Reports been popping off in the last few days about Atletico Madrid starting a mission with one clear goal - bring Thomas Partey back to their club.
We should also be on a mission - keep an unbelievable player that in addition to his unmatched in-possession quality, one that is virtually irreplaceable in world football, he showed he's got the running to complement that as well.
Partey and Rice are a perfect pair - the brain of Partey and the legs of Rice. When they are both in good form, they are unstoppable. And so is Arsenal.
Add MLS to the equation with his bundles of energy and carry potential, Partey's finesse and precision passing between the lines is the ingredient we'll suffer to replace.
Partey is already here. He's having a phenomenal season. We won't have to spend a dime in replacement. Not extending him would be self sabotage.
2. There is still the back ground issue and Arsenal might look like crooks if it comes back again so they are protecting themselves against that.
3. The fitness run he is on has been the exception rather than the norm.
I know I have given him a hard time for being poor at times in defensive transitions but he has been absolutely class the rest of the time. And Zubimendi won't be better (especially on the ball, no one is including Rodri imo), but he would be less of a risk. It isn't just the 50m fee. he would be a long term replacement at his age, definitely less wages (half), and he has been consisitently available for the past few years.
I think the club are going to look at it from a risk/reward point of view.
On Partey, the fee is a plus because he would be free. The back ground issue is a negative and a big risk and might tarnish your image plus leave you short in the middle of the season if you have to stop playing him like Mendy or Greenwood. Fitness is on the balance now because of his fitness run but there is also the age. The wages are huge and that is a negative. So they are going to rip the bandaid off now rather than later. You would still have to replace him in a year or two.
2. is speculating so I won't comment on it although it could be playing a part in our decision but if it was that bad, I would have expected us to have sold him long time ago and also, a club with values like ours with a manager with integrity like Arteta, I doubt they would have kept played him.
3. Before Arsenal he was unbreakable. Last winter he finally had and I quote "a surgery to cure a long-term thigh problem" and since then he's been reborn.
Wages aren't gonna be too different if you ask me. Daily Mail says Partey is on 150k but even if he's on £200k which isn't that huge to be honest. Ornstein says Van Dijk will be on £400k pw over at Pool, now that's huge and he's gonna be 34 yo in 2 months.
If we really want to bring Zubi here, we could try to afford Jorgi out, Zubi in.
But with MLS coming of age, we might be set in midfield and MLS could just take over in a pair with Rice. Zubi could be money down the drain.
Don't expect clubs to relinquish assets when there isn't any proof. If he had a year more, they would still play him next season. This isn't about the character of Arteta.
The club won't ask more than what they need to know so that they can have plausible deniability.
Giving him a new deal though is a risk and reward type of thing. You won't have plausible deniability if it pops up again. They will be aware of the constant slandering articles.
The fitness thing though, Rap, I think you are just skewing it because of recency bias. He has missed a total of 2 years worth of football from his 5 years at Arsenal. That is a fact. Tomiyasu was unbreakable at Bologna too. What matters is what he has shown us here. I don't think he is reliable enough. He had this same sort of of fitness run in 2022/23 before missing almost the entirety of last season.
We need to get rid of these type of players. If Calafiori doesn't fix up next season, it will be time to offload him too.
You are wrong re Tomiyasu as he came a crock, not on the level of Calafiori but yes. He's missed 88 and 49 days in the 2 seasons he played there. Not one healthy season in Europe. He was bad and still is.
Thing about Partey is, he's looking so nimble man. Can't you see him gliding, he doesn't look like he's stepping on the ground at times. He's quick, agile, flexible, nimble, he's quick to react to second balls, to rebounds, he tracks back, he helps in offence. Physically to me, he looks in prime condition. I don't know how do we say no to that and especially I'm sure that the club are looking at his physical data and maybe they've got a way to prove that the surgery he had, has to a degree, fixed his issues.
But is he playing for a contract? What happens to his motivations (which has been an issue) once that happens will we get 2024/25 Partey? It is a risk... trust the club will make the right decision
Nah. It won't be the same. Partey is on 200k a week. And we gave him that deal because we were nowhere near at the standard of a top club. And we had to entice him. Now we are a UCL club. We are attractive.
Zubimendi is on £50k a week at Sociedad. I don't expect his wages to be more than £120k for us. We have done well with the wage bill on some players. Less so on others.
But the main issue is availability and the background issue. If those things weren't a concern, I think they would give him a new improved deal let alone on the same wages.
It might not be his last big contract. He'll be 32 in a couple of months so if things don't work out we could always sell/gift him in a year from now or if he completes the extension of 2 years we should be giving him, he'll still be 34. Benzema is 6 years older than him, Wijnaldum is 3 years older, Kante, Mahrez and Koulibaly are 2 years older than him, Modric is 8 years older, obviously Ronaldo. He can go to Saudi in 2 years, no problems.
Also Van Dijk is signing a 2 year extension and about to be 34 yo in two months. Plenty of time left for Partey to get another contract after this.
The window is closed. So many here disrespect partey as if he's a homeless person. It is no longer about arsenal renewing his contract, it is if partey will want to renew. He's a free agent now. He has endured a lot of disrespect from fans who labelled him crock while others who are more crock and useless are getting renewal. He will be in high demand as a free agent and the best in his position in the who Europe so the very best in the world will be coming for him. It is unfortunate that people are comparing him with zubimendi.
Thomas - our Player of the Season? Silly to have to choose in such a brilliantly - intergrated team..but his sheer consistency has positively tipped us from being a kind of ok wannabes to the real thing. No wonder Dec went beserk when he was carded but.we are on a roll.

Are we really concerned if Zubimendi moves to Real Madrid?
Declan Rice is a specialist DMF the position he plays for England and so is MLS before moving to LB.
We could also decide to retain Partey.
There are plenty of other footballers that the club can buy.
What we need to recruit are players who are committed to joining us and not dithering
about where they want to go.
You know why this won't happen
1. He won't take any wage cuts.
2. There is still the back ground issue and Arsenal might look like crooks if it comes back again so they are protecting themselves against that.
3. The fitness run he is on has been the exception rather than the norm.

The background issue is a vague one.

Oh okay, I see about Tomiyasu.
I get it bro. Partey at his best is sensational. Just hope the club make the right decision based on their own information and data.
It won't matter about who stays though. next season we have to win the PL no matter what.
But is he playing for a contract? What happens to his motivations (which has been an issue) once that happens will we get 2024/25 Partey? It is a risk... trust the club will make the right decision
You think Zubimendi is coming to Arsenal on half of Partey’s wages?!
Not a chance.
Partey was on 65kpw at Atleti and we tripled that to close the deal.
We’ll do similar with Zubimendi if he’s the target.
Nah. It won't be the same. Partey is on 200k a week. And we gave him that deal because we were nowhere near at the standard of a top club. And we had to entice him. Now we are a UCL club. We are attractive.

Agreed... but club likely not going to atc what Barca or AM would offer , his last big contract kinda like xhaka 2 seasons ago
