Sokratis lands + Ramsey starts training, but where’s the deal?

by .

1123x632_Sokratis

No sooner had I posted yesterday, than the announcement that Sokratis had landed as our brand spanking new defender.

What a day.

The 29-year-old has come in from Dortmund for £16m. He’ll bring leadership, fear, and prison yard bully-boy tactics to the dressing room. He’s so scary, he already has Aubameyang calling him Papa online. Total and utter dominance of other men is quite the skill.

I’d still quite like to see another young centre-back coming in. Someone with a touch more experience than Holding and Chambers. I’m not sure where the deal for Soyoncu has gone, but you’d imagine after the retirement of Per Mertesacker and the horrible injury of Koscielny, it’ll be something that’s top of mind.

I was also mulling over the new deals for Chambers and Xhaka. I know there’s a lot of love in the fanbase for both, but I’ve always been under the impression that they’re lacking in the pace department. Odd deals, but I guess you just have to trust in the new process.

The deal for Torreira has yet to happen, but I guess with Uraguay still firmly in the World Cup, it’ll be at least another week.

Mesut Ozil has finally picked up the number 10 of Jack Wilshere, which means he’s certainly playing an important role next season.

The other deal that’s still on the table is the Aaron Ramsey one. We’re pushing into ‘OH GOD NO PLEEEEASE SIGN DA TING’… you’d have to imagine there’s a deadline on this. No way we can let him head into the last year of his deal. According to rumour, he’s been rejecting deals like bad swipes on Tinder. As I mentioned before, his agent will be pushing for Ozil like money, because why not? He’s the best performer at the club. However, you can see it from the clubs perspective. You can’t level out that sort of money on a player who goes missing with injury… that said, you have Mesut who goes missing in big games and on random holidays when the going gets tough.

Tough times.

At least we know he’ll be floated out the back door if he doesn’t decide to stay on. We’re in a ruthless regime now. Though I do wonder what you do if he says he doesn’t want to leave? Do you threaten him with U23 football all year? That’d be mean. Let’s see where this goes, I don’t like the ‘he’s waiting to see what the squad looks like’ banter.

England is up a bit later this afternoon. We saw Belgium beat Japan after going 2-0 down. A lot of talk of Belgium being frauds, but the boys stepped up in the end and kept the flicker of the golden generation dream World Cup win alive. I love how the internet has rallied against people calling out Lukaku for lacking intelligence. It’s amusing to now watch it go the other way, people clamouring to be the first to congratulate him on intelligently passing the ball 3 yards into space. It was a lovely dummy for the final goal yesterday, but the genius post-rationalization commenatary is a bit much.

I also have to say, regardless of the ‘I need to be offended’ brigade online, the idea that it’s now a bit racist to comment on a player’s physical stature or attributes is next level. Sport, literally the one living in the world where being a genetic freak is exactly what lands you big dollars, is largely down to your power and pace. You think Per Mertesacker is making £90k a week if he’s 5ft5? You think Aaron Ramsey is anywhere near the Premier League without the engine he has?

I appreciate there are levels to this, and it’s certainly nuanced, but I think we lose our damn minds sometimes.

Right, England up in 4 hours, see you in the comments!

I reckon we sell auba and laca to fund Ronaldo transfer
(but someone told me that we’re gonna have to sell, in fact, the whole squad + the stadium, so it’s definitely a big f*ucking NO!!)

gambon

“my opinion and I may be wrong but I don’t see Harry Kane as world class.”

104 goals in the last 3 seasons, come off it.

Akilan

Raptora,
It looks like Real are trying to offload Ronaldo. Bale is staying it seems. If that is the case he will have to leave. Juventus may not be able to afford him, but someone might.(Bayern, manutd)

If we were a CL club, dare I say we could have been a decent shout as well.

HighburyLegend

For that, we must get back to the good old days of the “I almost signed list”.

Akilan

Highbury,
The rumoured transfer fee is 120m Euros, which roughly translates to 106m pounds. Sell Ramsey,
and lacazette, we should be able to cover him. Its his wages that’ll be a problem. Even that can be managed.

It’s actually convincing him to join an Europa league club. No way he goes from winning the cl to scrapping for a cl spot.

Interesting to see the training video Arsenal released yesterday.

The first time in years and years that ive seen Energy, Noise and Demands being made of players on the training ground.

The other thing that surprised me was seeing Carl Jenkinson back at the club and happy to see Lucas Perez back in training, one of many players that deserved more game time but were snubbed by Wenger.

Akilan

Gambon,
33 years old or not, he’s still the best/2nd best player in the world.

And physically speaking, he’s still better than many top players at their prime. I bet he still runs more than 10km a game. Never gets injured.

Just signing him takes us from contenders/outsiders for top 4 to one of the favourites for the title.

Anyway he won’t come to us. Juventus lucked out again. If they sign him, they may actually win the big ears.

Funny that some bloke on the internet see the potential spending of 100M on Ronaldo as ‘madness’ while top professionals running the club business for long are currently sitting with Ronnie’s agent in an attempt to trash out a deal..eh I quite know whose likely to be talking shite here, don’t i Juventus have wiped the floor with all domestic trophies in Italy but continues to be severe bottlers in the CL,seems they see CR7 has a player even with his best years seemingly behind as someone who could potentially hand them that elusive trophy hence y it could be… Read more »

‘Spending £100m on a 33 year old Ronaldo is absolute madness.’ Ronaldo as it is, will instantly become the best player in the EPL and score something like 30 goals in the EPL alone. Guy is a beast. People thought that a 35 yo Ibra would be a failure, Ronaldo is much, much better player than the Swede. He will score twice as much as say Lukaku if Manure get him. In all honesty why would he go to Juve if Manure would always want him and he would want them back?! Also gambon, you know that some players make… Read more »

Yes there are material changes to staff in First Team Squad and also in Academy. That was frankly long overdue.

The one position which has not been replaced sofar is that of Colin Lewin. One
assumes that he will be replaced before start of season as his role in medical team is critical.

Ah, the “he’ll sell 100m worth of shirts, so the buying club will make their money back” myth.

That’s not how shirt sales work.

Akilan

Manure have a stacked squad. They are trying to offload Martial. Lukaku & Sanchez have been there for 1 season or less and they’re not getting offloaded. Then there is the Mou factor. Ronaldo and Mou don’t get along and may even hate each other. Liverpool, city and spurs have stacked squads and have to offload players who performed magnificently in Mane, Sane & son, which may disrupt their squad. Only Arsenal and Chelsea have a place in their starting XI for Ronaldo. But we lack the cl and pulling power to interest Ronaldo. Bayern have their fair share of… Read more »

Re the merchandise sales point, remember that clubs make virtually nothing from shirt sales (other than those sold through their club shops). The agreements with kit manufacturers are licensing deals, where the licensee buys the rights to produce and sell kits, and reap any profits. You think Nike, Adidas etc are paying a club £50m+ for an annual licence fee and then sharing revenue / profits? No chance. Any benefit would be in being able to negotiate higher future kit licensing deals on the back of a raised profile, but if you’re buying a player who’s nearly 34, can you… Read more »

Every year we hear the ‘Ronaldo to leave Madrid’ stories and it never happens. Why do you reckon it’ll be any different this time around?

raptora

Jamie, please read my comment again though. I said merchandise as a whole, not shirts alone. Even though clubs like Real M, Barcelona and Manure can anually realistically sell say 1.5 – 2 million shirts and make a profit of around 15 € a shirt. That is close to 30m € per year year. According to Marca, 40% out of Real Madrid’s shirts were Ronaldo’s. That’s more than 10m € from shirts alone. It’s not bad tbh. Then you add all the ad contracts which will surely rise if you have Ronaldo in your team. It adds pretty significantly imo.… Read more »

Jamie

raptora,

With respect, your understanding of merchandising is deeply flawed.

For starters, you don’t need to buy a ‘Ronaldo’ shirt, you can buy a blank one and add whatever letters you choose to the back of it, paying by the letter.

The sponsors take the lion’s share of merchandising revenue. Your numbers are way, way off in terms of what clubs receive from sales.

raptora

Well I used this https://www.quora.com/Is-it-true-that-Real-Madrid-made-%C2%A380-million-back-on-Ronaldos-transfer-fee-by-just-selling-his-shirts for info and it says that 8 years ago clubs were making 12 € a shirt. Regardless of shirts though, you’ve got to put the fans added in perspective as well though. Those kids that might become say Arsenal fans because of a flair player, and Ronaldo is one for sure, could be fans for their whole lives, add their kids to the equation and you’ll surely see it that a 100m for a player like Ronaldo at 33 yo is a top deal for any “top” team. Ronaldo would pick where to go since… Read more »

For all the negativity about Arsenal and its players, which are regularly posted on Le Grove the club has made significant and strategic changes to the squad since January. Sofar we have recruited 6 new players plus the anticipated arrival of Torreira. In January we recruited Aubameyang, Mkhitaryan and Mavropanos. The first two are almost certainly starting X1 players. Since the opening of transfer window we have recruited a starting eleven goalkeeper in Leno, centre back in Sokratis and a back up right back in Lichsteiner. Forget the idea of Ronaldo. We are not going to spend the transfer fee and financial package on a 33 year old.

If you want to blow your entire transfer budget on a single player then you go
after someone like Mbappe. Sadly it would take Arsenal three summer transfer windows to afford him without buying anyone else.

Jamie

Raptora,

I take your point about the ‘value’ of signing marquee players, but the direct revenue clubs receive from merchandising (even over a prolonged period) is negligible compared to the the kinds of transfer fees we’re seeing these days.

Elmo summed it up nicely above.

raptora

ES,
Obviously that Ronaldo to Arsenal wouldn’t happen. Mostly because the player would want a close to guaranteed on the pitch success. We look pretty far from that definition.

From a financial point, I’m pretty sure that we can afford him with the couple of sales. Regardless it’s never going to happen so no need to keep talking about it.

Atm I’m pretty sure that Ronaldo will stay in Madrid because we’ve already seen this movie before.

TonyD

My 9 year old son wanted a Laca shirt and CR7 boots I had to have brought over from the UK. So it’s not just shirts. My son also read online something about Ronaldo shin pads and asked me to find out about them. Not sure how image rights work in sport but I know players want a % in their contracts. I’d be surprised if a buying club doesn’t get anything of a players image rights, such as posters and DVDs. There is a lot of branding going on with so many products these days. I’d still maintain that… Read more »

I doubt that even the Agnelli family are going to invest in Ronaldo. He is an
exceptional player, but at 33 with a very limited time frame.

Such players make only sense if you are paying their financial package on
short term contract without paying a transfer fee as well.

I don’t see any major club in Europe spending £80-100 Million transfer fee for
this player.

However I agree the hope we’d have of landing Ronaldo are Bob & none.

Jamie

Similar to raptora, and respectfully, you’re conflating merchandising with other performance-related revenue, either from competition prize money, to sponsorship.

Read through some Swiss Ramble articles about the merchandising revenue of the top clubs.

This Ronaldo story is crazy. Soon it will become same as Bayern Robbery story. Glimpses of briliance throughout season but no consistency. Good work on RM pr if they sell him now 100+ mil.

raptora

Honestly if Ronaldo is going anywhere PSG makes perfect sense as well as Manure.

Real want Neymar so a switch involving Real paying good money on top would be ideal for both teams.

PSG get a player of Ronaldo’s stature in their seek to build a bigger fanbase while balancing their financial fairplay budget. For a Neymar who is supposedly seeking the move to Real anyways.

Ivan

Raptora – this is most sensible scenario i read about Ronaldo transfer.

Did any of you lot watch the Uruguay match? Ronaldo was useless, he looked exhausted in the 2nd half.

He might score goals but he’s too old to handle the premier league.

Stroller In general, I’d agree. Juve are a savvy club and £100m for a 33.5 year old doesn’t make sense for a club that has to base their CL competitiveness on outperforming the spendthrift moneybags clubs in the transfer window. In this case, though, Juve have been desperately trying to get over the line and win the CL for a number of years; they consider themselves to have a mature, stacked team and Allegri is hanging around purely for the CL. Tennis players are so much fitter than a footballer. Some matches can go on for upwards of four/five hours. The majority of football matches last 90 mins with a max of two hours.

Let’s remember that a tennis player is one v one. No places to hide when tired.

To suggest that a runner only runs competitively twice a year means you don’t watch athletics. They run, throw, jump etc pretty much all year. They have their own league.

Before Bayern Munich and Pool on the semis and final where he didn’t score he was in a run of 25 goals in 15 games in the UCL not scoring in 1 of the 15 games. He is not getting younger and I don’t doubt that he is not the same Ronaldo as before because he obviously changed his style, but those stats are for UCL group stages and KO rounds from the last year or so. If he remains healthy I know who I would put my money for top goalscorer in the EPL if he was to come.
