WE LOVE YOU FREDDIE

via @Arsenal Instagram

The man might not have red hair in 2019, but damn, I love him as much as when he did. The classy Swede delivered a fantastic win against West Ham. The first time we’ve come back from a half-time losing position in 8 years. It wasn’t perfect, but it showed that the players respect the manager and it showed that contrary to popular opinion, we have good players.

Freddie shook up his starting 11 with some big decisions. Martinelli started, Luiz saw the bench, Pepe played out wide right, Torreira started again. The changes had nearly zero effect on the first-half performance. I was so bad, it Gooners calling helplines up and down the country. Truly awful. No confidence, mistakes all over the pitch, and a real lack of ‘give a fuck’ from key senior players. We even had the cheek to go a goal down after Xhaka failed to put his head on the line.

Second half was a different gravy. Arsenal came to play. Mesut Ozil set Kola off on the overlap, the Bosnian slipped a clever low ball into Martinelli, the Brazilian made up the yardage and made no mistake with a clean finish on his Premier League debut. Dedicated to Big Unai, king of the overlap, RIP.

Arsenal kicked into gear, the passing improved, West Ham were put on the backfoot. The second goal didn’t take long, Auba linked up nicely with Pepe, back heeling into his path, the Ivorian was given all the time in the world to cut inside and unleash 3 months of fury on a fizzing top corner shot. Arjen Pepe, amirite?

The third goal came courtesy of Pepe returning the favour, he dinked a lovely chip to Auba who fashioned a volley that clunked over their keeper. Has Auba move on from Lacazette, has he found a new younger bro? Maybe… maybe.

Freddie chalked 3 away points and cleared West Ham’s stadium by 80minutes. Perfect.

Now, it’s clear there were still a lot of problems. We created next to nothing despite dominating possession, we still had to rely on some good keeping, there were some bad senior performances, but look… we won, the players looked like they cared, no one crashed Freddie.

Think about how hard the Swede has had it. He took over from a manager that couldn’t speak English, didn’t have a vision for the football, and had tried and failed to kill senior players. Emery exited with 9 backroom staff, Freddie’s only hire has been Per Mertesacker. He’s propping up the whole thing and he’s doing it with a serious amount of class.

I love how he speaks in the press. There’s no ego there, he puts all the credit with the players. He’s calm, almost Wenger like. His eloquent prose is like waterfall yoga music with noise-cancelling headphones on a plane for of children. He has sauce, that’s for sure.

Whatever happens, when the club do hire a new manager, I hope they don’t forget what Freddie brought to a very messy situation. I am hugely impressed.

The real shame? He has to play City next, then embark on a horrible run.

That said, it’s important to counter some of the misery when it comes to our squad. It’s way better than people are making out. We have people that can score, our front three is electric, we have one of the best French kids in the world, we were 2 points off 3rd last year. There’s plenty to work with for a new coach.

Hopefully, Freddie can hand over a squad that’s found a bit of swagger. We’ll see. Europa first, then a massive game at the weekend.

Right, see you in the comments BUT LISTEN TO THE PODCAST. x

Xakha did give away some sloppy passes but also made some very good ones going forward At the end of the day we don’t have much choice right now. This is pretty much our best team and we have to start like this for as many league games as possible. We need to treat the Europa like it’s a reserve competition and keep our best players fresh for the league. Maybe a season out of Europe would be better for us. It would keep our squad fresh and allow… Read more »

We are playing City, Chelsea and United in our next 5.

If we manage to escape with 2 draws and 3 wins I think we may turn it around.

Massive massive next 30 days for us.

Surely Pedro you were drunk oe high when watching the match weren’t you.
It was Torreira who set Kolasinac free on the overlap.
The backheel from Auba you are talking about in the builp to the second goal was the one that occurred in the build up for the 3rd goal. It was a normal sidefooted pass from Auba to Pepe for the second.
Come on Pedro.

An excitable and effervescent post by our PedRo today and I off course give him thanks. But let’s not beat around The Bush here. The game was garbage. Both teams were garbage. Soccer nowadays with VAR is garbage . Mike Dean ( nearly 65 now) is garbage. 7 mins of injury time every match is garbage Pepe for £72 000 000 is stil garbage. Soccer on Monday evening is garbage. Apart from those truths. Martinelli played well and continued his incredible goalscoring streak. Leno ,likewise. And well done Fred – who deserved a break and got it when the Hammers… Read more »

A modest performance against a shit poor West Ham? We are a hiccup away from major problems. Only good thing that worked was playing The Toreador In that stable holding position against a West Ham team with Just one viable forward it worked. Against better sides with more options we will get muelered. . I admire Torrierra he plays with a cutting edge but his passing is sometimes poor and he lacks the power needed other players should note his aggression though the number of times we lost easy tackles was embarrassing. A much needed win but the clouds are… Read more »

I think LT deserves a mention, thought he was back to last years form last night.

Matt

Freddie deserves credit for the team selection and that’s where the praise ends. Did you watch the match? That was the worst Arsenal performance I can remember. The turnaround was all on young Martinelli having the cojones to score. Yes the last 30 minutes were highly enjoyable but the coach didn’t win that match. Freddie’s a nice guy we all wish well but he isn’t a great manager yet.

Leedsgunner

It’s one result. I hope we don’t crash down to earth next Sunday.

Spanishdave

Our problems stem from the ridiculous playing around passing by the back four.
Leno is poor at making decisions to release the ball quickly to get an attack going.
As Rafa said the midfield and defence do not close the gap when we attack and drop back to play this awful sideways passing.
Xhaka is very poor constantly giving the ball away and easy dispossessed.
Our movement is very slow generally causing this problem.

Bergkamp63

If we play like the first hour on Sunday, we will be 4 or 5 down by that time.

Truly shocking.

Survival is now the new trophy.

HighburyLegend

The same kind of first half against City…. you know what I mean.

Does Freddie will have the balls to let Granité – aka The Coward Disaster – on the bench ??
Unfortunately I don’t think so.

Graham62

Ok, admit it, wasn’t it great to see Freddie walk out onto the pitch after the game to hug every single Arsenal player. The hug with Pepe was just wonderful. It was like “Thanks Dad, I love you”. It was not Klopp-like but it was classy from Freddie. Those of you who doubted his manmanagement skills saw why Freddie is so liked by the players. Have we ever had a manager that did that? Not in my lifetime. Emery couldn’t do it. Wenger never did it( except after we’d won something. I’m not expecting Freddie to run out and jump… Read more »

As lovely as the win is, the reason why our first half was shambolic was coz we didn’t have a standing CM to progress and connect the attack…. No team.operates without a CM…. The reason was coz we were using two DM… None was breaking up play and putting ball in the final third… It got to a point LT had to start acting as the CM… That kinda pattern using two DM only works when the opposition doesn’t come out against us… West ham came out against us in first half that’s why we couldn’t piece anything together… Fortunately… Read more »

Pass of the match goes to Xhaka, a blind pass across your own penalty area which any other team would have buried..

Outstanding.

Xhaka & Ozil shouldn’t be allowed to kick another ball for Arsenal, they need de-listing.

InsideRight

There were some positive signs but let’s not get carried away. This was West Ham. They’ve had one win in 9 games before last night. They are soft. For most of the game we were dire. Passing it around the back line, advancing a little then passing it backwards, and Xhaka going for a new record in the number of passes given away. It was notable that after the first goal we actually started playing forward passes and players were turning and looking to go upfield instead of laying the ball off. The team is too static in possession. It… Read more »

“That said, it’s important to counter some of the misery when it comes to our squad. It’s way better than people are making out” It’s really not though. We have some promising youths with potential and hopefully the new signings can settle soon but nearly all our senior players are sub par, lacking athleticism, pace, power, skill and determination. We created very little yesterday and scored with every shot on target, very well taken goals but hardly a recipe for sustained success. The club need to move on just a bit further from Wenger’s last few years at the club rather than citing it would be better if he was still around. It’s not for no reason that so many cite Xhaka and Ozil as weak link players and these are Wenger players. One weak link player was dropped last night in David Luiz who is a new addition to the weak players. It needs these sort of players to be gradually removed from the first team to see the club really move on. Welcomed and much needed win last night but… Read more »

“Xhaka doesn’t move with the ball”

Freddie
Well put
I watched Xhaka last night on and off the ball.
He is a crap player, with no brains for football. Often there are players in wide spaces waiting for a pass and he is absolutely blind to them. Then he tries to make the difficult pass poorly.
He gets tackled easily. and wandered about with no purpose.
If Freddie can’t see this then he is just as bad.

Guns of Hackney

Let’s be honest, that was two teams who could easily be fighting for relegation. The first 45 was as bad as anything seen in a long time but when you have £200m attackers, one would like to think they could get you out of trouble…and they did. I know the clamour will be for FL to stay but seriously…no. The fact it took another 45 mins and another goal down to fire these clowns up was damning. Against a Good team we’re already 3-0 down and the game is gone. Also, Pepe was fucking dire. Great goal but man alive… Read more »

Ishola70

Don

We have been through this many times before.

Wenger teams were regressing in his last years.

A new coach is brought in with a few new faces and this regression under Wenger is halted for a period with new and existing players that were previously under Wenger responding to a new coach for a period. This responding though wore out towards the end of the season and followed on onto next season.

The club need to move a bit further on from Wenger to start really going places as much as this may pain you.

“With players that have some bottle.”

How anyone can be comfortable with a player that shuts his eyes and turns his back on a player that leads to the opposition scoring beats me.

UTarse

We were fucking abysmal, only saviour was that West Ham were and are in a worse place.

Again, if we secure 10th place by May, I will be relieved. We have to shift a lot of these so called senior players out, they don’t give a fuck for this club nor its fans.

It was brave and good to see.

I just hope there is the convinction going forward to carry on leaving him out.

Pedro A much needed win and I’m happy for Freddy. Pepe is genuinely talented and potentially still a great buy. However, unless we now go on a significant run and teams above us such as spurs, chelsea and man utd all start dropping points, we are not going to make top four. Pedro I think the squads biggest problem is the midfield The attack has so much talent but struggles because the midfield is not creative and also can’t control a game to let the attackers make runs ahead of play etc Meanwhile if you can’t protect the defense with a well organized midfield then the defense will always be exposed and struggle We don’t have a top level defense but at least if they are well drilled and have protection from midfield then the goals conceded and shots conceded will drop off significantly We should be well organized and set up… Read more »

Our forward line should be able to match it with anyone. Our midfield is fucking shithouse, and the defence is no better. “His bravest move was to drop David Luiz who had been a regular in the proper first team matches since he has arrived at Arsenal.”

The interesting thing about Luiz was that when Bellerin pulled up injured during the warm up it would have been easy to move Chambers into RB and slot Luiz into CB.

Maybe Ljungberg’s patience are running out with a few players – hope to God Xhaka’s next.

Davey

Don’t know how we are going to get beaten badly Sunday and the following games into Jan, Luiz Ozil and Grant Hacker need to be kept away from the 1st team. Thought Chambers was ok but my god Sok does not enjoy playing as the left C/H.

Bojangles

Pedro

In your blog cast you stated that Emery never had a clear vision of the type of player he should have been signing. You got that wrong mate, he identified the players he wanted but not only was he not given them but was given players in different positions to those he wanted.

Marko

Right so if Freddie was brave last night for the first time getting the team selection then wasn’t he stupid for getting it wrong the previous two times? Isn’t he dumb as hell in continuing to give Xhaka and Özil 90 mins games when they’re having very little effect?

Marko

Also it seems the about face turn of Raul is soon to take place. Reportedly Arteta is the most likely for the job. Massive puff piece incoming on why Raul is the Don again.

Pierre

Marko
“and Özil 90 mins games when they’re having very little effect?”

Maybe you should listen to the balanced and perceptive analysis of Tim Sherwood who seemed to think that Ozil made the difference.

As I rightly pointed out last night.

Ishola70

Marc
”The interesting thing about Luiz was that when Bellerin pulled up injured during the warm up it would have been easy to move Chambers into RB and slot Luiz into CB.”

That’s a good point.

Looks very damning on Luiz.

Well let’s hope it is.

Mind you Chambers was quite poor in his last RB appearance at Norwich.

Spanishdave

How are we going to solve our right back problem?
AMN is poor and constantly passes the ball back to the guy who gives it to him.
He is way below standard.

Shaun

Agree GOH , that said Pepe was head and shoulders above the rest of those Mofo’s that’s how bad we are at the moment and I am sorry but I can not support Freddie if he keeps playing Xhaka , any coach who persist’s with him needs to be stripped of there coaching badges

Davey

AMN looks like the son of snoop dog and looks and plays like he is stoned!

Marko

Tim Sherwood? That genius? Nah I’ll trust my eyes thank you he did next to nothing for 60 mins and then passed the buck on to others for the last 30. It was Martinelli who despite doing okay (your words) was the difference maker. That one moment from him changed the game. Ozil hasn’t had a moment like that in seasons.

Shaun

Not sure if others can see it but it’s almost like Xhaka is suing to himself. I am not putting myself on the line for this club as I no they don’t appreciate or rate me , why the fuck should I put my head on the line , incredible really really incredible to think arsenal have to persist in playing this guy

Marc

Pierre

Wow mate talk about hitting rock bottom. Using Timmy “tactics” Sherwood to defend Ozil fuck me just how desperate are you?

If you think about it it’s not really a surprise that you’re clutching at straws, you used to quote the assists he got, then it turned to chances created and you can’t even fall back on that one now. I’m waiting for the heat map so you can declare “but he runs round and stuff”.

Aussie Gooner

I would like to know why we have no defensive youngsters coming thorough the system. Other than the enigma that is Mavropanos we only have Bola, who at 20 has seen no first team action. What kind of planning is this? We are very vulnerable at the back even when Bellerin and Tierney are fit! What is a good team going to do to us when we have a midfield with Xhaka and Ozil contributing jack shit to the defensive set up (and very little to the offensive either!)?

Pierre

The injuries to Bellerin and Tierney were a blessing in disguise. Kolasinac and AMN at this present time are better options in the full back positions. Pepe, despite losing possession of the ball too often, has to be a starter as he gives our attack something different and is prepared to take risks. Martinelli should be in for his goal scoring prowess. Pepe and Martinelli will be goal scoring and assists machines . Freddie needs to work on the passing between the lines to Ozil who will then feed the front 3 as he did in the 2nd half last… Read more »

We should celebrate any win. But make no mistake, this was a pretty poor performance against a truly awful West Ham side – apart from a 10 minute spell. Don’t let the win obscure the truth – we are a very bad side. We coud have been 4 down by half-time against a decent side with proper finishers. Marc he’s not the only one. During commentary in the first half Alan Smith talked about Ozil being key as he kept finding space. Great post Pedro – One aspect we may have ignored in this manager search is the amount of respect and adulation Freddie has with the current squad. The on field scenes after the match were very Pep/City like and it was great to see. The 1st half was a shitshow and it showed how bad the midfield is at the moment. The question isn’t whether Ozil is good enough to play for Arsenal or AN Other FC, but whether he is at present the least worst of a bad Arsenal midfield bunch.

Ok so He wasn’t very good yesterday, but would Willock have been better? I like Willock but he’s been ineffective under Freddie. Or would you play (shudder) Guendouzi as the most advanced midfielder?

Ozil looks like he’s off the pace for whatever reason, I don’t know if its attitude or confidence but form that had him Germany’s best player season after season has 100% gone. Really sad to see.

As 71Guns said the days he had influence over a whole game are over but if he works hard(which he did last night) and still has an eye for a pass we need to play him and get some value out of those wages.

Fortunate to miss the first half last night as I got back home at half time. Hadn’t realised at the time what brilliant timing that was!

Still concerned with this slow ball from the back – Freddie really needs to eliminate that from them

Either launch it and accept 50-50 but push the danger to the opponent a or play quick ball from the back with aim of 2 – 3 passes max to move into an offensive position
. No other option should be entertained

Graham62

To be honest AMN looked far more focused last night, even though he did play a few too many backward passes for my liking.

AMN gets dropped, we go on our worst run of games for over 40 years. We win as soon as he is restored…. Like I said thick.
