CHASING THE PACK

by .

Well good morning to you all. I made a passing comment about Flo Balogun in my post yesterday and everyone seems to have taken it like it’s the most important snippet in world football right now.

I dislike some of the commentary that happens around these sort of things when it comes to ‘greed.’ Whatever he’s asking for cannot be construed as that. In life, you get what you ask for. If you don’t hustle your boss for raises, they’ll tend not to dish them out. Same is true of football.

Also, think about the pros and cons of what he’s being offered.

Stay at Arsenal for: Less money, less minutes, more pressure, less chance of success

Go to Germany for: More money, more minutes, equal development, RIGHT NOW

Phil Foden, who in my opinion has the potential to be generational, is 20, was earning about £29k a week. It’s good money, he’ll get a bigger deal with the next one, but it’s just ok money.

Jadon Sancho, who is the same age, went to Dortmund, he’s played way more games, he has a huge profile, and he earns about £200k a week.

Now, you can easily go the way of Lookman, McGuane, or Chris Willock… a ticket to the Championship. But if you fail in Germany, it’s probably easier to get a job than if you fail in the Premier League.

The baller move is Arsenal, that’s vision, that’s the view of a player that truly believes he’s going to the top.

If he has doubts, Germany all the way.

The Arsenal way is probably the most realistic it’ll be for the next decade. The player is 18 years old. Eddie, Auba and Lacazette will all be gone within the next 2 years. He will land minutes, he’ll develop, then he’ll be ripe just as the squad opens for him.

Will he take the move? Who knows… because football is delicate and you need to wring it for what it’s worth.

A bit of bad news on the fixture front sees Arsenal traveling away to Greece again just before our derby game against Spurs. Jose managed to have his fixtures switched, so they’d avoid going to Zagreb before the big game. Arsenal weren’t so lucky because fans of the same club can’t be allowed to roam in the same city at the same time apparently.

That’s a massive blow. It’s a long plane journey, a shit nights sleep in a hotel if we leave in the morning, and limited preparation. Still, it is what it is. We’ll have to be sharp with rotation and hope the adrenaline of the game carries us through. We certainly didn’t look leggy against Leicester this weekend. Winning gives you an extra kick.

Arsenal really needs to make the next 5 games count. Escape with 3 wins in the Premier League and the backend of our season looks a lot more manageable. Also, we need to make sure the Spurs game has something on it. Beat them and the gap could close to 2 points. Lose and there’s no St Totteringham’s this season.

You gotta take the wins where you can….

Before we go, I don’t want to harp on about the past. But it’s been a month since we dropped off a lot of squad mess. What have we seen so far? Mustafi and Kola leading the charge to oust the manager of Schalke? Check. Mesut Ozil, THE SHACKLED GOD OF CREATIVITY, hasn’t registered a goal or an assist, his side are out of form, and the player went off injured.

I don’t miss any of them.

Worth noting that Saliba continues to land very promising reviews. He has a bit of a weird cult around him, but at least he’s knuckling down, staying fit, and improving game to game. It’d be very nice to see him fighting for that 4th CB spot next season. Same goes for Dino M over in Germany.

Right, short one today, see you in comments land.

What, nothing on the useless excuse of a manager?

AngeAusArsenal

Yes it’s not a ideal to have to fly to Athens and back before the spuds but in reality it’s only a little over 3 and half hours. It’s not like the players will be shoved into cattle class, they’ll be up the pointy end of the plane snoozing with their headphones on. Try flying on the midnight/redeye for 5 hours just to get from Sydney to Perth.

Very different Thiago for Liverpool than we saw at Bayern.

NJ Gooner

First 11, at least for this game. And no. 9: Supermac!

NJ Gooner

Balogun doesn’t just potentially have those three ahead of him. He also has to face the prospect that we might buy somebody. That is a reasonable prospect. Eduoard is being touted as an option. MA needs to use Balogun for a few minutes now, to give him a taste of the premier league. What harm would that do against Burnley? That might give him some hope of a career here, suggest that he is ‘loved’ and respected (don’t underestimate its importance) and bond him a bit more to the club. The last ten minutes of a few games could make… Read more »

Once again the Spuds are the luckiest team in the EPL, they have been for years. By contrast Arsenal are probably the unluckiest team, yet only seperated by a couple of points! Liverpool continuing to crash and burn – so dependant on VVD to keep it all together. Liverpool without a shot on target at the 80 minute mark!

salparadisenyc

Liverpool within touching distance, this season is mental .
Have to say Chelsea looked quite saucy, Frank wasn’t playing that kind of ball.

Radio Raheem

I did say Thiago wasn’t going to be all that he was hyped up to be before his move to Liverpool. Said it pretty early. Great on the ball but too laden footed for me.

I watched a fair bit of Bundesliga last year and saw how well Bayern were without Thiago. Kimmich and Goretzka their best midfielders. Kimmich might be the best in Europe.

Radio Raheem

I’m there were Chelsea fans pointing to hidden metrics and all that in support of Frank before he got the chop 😂

Good player, a bit of a throwback. He’d be magic in the early 20s, 90s, 80s…all this high intensity pressing not ideal, especially if you’re playing for Liverpool.

Mason Mount has won me over though. Thought he was a hype job last season but watched him quite a few times now, quite impressive.

Imagine how pissed uefas gonna be when everton and west ham land the last 2 CL spots
Compared to the audiences liverpool arsenal and chelsea draw its a joke to them and wont be surprised when EL refs wind up favoring the remaining EPL sides in the EL

Regarding Thiago, Liverpool create everything thru flanks seems to effect him as well. Looks lost at times in this side and he’s not the only one. One shot on target tonight, Salah subbed with 30 min left chasing a goal.

Klopp looks shelled, players looked dusted. Time to adjust things for Jurgen.

Radio Raheem

Sal

True. But I think Thiago was meant to change how they attack bring a bit more variety and control. The injuries haven’t helped no doubt but I still don’t how his style will blend in with what they do.

Hard not to draw parallels between what is happening at Liverpool right now and what happened to Klopp at Dortmund. Only difference I feel is he has earned himself a couple of seasons of grace to try fix things. He’s a likeable character I hope he does it.

Dissenter

Regarding Balogun,
I expect him to leave if he truly fancies himself as a top prospect. That’s what I would tell him if he was family.
How can he stay when tabloid “news” is that we are considering offering Laca an extension?
For some reason, I don’t blame him… and I can’t fault Arsenal either.
We just happen to have too many people in front of him, some aren’t getting games at the moment.

salparadisenyc

RR Was just texting a mate about it, so many lines can be drawn from Klopps Dortmund to this Liverpool side, 2 very high octane seasons of touching nearly everything then decline, this collapse is miles ahead of what transpired with Dortmund took a couple seasons to really unravel with them finishing 2nd in the interim. Real duality for me as I despise Liverpool but how can you not rate and enjoy Klopp, so likeable. Would of been ideal Wenger replacement in 2014 or 15. It just makes you admire the work that SAF did at United.
It’s takes an exceptional manager to win a title but then it takes a generational manager to win a title back to back.

Well based on that Klopp is then a generational manager cracking Bayern’s juggernaut back to back in the Bundesliga winning in 2011 and 12.

Another title with Liverpool and three champions league finals in 10 years, winning one.
Anyone who replicates in another league has absolute sauce in my book, especially the Premier league.

Klopp is a giant. I agree
That back to back CL finals is proof of that and ending Liverpool’s title drought is another proof of that.

So Ozil has played 322 mins.. 6 appearances.. 0 goals, 0 assists 0 successful dribbles.. 1 shot on target. Fenerbace was in first when he arrived. lost 3 out of 5.. 3rd place now and out of the Turkish Cup and now injured. off for 4-6 weeks.
I still think best thing Arteta has done was taking the flack for moving Ozil on to the bench and relegating him to the sideline, permanently. . As Pedro said, don’t miss him at all and all that fanboy drama coupled with very little production that was his legacy the last several years.

Arsenal will need to make a decision this summer on whether we extend the contract of Lacazette or sell him. Currently he is our second string Centre Forward behind Aubameyang. If he leaves then we will need to bring in a new Centre Forward, because frankly neither Nketiah or Balogun are ready to be replacements. Their current status is third or fourth choice strikers and that is even debatable, because many consider that Martinelli is a better option. From a personal perspective I don’t believe that Nketiah will make the grade at Arsenal. He has had 2 years to prove… Read more »

Pedro were you being sarcastic when you said arsenal would be the baller move for Balogun since you also mention in the same paragraph, about how balongun will get money, less playing and developing time at arsenal. Our whole wage structure is broken, when we Give players like saka 30k a week, we have no room for negotiations for the likes of balogun and eddie. If balogun is getting paid more in germany, with more playing time and development as well as being challenged outside of football with the language and customs, then why would he want to stick at arsenal where he might get a chance to occasionally come off the bench??

Tierney is another one, who we may lose like ashley Cole back in the day, because we keep paying the heavy money to all the wrong people. Con(e) man included.

Before the start of the season , I read an article that said Klopp will not retain the league this season . Guess it was right. I’ll try to find and post it here.

Read the report and it is enlightening.

I was always dubious back in the days when we played Bayern on how they seem to be able to press for 90ms. Mandzukic was a pressing monster. Maybe our Alexis Sanchez had his own program as well.

EmiratesStroller Not sure if it’s only a renew or sell decision with Lacazette this summer. For example, let’s say no-one comes in with an acceptable offer for him. There may be a point where it makes more sense to just let him play out his final year. If we sell him at a discount this summer, you can be sure the cost of replacing him will be much higher. He certainly won’t sign for a one-year extension and we can’t offer a declining player more money to stay on. He’ll still be motivated next year as he’ll be playing for… Read more »

I really think that giving Lacazette would be another mistake, not only because of his age, but unless I’ve missed something, what has he really done this season? Yes he’s had some good games and he has worked hard, but surely a 30 year old striker has to do more than that?

Northbanker

Matt – totally agree. Laca should be sold. I really don’t think our continual rebuild programme should cost that much. Martinelli and Balogun (assuming he stays) should be earmarked to deputise for Auba at CF or LW (where Pepe, Willian (sigh) and maybe even Nelson can play. We should not prioritise a right sided CB – bring back Mavrapanos and Saliba and let them compete with RobHolding for that position. Sell Chambers. Let Luiz be retired off. We operate then with 5 CBs – 2 left and 3 right. A very decent balance. Sell Bellerin and buy Lamptey or Aarons… Read more »

bacaryisgod I do not think that Arsenal will choose to run down Lacazette’s contract this season and allow him to leave on a freebie. They will either sell him at end of season or extend his contract. How much they receive if he leaves is an entirely different matter. Arsenal seldom receive the level of transfer fee discussed in media or on Le Grove. This is in part due to inflated wages we pay our players. Northbanker I agree with most of your post. If Bellerin leaves and moves to clubs like Barcelona or PSG then his replacement would be a self financing job. We need to start like a train tomorrow. High energy, swarming all over them. Exploiting the fact that we’ll be more rested than they are. Burnley’s defence and cm are nothing special.
