Vieira is a dark horse

He’s physically lightweight. That’s a given. He’s also got really good output tho.

The question is and always has been if he can find a way to bridge the physical gap. One way is to bulk up but no evidence of him taking that seriously so only other way it happens is if he plays smarter. Lots of very effective PL players lack physical power. Bruno Fernandes is a good example of a player who has no physical attributes but doesn’t suffer at all from the leagues physicality. It’s possible for players who work around their physical limitations

What doesn’t work is refusing to bulk up AND refusing to play around your limitations. That’s a criticism I would level at Jesus who is also slight and constantly puts himself into physical situations he’s never going to come out of alive. The sight of him on his ass on the grass throwing his hands up in the air and looking at the ref has become a HUGE pet hate of mine. You know it’s going to happen, literally no point going into physical battles you are definitely going to lose.

Wilshere was another. Even after it became apparent he had glass ankles he never learnt to release the ball earlier and accept his body won’t allow him to twist and turn through 3 people, riding their sliding tackles. He was still doing it as tho he didn’t know his ankles were glass. Then that sight of him getting clattered and writhing on the ground - yes I felt bad for him as he could’ve been a generational player - but you MUST work with your body’s limitations and pay attention. 100% of players who ignore their weaknesses go on to disappoint in the end

And this is why CR7 has been so successful. I can’t think of any other player who has put such constant detailed attention on maximizing what he can do with his body.

I’m sure he’d love to get the ball out wide, throw some step overs and rinse his man like the old days but he long since recognized this was not going to work forever as his body aged. He constantly evolved to focus on maximizing what he can do rather than living in a dream of what he wants to do
