Arsenal Women Gun For Glory

by .

One of the pleasures that comes with creating content about Arsenal is meeting people that are crazy talented and all they want to talk about is The Arsenal. Guest blogger Demian and I have been meeting for a few years, last time we hung out I watched him play percussion for the Jonas Brothers in Brooklyn. He warned me to bring earplugs, I was like, errr, been to Wembley mate, reckon I can handle this… oh my, was I wrong. I’ve never heard shrieks like it. He wears elite jackets and one of his major loves is the women’s game. He asked if I’d write about the game this weekend, instead, I threw it over to him. Enjoy the piece and give him a follow on @DemianArriaga.

Just like you, I LOVE ARSENAL.

But sometimes, I need a little reminder here and there.

I am a proud Venezuelan gooner who fell in love with Ian Wright watching him on old VHS tapes before I even had any idea what club he played for. That summer I saw Dennis Bergkamp score THAT goal against Argentina and when I saw on my Panini sticker book that he played for Arsenal, I just knew that was my team. Oh, that and the JVC logos which were the same from my stereo which became the single most important object in my life, as I later became a professional musician.

The post-Wenger era was just as difficult for me as during his latter years. I wasn’t really enjoying the matches, always expecting the worst and found myself tweeting more during the gameplay than watching the TV. Even still I would wake up at 4am here in Los Angeles if I had to. Game not on? I would listen to on the radio or try to find a feed. If not, I would open a live score app and refresh that sucker every 5 seconds.

However, the reality was that I was falling out of love with Arsenal. I didn’t feel like I was connecting with the players or with the Manager and style of play. There was so much fan division that even living in the USA, aka very far away from London, I was feeling alienated.

No. 10s that couldn’t hold a candle to Dennis and still no DMF since PV4 left. We all know that and to a degree I can come to terms with that because it’s on us. Nobody else. But beyond that, the absurd wages football wide, the racism, the corruption, the drama and all the things we love to hate, it was just becoming too much. Perhaps if Arsenal were doing great I might have conveniently exercised my selective amnesia but honestly my friends, I was just getting overwhelmed.

Then last summer it all changed. During the Women’s World Cup, a Dutch player made me fall in love with football and more importantly with ARSENAL FC, harder than ever before. The Notorious DVD aka Danielle Van De Donk. She instantly became my favorite player, let alone my favorite female one. Her poise, her control, her bite, her vision. She had it all. When the commentator mentioned she played for our club I felt like I had found something I was missing for who knows how long. I felt whole. Complete. It all made sense again. Later I came to find that the greatest and most prolific striker in the game was also our player. Then one of the Dutch’s most impactful subs who could start in any team, would be ours later that summer.

I was hooked. And I hadn’t even seen them play!!! I went online and started watching past matches, hearing interviews, and studying the history just like I had once done it 22 years ago. This is a team that has so much history, unlike any other in Europe and the current squad is very special.

Last season they were pure joy to watch and if it hadn’t been for COVID they could’ve won the WSL title. I wanted that, I yearned for that, and I had it all along. Right in front of me. I didn’t follow the when they won the CL or the league or countless FA cups… and I’m ashamed of that to be fair.

Not fully related but I recently tweeted out at TalkSPORT, mentioning how I wasn’t a Londoner but loved Arsenal since 98 and Goughie and Adrian basically called me a glory hunting fan, and even though I was bothered by it and thought it was harsh, I think they might have a point. Yes, I seek glory, don’t we all?

And that is the point… we have it. WE HAVE IT. And I’m not talking about 89 or the Invincibles. I’m talking about Arsenal Women.

We have the joy and privilege of witnessing some of the world’s best athletes right at our club. You want “one of our own” then look no further than Leah Williamson, a better defender than any at the men’s squad. A Dutch genius on the ball who can make time stop and also not be bullied? We got DVD. English, stylish with flair AND engine, a forward who can bend it like Becks? Beth Mead. Want a left-footed full back, that puts in glorious crosses and rough tackles, who tucks their shirt in? Katie McCabe. The deadliest, most fear inducing centre forward on planet earth? Miedema.

The list goes on and on and on.

We are truly privileged at Arsenal FC and supporting that badge to me means supporting all of it. Not just half.

I understand you may have apprehensions, or don’t think they have the quality that the men possess, etc and I’m not here to argue. I will say you will never ever see Jill Roord, Kim Little, Jordan Nobbs or Lia Walti not give anything less than 110%.  If you value commitment, pride, love for the crest and victory through harmony, all you have to look is at our Women’s squad.

They love each other and fight for each other and they are without a shadow of a doubt the most tight-knit AFC squad I’ve seen since the Invincibles.

So, although I’m not trying to convince you, give them a shot.

Saturday is massive, as they play their Champions League quarter-final tie against PSG and we must show up for them, online, virtually and in every which way possible.

Don’t we want to be the best fanbase we can? Not be compared to any others but just to feel good about how we treat our own?

I encourage you to watch the matches, follow the players, support them and buy they Merch. Not because they need it, but because it’s our team too. Also, because they are worth it.

They play outstanding football. They just do and more than anything, they LOVE our Arsenal.

And I love them.

Good luck to the team tomorrow!

Disagree backpass and Radio, really negative line up from Inter and they never looked like creating anything outside of set pieces and long balls up for Lukaku to run on to.

Eriksen and Candreva are both much more creative than anything Inter had to offer in midfield.

WengerEagle

Congrats to Sevilla, absolute juggernaut in the EL no matter who is the gaffer or the players at their disposal.

Inter did well to get this far. Nothing they’ve shown since the resumption of their league suggested them getting this far. Well done to Conte.

“Disagree backpass and Radio, really negative line up from Inter and they never looked like creating anything outside of set pieces and long balls up for Lukaku to run on to. Eriksen and Candreva are both much more creative than anything Inter had to offer in midfield”

Eriksen has been very poor for them regardless of whatever creativity he has in him and candreva has been Meh, always wrong cross, pass and so on, D’ambrosio has been performing well of late. Its pretty much his first/strongest eleven.

Radio Raheem

If Sevilla had a decent striker they would have challenged Real for La Liga. I expect them to reach the quarters as a minimum in the next champions league.

Champagne Charlie

Fancied Sevilla, said they were the more impressive team.

Inter were laboured and pretty average in terms of creativity, not surprising they never had anywhere near enough puff for Serie A – despite Dissenter being utterly convinced it was there’s of course 😂

PSG to take home the big prize for me, front three is delicious.

WengerEagle

‘Nothing they’ve shown since the resumption of their league suggested them getting this far.’

I mean they only lost 1 match out of 17 matches in all comps up until tonight since the restart.

But yeah, all things considered Conte did well in his first season at Inter with the personnel available, undoubtedly has had less to work with than Sarri at Juventus.

Radio Raheem

I’d bench Thiago for Kimmich tomorrow and play Pavard right back if playing 4231. It’ll make them more solid. If Thiago starts as one of a holding 2 I’ll make PSG favourites.

But hard for me to change now I put up Sevilla and Bayern to win both trophies months ago.

WengerEagle

They were crap tonight, thoroughly outplayed by Sevilla. Some of the blame has to fall at Conte’s door with creative players on the bench.

Was clearly not working well before he brought on the subs towards the end and straight away they created a couple of chances.

Champagne Charlie

Julien Lauren’s confirming we’re trying to get Aouar, that he’s free to leave and valued at circa 50 mil. Lyon inviting interest but we started the process ahead of others at this moment in time so that’s viewed favourably.

Think Juve are big fans, and City always a threat for a good midfielder, will be the most impressive deal if we manage it imo. Maybe we’ll appeal as a modest step up vs a jump to the very best.

Not the losers cup.

Many top teams would give an arm and a leg to win just one European trophy.

Always easier to create towards the end of matches.

I’d have been surprised if Conte didn’t start with the side he did not vice versa.

WE Conte definitely has to share the blame but I he wouldn’t be critcised in Italy for that line up because it is usually his go to line up. Eriksen has to improve next season and with hakimi coming, the likes of Candreva would be rooted to the bench. IMO, he needs to stop the 3ATB formation when he plays a high profile match in Europe, but we all know he is very stubborn. It would be hard for them to qualify into the round of 16, with this result they still remain in Pot 3 next season for the… Read more »

Yep true. Early in the season they played arguably the best football in Italy.

Radio

They were pretty much what we’ve seen all season, a very defensively sound and oriented side that play on the break and are a bit of a smash and grab outfit with Lukaku and Martinez winning them most of their games.

Lack any real top quality in midfield even though Barella and Brozovic are decent players. I’m not a great lover of the 3-5-2 system really although you can’t say that with the personnel at Conte’s disposal that it didn’t get the best results.

This more after the restart. They were a more rounded side earlier in the season.

WengerEagle

For me, Heynckes’ Bayern side of 2013 were better than this one, as good as it’s been. They absolutely blew away the competition on the way to winning the CL. Destroyed Conte’s Juventus and Barcelona over 4 combined QF/SF legs, winning each one by at least 2 goals. Ironically, we gave them the most trouble and the biggest scare that season, even managed to beat them in Munich in the 2nd leg of the last 16 with Gervinho even spurning a chance to dump them out on away goals near the end. What a story that would have been lol.… Read more »

Gabriel and his team have just been playing us to drum up interest. The deal would have been signed already if he was serious about playing for Arsenal. We all know that we will be starting the season with basically the same squad as we ended last season (with the addition of an ageing Willian). Why does this not surprise me? I hope we have a plan B, but I doubt it! Women’s football is quite big here in Australia. Radio Raheem has it right. We have no business belittling the UEFA/Europa League, we have won nowhere near enough continental competitions in our history. With a bit more luck we may have had more, but for more than one reason the Europa League should be one of our top priorities next season.

I have changed my mind about what Arsenal should do with Aubameyang. Providing that Arsenal can complete signing of Gabriel and buy two quality midfielders I would do NOTHING with Aubameyang this summer. I would hold him to his current contract and let him leave next summer on a Bosman if that is his preference. That would save us paying him an inflated wage or selling him this summer. The point is that Arsenal should focus now on strengthening our defence and midfield in the current transfer window and offloading unwanted players. Arsenal can concentrate next summer on buying a… Read more »

Emirates, I respect your posts, but this one makes no sense. With all the hoopla or Auba, saving us, getting us into EL, scoring a ton of goals on a shit team, and then the hype with him signing, to have his offer pulled would be disastrous. And you expect him to play 100% next year in his last year?? Auba is cheaper for us than getting into the market for a player of his production. Its been discussed quite a bit here. Our team will be built around him at least in the short term. Even Willian wants him… Read more »

Bojangles

I read last week that Lille stated that both Arsenal and Napoli bids had been accepted and they would not accept any further bids for Gabriel.

Bojangles

Reports are suggesting Auba has been offered £300,000 per week to stay at Arsenal.

Bojangles

Seems there will be a trial period allowing fans in grounds in October. About 20-30% of capacity. Also no away fans in attendance for the coming season.

Nelson

I don’t think Auba would stay for his final year. He would be another year older. I think he’ll either sign an extension with us or jump ship. Arsenal had a bad experience with Sanchez. They won’t repeat the same mistake if Auba wants to leave..

Guns of SF

300K i thought it was 250k with likely bonuses built in….
Anyhow, I do hope we sell sell sell…. with Ozil leaving we might be able to keep hi on that money. Its only when others want similar salaries do we run into issues

Guns of SF

Auba social media presence is basically saying, we are waiting but dont see the paper…. even wrighty alluded to sign da ting … whats the delay.

If arsenal pull the deal or not offer one, that would be a travesty.
Although I do think there is some gamesmanship happening here

Sid

Megan Rapinoe’s “twirl and slide”

Very indecent

Im telling you for free!

Habesha Gooner

Aubameyang has already signed his contract. I think the board didn’t want the heat of a 250k contract on the back of 55 redundancies. I think it will probably be announced soon.

Fabrizio saying we have increased our offer to gabriel. It might be the wages that has hold up the deal. He agreed on wages first and now the likes of Napoli have given him better and he wants us to match it. We need this to be over in the next few days and to concentrate on other targets.

Useroz

We have. Edu, Willian and Luiz here who have been /are involved with the Brazil national team. Also Martinelli who is an exciting talent. Also agreed fee with Lille according to the media. If we couldn’t close the Gabriel deal with these influences and under the circumstance, something is seriously wrong.

Useroz

For a reported fee of £22m rising to 27m, what would be Gabriel’s wage? £50k per week plus bonuses? This would be consistent with Torreira when he joined.

I hope Lille wouldn’t be playing games behind the scene with the Pepe deal sort of under some scrutiny.

Terraloon

Useroz

He ain’t coming for £50k a week.

If the fee is north of £20 million as a minimum his wage is going to be £70k a week. After tax that would be around £35 k nett.

If he were offered £70k in Italy with their tax regime he would be taking home over £ £50k. Push that up to £60k gross and he is massively better off in Italy on lower wages.

moray

We have a decent Brazilian contingent as well as a Spanish coach. these things often count for a lot.

Also, I hear Maghalaes is a big fan of Stewart Houston and Pat Rice.

moray

This is looking like one of the most exciting summers we’ve had for a long time. Ironic, really, considering the context.

We have some great ins early doors. We are already smelling interest in some of our outs and Tets has made clear who he wants gone, for avoidance of doubt.

With some good deals we might even be afford to push the boat out for a real marquee signing like Aouar, Partey, Dembele or such like.

Arteta won the FA Cup this summer and that was a result which was unexpected and proved that he is an excellent coach. Wenger was also an excellent coach in the first eight years of his management at the club winning both Premier League and FA Cups. I don’t see the FA Cup as “utter filth”, never have.

The thing is, when the FA Cup was seen as our ultimate goal each and every season, it becomes boring and sort of predictable, just as the reign of Wenger panned out.

This year was special because Arteta showed he actually knew what he was doing. Already he has shown that tactically he can take Wenger to the cleaners.

He has given us HOPE, something that eroded away under Wenger.

What’s to stop Arsenal doing the same with Ozil if, as been reported, he is not wanted by the club.

Pierre Of course “playing open expansive football” is a tactic but there is a time and place for it, wouldn’t you agree. This cult mentality is insane. Ozil is a huge burden. And he won’t be playing even a single minute for us next season. Arteta froze him out because he returned from the COVID lockdown unfit. He isn’t moving because no team will touch him with a ten foot pole. That’s why he would rather take his 350k a week and never mind playing. 18 mil a year is the wages of at least 5 good young players. How is that not a fucking burden.
