I support Edu and the clubs business, but I think Sociedad is playing us like a violin.

They have us bidding 30m for a 28yr old with a year left on his contract, when we all know they can't afford to let him walk for free in a year. No way.

They can't throw away 18 - 25m. The player and his agent should be stronger for the move. Him saying he doesn't mind staying is making it harder on us.

... and if Eddie isn't offloaded, we have failed because he doesn't fit in our team anymore. I would have taken 20m for him just to be over it. Loan him out if necessary because at least then he can prove his value. I don't want him taking up a bench spot from Nwaneri, Nelson, even Vieira who can create a goal out of nothing.

Incredible how many people are losing their shit over Eddies eventual fee. He will go for whatever the eventual auction value ends up at. He wasn’t good enough for us but will succeed at a smaller club. Wish him well and stop looking for blame as if a major catastrophe was occurring

To help people think clearly about the Eddie situation, this is not on Arteta. It's on Edu, Garlick and the other suits upstairs.

It's not within Arteta's brief to set valuation and negotiate player incoming and exits.

He signed off on letting Eddie leave, he's done his job. He hasn't played Eddie much so he's sent the club a message already.

They are letting Arteta down too. He's brought us close to the target and needs help to get us over the summit.

We obviously are close to some PSR target and we have to sell to buy, so Eddie staying means someone more suited to Arteta ball can't come in.

Expand full comment

There is no “situation” other than what you’re conjuring in your mind

Expand full comment

On the contrary, it's arteta that is making their jobs hard for them. When you have a player who you truly don't trust but pretend to value them and ask Edu to offer them hefty contracts. Few weeks down the line, you confine them almost permanently on the bench, run down their values almost to nothing, then turn to Edu to sell them so as to afford some shiny new players. People are so afraid of arteta that he is never wrong. It is Edu or the players always. How easy do you think edu's job would have been if he was working with klopp or pep?

Expand full comment

"When you have a player who you truly don't trust but pretend to value them "

Arteta has to talk them up though, to protect their values. His best speech about the player's qualities is when he doesn't bring them when the game is on the line. Everything else is PR fluff

He sanctioned the players exit, that speaks volumes. That is where his work ends. He has NOTHING to do with the outgoing negotiations. For incoming negotiations, his job is to make himself available to the player's questions about what their role is, he still doesn't negotiate contracts.

Expand full comment

He has everything do do with it. How easy would it have been for Edu to sell Ramsdale last season if arteta has opened up to him that he's not in his plan and not bother extending his contract thereby taking his wage to 120k. But no arteta's right and Edu is at fault. Now who is going to take a goalkeeper whose confidence is in tatters? Who is going to buy a striker who is not trusted by his manager to start in meaningless games? who is going to market a winger who sits on the bench while a waste of space like Vieira plays in his position?

Expand full comment

Edu is doing a thankless job at arsenal. He's done his best helping arteta sign as many players as possible that he requested. He has done well to convince as many as possible players arteta want him to extend their contracts. What else do you want from him? He is expected to market redundant players whose values have been completely eroded by being constantly ignored and left rotten on the bench. And worse still, he is expected to sell for some insane amount.

A couple of comments from readers in the Athletic article "Bournemouth agree €47m Evanilson deal with Porto" sums up this dilemma perfectly:

"Bournemouth dodged a bullet if that was their alternative. Nketiah would have sealed relegation."

"Nketiah hasn’t scored more than 5 goals in any of his 7 seasons in the league. No one wants to pay Arsenal 30m for this striker. Bournemouth dodged a bullet."

"He's an old fashioned poacher in the mold of Jermaine Defoe or Ian Wright. The reason nobody is that interested is because he doesn't fit into specific systems too easily"

Then this one sums it up spot on:

"Arsenal fans are bemoaning the fact that Bournemouth won't buy their dead weight."

Yeah, the common denominator is the low IQ of the posters.

Eddie hasn't played more than 1070 mins per season in the league either.

The fellas think that 5 goals in 1000 mins is bad (no pens) then sure.

The incredible Evanilson scored 11 non penalty goals in 2070 mins in the Portugal liga.

Expand full comment

I wasn't advocating that Evanilson was better than Eddie, just that Eddie is surplus for us and he needs to be shifted and all the clubs interested in a striker know that. Therefore they will not agree to Edu's valuation and his asking price for Eddie. End result we may be stuck with Eddie, only rinse and repeat in Jan's TW.

Expand full comment

I was on record as wanting to take the offer we had...and I worry we may not get a good fee for Eddie, or be stuck with him, and losing value.. but I don't think we are in as bad a situation overall as some gooners fear.

This Eddie situation is not great for a player we don't use much at all. But we're not in dire straits financially as some fear.

Expand full comment

We are so fucking bad at selling we must be sitting at the bottom of the list of clubs. Everyone in Europe knows Eddie is not wanted by AFC, therefore getting 30mil is delusional. Bournemouth is willing to spend on Evanilson a possible €37m plus an additional €10m in add-ons. They are willing to spend but we don't want Eddie and they decided they don't want Eddie because he is mediocre at best.

Mark my words Eddie will be on the bench this season or will go for a fee that is less then what Marseille offered. According to Arseblog, we have run heavy losses for the past 4 years and are also running a loss so far this summer. Merino will not come to AFC unless we sell someone, this is according to Ornstein.

What a mess our sales department has shown for the past many years. Eddie was leaving on a free but to protect his value we offered him a larger contract. How has that protecting his value worked out so far?

I must have finally matured slightly as the transfer window being quiet hasn’t bothered me whatsoever. I am just looking forward to the actual football starting again.

With regard to Nketiah, if there are no takers then I’ve got no issue with him staying as back up or 2nd back up. His wages can’t be changed so no use whinging about that. He has proven he can score goals for us when needed.

If we secure Merino then I’d like to see us add another wide forward who is pacy and a trickster. If not we still have the squad to compete in my view.

As long as they are good enough it would be great to see more academy players in and around the match day squad this season and gaining significant minutes.

Eddie is like those actors/actresses that stick to one role in a TV series until they get permanently defined by that role.

I realized there was something wrong when he wasn't actively agitating to leave to rescue his career. He is 25 years old now, no longer a child.

He needs to desperately leave for his own good to make a name for himself and create some memories to look back on.

" As you can see, Arteta's instilled the "beating City is impossible" idea into our squad...

The reality?

City dropped points in more than 1/4 games (10/38 games).

Dropped over a 1/5 of their points.

Anyone who thinks that this is insurmountable shouldn't be in the job."
