Bernd Leno lands, 2 medicals booked today, one leaves for West Ham

So it appears the summer transfer dealings are coming to a close. Arsenal are welcoming medicals for Matteo Guendouzi and Lucas Torreira. That’s two DMs, one for now, with the other pegged for future greatness. Here’s a little snippet about the Frenchman, who comes with discipline issues.

On the pitch, Guendouzi’s lanky frame and floppy hairstyle have drawn comparisons to Adrien Rabiot, and while that seems overly simplistic, there are some similarities to the two. Not really comfortable as a six, but not so skilful on the ball or direct enough to be used as a relayeur, Guendouzi instead relies on a lovely range of passing to affect play. At Lorient, this often manifested itself as balls played out to the flanks, or over the top, allowing him to play almost as a regista, dictating play on the counter whilst another midfielder retained the responsibility of breaking up the opposition’s play.

Despite not having the dribbling acumen of Rabiot, Guendouzi has shown flashes of realizing how to use his frame when in possession. Not particularly quick, he instead relies on a wiry strength to retain possession, using his long limbs to shield against opponents. That said, this same lanky aspect of his build can make him a bit lazy or prone to fouling when defending, as he is wont to leave a foot in or be somewhat lazy with his positioning in hoping to rely on his size, exemplified by a horror challenge against Auxerre last season.  Too, while his inventiveness in terms of a range of passing is impressive, he can also be overly ambitious or seem to lack much in the way of a rapport with his teammates.

What a summer.

Most of the issues appear to have been addressed outside the new contract we’re hoping will head the way of Aaron Ramsey.

In 6 months, we’ve mostly rebuilt the core of the squad.

We’ve ripped out a fair chunk of the dross.

We’ve seen an elevation of some very promising young talents.

We’ve reshaped the coaching staff.

We’ve changed the manager.

We’re as ready as we’ve ever been to tackle the new season.

Everyone lands a fresh chance. Duff players might come good, key players might be relegated to the bench, the old style will certainly be canned, a new era for Arsenal is taking shape.

I’m not dreading the start of the new season. No one is battling to justify why we’ve only signed a Costa Rican 19 year old with a month until the start of the new season. No one is wondering why our manager is commentating at the World Cup. No one is under any confusion about what the new regime is trying to do the squad.

You don’t need to pick through a wreckage to retrofit a positive spin.

It feels good. From a writing perspective, it’s hard to know where to head. We’re all buckling up for a ride, unsure of the destination for once.

Bernd Leno has arrived at Colney, the club have announced he’ll be taking over the famous number 19 shirt for the new season. In his Arsenal.com interview, it’s clear his English is up to scratch, he also knows a lot about the club. He mentioned Thierry Henry, Highbury, and Alex Hleb who used to pay for Stuttgart.

I’m very happy we’ve managed to bring in a keeper. He’s come with quite a hefty price tag for a keeper many said lost his way last season, but hopefully there’s a plan for him and we’ve brought him in because of specific skills we hope to bake into the way we play. My biggest gripe about Petr Cech is his lack of ability to play with intelligence out the back. The hoof has been the standard distribution method for years. To have a keeper that can break the lines with clever passing will add a different dimension to our game, it’ll also be good to have someone who can act as an auxiliary sweeper when needed.

Outside that, we need a keeper who can pull off stunning saves. We haven’t had a keeper who can do miraculous things since Fabianski. The Polish keeper had that part of his game sussed, just a shame that’d come with horrendous errors. He was a good keeper though, gone too early in my opinion. But hey, I’ll take a steely German manning the goal for the foreseeable.

Jack Wilshere made it official and joined West Ham. The most predictable transfer of the summer. Content here.

I think that’s about all I have for the day?

ENGLAND on Wednesday. On that, can you imagine being the guy that got naked in the bar and has a snap of his arse flying around the world on a Monday morning? How embarrassing. I’m dying just typing this. That is why I NEVER get naked at the pub, even after a strong win.

No…… Creating 7 chances v s korea is dreadful…

No goals no assists and two defeats in the games he played in. Pretty good alright

PessimisticPat

Number 1 he has to be a good humanitarian.
2, I think lot’s of cuddles for supporters who are cold.
3, maybe he can help direct traffic after the match. That would be a big help cos getting out of London can be a real bitch
4, probably could do with some more homeless shelters in the area
5,I guess as long as he does all of the above he doesn’t have to do anything but just finish top 4 for 9 years.trophies don’t matter. Am I right

I don’t want the manager to compete with Mother ‘bloody’ Teresa for a sainthood – I want him to win football matches.

I couldn’t give a shit if he saved the kids in a cave, achieved peace in the Middle East and invented a machine that removed all plastic from the oceans. I want him to win football matches.

Clearly those 7 chances created weren’t all that good otherwise you’d imagine one would have been scored. It’s a pointless stat really. I mean Mesut created just a couple more chances than Pascal Gross last season and he’s not nearly considered the best number 10 in the world.

Coach 15

Though firmly in the he had to go camp, can I just remind people that Arsenal were never really a team that contended for the title. This 14 years since we last won it,I had to wait 18 years to see a GG team achieve the feat. And that was something I never thought possible watching arsenal through the mid 70’s through to that day in May. Before then it was one FA cup win to shout about. Wenger certainly upheld humanitarian values, he kept on a bunch of under-performing yes men around him on big salaries.
Few others would have been so benevolent to the likes of Gerry Peyton and Tony Colbert.
I admire his tolerance for his mates who run a slave state where workers die building stadia. Then, there is his stated admiration for that well known humanitarian, Stan Kroenke.
The club clearly rate humanitarian values having kept Wenger for so long, I am sure they are scouting the next Mother Teresa should Unai Emery fail.

Correct

We also went 18 years without a title from 1953-71 so going by that reckoning put a bet on it being 2022 before we win it again.

Emiratesstroller

I believe that following the departure of Wenger the club’s new management have put together a squad of players who will be hopefully “competitive” next season. I don’t think that we are at the point where we will win the League Title next season, but I would hope that we could manage a top 4 finish and therefore qualify for Champions League. Arsenal’s major difficulty will be that we are competing in Europa League on Thursdays and the EPL on Sundays. That leaves very little recovery time and the scheduling of matches by Sky and BT last season did not… Read more »

Wenger’s failings have been well recorded over several years and the club’s mistake was to hold onto him well beyond his sell by date.

No-one disputes that he was a well respected manager for much of his career,
but he did not merit staying at the club for over 20 years.

That was unhealthy and led to the club’s decline in recent times.

PessimisticPat

The problem with the chance created star is that the following all count as the same thing

a 2 yard pass to an open goal,
a 60 yard punt upfield leading to a header,
a square midfield pass 30 yards out to a team mate who has a shot on target,
and a perfectly weighted through ball that splits the defence in two leading to a shot.

Practically useless when determining contribution in any specific way unless you watch the match back through again with stats and notes available.

If Trippier crosses ten times into the box it would be 5/6 times so why shouldn’t someone who is good at his trade be recognised. Reiss Nelson has serious ability.

He was voted the best U23 league player last season.

He has also scored 13 in 23 for England youth teams.

We have to give him opportunities, otherwise we may as well just shut down the academy.

The problem is Wenger completely lost it in recent years, and didnt know how to manage him,

He played him mainly at right wing back, which is ridiculous.

Gnabry was a warning. He was completely misjudged by Wenger, he could have been the winger that was supplying this side. .. and would have cost us nothing.

By the time he started to show his true potential, Wenger was too late and he lost him to the Bundesliga.

In the 2004-2005 season Arturo Lupoli had 27 goals in 32 appearances at reserve level too. We all know how that one panned out.

Reiss Nelson has shown absolutely nothing in all the appearances he has made at senior level. No one is saying he should be sold, all i am saying is we should stop planning with him in the first team and rather look for a loan move for him where he actually gets to play

Do you think goals scored stat is flawed

Goals scored actually counts for something as does the assist stat count for something. Chances created account for fuck all. If Ozil were to create a thousand chances in the season but ends up with only 4 goals and 8 assists does that mean the googlely eyed fucker had a great season? But he only contributed to 12 goals. It’s a deceptive pointless stats that his fanboys trot out every time he’s criticized for being a moist blanket

Leftsidesanch

the “ITKS” seem to think that we will go after Dembele this window, or Dybala based on some twitter talks. Dembele one seems more believable as we need someone on the flanks.

Dybala, would play in place of Ozil (can’t see this one happening), but that being said – Juve would need to balance books if they manage to get the deal over the line for CR7.

Not sure either would happen, but thats just the pessimist within speaking.

Pierre Above you say “if Ozil had assisted twice against Korea and only created two chances, would he have had a good game? The answer is no.” The answer is probably yes. Used to be firmly in the Ozil camp when it came to the Ozil v Erikson debate but 41 goals and 48 assists in 171 games for Spurs for me puts it to bed. Ozil 42 million pounds far more expensive with significantly less goals and only 2 more assists than Erikson. Do the math

Leftsidesanch

Would anyone take Zaha, he’s apparently rejected new terms at CP?

Marko

Another difference between the two if Erikson was on the market or nearly ran down his contract you better believe someone would be in for him. Ozil on the other hand ran his contract down to 6 months and not one single club bid for him.

Cesc Appeal

Lots of rumours suddenly that Arsenal are working on one massive signing but there will be a lot of outgoings to fund it, lots of fringe players sold.

Interesting times ahead.

Zfree

Also, have you ever played competitive sport? I’m sure Ozil himself would feel he had a much better performance with two chances created, two assists, and the team winning compared to 7 chances created.

He might think “well it was a decent effort, I played pretty well, didn’t have any huge fuck ups and thought we had some good play that I was involved in but it wasn’t enough clearly, we didn’t score and are going home.”

Pierre

Marko
Thanks for that link earlier, it actually confirmed what I was saying regarding özil and Sanchez work rate… Thanks again.

Copied from the link that marko kindly gave us.

” is also an interesting comparison. The Chilean is frequently lauded for his work rate and off-the-ball industry, but the tracking data shows he ran an average of 1.5km less than Ozil per 90 minutes last season. Perhaps Wenger has a point about his body language after all.

gonsterous

im definitely one of the ozil supporters. close control, vision, skill, dribbling, passing. He has it all. Just needs to be more influential like cesc was. Maybe emery can bring it out of him. Cesc played as CM though, and ozil is a CAM. maybe a bit of defending in the opposition half or pick up a tactical yellow card from time to time. But when he and sanchez played, they looked for each other.

Also, I think we should keep Perez this season and sell welbz.

Fabinho, Keita, Oxlade is their midfield, they’ve got Salah, Firmino, Mane as a front line. Who do they drop? Oxlade and play Dybala behind the front line? Firmino and play him as the ST? They could do those things but it then presents problems to Klopp in terms of squad management.
