Xhaka out, who would you replace him with?

by .

It’s always amusing when an Arsenal enigma player falls out with the club. The super fans that revel in the vaguery of the talent; leaning on disconnected stats to prove a point, desperately hope a Barca or a Madrid will come to the rescue are always disappointed.

Granit Xhaka? Try Big Steve Bruce’s Toon Army. I love that. Granit and Jonjo Shelvey keeping them up. What a pairing. I absolutely need to see this.

Quite incredible that in the space of a month, we’ve gone from Captain Xhaka to a pretty nailed on exit from the club. I liked the comments he made in his dethroning interview where he’d basically been hanging out with his over-woke Stoke Newington friends who’ve been telling him that it’s ok for men to show their feelings… anyone that can reflect on the Palace incident with the fans and be happy with the response needs their matcha tea confiscated.

… but look, that’s what coffee culture can do to you in London. One minute you’re one of the lads, crashing back Stella’s in the park, jumpers for goal posts on a Sunday, the next thing you know, you’ve met Oatmilk Sally, you’re wearing washed-out khaki three quarter lengths, you have your velcro wallet secured to your belt with a carabiner, and you’re in a group therapy for dogs with social anxiety.

I think it’d be quite interesting to see if Ivan Gazidis and AC Milan come to his rescue. I love that Ivan is having an absolute disaster over there again. I was a little worried he might learn from the mistakes he made at Arsenal and double down on repairing his reputation in Europe. It’s a disaster over there, 14th in the league, internal politics galore, hopefully, we can add to the mess by handing him a player that’d be well off the pace in any league. Would love Xhaka to feel the wrath of Italian fans after he’s gifted a third goal to Inter Milan in the derby.

I jumped on a podcast with Matt Scott yesterday, one of the points he raised was the lack of a powerful defensive midfielder at Arsenal. Our Ndidi has been Xhaka. No power, mobility or discipline. With his impending departure, that leaves the club a space free in the squad. It would be absolutely ideal to replace him with someone a little more suited to the league. I don’t think LT is a cultural fit and I think he lacks presence to survive the league. I’m a little stumped as to where we go with a destroyer in the middle of the park?

Maybe that’s the game we play in the comments today. Who would you hire?

Only way you can play is to listen to the podcast.

… and give it a 5* rating.

Maybe a nice comment too.

Can you give me some money as well?

Ok, 5*will be fine. x

Ishola Your still trying to preach to the converted. I know what the way forward is . I said from day one that we have employed a manager who has a certain philosophy without the players to implement that philosophy …it was dòmed to fail. We had a squad ( and still do) that isn’t built for pressing and intensity. Over the last 18 months we have brought in players such as Pepe, Ceballos, Suarez, Torreira, Guendouzi, Luiz, lichsteiner. Which of these players are built for pressing and intensity … I would say Martinelli is the only new player who… Read more »

With the rumours that Xhaka is leaving (thank goodness) and potentially Torriera we might see some movement in the transfer market.

This midfield, regardless of who the manager is, is crying out for a powerful and athletic CDM.

Ishola70

Pierre If this is the case you are giving out then yes Arsenal are doomed. What you don’t do is to give up trying to progress onto more modern methods of football and just revert to the old soft Arsenal who are poor off the ball. This seems to be your reasoning. We have too many players who aren’t good off the ball so we may as well cater to them. No this is not the way because Arsenal will never improve on the modern football stage to any degree with this reasoning. It has to be a process where… Read more »

Unai

Pierre,

Guen, Torriera & Pepe are all capable of playing a pressing game, as are Laca & Auba.

The problem with our pressing game isn’t the player, it’s the disjointed way its applied, its poorly implemented.

Ozil is not suited to the prem, honestly, could you see him fitting into any system the other top prem team play because I cant and as much as I love Santi, I’d say the same for him too.

Ironically I’d take a fit Ramsey with the right coaching over both Ozil & Santi.

Unai

Ishola, the right coach would be a start.

Ishola70

Unai
“the right coach would be a start.”

I haven’t said anything different.

It’s been said that a coach that has more about him than Emery would also be required.

Unai

Sorry… I was agreeing with you 👍

Graham62

Every single Arsenal player is capable of adapting to whatever style of play the manager wants. Emery’s style is shite. We all see this and,in fact, even the players see it. However, in the greater scheme of things blaming Emery for everything is ludicrous. That’s his way, his beliefs, his methods, just as Wenger’s philosophies and mindset brought his downfall, the same will happen with Emery. Key though, in all of this, is that Emery has been with the club a minuscule amount of time in comparison to Wenger and, significantly, he has not been involved in tearing the club… Read more »

Ishola
“It’s going to be a lengthy process.”

It will be if we continue to bring in players who don’t adhere to the manager’s philosophy..

We hired a manager who had completely the wrong players for his style of football and then to compound that error, we recruit players that are not suited to the playing style .

This ,of course ,is not a defence of Emery, as he is a disaster for the club and unless we part with his services asap then the damage will have a long and lasting effect

Unai

Graham, I think we have 3 players who would struggle to adapt to different systems.

Ozil, Xhaka & Sok are all specialists/limited.

Ozil is not fit for the prem.
Xhaka needs a specific system to flourish.
Sok is just a brawler.

The rest I think have enough variety in skill sets that they could adapt to most systems.

Pierre

Unai
“Ironically I’d take a fit Ramsey with the right coaching over both Ozil & Santi.”

Why doesn’t that surprise me.

Unai

Not sure what your trying to say?

That I don’t appreciate lightweight but easy on the eyes players?

I’m ok with that as, looking at the teams around us, neither do the managers of our competitors.

Question for you, does ozil get into any of the other top teams (without system changes)?

Would the managers of the teams around us, come to Arsenal and create a system to accommodate Ozil?

I’d say no to both but would be interested to hear your take.

Pierre

Unai
A player reaches 50 assists in record time and he is not fit for the premier league ….makes sense..

I wouldn’t judge any player under Emery , his treatment and misuse of ozil is clear for all to see.

And by the way , Cazorla isnt a lightweight player.

He and Ozil had a superb partnership , which considering how lightweight ( in your opinion) they were, is quite remarkable, and yes ,give me those 2 all day long.

This is the role of Director of Football operations.
Strange coincidence this is the title of Raul. Director of Football operations

This is fucking rich coming from you talking about roles and then attributing poor signings not to the head of recruitment but to the guy you admittingly don’t like. I don’t know why I bother with you you’re a clear lying weasel

Moray

CA, spot on. I just hope we can find what we need in the January transfer window.

Marko

Back on Özil? Last two games he contributed next to nothing but did well against Liverpool’s under 15’s. Still isn’t doing enough to warrant all the debate that occasionally pops up about him.

Distant legrover

Pierre

There was a season, I think 2015 when Ozil and Cazorla were first and second in key passes in the league for a few months. Ozil was also the runaway assist king that season. Really enjoyed watching both together in that period. Until mister Cazorla got injured and we reverted to type.

Re: Pressing, (hahahaha) You might be able to play this ‘pressing soccer’- whatever that is- anywhere in the world. but cant play it over in England. Too many games/too many fixtures/too intense. Eg: 5 games in 12 days over Xmas! Are we gonna press in all these games? (And why would you want players running around needlessly like demented banshees?) “Conserving energy so you are ready to poach the last minute smash and grab winner/ victory- is surely more a common sense tactic.”

Common sense is in short supply from the know nothing’s on le Grove .

As each passing week goes by , Ozil’s remark of ” you are not a coach” is looking more and more perceptive.

Unai
Ozil has proved that he can play in any level of football , the higher level he plays and with the the higher level of player he plays with , the better Ozil becomes.

Ask Ronaldo .

Unai

Lol, he was booted out of Madrid and has pretty much failed at Arsenal….. what has he proved.

Still waiting for your answer.

If hes good enough for the top of the prem, make a case for it!

CG

Pierre

The whippersnappers and the phoney progressives around here- think soccer is all about these new fads ( pressing/transitions/systems , etc)

It aint.
Even tactics are an obsolete abstract in 2019 ( game is too fast for tactics)

Football is a simple game- invariably played by simpletons.
the more simple you keep it- the better performances you will extract.

Eg
Wengers Arsenal 49 games unbeaten
Klopps Liverpool 1 defeat in 50?

Football aint rocket science.
So Teck Decks should be employed for NASA- not for kicking a ball about.

Always remember:

Keep it simple.Its only football.

I mean this is what happens during the international break you have pointless conversations about just plain crap with dumb idiots for the umpteenth time. Case in point Pierre Ozil and sure you might as well throw in CG with his Madrid don’t press and they win European trophies. They also don’t win leagues anymore. Barcelona perfected the art of the press during their most successful period, Bayern too under Heynckes, City too the last few years and not currently you have Liverpool whose front 3 are arguably the best at the forward press in Europe.

Marko

At the end of the day when Sven was in charge of recruitment we signed our fair share of older players and bad signings. When Raul was in charge it wasn’t perfect but he signed Saliba, Pepe, Tierney and Martinelli all young and likely to be fantastic signings for the club. Facts are facts

Heavy links to Demiral again today, would prefer Upamecano tbh but since we also desperately need at least 1 CM in January (2 if Torreira leaves) it probably makes sense to go for the cheaper option.

Don’t know much about him but he looks better than what we have and is only 21. Got all the physical attributes to succeed in the PL, tall, fast, strong, bit nasty. Doesn’t look very cultured on the ball but could compliment Saliba well.

Nice shot of Wenger with his arm around Elneny signing the contract. He was gone when Xhaka signed though but Sven and Ivan were here.

Christ it’s literally everything you say

Unai

I know the club publicly backed Emery but they must be pissed in private, our back of house has come a long way in 2 years yet Emerys properly dropped the ball on the playing side.

I would be astounded if were not working on a contingency right now.

Marko

Freddie I imagine given he’s barely played this season Demirel might be a loan. I still think we’re aiming for Upamecano possibly in the summer. On Sven’s recommendation 😉

Marc

Valentin

I know this is going to be difficult for you to take on board but Marc and Marko are different names.

You don’t seem to be able to differentiate between the 2.

Marc

Unai

I don’t understand giving Emery more games however none of us are privy to what’s going on behind the scenes. It’s also impossible to watch Arsenal at the moment and think that there isn’t a problem.

You’ve got to assume that something’s going on behind the scenes – it’s not as if we’ve got the same people running the club on a day to day basis that we had for so many years.

James wood

I think I might to think homegrown.
If Torreira is off and to be honest he has not
really impressed.
I would look at The Brook boy at Bornemouth.
Maddison is above out ceiling ( Why)
Perhaps a couple of players like Brook might be the answer.?

Unai

Marc, agreed, 3 scenarios I can think of;

They know there are issues and are working on the correct next step – most likely

They want to change but Stan/Josh are resisting – possibly

They are utterly useless and moronic and cant see we are sinking – cant see it personally.

Marc

Unai

Agree with your 3 basic scenarios. The idea that the Kroenke’s are resisting a change doesn’t make sense though. Wenger had a lot of goodwill with them and the moment it became clear he’d missed out on CL football for a 2nd season he was gone. Emery has no good will why wait until the situation is irretrievable?

Unai

If I’m trying to be balanced I think the most likely scenario is we want a better Emery replacement than we can currently attract.

People talk of Jose but let’s be honest, even if we wanted him, would he really come?

As you said, we cant see behind the scenes but it might be that sticking with Emery till the season closes is the only sensible option.

I want Emery gone but would we be able to get our first choice now and if not, who comes in for 6 months?

Marc

Unai

That’s the issue – Ljungberg? He’s a legend and we all love him but that doesn’t mean he’d be suitable.

Mourinho wouldn’t do 6 months on principle. I can’t think of any temporary manager options that are a reasonable idea.

Spanishdave

There is the official story and there is the true story. Officially Wenger was not sacked, but left with mutual consent. Yet for all intend and purpose he was sacked. Once Wilshere let the cat out of the bag, a hastily written statement was released to announce that Wenger was leaving at the end of the season. His last season he was lame duck, kept out of all major decisions that could have any long term impact on Arsenal. For example when Mavrapanos was signed, Wenger had no idea who he was. Wenger hd already been sacked when both Xhaka and Elneny signed new contracts.

You said it not me. Hey by all means slitter around and try to make the stuff you say sound like sense it’s comical to watch.

Wenger was sacked when Elneny signed his new contract.

Picture of Wenger and Elneny signing his new contract.

Val tries to then turn it into being there but being powerless. Which doesn’t really address the original lie which was Wenger was “sacked when both Xhaka and Elneny signed new deals”.

Cesc Appeal

Increasing rumours we’re going to seriously try for Demiral.

The prospect of a Saliba, Demiral CB pairing for the next 10 years is great…but at the same time the club has to recognise that adding good CBs is not going to cure the problem under Emery…and potentially under a new manager as well with this midfield though a new manager could do a lot better in terms of selection and tactics in there.

Unai

Iwobi, Bielik, Ospina, Kos, Jenks….

Val, your having a mare son.

Spanishdave

Thanks Marko there’s been little about it in the news.
A lot more players seem to get this injury, probably the boots are so lightweight now.

Marko

CA before Ishola denigrates the potential signing lemme just say I’m all for it. A highly rated 18 year old and a highly rated 21 year old signed to the defence inside 6-8 months I’m absolutely game. Worry being it means that Upamecano isn’t a target anymore I’m not so sure about that considering long term Luiz and Sokratis aren’t going to be here and it’s very possible that Chambers and Holding might not be either.

Marko

It’s pretty clear what he means you dense cunt.

It sure is

“Wenger hd already been sacked when both Xhaka and Elneny signed new contracts.”

Cesc Appeal

Marko

It depends for me.

If Upamecano is being valued at £60 Million or more and they won’t shift and we can get Demiral for £30 Million or less and then spend the rest we would have spent on Upamecao on a CDM then I’m all for it.

Obviously things don’t always work out like you would want but the prospect at this point in time of Saliba and Demiral as Arsenal’s CB foundation is certainly interesting. Two big, powerful, athletic, mobile CBs.

Saliba as well is great on the ball and looks like a natural leader already at 18.

Marko

Dave Rooney infamously broke his metatarsal on a clean tackle and nearly missed a major tournament. Just a fluke injury it can happen

Marko

CA I’ve visions of a back three next season. Saliba almost has to play next season with clubs circling and his development demanding it and I’m not sure if he’ll be totally trusted straight away in a back 4. I still like the moves though going for established CB’s hasn’t worked for us recently so why not try something else

The other issue is the rule about not showing 3pm Saturday kick-off’s live, the current system allows for fixtures to be moved to fit the TV schedule.

Yes Marko What you haven’t noticed is that there is no ragging from me as you call it on the Saliba signing. This is because he looks to have all the tools plus the temperament and even maturity shown at such a young age. He looks a very good signing. Demiral is a different matter. Someone on here described him as “nasty” lol. His “highlights” reels are full of him diving in and going to ground even when there is no need to occasions. It’s very reminiscent of the Mustafi “highlights” when he was at Valencia. The other recent link… Read more »

Marc,

It is strange that I am always misunderstood by the same people. The very same people who seems to have problem understanding simple concept like timeline, coaching, recruitment, notice period, bad management.
Seems that same people are trying very hard at picking at (as you say) minor nuances in my English to score points rather than than looking at the overall points.
There is a say: when the wise man points to the moon, the fools stare at the finger.

Yeah to be fair it would tip the scale even more in the favour of the big boys that would, just seems crazy with Sky buying up all the competition that they basically have football fans at their mercy and can charge whatever they like.

Always wondered that, why aren’t Saturday 3pm ko televised?

Who cares if Demiral isn’t up to snuff, there’s an absolute plethora of talented CB prospects going around at the moment, RB Leipzig have two alone.

CM is much more concerning than CB for me, we really need to get the area and start from scratch.

At least at the back Saliba, Tierney and Holding is something to build on.

*really need to nuke the area

You say stupid things and get offended when you are called out on them. You have the temperament of a teenage girl when following football is all about banter – a self of humour also seems to be something you have a chronic lack of.

Even when I offered you an olive branch there you threw it back at me.

That says a lot more about you than it does me.
