Alex Songification of Torreira + Mustafi chooses reserves

by .

Processed with VSCO with c1 preset

Well, here we are, another day in Mustafi paradise.

The German didn’t move on. Juventus pondered a move and thought better.

I’m deeply disappointed, not from a footballing perspective, but from a personal one.

How can a young man have so little faith in their own ability to get their game back on track?

He’s basically blackballed himself. He’s sat and stayed for the money because he loves his contract. He’ll rot in our reserves, he’ll become irrelevant, then when the time comes for a new deal, he’ll have to pick up a lower-paying deal because everyone will know he’s a mercenary.

Football is a short career, play it.

We did manage to move on Mikhi. I thought he’d be a good signing, he wasn’t, he was a terrible move made under extreme duress in one of the worst deals of all time for both clubs involved.

I’m reading a book called Football Hackers, they have a bit of a thing for that time Klopp went down the pan in his last season at Dortmund. The gist was that he was just really unlucky, and xG numbers pointed that out. Colin Trainor went deeper, he pointed out some of the additional elements that factored in the failings… one of them was the quality of shots they were making. Mikhi being the main culprit for having a lot of shots of low quality… 34 returning zero goals.

The second, more interesting decline in Dortmund was the amount of defensive actions taken in the opposition half. Basically, good pressing. Mikhi’s contribution halved in a season.

Now, I know he went on to have a great season under Tuchel, so I did wonder if he’s just very affected by who is managing him and how. Or, he could just have had one really great season and never been able to repeat it.

I hope he finds something in Roma, because he really has looked finished for a while.

GREAT NEWS is this: He’s left an opening for Reiss, Gabriel, Saka OR ESR (who was called up to the first team). I know getting overly excited about upcoming talent is a bad thing, but come on, there’s a one in four chance of success here. I know they don’t all play Mikhi’s position, but there’s literally no senior cover out wide now. Get the kids in, let’s see what they can do… there’s no better position to test your mettle. I really, REALLY, hope one of the cuts the mustard.

Nacho has properly gone. I shed a tear. But one laced with joy. He was a great servant to the club. He’s a bit like Sagna for me, too good for the managers he’s played under. I wish him the best of luck in Spain, where he said he went to be with his family… god damn it, I’m welling up again.

Icardi moved to PSG. Be interesting to see how he gets on there, a proper tasty striker in my opinion. Now under the stuttering Thomas Tuchel. I have to say, I’m not sure what the fuck PSG have been up to this summer, it looks like Ed Woodward has been advising their transfers strategy, some real bland players entering the fray.

I saw that Frimpong moved to Celtic… then realised that there is more than one Frimpong in the world.

DENCH.

Remember when saying that to Arsenal fans was cool? Arsenal’s equivalent of WAASSSSSUPPPPP. Now it’s just, you know, lame.

Debate continued to roar after the Spurs game. I was very pleased to see The Daily Mail, Sky, and The Times gun for Harry Kane and his despicable cheating. He is English and he’s a disgrace. Someone needs to pull him to one side and tell him that what he did wasn’t shielding the ball, it was angling for a penalty. At least the refs are onto him.

I didn’t give Bernd Leno much of a grilling yesterday, so it feels fair that I give him one today.

He really needs to get his act together. Last season he made 5 errors that led to goals (joint worst in the league), this season, he’s already made two. That limp wrist wasn’t good. His overall performance was jittery. He needs to take a valium and calm down or the HUGE Matt Macey will have to step in and show him what keeping is all about. I hear he’s growing a ‘safe hands’ moustache to intimidate Bernd. I don’t condone it, but you do what you have to do to win in war.

Another point I missed was the Alex-Songification of Torreira. What is the obsession with making defensive midfielders play in more attacking roles? I don’t think it suits his game and I think it’s a bad idea. I know he can move the ball nicely, but there’s a very big difference between a cute 10-yard pass at the base of midfield to trying to be decisive in the opposition penalty box.

I also read that Joe Willock is injured. Could be why he was dropped yesterday, maybe he had an issue in the warm-up?

MATTEO. I watched that goal back again and it’s so good, I feel like I should be watching it at home locked in a bedroom. David Luiz, his hair spirit animal, had this to say.

“He’s a youngster with a lot of talent. He’s young but he’s a great player… He’s going to do great things not just for Arsenal, for France, but for the world.”

FOR THE WORLD INDEED, FAM!

Right, on that note, I’ll ask you to listen to my solo podcast about the meaning of dairy-free life… there’s a bit on Arsenal as well.

Ozil, Xhaka, Mustafi, Sokratis, Kolasinac and Mkhitaryan and Elneny coming back from their loans to be the next 6 players to leave please. Then we could cash in on Chambers and grow a nice bank for the next windows winter/summer.

65 mil euro for Icardi if PSG want him next summer doesn’t sound all that bad. He looks like a Chelsea striker to me. Interesting if he’d be successful in the Prem.

Cech free

Huge clear out, I have no doubts that if Ozil, Xhaka don’t shape up this season they will be culled next summer. We’ve got to get rid of Mustafi too, who won’t get much of a look-in this year but had no desire to actually go somewhere and play.

Emiratesstroller

Pedro Agree with your latest post. The departures of Mkhitaryan, Elneny and Monreal completes the clearout of the club this summer apart from Mustafi. Realistically Mustafi will be gone in next 12 months unless there is material improvement in his game, because Saliba will arrive next summer and Arsenal are not going to keep in squad SEVEN Centre Backs. Arsenal have now in their first team squad inclusive of Nkietah who is out on loan 5 teenagers with perhaps another two playing in U23s who are on the fringe of promotion. Realistically Arsenal can keep a maximum of 5 such… Read more »

The number of times Kane, Alli, Rooney, Vardy and to an extend Sterling, have dived in the EPL and no media branded them divers, is pure madness. They are the English sweethearts first and foremost. Especially Kane and Rooney.

Correct me if I’m wrong – Oumar Niasse is still the only player to receive a retrospective 2 game ban for diving.

ET “My main concern following Sunday’s game is the lack of leadership, communication and organisation of our defence ” . Luiz has added leadership communication and organisation to the backline. The only concern is in the quality of the players in the backline. Luiz-inconsistent Sok – Solid but capable of idiotic moments (ex. Mustafi is probably the last (or one of the last) players that epitomized the country club atmosphere that we had under Le Joke. It appears we are cleaning house so if Emery does nothing else that will be a plus i guess.

It’s no wonder what a shiiite show AFC was the past decade or so.

On Mkhitaryan

The bloke had everything in his locker to really do well
Technically sound. Good vision. Skill. Passing in final third
Could shoot with both feet.

His issue is 100% psychological. He’s got no heart. Same as ozil

How we ended up with these two on half a million per week I’ll never know. What was wenger thinking trading Sanchez for him?

Not even the same sport let alone same ball park

Paulinho

The fact we’ve binned Iwobi and Mikhi – two of our most used players last season – suggests to me the club are willing to take another hit this season for the long-term good of the club. They know those two are not good enough, but they also know it will leave us short this season , so in many ways this is still a transitional season and we could well still miss out on top four. Emery may have even wanted to keep Mikhi (why he used him on Sunday) but has to suck it up.

TitsMcGee

How we ended up with these two on half a million per week I’ll never know. What was wenger thinking trading Sanchez for him?”

We received more in fees from selling Iwobi than we received in fees for every other departure this window combined.

Valuable players, my ass. Less than £10m received for Mkhi, Elneny, Kos, Nacho, Jenko, Welbeck, and Assano combined. Ozil, Mustafi, and Xhaka not even good enough for a free transfer/loan deal with wages covered.

What a mess the previous regime left behind. Incompetence personified.

raptora

Mkhitaryan’s problem is just laziness man. That type of Eastern European players have a hard time giving their absolute all when they earn this vast amount of money. He was given so many opportunities to show what he’s got, and he’s showed time and time again that he’s just not committed into being as good as he can be anymore. He’s living the good life so it is not a required anymore. And that’s that.

And if you stop trying to improve yourself you surely have no place in a big team.

Un na naai

I also said last year that Leno was accident prone and was causing us to drop points
I wanted cech between the sticks for longer

Was laughed at.
Leno makes some very good saves and is decent with his feet but is so so suspect with his catching. Seems very unconfident.

Maybe he just has tiny little hands and can’t get them around the ball properly

Leftsidesanch

I’m just glad we have a regime that won’t suffer fools gladly.

raptora

Don,
Leno made a phenomenal save shortly after we conceded.

https://streamable.com/xbakz

Of course you’re gonna get laughed at for preferring Cech to Leno. Arsenal Cech doesn’t save that.

And Leno’s “mistake” for their first goal is one of the few he’s done in an Arsenal shirt. The amount of saves and his overall contribution to the team has been fantastic. He’s made that position his for many years to come if he can stay healthy.

Leno has made a few errors but he’s a good goalkeeper that makes great saves. He is valuable to us and our best goalkeeper.

Ha ha stay Dench!! Icardi should fit in nicely at PSG and will replace the ageing Cavani.

I’d love to have seen Icardi in England. He went from being a legend in Italy to a criminal so quickly.

Jamie

The only redeeming feature of Dench Frimpong was his hatred for Nasri.

siddharth14

I think Monreal’s departure may well have had a part to play in Mustafi staying at Arsenal. I’m sure he understands the importance of playing regularly at such a peak stage of his career. It’s very hard to accept that Mustafi chose to stay because of the money.

Un na naai

Raptora

He did but cech was more commanding last year and until his injury he was our best player

Mysticleaves

Rapt

Right! Leno is a fantastic goalkeeper. I am really glad we have him. He’s an immense keeper. Probably top 2 in terms of shot stopping and reflexes in the league.

Also watch how Guendouzi sprinted back from spurs area to ours. Dude can run for days. Really happy for him this season. Him and Willock fill me with happiness at what they can achieve with the right mentorship and growth.

Mysticleaves

On Mustafi, I have always maintained he’s not as bad as been made out, however he can be improved upon. In this squad, he’s firmly equal or better than Sokratis and Luiz. ATM, he’s shot. No confidence in himself and Arsenal fans have put a target on his back. Would have been best if he left but don’t be surprised if he regains a starting place before season end.

Allison may have committed mistakes, but I don’t think that he committed that many that directly resulted in a goal. Karius and Mignolet on the other hand made lots of mistakes and did not make the brilliant saves to compensate for their mistakes. When Leno arrived from Germany he had been dropped from their national team. There was doubt about his concentration level. Brilliant at one point in a match and then making a basic mistake the following minutes. He brought that at Arsenal. Against Spurs he made a basic mistake, but then a marvellous save for Son ahot. Don’t drag me into this, I didn’t have much of an opinion on Leno when we bought him outside that I hoped he would come good and it looked a good buy. Cech was obviously over the hill though and his ability on the ball especially held us back, he also was in the last year of his contract so of course you play the new keeper as much as possible. Basic stuff really.

azed

Last season we had Xhaka and Torreira at the base for lots of games. Torreira is more mobile than Xhaka so it’s more logical for Xhaka to sit.

As far as Xhaka plays, he’ll play at the base and I also think Emery doesn’t trust Torriera to sit at the base alone because of his size.

Guendozi is being groomed to play the 6 and it would be nice to see Guen and Tor in a 4-2-1-3 formation.

Nelson and Eddie have personally talked about Unai and his influence. Willock praised Freddie for his mentorship. Emery is always talking about Guen. Emery always calls up the youngsters to train with the seniors. Has given Saka and ESR chances in the first team. Would have probably played Willock in the NLD yesterday if he was fit
Even without the media, you can clearly see he’s involved with them.

Some thought that getting Leno was a gamble because of his reputation for lapse of concentration. I thought that for half the price Alban Lafont was a better choice.

He had a good season at Fiorentino. Unfortunately for him, already owned by the Viola Dragowski is a Future great. As he is back from loan, Lafont has been sent on a two years loan with option to buy and option to recall. So Fiorentino are hedging their bet. If Dragowski succeed then Lafont is sold, if not they just recall him and have an already made replacement.

There’s going to be an interview on the .com later this week with Emery and they’re asking fans on instagram what questions they should ask him.

An overwhelming majority of the responses are why Xhaka is still playing, some still defend him for some reason though.

An alarming amount of our fans(?) are asking why Ozil isn’t playing and think he’s still a world class player, I’m just going to assume that Pierre has opened up multiple accounts and doing his usual trolling routine.

Pierre

Here we go again.

Transitional manager…..short term manager…….caretaker manager…

Cop out, all excuses from the likes of fred, midwest, Marko, rh, azed etc.

Excuses because Emery is not up to scratch.

Put it this way, if Emery had come in and sorted out the defence , organised the midfield and made them into a cohesive unit , had the forward line firing on all cylinders.. ..would we be hearing phrases like caretaker, short term , transitional ..

Of course not…so stop making excuses for him , he’s our manager and that is the only criteria he should be judged on.

Pierre

Fred
I’m sure many of the fans will ask Emery the question as to why he brought Mhkitaryan on as sub when he knew he was leaving, especially as the game was crying out for someone with intelligence, composure, someone who will put their foot on the ball and play with patience.
Someone who wouldn’t continually lose possession of the football .

Guns of Hackney

One question for Emery:

Why are you dressing like a 18 year old Arab who is also masquerading as an undertaker crossed with male escort in Kurdistan?

The fanny.

Jamie

Ozil 1 assist every 871 minutes in the league last season. Absolute wank. Stop making excuses for him.

Leftsidesanch

Pierre let it go, we get that you don’t like the manager. Most on here have major reservations about him but have the ability to be objective.

EA Luiz isnt the leader we want but he is the best we have . Speking solely about the defensive unit. Sok communicates but he isnt an organizer. He is a motivator, fighter but not an organizer. Luiz is the best we have. Ofc you would want your leader to be good at what he does otherwise who would even follow them right. But Luiz is as good as we have. On his day he can be vv good and sometimes he can be a Mustafi. But he is constantly communicating and organizing. He cant be our captain because he… Read more »

Why do you think he brought on Mhkitaryan when he had Nelson, Ozil and Saka ( if he was on the bench) .

Maybe it is a deliberate attempt to confuse the opposition and our fans

Have to say it worked.

would we be hearing phrases like caretaker, short term , transitional .. _________ Yep.. we sure would because the Club does not agree with you.. Pierre. Emery was signed to a 2year contract with an option for a third but no repercussions if he is let go after 2 years. Unless you think 2 years is a long term commitment. He is being judged on his managing abilities… so not sure what your all up in arms about that term caretaker… cuz.. unlike Wenger if he screws up he will be let go… and the Club planned for that… hence… Read more »

I believe Mykhi to Roma was a real last minute deal. Maybe they both didnt know Mykhi was leaving . The rumours also popped up only hours after the derby.
And Saka was not on the bench. Nelson was and should have been bought on instead of Mykhi. And dont worry Ozil will get a chance to prove his worth . He’ll just have to take it.

Surely Pierre you are not complaining because the coach brought on one of our “technical players”

Put it this way, if Emery had come in and sorted out the defence , organised the midfield and made them into a cohesive unit , had the forward line firing on all cylinders.. ..would we be hearing phrases like caretaker, short term , transitional .. Pierre If Wenger had left a good squad, we won’t have had to spend two years replacing the who team. Of the Wenger Midfielder, only Xhaka remains.. Ozil is leaving on borrowed time. That’s how poor our squad was. Of the Wenger defence, only Bellerin and Holding would survive. Emery had been called a… Read more »

Pierre,
Thanks for the sweet nickname treacle

I don’t think Emery knew that Mhiki would be leaving at that point, I thought it was the wrong decision to do so as well. Had Mikki been more diligent in his play we could have won that game. He got himself into some good positions only to stifle the attacks.

If Emery was tearing it up… as you suggest. People would be asking why we didn’t sign him to a longer 3 to 5 year deal.. and would be scared he would be getting poached to Barca or some such.

Pierre: “Of course not…so stop making excuses for him , he’s our manager and that is the only criteria he should be judged on.” He has less than 9 months left on his contract. Not sure if you are aware of it. He has also been our manager for 1 season and 4 games. Where was your shapr tongue when Wenger was sitting on a comfy till death contract and we actually had to make our voice heard or he’d be stinking the place out in his 80s? Proven failure for 14 years. Yet you have problem with Emery who’s… Read more »

I think the biggest compliment I can pay to Emery is that if we pursued say a Allegri, I don’t think he will look at the current side and request £200m of investment as a caveat to him coming in. When he leaves, we will have been in a far better position than what we were when Emery came in the door. Much of the excess weight has been trimmed from the squad, it’s a younger squad with potential and promise. I think the only players over 30 are Auba (still of value), Sok (likely doesn’t see much game-time if… Read more »

We’ve made strides to ridding the club of the culture and attitude that has set us back for so long. You would hope that the penny drops this season and Xhaka is phased out of this team. He doesn’t lack for effort or desire but he is incapable of gaining experience from his errors.

Mystic, Not true. Some managers are more conservative in their players selection than others. You just look at the average age of Klopp’s team especially the fullback and you see a man not afraid of making the big call. Pochettino is another who gave youth team players a chance to make it. Fat Franck at Chelsea is in specific circumstances with the transfer ban, but he has already made clear that he believe in youth. The fact that may be misguided at Chelsea is a separate issue. Compare the number of players Louis Van Gaal gave their debut at ManUtd… Read more »

Wenger gloriously took us to our lowest points total in 22 years, then trousered a £10m golden parachute for his miserable efforts as he was led out the back door.

Thanks, Arsene. Still unemployed though. Sorry about that.

Firstly ,Mhkitaryan is more comfortable on the right flank , so to put him wide left was baffling.

Secondly, Mhkitaryan was leaving , let’s not pretend that Emery didn’t know that.

Thirdly , at that particular point the game needed a player who is not loose in possession of the ball and someone who plays with patience and intelligence.

Other than that , it was a very wise and astute decision to bring on Mhkitaryan.

One more thing Pierre. Don’t make it sound like Emery marginalized Ozil all of a sudden. It took a couple of years for Wenger to see it, which was normal for Wenger in his middle and late periods to react extremely slow to obvious problems, but he did marginalized Ozil by not playing him in tough away games much before Emery even emerged as a candidate for the Arsenal job. So don’t put the blame on Emery when your very own god, benched the player you worship. We all heard the illness and back problems excuses that were magically solved… Read more »

Pep… Guaranteed 3 years with City on his first deal.. signed up for another 3 years in 2018… Klopp same thing… guaranteed 3 year.. recently signed up for another 6 or something like that. Poch guaranteed 5 years on his first deal… now thinking about leaving. Lampard guaranteed 3 years with Chelsea. Emery 2 years to cleanup after a manager who had been here for 20 years… and maybe …. maybe we will give you 1 more. See the difference Pierre.. hence the term transition? I or anyone else didn’t make it up to defend Emery … it is what… Read more »
