TRANSFER ROUND-UP – REISS, ONANA, AND NETO

by .

The January transfer rumors are picking up steam rapidly. Let’s do a little round-up, shall we?

AARON RAMSDALE WILL NOT LEAVE

This sort of rumor is always my favorite.

The ‘please don’t dare come bidding for a keeper we’re desperate to rid ourselves of’…

…’unless you gotta fat cheque, Newcastle United FC’

The only thing that slightly buttresses this sort of rumor is Ramsdale’s family members telling someone I know he’s not going anywhere this window. The person who shared the info didn’t know I’d put it on a blog, so no reason to lie.

I’m struggling to see who takes Ramsdale, but he has unique abilities and can play at a high level. I’d have been more confident in Newcastle signing him if Eddie Howe wasn’t so deep in the mess. Dubravka was pretty amazing against Liverpool as well. Arsenal will take money for him though, because we need to free up some cash on the books.

REISS NELSON TO WEST HAM

This one reared up a few days ago from the West Ham guy they call Ex (used to work at West Ham and is their elite ITK). The story is West Ham want him in the next 6 months. The player would probably quite like the move and West Ham could afford his salary. The only problem I can see here is we’d have to replace him in a tough window, and West Ham will probably try and get him on loan with a view to a perm buy.

I can’t see it happening in January if I’m honest.

PEDRO NETO

John Cross is saying Toney, Zubimendi and Neto. Three players we’ve been linked with a lot. Our forward line could do with a speed demon / close-control monster like the Spaniard. My worry, as ever, is that he’s a total crock and his numbers don’t exactly scream output machine.

Our biggest problem for the last three seasons has been a combo of Arteta overloading players and those players crumbling. I don’t want to have an 11 next season that plays together twice because we insist on not looking at injury records when we buy players.

Neto doesn’t stay fit. No point in being talented on the injury room table.

AMADOU ONANA OF EVERTON

Listen, I like this player. He really is the next level when it comes to power and pace. If he’s coming in to replace Eleneny, maybe. But I’m not sure he’s quite at the level to be additive to our midfield. We’re better than just pure power and pace. So I’m not sure this rumor is really going anywhere for me.

MARQUINHOS TERMINATED

The player we thought was the next Martinelli has flopped in Nantes. It’s not looking good, bruv. I can’t see him making it at Arsenal. He’s tanking these loan moves like that pizza-eating dough boy Wellington from way back when.

LEFT BACKERY

The big story seems to be that the key player they want this window is a left back. We cannot stop buying fullbacks, it’s an addiction, Arteta collects them like trophies. I wish, at some point, we’d be free of needing to talk about signing defenders.

That said, it is clear, that after signing 52 defenders in 4 years, we are short.

Not sure where we find one. The loan market is usually pretty garbage, you don’t get many bargains in January, and there’s not much chance the leftback will slip into the new system and help us.

CONCLUSION

Still feel like transfers this window are unlikely. A defender definitely feels like the most likely, but outside a Kiwior type buy, I’m not holding out too much hope.

Stay tuned though, we have players to sell, and a Sporting Director who likes spending cash/money.

Oh dear Emirates, you have fallen into GOH’s trap! LOL

”””’Signing Jesus + Zinchenko coming from where we’d been was a coup, if you can’t see how we’ve improved, I don’t know what to tell you…””’

Or it was a coup for Man City, who upgraded them for( Ake and Haaland) with better, more mobile dynamic and less fragile players and won the treble?

After all Jesus does not score enough goals and never has – and Zinchenko cant defend.

Ernest Reed

Too funny jonnygunner!

They got us back into the CL, and so far we’ve made €77 million directly, just from qualifying to the knockouts.

Our sponsors are apparently adjusted for CL qualifications well.

CL qualification has allowed us to secure our best talent.

We weren’t competing with City for Haaland, but 12 months later we did beat them to Rice, that’s progress.

Ernest Reed

“Signing Jesus + Zinchenko coming from where we’d been was a coup, if you can’t see how we’ve improved, I don’t know what to tell you…‘

The team did improve with the addition of two proven winners, their attitudes are what permeated through the club. One year on and you realize that both came with limitations, limitations that are hampering the club now.

For every bit of good that they came with, their inherent flaws are now detracting.

Ernest Reed

“We weren’t competing with City for Haaland, but 12 months later we did beat them to Rice, that’s progress.”

Did they? Or was it a well crafted rouse?

I take your point, not saying you are wrong- just pointing out Man City won the treble after selling Jesus, Zinchenko and of course Arteta left them.

I doubt City would want any of them back now- do you?

Rich

CG

They were sniffing around the CL while they were there, and dominating at a higher level domestically in terms of points and goals.

When Aguero left City they didn’t replace him, when they could get Kane, they decided to go striker-less..

Real Madrid haven’t replaced Benzema, Bayern Munich took a season to replace Lewandowski.

Gazza

I thought Neto was Portuguese ?

Guns of Hackney

Rose is the thinking man’s wine.

CG

Rich

””Real Madrid haven’t replaced Benzema, ””’

Ancelotti solved that puzzle with his eyes shut- by getting Bellingham to score the goals.

No one talks about Benzema now- and thats why the great clubs employ world class PROVEN managers and not wannabes to overcome these obstacles- its call management.

Rich

CG

Real Madrid got pumped by City in the CL last season with Ancholotti.

Last season they lost a 2 horse race by 10 points to one of most underwhelming Barcelona team I can remember.

Maybe it’s not that easy?

CG

Semi final last year
What happened the year before?

Ancelloti or Klopp should have replaced A. Wenger- because thats what elite clubs do- they dont fcuk around with the likes of Emery/Arteta/Edu.

Thierry Martinelli

Marcus Edwards over at Sporting can come deputise Saka on the right.
Next season sell Nketia and ESR and move in for Lautaro Martinez instead of Toney the Gambler

Rich

Ernest Reed I posted last season when Jesus was in his honeymoon period that we’d be wise to cash in in a season or 2, as these. style of players tend not to age well. I got told unanimously I was wrong… Same as when I was adamant we needed to dump Partey. I’m not yet desperate to dump Jesus, I like him, it’s his poor availability which has been the biggest issue so far. We live in a world where there’s no quality strikers, so Toney is being quoted at £60 – £100 million…. Which seems insane. I’m open… Read more »

Emiratestroller Sorry, but it’s a failure of Arteta not to realize that Pavon has made woeful decisions on GKs – that’s if they were his decisions. More likely, they were Arteta’s decisions. Fact is Arteta’s transfers are directed by his vision of how winning football should be played. And therein lies the cause of the fix he is in. Frankly, most of Arteta’s transfers have puzzled me. His obsessive pursuit of Ramsdale, of Ben White, no matter the cost. Buying Gab J and Zlnchenko, two players not good enough for Pep. And a host of others who have fallen short.… Read more »

This tool does get me into trouble sometimes- but hey ho.

A. Wenger should have been replaced and ONLY replaced by someone better- Ancelotti or Klopp or Guardiola.

No one else.
Because there is so much money in English soccer- you will get wrong un’s , charlatans, spivs and wannabes galore all trying to pretend they are the next big thing.

I don’t need analytical data to prove to me that Arteta is a once in a lifetime generational coach. He is not! I look at what goes on both onand off the field of play, to make my own decision on things. I highlight here one player, Reiss Nelson. When he came on and scored that wonder goal against Bournemouth last March, that should have been the catalyst for him and for Arteta to prove his worth. It didn’t!!. Why hasn’t he been given more game time? Why did Arteta keep him? There have been many games where he could… Read more »

He was one poster who was resolute in his Areta beliefs

Now he’s openly questions somethings, at the very least, he’s conflicted about Arteta …at the worst he’s poignant.

The air is coming out of the balloon.

Ancelotti or Klopp have both won CL’s post Wenger- so they clearly know the game.

Past is prologue. Did we sell Leno last January or keep him until the summer? Ramsdale will stay until the summer. As unremarkable as Raya has been, Mikel won’t want to risk the calamity of an injury to him if we sell Ramsdale.

Evening guys. If I nay could I point you over to Arseblog. News part. There is a chap called Tim Stillman who has just posted on why we are different this season. Absolutely spot on. bacaryisgod

It’s quite alarming to see the joy some so-called fans have in picking the club, manager and players apart the first time they smell a little blood in the water. Look at our last three games. An absolutely bruising belter of a match against Liverpool at Anfield where we played well. Then a home game against West Ham where we could have been comfortably ahead before their shock opener. We then chased the game relentlessly but our finishing was off. The loss against Fulham was a horror show but in fairness it was the first time this season we looked… Read more »

Luke Littler – Arsenal

bacaryisgod

Tony2 Yeah, that Tim Stillman post is excellent. The only thing I would add is that while Raya is only a slight upgrade on Ramsdale, in theory Ramsdale should have been a major upgrade on Matt Turner as back-up Unfortunately, his confidence looks to have taken a hit since his demotion but the intended benefit of bringing in Raya was too provide greater strength in two positions, not just one. That’s also the idea of bringing in another quality striker. Gabriel Jesus would then be able to provide a spark off the bench across the frontline instead of having to… Read more »

bacaryisgod I’ve always respected your opinions over the years but I find the last post at 20-23:06 as wishy washy, kinda like you’re white wash problems Assuming you’re right and lets frame it like Ramsdale is an upgrade on Matt Turner as number 2 goalie, why pay their back up club record transfer goalie about 129 k weekly. Who pays their rotational player who’s there to “provide a spark off the bench across the frontline” the 200k weekly wages that Jesus earns. In esense, Jesus would be doing what Trossard is there for but is on huge wages. That would… Read more »

I would imagine the Arsenal job would be very attractive to many managers, especially if they’re to come in with the understanding that they’d get the same type of financial backing that Arteta has gotten so far. So I’m honestly not that worried when the chatter comes up of, “Who would even take his place?” I’m sure good candidates will be available. But just to back up a little, how realistic is it that Arteta gets sacked? Even if we go this season without a trophy and fighting to hang on to our CL spot? I just don’t see it… Read more »

*you’re white washing problems****

Luteo Guenreira

So if you really look at it, there are a lot of similarities in the way they’ve gone about handling their manager positions across all the sports. They tend to stick with the manager through some less successful periods, to ultimately find success with the same manager. And since people have a tendency to rely on their own experiences when considering possibilities for what might happen in the future, that’s probably how they see Arsenal. So unfortunately, regardless of how some of the fans feel about it, the Kroenkes probably feel any speedbumps along the way are par for the… Read more »

Fair play to Luke Littler, well played and had Luke Humphries on the ropes there for a bit. That 7th set was a game changer though, if Littler goes up 5-2 I’m not sure Humphries can make the come back. Littler is going to be a phenom though, the fact that he’s 16 and looks old enough to date GOH’s dead mother is actually a marketing plus for him. It’s all anyone can talk about as soon as they see his picture, that lad is 16?? To me the most amazing part is that it’s not even his face that’s… Read more »

@bacaryisgod “the joy some so-called fans have in picking the club, manager and players apart the first time they smell a little blood in the water.” Players can have their ups and downs. If they mess up once it is an error, if they mess up twice it is a coincidence, if they mess up a third time it is a pattern. So if you see a pattern in players you are entitled to voice your critical opinion. I think that it is highly unlikely that Arteta would have recruited Raya or Runarsson without recommendation of Pavon.

Luteo Guenreira

I was hoping putting some perspective on it would help, but what do I know.

@MG42 You might ultimately be right about Arteta. But just like when your mother picked her boyfriend over you no matter how many times you complained about him, in all likelihood the Kroenkes will stick with Arteta for quite a bit. Sorry mate. I’m sure you’re right that step daddy was a jerk too.

MG42

@Luteo Guenreira

Your comment is typical of those here who are limited in their footballing knowledge and are more comfortable in attacking opinions of posters that don’t agree with. It reflects badly on your IQ mate, stick with 1st grader topics it suits you and will not remove all doubt about your limits of understanding.

Rich

Churn in the backup goalkeeping positions isn’t just inevitable, it’s also healthy,

Not sure why we changed Ramsdale for Raya though?…

It’s not a big deal, just don’t see much difference between them…. But as long as we don’t lose money on Ramsdale, there’s no real drama.

Luteo Guenreira

MG42 I know you think you’re smart but, saying I have limited football knowledge when I was literally pointing to anything but shows you’re not really listening. Yes I wasn’t talking about football. I was talking about everything else around it. Like, you might not have liked your mom’s boyfriend for very good reasons, but to your mom that good shagging she got from him was more important. Like I said, you might ultimately be right about Arteta, but that’s not enough to get what you want in the real world sometimes. So take a breather. Go to therapy and… Read more »

Having read Tim Stillman’s post, this made me confirm my thoughts re Arteta. He is 100% data driven. To the point that all his decisions are made in that same cold data driven minded way. The players he buys is 100% data driven (which would explain the Havertz and Zinky buys, for example). The tactics, JdP, if you think of it, was probably selected from a data driven perspective, with the idea that you are more likely to win if you control kept areas of the pitch. Curiously enough, all this date driven rigidity is brought down by another rigid… Read more »

Luteo, staN the man bought the Avalanche have been good/great for decades! The rams were pure crap when star the man bought them, but it took some time and the organization turned it around. McVay is a good coach, GM bet the farm and got it right with Donald and Stafford to have a good year. Stafford is only 1-4 qb’s to win a Super Bowl -2 in turnovers in the history of the NFL. Luteo @ January 4, 2024 20:36:53

Excellent post.

This is what worries me the most with how they run things at The Arsenal.

With Kroenke Snr only interested in top 4 for financial gain and Kroenke Jr’s ineptitude, we have Arteta with very little experience and a very big ego given the keys to run the show on his own

This is very worrying indeed
