphasis on positions (CB 50 m) and markets.

When Europe is on its knees why are we fishing in the uk market. Granted we have a bloated squad but if you just cleansed out the deadwood for minimal moneis and be done with it. You then go to the continent and buy young high potential talent, some will flop but some may look good( lakonga).

HG We did not need to “buy” Ryan. His contract with Brighton ended in summer. Goalkeeper is the one position where a second string is unlikely to get much game time unless first string is out of form, injured or ill. That is certainly the situation at Arsenal where we are not playing in Europe this season. They’re not even little mistakes either, many of them have been catastrophic and damaging to the club.

I don’t know of a single blogger who frequents this blog who trusts or expects our transfer team to get the required/ necessary players in ,either before tomorrow’s match or by the end of the window.Let alone get rid of anymore deadwood.Astonishing really. When you think about it.They have had around 3 months to plan & target .Yet here we are.Edu brushing up his suntan & Arteteta BS that there are more arrivals on the way.Really?Who do they think they’re fooling. Our fanbase had 10 years of Wenger/Gazidis waffle every transfer window.we’ve heard it all. What they ( our transfer jockeys) don’t get… Read more »

I’m surprised your charges have been left unchallenged for so long
Totally shocked there’s no push back but wait for it, it is coming..

Honestly we are paying the price of giving a rookie manager so much power too early
Arteta is making all his mistakes on our dime, one day he might even become a proper manager. Arsenal is what Barcelona B was for Pep.

At least I am glad some fans see some sense. Arteta for me has to deliver starting from brentford. No more excuses. No more defending him due to lack of players. This is his team now and I want us to judge him as a we would any manager from now on.

Oh excuse me, he’s off to Inter and not Everton, as they embark on a truly exiting splurge following their title win, that’s his pedigree etched in stone.

We’ll ignore the bit about them torching the manager, selling their best talents and going on an Aldi recruiting binge this summer though, horribly inconvenient context.

Been touting the player as amongst the worlds best all summer, claiming we should be all over him for 30 mil, now he moves for a third of that you’re handing out L’s to others? I’d keep hold of one.

I believe Arteta when he says there’s more to come.
The window is still dormant but we all know there are players that have to be moved on from every club. The likes of PSG have to shift many players out to make room for Messi, Icardi has to leave.

There will be lots of movements in the last 1-2 weeks.

Arteta on course for his 19th mistake in his 19th month :

Martin Ødegaard has always been Arsenal’s priority, more so than James Maddison. Arsenal are now waiting on Real Madrid’s final decision on the player. Arsenal are ready to bid for Ødegaard. [@FabrizioRomano]

Odegaard isn’t coming again
Madrid were set to keep Ceballos ahead of Ode but Ceballos returned from the olympics with major ankle ligaments injuries
I expect that we’ll move to other midfield targets this week.
