Terrible decisions spoil Emery’s excellent tactical plan

by .

I don’t tend to attack officials, but in a game of paper-thin lines, every decision counts. Today, things did not fall in favour of Unai Emery’s Arsenal. Two penalty decisions ruined an almost flawless execution of a peak-Mourinho-Chelsea game plan.

The first decision came when Xhaka gifted Spurs a freekick in a dangerous area. The well-delivered cross flew dangerously close to Harry Kane 8 yards out, Mustafi identified the threat late and leaned in with a nudge the ref saw. The penalty was awarded, but on closer inspection, it was clear that our defence had held its line really well, with Harry Kane clearly offside. Even worse, the linesman was behind the play half a yard. The penalty was never in doubt.

The next penalty fell our way, Mikhi released Auba who was bundled over, the decision was no doubt dubious, but the award felt fair if you’re of the ‘it evens itself out’ mindset. Auba took the kick, taking a straight line run-up, Lloris guessed right and palmed the ball away, Vertonghen then ran back and blocked the second wave attack, clearing off the line. Again, on closer inspection, it was clear that Jan had encroached dramatically into the area. There aren’t many things you need to pay attention to on the penalty, so it’s baffling this was missed. You get the feeling there are important rules and those that are deemed not so important.

You have the two sides of the VAR coin on full display here. If the refs have assistants in the cloud, both penalties aren’t given. Sure, you lose some of the excitement, but ultimately, do you really care if the result is just? If the season finishes and Arsenal miss out on Champions League by 1 point, is it fair? I would always prioritise a fair result over excitement. Also, interested to see how VAR affects the dark arts of Spurs next season.

The shame of the bad decisions is it ruined a mostly excellent tactical execution. Emery started with Ramsey and Lacazette. He left LT on the bench. We opted to give Spurs possession so we could strike on the counter. The plan worked really well, Arsenal broke up play in their own box, Xhaka released a quick long ball to the halfway line, Spurs made a mess of the ball, Aaron was released, he powered through, took the ball past Lloris and narrowly squeezed the ball into the empty net. World class composure. I always think of Theo when players break on their own like that. Banter years PTSD.

We had some great chances to further our lead. Lacazette blazed a cut back shockingly wide. Iwobi got the better of Trippier, making space to curl a shot at the top corner, Lloris with a cat-like jump to deny him.

The subs at halftime made sense, Lucas was brought on to bring more solidity. Emery took Ramsey off fairly early for Ozil and Lacazette was switched out for the pace of Auba.

Our sharpshooter from Gabon didn’t have a great time of it, he fluffed his lines in front of goal and took a particularly shite penalty considering his quality, but it is what it is.

1 point is no disaster away to a very good Spurs side, but there’s a good chance that slip will cost us in the run for top four. Particularly if the result doesn’t go our way when we welcome United next week.

Overall though, we had a strong game. We accepted that going toe-to-toe with Spurs wasn’t going to bring home the bacon, we set traps for them all day and we defended like we actually cared about the clean sheet. Our players pressed like demons, they camped outside our box and all took personal accountability for doing their bit. Nacho was excellent, Kos used his experience well and Sokratis was a thorn in the side of Harry Kane all day. I really love the Greek, he’s a proper warrior, you’d never give him a parking ticket, would you?

Ultimately, it’s hard to account for players like Mustafi and to a lesser extent, Xhaka. You just know the German cannot resist making dim decisions. He’s always in there with an unsneaky nudge or a rash slide tackle. He simply cannot resist it, he started early yesterday, he makes the refs hyperaware what he’s up to and then decisions go against him. There’s also no obvious excuse, he doesn’t lack pace, he’s not young, he must have been told about this by coaches.

Xhaka is a slightly different beast because most of his poor expressions on the pitch are because he lacks pace. He’s constantly a yard behind the play and the only way he can counter that is with niggly fouls. The challenge you have with the Swiss is his ability to move play forward is unchallenged in the league, that long ball to the halfway line gave us an opening (even if it didn’t make its intended target directly). The club has to be looking at this as we head into the summer.

Next week is huge. I think it’s fair to say that Arsenal certainly do have a squad good enough to sustain a top 4 challenge. We’re right in the mix and it’s now March, it’s not in doubt. There can be no complaints we don’t have the squad. We are more than capable of beating United at home, I am even more certain of that after we nearly pulled off a masterclass against Spurs. If Southampton can get at them, we can.

The squad cannot feel sorry for themselves after being robbed today. We have to come back fighting and take the game to United. They have a fast frontline and two players that are expert at finding them on the break. We need to be smart and counter that threat. We also need a really fucking big performance from our two strikers to make up for today.

A few additional shoutouts. Bernd Leno is really starting to look like a good keeper. I don’t think the team has adapted to playing out the back, so it’s hard to judge his impact there. However, his double save was world class. We finally have a keeper that is capable of stopping the unexpected. That’s so valuable to the defence.

Additionally, let’s give Iwobi some props. He had a very good performance, he created chances, nearly scored, defended well and made a nuisance of himself. I also thought it was another superb game from Mikhi who is starting to look like value for money. He’s ambitious with his passing, he’s working hard for the team and he’s proving a far more decisive of late.

It’s all about United. This is essentially our #Top4 cup final. We have to come away with three points. Especially after United just beat Southampton with a very late United-ish winner.

Right, see you in the comments xxx

I believe gambon is taking the Pochetino approach to looking at yesterday’s game as in if Xhaka is sent off early in the game everything else is changed. Depends on whether or not you actually think that challenge is an obvious red or not

Dissenter

The Xhaka challenge was a yellow card at best.
It wouldn’t have changed anything because Xhaka is used to living on a yellow card.

I predicted on Friday we would win yesterday and if we didn’t I would be pissed off and that’s how it has turned. A missed opportunity. We are on an upward curve at the moment and need to make hay while the sun shines. I suspect we will have a collective dip again before the end of the season and get turned over at Watford or Everton. Top four is gone but I don’t think it will take much for to get us really in the mix for it next season. The average level of footballer is pony in Europe… Read more »

Benny Maybe, maybe not. Read your Twitter feed: there are refs who think Kane’s pen was a pen, refs who think Auba’s pen wasn’t a pen, and refs who don’t think the encroachment was a big deal. Not to mention there are matches we’ve won or drawn on account of questionable calls that went our way. VAR would take those away. I will never understand people who spend their time talking about what might have been had this or that decision gone a different way. That’s the game. Them’s the breaks. Sometimes you benefit from bad calls, sometimes you don’t,… Read more »

Marko

In the second half they basically created feck all so yeah you could easily surmise that if the flag went up we most likely would have gone on to won

bennydevito

Marko,

Robertson cost Liverpool £8m and he has definitely improved Liverpool’s defence.

How much did Chillwell, Maguire and perrieira cost Leicester?

Lascelles and Schar cost Newcastle?

There absolutely are £10 – £25m bracket defenders out there that will improve us, we just need to scout better.

gambon

The point is, if Kanes penalty wasn’t given, the last 15 mins play out completely differently.

In fact, every aspect of the game from the very first time VAR was used play out completely differently.

We couldve won 4-0 or lost 3-2 or drawn 2-2.

bennydevito

Bamford,

Yes I get your point but if all the correct decisions went everyone’s way the year Leicester won the league we would have actually won the league and that is massive.

Bamford10

Benny

Yeah, I don’t accept that at all; Leicester City were better than us, and they won the league because they were the best team in the league that season.

Bamford10

Sorry, I meant to say there are refs who DON’T think the encroachment was a big deal.

Dissenter

It’s going to be interesting having FOUR teams vie for the 3rd and 4th spots. Sours will get sucked in as soon as they play their big games away against and City.
United have an advantage because they are the only one in the group off four that won’t have European football soon.
Besides that there’s a lot to play…lots of football to come.
We may have a better picture by April 1st but it’s really too early with 9 games left to go.

Bamford10

QNA

Not enough in what sense? In the sense that we should get more for those players? Or in the sense that we need to generate more cash than that?

bennydevito

gambon,

Yes that’s a fair point too. Kind of like sliding doors (the movie) and parallel dimensions.

James.wood

The linesman was incompetent end of.

bennydevito

Bamford,

Whether you accept that or not is irrelevant, and I don’t dispute Leicester weren’t the better team, but if all decisions had been called correctly we’d have had more points.

Pierre,

You’ve referred to this point; are there any links out there that can back this up?

At the end of the day we can’t go back in time so it’s pointless anyway, I’m just glad VAR will be in next season to make sure the best teams win the prizes and not lose them because of bad decisions.

Leftsidesanch

The top 4 is a 4 team race, Spurs and Utd with the advantage. I do think Spurs and Chelsea have the trickier set of fixtures. It could end up completely different. All teams will drop points.

qna

Bamford. Not enough for those players.

qna

At the end of the day we got a good point. A win would have been pointless anyway if we are unable to pick up away wins for the rest of the season. Get a win at United and this point really should be enough to get us top 4. As much as the refs fucked us over, they have been doing that for years. What’s new. We have ourselves to blame. Why has Auba been taking pens. I’m no football genius but it’s obvious to me he isn’t the man you want taking pens. Should have been Mkhi. Even… Read more »

Bamford10

Benny

Yeah, again, you are stating that like it’s an objective fact. It isn’t. Who did that analysis? Might different people have reached different decisions? Further, to gambon’s point, when you change a call in a match, every moment in that match that followed that moment would be different. Therefore you can never say how that match would’ve ended. All you can go with is who was the best team on balance, and on that there is no question: Leicester were the best team on balance that season. I mean no offense, but your claim is some Untold shit, IMO.

TR7

City will win the league, I thought they were the favorites even when they were 10 points behind. Liverpool attacking players lack poise with ball at their feet. Mane and Salah together make too many poor touches/bad decisions to enable Liverpool get over the line. In City, Bernardo, KDB, David Silva and Aguero are precise with their touches, make better decisions and loose the ball less frequently. Van Djik alone has kept Liverpool in the title race but it won’t be enough in the end.

Salah has not hit a bad patch, rather he scoring 40 goals last season was a fluke. He is a dangerous player with his dribbling and pace but never looked like he was going to be a prolific goalscorer season in season out.

I wouldn’t mind getting in another player like sokrates, someone with experience who is a bit older, and cheaper but who can replace the very old kos. At the same time get in younger CBs with potential like holding and play them as back up or in the cup games. They can learn for a season or two and then slot into the main CB role when the current CBs get too old and then bring in more young CBs with potential and the cycle continues.
