Arsenal kicked off the new era in a painfully familiar fashion. A leaky defence, a second-rate performance against a top 6 side, star names under-performing, along with the customary zero points. Unai Emery witnessed first hand the brilliance of Manchester City and probably now realises how much work needs to be done to move Arsenal into the modern era of football Arsene Wenger steadfastly refused to acknowledge existed.
There was also a bit of a subplot with Arteta sitting in the opposition dugout, he was the frontrunner for the Arsenal job until Gazidis lost his nerve. The big hugs from Pep after the second goal hinted that our excaptain may have been given an outsized role in deciding what the plan was going to be for the afternoon (like he was last year).
Whoever concocted the strategy, it worked. Manchester City blitzed us from wide positions, Mahrez and Sterling causing us all sorts of problems, with Mendy and Walker showing off their raw power and pace. Our defence looked pedestrian at times, AMN really suffering before going off with an injury after a collision with a full speed Kyle Walker.
Their goals were standard Arsenal switch off moments. For the first, a poor Bellerin clearance found Mendy who often took up central positions, Sterling ghosted Bellerin, shrugged off Guendouzi and slammed his shot past Cech who didn’t dive. The second goal was classic Arsenal, Mendy powered the ball up the park, played a one-two with Sterling, crossed low into space in front of our extremely deep defence, Xhaka was pondering, no one in our defence reacted, Bernado Silva was first to it and rocketed his chance into the top corner.
We had some good moments in the game, but as with preseason, our transitions to attack were generally quite poor. Ourdefence looked extremely uncomfortable on the ball, Petr Cech was comical at times, nearly passing into his own net at one point. Flabbergasting that the coach wants to play with a keeper regista, but opted for Cech, who I absolutely refuse to believe has been dropping passes like peak Zidane in training. With his hands, he was excellent all game, he made some wonderful saves. However, in the new era, the keeper is expected to play with his feet. He is not the guy you want breaking the lines. It’ll be very interesting to see how long Emery sticks with that decision.
It didn’t help that we had nothing performances from Ramsey, Ozil, Auba and Mikki. Our attackers looked like they’d never played together, Ozil was particularly depressing to watch. His touch was poor, his passing was unusually shite and he just looked disinterested. Ramsey couldn’t find a way into the game either, a very bland performance for someone chasing a deal (or the exit door).
Aubamayang is an incredible finisher, but he lacks the all-round impact a striker like, dare I say it, Giroud can offer you by bringing players into the game with great hold up play. I’m not crying for Giroud by the way, I’m merely pointing out that Emery has to find a way to work Auba work in big games like that.
Still, on the positive side of things, the manager was scheming during the game about how to make us better in the second half. He subbed Ramsey on 54, a real power move if he wasn’t injured. Lacazette gave us some hope with two chances early on, one of his half-volley grazing just wide.
I thought Lichtsteiner was a real asset when he came on. He got forward a lot, he was rugged in defence and he really does bring an air of nasty to our team. What a competitor he is.
Guendouzi had a good game. I mean, he made a lot of expected rookie mistakes, but as everyone keeps saying, he never shied away. He demands the ball all the time, and despite being at fault for the first goal and nearly gifting them a second when he set Aguerro free, he was a bright spark out there on the pitch. Give me him in midfield over Xhaka every game. Telling that our best player made two shocking errors and I’m pleased.
Another telling moment was Xhaka being subbed off for a defensive midfielder when we were trailing. The Swiss was typically average. He landed a yellow card because he’s so fucking slow, he gifted them possession and he just generally looked off the pace against an aggressive Manchester City. Moving forward, he can’t be starting. He’s one of the most average players I’ve witnessed over the years, literally no redeeming qualities in a league that demands physical presence. He is a liability against anyone that presses him, and teams like Liverpool, Spurs, Chelsea and City will all know that.
So what have we learnt? Not a lot. We knew this was going to be a tough season, and we knew it was highly unlikely we’d be a match for the second greatest team to grace the Premier League. We won’t play teams that good every week, and by the time we play them next year, it’ll be a different story. The players will have adopted Emery’s ideas, the defence will feel more comfortable playing the ball out the back and you’d have to hope the manager will have found his true starting 11.
The big questions for me:
Are Emery’s ideas that good? Can he compete with the like of Pep, Sarri, Klopp and Pochettino? All masters of their various offerings. Another big question is how the players will react to defeat.
How enthused will they be about the new setup? The double sessions? Being shouted at like never before, but the same things happening on the pitch…
How long will it take to see progress, and how long will the fans roll with it? For me, we have to be real. It took Pep a year with a blank chequebook. It took Klopp a year, and his path is much more aligned with the challenges we face. So whatever you’re thinking now, you have to park it for at least that long.
Top 4 is the goal, it’s going to be tough because there are 7 very good teams this season.
Anyway, don’t be down in the dumps, today was the short-term cost of progress, this will get better as the year goes on, more joy to come (hopefully).

I liked that moment in the first half when a few players went to Emery for instructions. The trouble with such a passionate managerial style is that it can cause a manager-player stand-off, but in that moment I thought they were warming to him. Cech also mentioned in the post-match interview how we was enjoying the changes.
Agreed on everything else. Guendouzi > Xhaka.

And to those championing Auba up front alone, we need both our strikers on the field to ease in our transition into the new system.

It was certainly an interesting game, some really disappointing moments in the game and Cech being a bit comical with the ball at his feet.
Granit really cannot be starting for us and a Torriera / Guendouzi CM can have some big positives.
Would much rather start with Laca in the team as it looked like he had a bit of fight and something to prove.
Let Ramsey/Iwobi/Mhiki/Welbeck/whoever fight for that last spot.

All the new signings were terrific and there was a good air on the team. Clearly they were not ready to knock out the champions but i can see progres in the future. The downside was to see xhaka have a usually poor match. I just cant see him as a starter if we are to improve as a team. The same goes for Ramsey and cech. Very good players in some aspects but they have weaknesses that really impact negatively the attacking side of the game. I get it, it is the 1st game against the best team but what worries me is the lack of pace and lack of width. We are desperate for a wide player or 2 if we persist in playing 10’s out wide we are fucked.
Pedro I was at the game yesterday. There were a number of problems: 1. Too many back passes to Cech who was expected to pass the ball out of defence like the eleventh outfield player. This may be new trend in football, but Cech is not suited to that role. 2. Our full backs and midfield did not play well and were constantly exposed from flanks by Man City fullbacks and Mahrez. I’m glad it was Man City for our 1st game. It highlighted the gulf between the teams and the amount of work needed to get this club back to competing. People need to manage their expectations, 5th would be a good achievement this season as it would signal some progress albeit a worthless one.
Everything was ok for first match. Xhaka and Ramsey have to go. They just dont fit here. Even worse is seeing Ozil and Ramsey on the pitch together. Its like when Ozil has the ball we at least expect some killer pass. When Ramsey get it i expect back pass or nowhere. Xhaka was atrocius. Guendouzi is twice the player he is allready and hes a kid.
Cech did well. He had his off moments. I don’t like the idea where keepers are supposed to be good with their feet. They are to be good with their hands first before feet.
Most of the sweeper keepers are mostly average except a few.
The passion in the response by Arsenal fans to the mocking by the City supporters shows how bad things have become at the Emirates.

First game done and dusted, I was surprised with the 11 yesterday and it contributed to us losing. Laca should have started and Guendozi shouldn’t have. AMN was roasted all game before he was saved by his injury. Not a defender. Ozil was awful. Even his passes were off. Don’t know what happened there but I am sure it has something to do with how Ramsey player yesterday. Considering that August is holiday season the stadium was surprisingly full.
Overall most spectators around me were realistic about the team’s prospects
this season and did not expect too much.
The response to Man City fans was fairly measured. Let’s not get carried away
with what was said. It was banter and nothing else and fairly good humoured and not to be taken seriously.
Emery will have discovered from this game the shortcomings of our squad/team. Hopefully he will learn very quickly how to address the problems.
Despite the mistakes with the ball at his feet, Cech made some good saves and kept the scoreline down. If Cech is going to be the no.1 keeper, playing out from the back, and playing the ball back to the keeper regularly isn’t suitable. If we’re going to persist with that, Leno looks more comfortable with the ball at his feet. Xhaka really has no place in the first 11. There were people leaving after the 2nd goal yesterday in the stadium. There’s no way to describe some of AFC’s fan base.
Based on last match, if we persist with Guendouzi and don’t give him time to learn and get used to things we will be worse off.
I know he’s still shinny and new in the eyes of le grove supporters but he’s not ready. He’s erratic and off the ball game is bad. Xhaka had a more stable game apart from his one misplaced pass and when he was caught in possession.
Moving forward I think Torr is a sure starter. I would pick between Xhaka, Ramsey and Neny to partner him and then set Ozil free in the 10.

VAR could have made a difference.. 60th minute… Xhaka played a ball through to Lichsteiner , ozil touched it and the lino gave Lichsteiner offside despite him being behind the ball and stones playing him on side.. Following that game and the unavailing international interval theres games against Cardiff, Newcastle, Everton, Watford, Fulham. Leicester and Crystal Palace. The one thing that Xhaka can do, which is the risk-free pass to elevate his pass completion stats, he got beat out by Matteo in that regard too. Everyone knows that Matteo is still raw, but he shows promise and didn’t shy away from the game. I wish our more senior players had half that bottle yesterday.

But by all means focus on Xhaka getting dispossessed and making sloppy passes that amounted to nothing but turnovers of possession.
Disappointed but not disheartened. Lichtsteiner is a beast! Reminded me of Keown back in the day. Torreira and Leno need to start next game. Laca and Auba need to play more together.

I watched the game for a full 90 and i am struggling to remember one defensive contribution from Xhaka. A manager will also know it will be stupid to drop a player without reason. Cech, since, Emery came in might not have done anything to be dropped for Leno.
Arsene made that mistake a lot of times and we lost Schezy and Ospina because of it. Chelsea lost Cech because of it and the stupid keeper they wanted to please made a hatful of errors and has already buggered off.

Girona and the New york team needed a new manager this season. I am surprised the great Arteta was not considered, probably satisfied masterminding victories against Arsenal and receiving hugs and kisses.
Guendouzi was placed in the position of playing with two senior midfielders. The first one deserted his posy and was the CF in the first half. The second one was making unchallenged errors and trying to creat assists for the opposition by the 10th minute. Other than that, all Xhaka did was go to the “safe” mode of “spraying” 5 yard sideways. Thats’sexactly what you call being thrown into the deep end of the pool. Of course he made errors. Mind reader. I said the 11 was off. Guendouzi was a part of the reason. He’s too green and not ready. I also made other points. Look and I said it’s my opinion.
You will start with Guendouzi, I rather he doesnt start. But to paint Guen as a better player and had a better game than Xhaka yesterday is joke worthy. Xhaka ain’t ideal but neither is Guendouzi ATM.

Judging by Emery’s comments in his post match presser Leno will again not be lining up against Chelsea.
Emery said Leno will have to wait and is clearly seen as reserve at this point.

It is just as most everyone thought, the beginning to a long road to recovery. This is going to take years.
