Does Torreira to Milan make sense?

by .

Well, well, well… the ‘YOU TOOK THAT OUT OF CONTEXT’ police back-peddling hard as the Lucas T rumours kick it up another gear… again.

Of all the players I was hoping we’d ditch this summer, I have to be honest, he wasn’t up there… but the rumours keep persisting with a slightly different twist on them.

Now, we do have to remember, he came out in the press and said everything about England is shite. Hard to brush that under the carpet, whichever internet translator you use. There’s a history of South American’s not quite liking the vibes in the UK, and right now, he’s in the shop window of The Copa America. All these rumours have started for a reason, and my take is they’re there to make sure scouts are paying attention to him over the next month.

Question here is this: the second half of the season fade we saw from LT, is that just a first season thing? Or is it something deeper. He’s a very small player that lacks power, he’s not exactly built for war like Kante, is he? Mesut Ozil always fades in the second half of the season because he’s not fit enough for the league. Is there a chance that’s LT? Just playing devil’s advocate here…

Whatever the deal is, it’s not good news that over a month into the close season, the hottest exit rumour out of the club is a player we all think is a bit of a future star.

As I said a couple of weeks ago, I think we have a very big problem mounting. Everyone in Europe knows who we want to sell. Xhaka, Ozil, Kola and Mustafi are all very well paid players, and it’s pretty clear that Arsenal are VERY keen to move them on. We have absolutely no leverage. Why would anyone go big now? Wait until we’re desperate to move them on at the end of the transfer window and see if you can nab a deal.

It’s a horrible thing to have to write, but be honest, you’d bet your house that all 4 of those players will be lining up in preseason this summer in that sweet Adidas training gear. That is going to be VERY disruptive if Emery dropped 1 out of 5 stars in their end of season reviews.

I’d like to think that we’re going to have some good news on the player front by preseason, but even that side of things appears to be moving slowly. My hope here is that we’re getting hard balled by clubs hoping to start a bidding war for their players. Celtic certainly appear to be quite firm about not losing another great player for fuck all. Maybe that’s the same across the board? Maybe small clubs are waiting to see where the first £200m signing goes before pricing their players?

I’d heard from a good place that the Zaha deal was very close with the player before the Europa League Final, the question is whether we’re still able to play in price ranges like that now we’re back in the poverty cup again.

Rumours elsewhere appear to be the same stories recycled. Saliba for £30m. Carrasco if he can escape. Whatever is going on, it’s a slow summer so far and it’s very hard not to fall into the doom trap thinking that if you don’t have the right people in place, it’s very hard to make the right decisions.

Also worth noting that almost no journalist is good with transfer rumours, so all these muppets on twitter highlighting great sources don’t know what they’re talking about. The whole transfer game is about deceit. Clubs try to move players on and attract buyers via the press. Agents constantly gas to anyone that will listen. Journalists and bloggers alike are desperate for hits so will go big without checking the veracity of the rumours. Even players are part of the game.

You can also have the most elite piece of information you can imagine… then BANG, you look like an idiot because a manager had a change of heart.

It’s a minefield out there… but one thing is for sure, it’s not good news when you’re a month into a rebuild and no one has been bought or sold.

Right, see you in the comments.

Accept on the face of it the club appear to be doing nothing?or dragging their heels? All this talk of spunking money here & there is optimistic at best.

“Yes they have been inherited a bad situation, but conversely they have also worked very hard to make it worse.”

And you will have to explain this to me pls

How exactly have they made it worse? When Raul and Emery got here we were a Europa league team with a champions league wage bill…now we are still a Europa league team with a champions league wage bill…if anything we are standing still but i can’t see how we are worse off than a year ago

Have you considered the possibility it is near impossible to move dud players who are paid 350k weekly. We have to pay off their contracts to moves them on, money we certainly don’t have.
I think it’s disingenuous to just say people are paid lots of money to move them out because that implies there’s some magical tool to use.
Truth is that it will take 1-2 seasons to let out the toxins from this club.

@CG

Raul may well have been part of the Ozil deal and Wenger may well not have been. I don’t know what went on behind the closed doors.

What we do know for absolute certainty though was that Gazidis was the man in overall charge who signed it off. He had the power to veto it and he didn’t.

Wenger still gets lumped in with it though because he’s the guy that spent FIVE MILLION QUID on Park Chu-Young.

Raul should try to negotiate a split payment for Saliba. Since they want him back for a year, we’ll withhold 80% of the payment until next year. Or better still, we’ll give them one of those players we try to sell.

There’s a logical explanation as to why we can’t announce even the minor deals.

It seems we have to wait until after the new kit deal becomes effective on July 1st because if we roll out photo shoots now, it will be with the outgoing Puma kit.

I suspect that minor deals like Martinelli will be announced very quickly after Adidas deal formally starts.

It’s difficult to break the culture that seeped in over 10 years in one season. It’s certainly not easy to sell overpaid players who are determined to run down their contracts, players that other clubs aren’t lining up to sign. I was just thinking, If Emery walked away right now after a spat with the owner or board, are we really that attractive to top managers. It seems Arsenal are winning the race for Saliba with the much le-grove criticized back on loan for a year to the parent club. I find the opposition to this deal a bit OTT. For all the talk of 26m, i’m sure it is including added bonuses in the form of minimum appearances, goals conceded, cups won, matches won etc. And it’s not like we are going to make a lump-sum payment here. Kevin Campbell on Zaha “He can hit the ground running”

I’ve seen Zaha play. He’s much more versatile than that. He can hit the ground in slow motion, sprinting, sideways, from a stiff breeze or even just a look sometimes. Let’s be honest, if Tom Daley is ever looking for a new partner for the synchro competition, Zaha’s got to be a candidate!

:Points of interest from Ornsteins piece:

– Arsenal have a budget of around £45m this summer

– Arsenal like Zaha, and he likes Arsenal but we wouldn’t be able to afford him without generating finance through player sales (i.e Aubameyang)

– AC Milan have admiration for Torreira but the price makes this a non-starter and are focused on other targets (as pointed out by Marko)

– Arsenal remain in talks over Tierney and Saliba

Jamie

Respected owners have said they they inquired about the availability of Xhaka, Mustafi, Mkhi, and Ozil. Raul/Vinai/Emery all took a conference call and said the lot were for sale as a bundle for £1.

The respected owners then hung up the phone one by one.

Not much more Emery could do.

Receding,

The list that I gave a few weeks ago included one purchase that was within our TW budget. Barcelona bought a CB for 500k from Toulouse in January because he was in the last year of contract. 500k is Less than Suarez loan fee!

So like I said there were possibilities that Raul ignored. Again we are not talking of world class player, just player better than Mustafi and Lichsteiner.

In fact have we ever had a TD??

China1

Haha Jamie I’m sorry but that story doesn’t sound even a little bit realistic

Also if Stan was willing to throw 11m at emery to spend on a random unknown player I’m 100% certain he would’ve allowed him to spend it on another player instead of leaving him stuck with Suarez or nothing

Nelson theres nothing to suggest we aren’t acting though, so they will just rubbish any communication. I have a friend from uni who is part of the AST.

Marko

Fair enough on Kolasinac and Mustafi but there was alarming bells on the signing of Xhaka. His card count prior to joining was an indication of his defensive troubles

Victorious

Palace want 80M for Zaha? I mean after mugging off united by scooping 50M for Bissaka? What are they smoking up there? Or could it be they just take other clubbs for fools

Let them keep him,way more value in getting Ziyech or Chiesa.

We might as well try for Sane if we intend splurging that much on a winger.

Batistuta

Receeding You seem to have an excuse lined up for every single criticism of either Emery or Arsenal as a whole. So tell me who do we blame for anything really or are we still just going to keep blaming Gazidis and co and saying no one wants our players so we’ll just hold on to them till their contracts expires? Isn’t it the job of the new guys whom are paid handsomely to sort out the mess they met because i really don’t understand this whole holding brief for them each time. There’s a market for every single player… Read more »

China1 –

Are you doubting my sources? Todibo was on everyone’s radar last Jan. Barca just got there first and made a fool of Emery.

Raul even called the player’s mum, and Edu (although not an employee of the club at the time) was set to fly to France to open negotiations on behalf of Arsenal, even though he was employed by someone else.

China what is funny is that what Jamie is doing is flying right over your head

Jamie sits in on negotiations at Arsenal …he is the real ITK

He knows all the “respected club owners”

CG

Surely if Arsenal stop this Tierney nonsense ( we have Sead K- who is better)

Forget this obscene Saliba deal … ( £28 million for a teenager!!! And you wait 12 months for him- if you are lucky)

Sell Torreira ( we have AMN – who is miles better) to Milan

We have the funds for Zaha……
No excuses
And the player wants to join us.

When next you’re in Italy, i owe you a beer… Man speaks so much sense

Valentin

Marko, Gaslighting somebody by lying, implying falsehood is not winning an argument. Arsenal had no counter-arguments when Real Madrid sent Zidane the French icon who personally guaranteed to his parent that he would take care of Varane. Real Madrid also accepted to let him stay an extra year at his local club, so he could pass his baccalaureat. His parents wanted him to complete his education before pursuing a football career. Also like I said, as a 17 years old Italian defender if Juventus comes to court you, you are unlikely to refuse them in favour of Arsenal. Rugani made… Read more »

The club is always so soft on clubs and players too Reminds me of the wenger days when we’d inquire about a player to sign and they’d say he’s not for sale and we’d be like OH WELL WE TRIED Everyone has a price, we were just too passive and clueless to know when to push for it and be assertive and when to walk away Same with our own players. If you tell xhaka and mustafi theyll be in the reserves next season they won’t stay if we accept an offer for them These two are in their primes… Read more »

“You seem to have an excuse lined up for every single criticism of either Emery or Arsenal as a whole.” Questions not excuses …learn to differentiate You are yet to come up with workable solutions besides they are paid handsomely to sought it out. Lets say we want Mustafi out, he is on say 80k a week, a club in Germany expresses interest, out of desperation we cave in and agree he goes for free even, the club now says due to their pay structure they can only pay Mustafi 35k a week and he says no thanks …what next???… Read more »

Xhaka earns 90k and at circa 40 mil and 26 years of age he’s not putting off Atlético on that basis. Pure conjecture.

I mean he literally put them off. Xhaka 26 90,000 a week and would cost between 30-40 million. Llorente 24 on 25,000 a week and cost them 40 million euros. Maybe they are working behind the scenes on getting rid of some players I assume it but it’s a very valid point to say that it’s not easy because we’ve got overpaid and underperforming players.

Goodness me, when will we not have to witness such writing
