Welcome Rúnar

by .

A very quick post from me today because I have just finished up a pitch and I have zero mental strength to give.

Arsenal signed Icelandic keeper, Rúnar Alex Rúnarsson from Dijon. He’s been given the number 13 which would indicate to me he’ll be the number two this season. I can’t say I’ve been thrilled by his numbers. I’m no expert, but conceding two a game with the second-lowest save percentage in the league doesn’t exactly reek of sauce… but, we’re living in a world where Mustafi was our most important defender this year. So we’ll see.

I’ve seen a few people saying that the keeping coach making these reccos is doing what Raul did with players. Big fat NO here. Our keeping coach is an actual expert. His rep is on the line with this signing, so you’d expect if he’s going big on this name, there’s something we don’t know about… or he just likes handsome blonde boys?

He’d better be good. No one likes to see their majestic ex save a penalty on his debut and keep a clean sheet. MISS YOU EMI.

Arsenal head to Leicester in our first cup game of the year. I’m surprised they kept the tournament going this season if I’m honest. Is the schedule not beastly enough? I have no idea how Mikel is going to treat it. Does he do a Jose and gun for it? Or does he treat it like Arsene would… give it to the kids to shine. I think we’d all love it if we went the junior route with a bit of experience. It’d be nice to see Balogun, even if he is going. Patino, Azeez, Saliba, Kido Taylor-Hart, Ozil… plenty of potential that could excite.

The main thing I’d like to come away with is a win, then ZERO injuries. It’d also be nice to see a performance after our clunky 90 against West Ham.

Dave Ornstein reaffirmed our intention to sign both Aouar and Partey. It feels a long way off right now, but these things can rapidly change as you know. He also confirmed what I’ve been telling you for a while, Reiss could be loaned (I was told sold).

A clunky old week. I am tired. Need to beer. See you tomorrow. xxx

Should have sold Leno and kept Martinez. Martinez is the more reliable keeper. Leno nearly cost us the game with his poor handling of the crosses against West Ham.

“I’m surprised they kept the tournament going this season”

That’s what I like about the FA. They take care of the lower league teams, who will share some TV money and also gain some experiences playing against better teams.

Saladin
Not happy we sold Emi as well. And we probably could’ve gotten more money for Leno. Runar on 40k a week for 4 years makes no sense. Karius would be a better and cheaper option… and I’m only half joking.

True. This might be an exaggeration but Martinez is the first keeper since Seamen who makes me feel comfortable. Somebody you can trust with your box. As great as Jens was, he had that madness about him where he could do something goofy out of the blue.

Jesus Christ this place is amazing. I’m a little embarrassed by how much I’ve laughed catching up with the comments I missed.

I knew Jamie was a World Citizen, the best are.

Apparently David Moyes,Issa Diop,David Cullen have caught Covid19 virus.

All football should be called off.

Regarding GK, we were raising cash to buy midfielders.

Rather than getting the best possible GK,club’s target probably was to get the best possible GK in the least amount of money.
So Probability of getting a good GK was always low.
They want to use the money from Martinez sale to fund Partey+Aouar.

salparadisenyc

Well Rúnar has as much experience as Chelsea’s new Ligue one addition, apparently thats enough for some on here. And we bagged him for a 20th the cost. Slam dunk Edu.

I do not see the maths of recruiting both Partey and Gabriel in this transfer window.

1. I don’t see Arsenal spending £95 Million on these 2 players. Even if we offload players we
are unlikely to generate more than £25-30 Million in transfer fees on current evidence.

2. Arsenal need to offload at least 5-6 players to meet current squad rules. I suspect that we
will be successful in offloading Sokratis, Kolasinac, Torreira but it is unclear who else will
go. Obviously both Guendouzi and Ozil are persona non grata but how do you offload
them?

Runar. can’t be on 40k weekly. That’s an easily spottable lie.

Don’t see us signing both but it could easily be true if Arteta joined us in assurances of spending next season. He got us European football which would have been his target when he joined. Lyon do want to sell but are trying to arm twist us into paying a lot of money considering current financial climate. Id personally be happier if we signed only Partey as I’m not convinced about 4-3-3. We need a completely dominant back 4 for that, and i don’t see that right now with Bellerin. Also Tierney is best suited to the LCB role. He… Read more »

Thanks for that link
We haven’t learned our lessons properly yet.
Dijon paid him £6000 weekly, if you believe the internet https://salarysport.com/football/ligue-1/dijon/

How do we ramp up his wages from 6k weekly to 40k weekly?
Aaagh,.. still question that 40k weekly. Even Saka is on 25k weekly.

Tom

Didn’t Saka get a new and improved contract?

Leedsgunner

I can guarantee if one of our rivals sold their no.2 keeper for £20m and bought his replacement for £1.5m, it would be hailed as good business.

Emi, regrettably has gone. We must move on. If we are serious about improving our midfield someone had to go… and yes I would have preferred if Elneny, Sokratis, Chambers and Holding went before Martinez but who said life was fair?

Plus has anyone seen how Villa treat their keepers? Martinez, I believe, is their 3rd keeper purchased in 5 years… to be honest… surprising that Emiliano chose them…

Leedsgunner

In other news, Cedric, is again injured. What an absolute pointless signing. A younger Lichtensteiner… and no… that is not meant as an compliment.

azed

The question is who thought it was a good decision to give Cedric and Mari 4 year contracts?

Johnno

Emi was excellent. But it was 13 games. Not a large sample. Plus – Leno being sold would require him agreeing to leave – which likely depends on who wanted him. Given he is number 1 at a club that is still in the top 15 -20 in Europe – and that most clubs outside England are broke – who is on his list ? PSG maybe Dortmund – maybe – but a pay cut Chelsea Man utd – maybe Inter – but a pay cut Can’t think of another that could afford the fee, the wages and needs a… Read more »

andy1886

Thirteen games isn’t a large sample but it’s more than you get to judge a player on at a World Cup for example where Everton’s James made his name and subsequent went for huge money (and anyone who tells you they knew all about him prior to that screamer is a liar).

Sid

Incase you havent noticed, Chelsea are in the CL and have made solid signings,
Arsenal are 8th with thomson and thompson in midfield.

Emiratesstroller

Arsenal need to make a decision shortly which of Partey and Aouar they will buy. Realistically they are not going to buy both in this window. The simple fact is that Arsenal are struggling to sell both Guendouzi and Torreira. None of the clubs willing to recruit either player is going to buy them. All the offers coming in are loans or loans with option to buy, which is frankly worthless apart from taking the players off the payroll. Of real concern is that we have got ourselves in a mess with both players plus Ozil, because the three know… Read more »

Yes we are treading treacle at the moment.

However, I am fairly confident that we will offload several unwanted players albeit probably
on loan or freebie basis. I don’t see us making any significant sales in this window apart from
Martinez.

Leftside

Wondering why the owners cannot pump some investment into this midfield. We are so excruciatingly slow in the transfer market I genuinely cannot wait until it is over.

Leftside

And in a window where we are struggling to offload players to further invest you can see why Martinez was sold. He gathered interest and wanted guarantee over playing time which nobody should demand. He also wanted to go because those assurances couldn’t be offered.

You can’t want these shiny new midfielders and then continually complain at the only decent ish money we have got from sales so far.

Hopefully there is some action and soon, can’t see it being before the Liverpool game.

I think Nelson loan is a win-win for both the player and the club. He doesn’t yet have the mentality to start for us but he certainly has lots if talent. It isn’t a coincidence that he was compared with Sancho in all his developing years and even rated higher than him. We have seen that in flashes in in the Australia pre-season where he outshone Malen, at Hoffenheim during his early season purple patch and at Arsenal too. I reckon the club find him a Championship club challenging for the top 6 where he will be a key player.… Read more »

Martinez was supposedly on half of that!!!

Never complained once, never rocked the boat.

True professional throughout his 10 year Arsenal tenure.
Seven loans, moving from pillar to post.
A magnificent example to all the other Arsenal trainees.

One, a monumental own goal in selling him.
Two ,in selling him for buttons.
Three, in replacing him with this flimsy looking thing.

Martinez should been an Arsenal 20 year stalwart..
Very sad.

It is interesting to note that all top six clubs in EPL are struggling to make sales of unwanted players in this transfer window. Arsenal are not alone in this pursuit. The only significant sale was Sane by Man City to Bayern Munich. The second largest sale is Martinez from Arsenal to Aston Villa. One suspects that most of the secondary clubs in EPL and clubs in Europe know that the top 6 need to offload some of their unwanted players to meet registration quota. They are hoping to recruit these players either on loans or swaps. Arsenal need to… Read more »

Big mistakes made with the keeper situation. Whichever way you look at it, the new guy looks distinctly average and that being kind. If we come to rely on him for any prolonged period this season and it costs us as many suspect it will, that decision will have to go down as one of the worst ever and for a club like Arsenal, that takes some doing! Also, another week gone and another week of no movement. I wish I shared the optimism of some who point out that ‘there are still 12 days left before the window closes’.… Read more »

Napoli are not going to pay a transfer fee for a 32 year old in final year of contract earning almost £100K pw. You need to look around the market at the calibre of players now on offer on freebies or bosmans who are considerably better than Sokratis. I’ve got to disagree with the people saying the Martinez transfer makes no sense. You may not agree with it, but you can see the logic behind it: – Midfield is the area shortest on quality – You need to raise cash to fix that priority – In goal, you have two good keepers. One’s contract doesn’t have long to go and he’s attracting solid cash bids. The other isn’t. – So sell to improve the midfield. You might be slightly weaker in goal, but that’s balanced by being much better further up the pitch. I’m sure if Leno was… Read more »

Tee Arsenal hoped to generate some transfers in this window apart from selling Martinez and that seems increasingly unlikely.
