The King of Europa moves troops onto the #BattleOfBaku

by .

via @Arsenal Instagram

Well, like a breakfast beer, last night certainly took the edge off of a horrible week. Unai Emery is famous for his aptitude in the Europa League and the man once again delivered a sort of masterclass type thing for the fans.

Short report:

  • We scored 4 goals from 5 shots on target
  • Defended badly
  • Won

Do we need to go any deeper?

Maybe.

Last night was the only response to the awful end of season run. The manager knew that, you could he was feeling the heat, he looked like he’d just been The Guardian had found a lightly homophobic tweet from 2003 they were running with in Sunday’s. Could have just been the sunshine, but he’s Spanish, those guys eat heat for breakfast.

The performance was nervy. I suspect even if that were the invincibles, they’d have been feeling the same pressure. Spurs and Liverpool defied footballing history with two outrageous wins, sure, Valencia are hopeless, but the Champions League certainly gave them a huge shot of belief… the early goal probaly helped that feel a little more real.

We dug out a result. Our strikers, all £120m of them, delivered the goods. They love playing together, they make magic out of nothing and last night they put Valencia to the sword.

I keep coming back to it, but I find the critique of Auba utterly baffling. 29 goals and people still completely misunderstand his game and the blatant value he brings. He doesn’t rely on pace, he’s a team player, he works like a lunatic and he’s the out and out fox-in-the-box Wenger wanted back in 2000. I love him.

‘He misses chances’ is such a moronic whinge. PEAK Thierry would have the most shots on target and the most off. Auba and Lacazette have been lethal this season. Their conversion rate has kept us from sliding into abject mediocrity. So it proved again last night.

Mesut was back to his imperious worst. He’s like the fat kid in PE faking lung cancer to land a pass. At one point he managed to plod back into an accidental defensive situation, the pass was struck and he shirked. He’s really not into the Emery regime, which is a real shame, because he‘s the most gifted player we own. The real kick was Iwobi and Mikhi were benched in favor of the German. Dortmund and Everton calling this summer you would hope.

The defence was shambolic. No structure, communication or understanding of the task at hand. Amazing we are still bemoaning these issues at this stage of the season. Another two goals shipped against a pub team.

I’m just thankful they had no real power. Like Napoli, they were featherweight and lacked true quality.

We won’t be afforded that luxury against Chelsea. Well, we might. Our London counterparts stumbled to a penalty shootout win over a fun Frankfurt side that punched above their weight.

The Europa final this season is a scene. Two Enlgish teams in utter disarray made the final. The Premier League finally made moves on Europe. A London Derby in Baku and 2nd vs 4th. All it took was an upgrade on our coaching talent to make it happen.

Now it’s a coin toss, who knows. When it comes to Emery in Europa, never write him off… this is his iron throne.

… I know I touched on it again, but I really hope the 4 team English final thing isn’t allowed to devolve into a money thing.

The last decade has absolutely been dominated by the Spanish. 7 of the winners, Spanish. They’ve had 9 finalists. 2 all Spanish finalists. Their teams spend a shit ton of money, break laws, dodge tax have execs in prison because of it. Barca and Madrid have had the best players of the last decade. Now it’s England’s turn. Fuck anyone who tells us things have to change because the big boys can’t hack it because the Premier League organised itself better, more democratically and is now winning hard.

If Europeans find it boring, fuck them, no one cares.

Right, see you in the comments. x

Auba was absolutely awesome last night. Not only his best ever performance for us, but one of the best performances by any Arsenal forward for many years. We absolutely have to build around him and Laca in the summer and ensure we add others who will play to their strengths.

Do I win anything…..?

Is Ramsey so mangled that cant be ready for a game in 3 weeks?

HighburyLegend

Some reasons to hope for the final : 1) Cheslea will be considered as favourites, we will be the underdogs; 2) Since the arrival of Emery we are much better against them than during wenger’s last years; 3) We can expect a bit of the “superiority syndrom” from them; 4) Laca and Auba are on fire… The 2 things that are a concern imo is the lack of experience of our squad in a very big event, compared to theirs, and the fact that Hazard will be hugelly motivated, as it will be his final game for the Chavs. The… Read more »

Auba was superb. Thats what you pay £56m for. As you pointed out Pedro, last night did show us a lot of the negatives. We are so weak in the full back positions that teams consistently target us down the sides of our CBs. As much as Mustafi is our worse player, I would say the full back positions are our main area of weakness. There was one point where AMN followed a Valenica player into central midfield and left Guedes in a huge amount of space, and he honestly couldnt see the problem. The final is a 50/50 really.… Read more »

Pedro , you dismiss Aubamayang’s missed chances as a “moronic whinge” of which I happen to agree yet one could say that your description of Ozil last night was a ” moronic whinge”. You say Aubamayang is a “team player” which again I happen to agree but one could say that Ozil is a team player depending on what perspective you are coming from. For the first 20minutes Ozil touched the ball once , mainly due to our hoofing the ball up to our strikers . From about the 20th minute onwards Ozil came into the game and was heavily… Read more »

Pierre

Sorry, Ozil is finished at this club.

He basically used to be the best “assister” in European football, who let himself down by not scoring enough, not putting any defensive effort in.

Now the creativity has gone.

Hes just a shell of a player, spending most of his time hiding out on the wings.

Davey

Ozil was a liability ran around in little circles with no effort had no effect on our attacking play you can spin anything you like about pass completion bollocks but he was a passenger and one we could do without in Baku

HighburyLegend

“I wouldve much preferred Frankfurt”

Yes but in this case we would have been the huge favourites… which is wouldn’t be good.
(lol)

Globalgunner

Auba wont win us the league. He is too infuriatingly suspect when the chips are down. Hattrick?…so what. I would trade his yesterday hattrick for 2 goals in 2 games that would have given us 2 wins instead of draws. Specifically against Tottenham and Brighton. Then again, what this team really needs is more goals from across the pitch. Who else apart from the strikers scores any goals at this club?

Graham62

Auba got a superb hat trick but can’t deny Lacazette was also top notch last night.

With these two on fire, we can beat Chelski.

AMN had another one of his “play in first gear” periods in the first half. Emery must have given him a rollicking at HT.

Interesting to see if those few posters who have been belittling the losers trophy come on here today to keep spouting their hatred towards Emery.

No doubt they were cheering every goal last night.

Chris

Pierre

What you described in Ozil’s play last night is fine, but it sure as heck isn’t worth £350,000 a week. We are entitled to expect more from him.

HighburyLegend

“Interesting to see if those few posters who have been belittling the losers trophy come on here today to keep spouting their hatred towards Emery.”

@Graham : why do you ask the question, when you already know the answer ?? lol

gambon

We desperately need to add more goals outside of Auba & Laca.

We are far too reliant on them.

Especially as our only other reliable goalscorer, Aaron Ramsey, if off.

Pierre

Gambon It wouldn’t bother me either way if he stays or leaves the club….pointless having a player in the club that the manager doesn’t trust , though I believe a different manager would appreciate his strengths instead of focusing on his weaknesses I still find it poor ownership and decision making to appoint a manager who will never appreciate a player like Ozil 6 months after giving him a ludicrous contract ..doesn’t make sense to me. I am no great fan of Mkhitaryan but in the absence of Ramsey would play him instead of Ozil in the final, he is more mobile has an eye for a pass and in simplistic terms runs about a bit more than our beloved cod eyes. Although the game was done when he came on I watched him closely and in the hole would give us so much more in my opinion.

HighburyLegend

Agree with Davey.

Pierre

Chris
His wages are just a stick to beat him with …it’s the club’s fault for offering him the contract.
Ozil will play how he always plays whether he earns 350 quid a week or 350,000, surely that easy to see…..last night he helped the team reach another final ( 5 finals in 5 years whilst he has been at Arsenal ) , the previous 5 years nothing …..make it that what you will but our faults have always been defensive not offensive whilst he has been at the club ( and before).

I have just posted on last thread details of an article that has appeared in today Telegraph written by Daniel Schofield about Saracens. This identifies that Saracens recruited in 2009 Ventner a South African who lasted just 2 years at club. He took over from Jones [current England Coach]. The club was at time full of international stars but did not win trophies or produce results. Ventner by his own admission was not popular as either player or coach, and was brought in to do hatchet job. He was ruthless and culled 15 players from the squad in first year.… Read more »

Sounded like you described Elneny and not our highest paid supposed to be the superstar difference maker assist king that we’re paying for? Maybe we could expect more than 2 good games a season from him, or is that too much to ask now?

Drop the pity party about Ozil not being trusted by the manager, he’s not trusted because he doesn’t perform, not the other way around. Same reason he’s not playing for Germany anymore ( even if he made a whole song and dance about it to deflect)

So who you recommend as LB first signing?

We can’t have Kolasinac as first teamer.

Good things are said about Halstenberg of Leipzig.

Dalbert of Inter has an interesting profile. Not worked out for him at Inter and they are willing to sell around the 15-18m mark.

Pierre

Davey
Yes, I rate Mhkitaryan unlike many on here , and yes he does give us more directness , he is a very good CAM but unfortunately has not been used very often in that position.

However , last night Arsenal needed to take control of the game after the first 20 minutes and Ozil made the difference at that particular stage of the game .though of course I wouldn’t expect him to receive any credit .
Mhkitaryan came on at the right time when Arsenal needed more energy so it was a good substitution.

Leedsgunner

If Lacazette is still here next season i would appoint him as captain. The way he has responded to Aubameyang’s arrival has been sensational and so so professional. He didn’t throw a fit, or go on a sulk. He pulled up his socks and put the work in. Not only that he convinced and transformed his greatest rival into a lethal partner and ally. That’s what leadership looks like. He put the interest of Arsenal Football Club first. Inspirational is a word that’s overused these days but that’s exactly what he has been. It’s imperative that we keep him and… Read more »

What is a chance created exactly? I read it’s a pass that results in a shot at goal.

Stats don’t tell the whole story. Ozil has been poor for at least 2 seasons now.

I wouldn’t expect you to have an understanding of what Ozil brought to the team last night during a very difficult period as you have little understanding of the game.

Shame you don’t defend some of our players in the way you defend our manager.

I dont necessarily think you need to spend huge money on full backs. I think they go a bit under the radar compared to wingers and strikers.

Robertson was £8m, Ferland Mendy was £4.5m, There are bargains out there.

I like the look of Kieran Tierney. Obviously its hard to judge players from Scotland, but he looks like he could be top class.

Pierre

That
“Stats don’t tell the whole story. Ozil has been poor for at least 2 seasons now.”

tell all the posters on here that stats mean nothing as they seem to keep reiterating Ozil’s lack of assists…..so maybe that stat doesn’t tell the whole story…

Or does it only work when it’s a negative about Ozil not a positive.

Alberto Moreno is still only 26.

Maybe he can be fired up to his best, at his best he is a very fine full back and might even make a better wing back than most of our options.

Defensively suspect though but still has pace and wouldn’t cost that much.

Moreno has been a car crash since he come to the PL.

He is on a free this summer though, so its not inconceivable.

Would allow us to spend money elsewhere, then replace Moreno in 2020 anyway.

Pierre

Moreno…defensively weak , we need full backs that are defensively strong.

Danny

You have a point and from what I have read he won’t be able to travel to Baku

gambon

Moreno apparently off to Benfica to sign Grimaldo.

Maybe we sign Grimaldo.

Chilwell, Tierney, Grimaldo, Firpo, Mendy – lots tof good LBs around.

Nelson

The major problem of our team is defense. Xhaka, Kola and AMN were bad yesterday. Especially Xhaka, not only he couldn’t cover, he gave the ball away multiple times. Kola didn’t track runners. Our formation needs the two strikers to support the two wing backs when defending. In the first half, AMN was left alone defending. In the second half, Auba came back to help him out.

I want to see Xhaka and Kola traded this Summer and replace by a proper DM and a fast winger..

Ishola70

Borussia Dortmund and Marseille are on Dalbert the LB from Inter.

Receding Hairline

“Moreno apparently off to Benfica to sign Grimaldo.”

Not a bad move for him at all, might be a case of England not just suiting him

We do need fullbacks though, the manner of both of Valencia’s goals last night was alarming. Monreal is finished both as a full back and a center back.

AMN should either replace Elneny in midfield (where no one seems to trust him) or be sold to play as a winger somewhere his level

Dream10

Thought Mesut was alright last night.

Aubameyang’s performance last night was tremendous . Amazing that we have a goal scorer of this calibre, when richer teams are constantly looking for a goal getter like him. His primary skill is finding space and being on the end of chances.

Freddie Ljungberg

Yes Pierre, it’s been obvious for some time that you are the only one in the world that understands what Ozil brings nowadays. I don’t defend the manager dimwit, I however understand that any manager forced to play with Wengers leftovers are doomed so it doesn’t matter until most of them are replaced. I think Chilwell will be priced too high by Leicester.

He’s good and looks a natural LB but I don’t think he is the best defensively just yet and he can switch off defensively as well. Big room to improve even more of course but for the money Leicester would ask for him bit steep really.

He’s very good going forward though.

Danny

When we beat Chelsea back in January, this was the line up:
Leno
Bellerin
Sokratis
Koscielny
Kolasinac
Xhaka
Torreira
Guendouzi
Ramsey
Aubameyang
Lacazette

No Ozil there! Plus no Mustafi and Iwobi.
…..but no Ramsey, Bellerin (who got his injury in that match) and Leno for the final (even though Cech shouldn’t play).

englandsbest

Okay.

If I thought that Emery was the second-worst calamity that happened to Arsenal (Wenger naturally the first-worst) I would write a piece like Pedro.

I’d say. Valencia were hopeless. Emery was feeling the heat, it was the strikers who did it, why hasn’t Emery used Ozil properly,

And to cover myself in case we win the Final, I’d say, never write him off,he’s lucky In Europa Cup).

And yes, I might end by playing the patriotism card, the virtuous EPL against the corrupt La Liga.

Dream10

Links to Grimaldo have gone quiet over the last couple of months. Alex Telles off to Atletico Madrid, Alex Sandro destined for PSG leaving Marcelo (likely to Juventus), Grimaldo and Ferland Mendy the most high profile LBs on the market. There’s value in the Championship with RB Max Aarons and LB Jamal Lewis, both of Norwich, being highly rated. Earlier this week, we were leaving linked to Lloyd Kelly, Bristol City’s LB. Yeah thought they would price him real high.

I just mentioned him because he was in Gambon’s list and didn’t think it was really a realistic signing. Their price is high though because however much he has impressed and has room to improve he isn’t the finished product. Not defensively just yet.

Who is going to buy him for 40-50m then?

gambon

We need two-way players at LB and RB.

Bellerin used to be a two way player but in the last few seasons has gone downhill defensively.

Kolasinac and AMN are one way players, who are both fairly decent attackers.

We need pacey players that can attack and defend, and quickly recover.

Why hasn’t Emery used Ozil properly?

You can argue that Auba isn’t used properly and he still scores. We have no wide player.

Words on a Blog

Depending on whether we win the Europa or not, the money available for transfers looks like it’s gonna be tight, or very tight. So it’s obvious that any squad improvement will take a few more transfer windows, and will need to be funded in part by player sales. If that’s the case, rather than who should be sold, the question then becomes, who absolutely must be retained as the nucleus for the upgraded squad that hopefully emerges in the next 1-2 years? Best news we can have is if Hazard goes into Real Madrid house hunting mode and develops a special ‘hamstring injury’ situation.

If you were arsenal management and wanted Ozil, Mikki, mustafi off the wage bill but couldn’t find a buyer because of the monster wages they are on, how do you go about solving this conundrum?

It’s amazing to think we spend almost 35 million a year on wages for – Ozil, xhaka, mustafi and mikki

Nelson

It is the first time AMN played in an important game away from home. He was overwhelmed in the first half. He has stabilized his side in the 2nd half. The second was Kola’s fault. Cech is leaving, and is going to Chelsea as a coach apparently.

Playing Cech would be like playing NKetiah ahead of Lacazette just because hes a nice boy.

What about Kristian Pedersen at Birmingham? He’s 24, and doing well there. Currently less that £3m on transfermarket. Chiwell, Maguire and Maddison are all ex Championship players so Pedersen shouldn’t be dismissed. Plus, Danes tend to settle well in EPL.

If Man United manage to offload Sanchez what about offering Özil for Luke Shaw? With Sanchez off the books they’ll have no problem affording Özil, if he wanted to go. EPL proven and hungry to prove a point…
