BOSH! ARSENAL MASSACRE WEST HAM

by .

Have a bit of that, Hammers.

Thought you were going to earn the right to be our bogey team? Not under Mikel Arteta. The message was delivered with a brutal destruction of a performance, capped, with Mikel whispering.

‘I want the West Ham fans to know, it was me’

The pregame chatter was focused on the weak bench and SEVEN players missing from the squad.

No one was talking about that by halftime.

Arsenal started slowly, then went into beast mode, ripping David Moyes’s squad to the pieces in a merciless 25 minutes for the record books.

Odegaard was imperious, Saka put on the big show performance, Declan Rice cut a 66 that looked like he’d been hurt by West Ham as a child.

We opened the scoring from another setpiece. Nic Jover, our setpiece specialist, has taken us to the top of the ‘goals from setpieces’ table. He’s done an extraordinary job. Gabriel and Saliba acting like traditional English #9s with two brilliant goals delivered by Declan Rice’s beautiful boots.

Saka scored a penalty, but let’s not ignore that the assist should have been credited to a beautiful ball from deep by Leo Trossard.

The Belgian capped the half by winning the ball in the final third, giving it to Odegaard, who reverse-passed him into a great position in on the edge of the box. The Belgian cut inside and curled a camera-ready goal into the top corner.

West Ham cleared the stadium faster than I’ve seen American stadiums cleared for tornado alerts. It was a sight to behold. The fanbase that told Declan he should move to City this summer were getting pummelled by their captain.

But it wasn’t over… they still had 45 to go.

Odegaard found Saka in acres, he received the ball, turned into zero pressure, and unleashed a low piledriver that was hit so hard, you could almost taste the his disdain for a team that had hurt him in December.

The final goal was the ultimate humiliation for West Ham. Declan was found outside the area and he belted a screamer into the top corner. It was a 2% chance type of strike. He peeled off for the no-celebration celebration. It was like getting beaten up in a fight and watching your girlfriend walk off with the attacker. The stadium went from 75% full to nearly empty. Salt of the earth hammers had seen enough.

Wonderful.

There are not enough superlatives to capture how good that result was.

We broke our away day record for a result.

West Ham hasn’t been beaten that badly since the 60s.

We could have scored more if we had a proper #9.

No one was talking about the subs… well, they were, Ethan Nwaneri came on and showed that he’s really, really good. He looked very comfortable on the pitch. Carried himself like an adult and caused some problems.

Kiwior slipped in for Zinchenko again and did a brillaint job. We certainly have a player there, and I have my doubts he’s going to be sold to Milan in a cut-price deal.

Ben White showed his versatility inverting and overlapping. He bagged an assist.

Trossard, the master of pure output, should be keeping his place again. Another game-changing 90 for a player who seems to be getting better and better. Only Thierry and Robin Van Persie have better output records with over 1000 minutes played in a season.

We had seven players out and initiated a massacre.

That’s 4 wins in 4. We’re in the top 3 chasing down the league title. The team that couldn’t score now has the same goal difference as City and sits just one goal behind Liverpool.

We have the best defence in the league, despite being top 4 for errors leading to goals.

We’ve scored the most setpieces this season.

We have the most cleansheets this season.

Our players are celebrating blocked shots in the 87th minute.

This is a proper team. Just take a moment to remember all the people calling for Arteta’s head in December, taking victory laps because they thought Arteta wouldn’t get it right, they shrieked at folk pointing towards the underlying metrics or those that had the audacity to flag that we were getting really, really unlucky.

Remember those people as they try and reverse out of their shocking opinions.

Now, do I think we’re going to win the league? No. City are the best team, they have easy cup games, everyone is fit, and they are the only team in the top 3 capable of not losing for the rest of the season because they have muscle memory for that.

But can we compete? Yes. Will Jesus, Partey, and Tomi be in the mix for the next game? Likely. Do we have a nice run of games that’ll put us in the conversation for March? We do. Get to the final 8 games in the mixer and anything can happen.

Arsenal is heading towards greatness. We’re likely a little short this season. But football is a process. You have to put yourself in the best shape over the long term and trust that things will work out.

We are going to be a big trophy team sooner rather than later, the promised land is close, just enjoy where we are and keep an eye on the long game.

Right, that’s me done. See you in the comments. Also, just to remind you. The site is going under development, I’ll fix the comments and some other bugs. Also, if you really need some Arsenal goodness in your ears right now, sign up to The AOP Patreon now and get the On The WHistle early bird NOW.

We molested poor West Ham

Nice win

Tom

“Force them to build up play and they don’t concede.“
Middy, like they didn’t for the United’s first, I guess.

Anyway, what matters is we won big and made up some ground in gd department, which may come into play.

Villa are over performing so a bit weird picking them apart.

Karsa

Ode was fantastic in a team of fantastic performances.

Top player.

MidwestGun

Tom- What are you talking about ..what is weird is you obsession with any comments that aren’t favorable to Emery… I could care less… who won that one.. made for an entertaining ending. The Hag out managed Emery though that last 20 mins.. Taking off Bailey.. then not having his line drop off deeper to stop the penetrating runs over the top. It was a chipped ball behind the line from Dalot ? I think.. to Mainoo .. that doesn’t happen versus a deeper block.

Anyhow, off to go drink and watch the not so Super Bowl.

MidwestGun

Fantastic win today .. for The Arsenal though… slowly peaking at the right time .. hopefully for the run in.

Nigel Tufnel

Somebody: “Nelson,Eddie,Elneny and Cedric are a million miles away from our standards-Nwaneri looked very useful” This was addressed well earlier. Elneny and Cedric are 4th choice in their respective positions. Don’t lose any sleep over it. They’re emergency options and fillers. Too harsh on Eddie and Nelson also. You can’t have a squad of 25 Ødegaard and Saka (100m +) level attackers. We’re lucky to have players like Eddie and Reiss who have strong attitudes and stay motivaed for when they’re needed, like against Liverpool in a close game. I didn’t feel any worry when Nelson came on for us… Read more »

Tom

Middy, my obsession lol.
Both CB’s were in their natural positions to make plays for both United goals.
For the first one they failed to mark up the CF, and for the second one neither challenged for the cross, which is kinda their job in both cases.

How did the low block work out for Westham today btw?
And since we are asking questions what was your Villa table position when the first ball was kicked off last summer.
I’m sure you had them fighting for top four, no doubt.

MidwestGun

Don’t care about Villa, Tom.. had them 7th, for the season. actually think they will finish there as well. You seem triggered dude. I was not the only one who noticed their high line.. pretty much every pundit watching the game.

I got the Chiefs in the Super Bowl, any problems with that? hahaha see you later.

salparadisenyc

Villa like Spurs appear to be over achieving not hard to see both finish in the Europa if United can keep grinding away. Was hoping Brighton would do it but they look to be in total free fall.

Habesha Gooner

That was as good a performance as I have seen in a while. It had everything. Set piece goals, team goals, long range strike, limiting them to nothing. We were fantastic. The fact that we did it against this Westham team that annoyed us is great too. Now we need to go on a run. If we win 10 plus matches in a row, we will will be with in a shout to win the league.

Tom

Muddy triggered?
Hardly.
Instead of throwing labels around how about addressing the points I’ve made.
The high line aside, did both CB’s do their job today or not.
If Arsensl conceded those two goals who do you think the comments section’s ire would be directed at?

Habesha Gooner

Odegaard today was Cesc incarnated today. He was my man of the match. He run the show from start to finish.

Some of our players seem to be hitting form at the right time. That is great. We need to get all the injured players back and go for both the UCL and PL with full force.

salparadisenyc

Habesha

I’ve always been perplexed by the anti-Ødegaard agenda by some of the posters in the space. Lurk in the shadows waiting for a misstep then pounce, but go quiet after another peak performance like today.

Long may it last we’ve some intense days ahead w/ Newcastle wedged btw the Porto home and away followed by Chelsea then City away to round out March.

Freddie Ljungberg

Mid

I hear from reliable, and not at all insane sources that the super bowl is rigged in favour of the Chiefs so Taylor Swift can endorse Biden more better.
Thoughts on that? Lol.

rollen

Absolutely right Pedro, West Ham fans had that coming. We could hit them for 10 if we really wanted.
Best game of the year by far.

Habesha Gooner

It is what it is. You can’t change some people’s opinion. But Odegaard when he is on it is magical. He hasn’t got the power and pace to be a complete monster like Debruyne but he has intelligence in abundance. The way he runs games when he is in peak form is just a joy. How Madrid let us have him for £30 mil I will never know. There are few players in world football that can ran a game as him. People who understand football like him. Others focus on just criticizing.

Freddie Ljungberg

Ode was never the problem, it was always the other 8 position that’s been stymying our creativity. Even last season when Xhaka had his best ever season season he only produced half of what Ode did. This season we haven’t had anyone on the left dictating play or creating anything so Odes job has been even harder. Trossard probably the best option we have against a low block (because ESR can’t string 2 games together) but maybe less so if it gets physical or the game gets stretched. We’re looking better now because Kai is out of left 8 and… Read more »

Bob N16

Should Nwaneri go on loan next season or will he get enough minutes with us? He’s clearly too good for youth football now. I appreciate he is so young to go off on loan and Arsenal will probably prefer to keep him close. I guess there’s no rush.

Bob N16

I must admit was getting a little worried about MO8. When we’re playing well he’s brilliant, when we’re struggling he struggles too, unlike say Rice.

kpankulu

2 games running I’ve refused to watch us on TV and we’ve scored 8 goals conceding 1 which was Raya’s fault anyway. So I’d like to take credit for last 2 games and promise not to watch them again this season. [@PV4]

You must be blind. Didn’t watch the game last week but you conveniently blame Raya when it was Saliba who was responsible. Ugh.

Pierre

Odegaard passing forward instead of sideways and backwards has transformed his game , let’s hope he doesn’t revert to the negative mode of earlier in the season. He is now mixing up his passing in the final third and has become unpredictable and is threading some nice balls through the channels. No more talk of the change of position holding his game back is there , for me it was all about Odegaard taking more risks with the ball and I said so at the time. I can now see Odegaard getting multiple assists until the end of the season.… Read more »

Olumide

That was a great match to watch.

I think West Ham believed their hype after beating us at the Emirates.

When West Ham was playing ball, I just felt Arsenal would win (didn’t guess the scoreline though).

The chances of Arsenal beating most teams increases if the opposition teams don’t build a low block.

Olumide

Since last season, my favourite front line is Saka Trossard Martinelli.

Trossard is really good playing the false 9.

kpankulu

My only negative from today’s game is that Havertz did not produce any red cards for the Rice-less team…but his shithousery tweet made up for it [Toney-style]. Onwards!

raptora

Good game the AFCON final.

Dissenter

Pedro,
“West Ham cleared the stadium faster than I’ve seen American stadiums cleared for tornado alerts. It was a sight to behold.” 🙂 🙂 🙂

kpankulu

I am still quite worried. Can we come out of the woodwork and celebrate this win, just a little – like Rice did against the riceless team?

Nigel Tufnel

Watching a Trossard compilation. Does anybody doubt that given the same number of minutes he would produce more goals and assists than Jesus?
Should’ve had that long ball assist to Saka that became the penalty too.
Give Jesus more rest for his knees, and let him work off the wings a little more often.

Northbanker

Loved the cameo by Nwaneri – it was the icing on the cake today
Bob, I don’t think he should go on loan. He should stay in the ambit of the first team and gradually increase those cameos as should Lewis Skelly. Saka did the same.

kpankulu

Hola, Balogun apologists…still wanting Arteta out for selling him? He is a flop so far this season, no?

Belfast Gooner

Just a brilliant, brilliant result. It’s clicking nicely. Delighted being able to stick it to Irons supporting mates earlier.

I almost felt sorry for Moyes before half time when it looked like he was about to cry. Then I remembered everything that’s gone before. And I laughed. Hard. Big thanks to Tross the Boss for completing my Acca!

Tom

God made the Chiefs win the Superbowl against the godless sodomites of San Francisco.
God and Taylor Swift that is.

China1

Ode played like 19 year old cesc yesterday. There isn’t a better compliment I can give. 19 year old cesc was disgustingly good.

China1

Nwaneri looks like he should be in the squad next season and used as a rotation option and in the cups. If yesterday was anything to go by, kid is good enough to have a part to play as a squad player.

Alex James

West Ham were talking too much after their two wins earlier . They needed this hiding. Well done lads

Siddeeq

Its cruel for Generational to beat his mentor Moyes like that.

Jimmy B

Great stuff. Thank you.

Northbanker

China – yep- a squad player next year and the regular left side no8 the year after. Havertz will then be the very expensive squad player

Northbanker

Nwaneri and MLS will be pressing for places within 2 years. This is why we will need a CF more than another midfielder next year . Put Osimhen there (even he will be ultimately under pressure from Obi Martin) and we will be banging
Cozier Duberry to be the cover for Saka if /when he signs.

Siddeeq

Osimhen cant score against Ivory coast, he is average

Marky Mark

The Emery lovers (mostly Ex Wenger Boyz) took one hell of a beating! Certainly a bad Ebening all round. There’s an irritating cockiness to Villa and its supporters that makes a defeat all the more satisfying.
Well done to the lads for a ruthless demolition particularly with our artist Odegaard and lastly nice one Cote D’Ivoire !

Marky Mark

Worth pondering what might have been if Rice had been taking the succession of corners at Newcastle away rather than Trossard. This would also have given Trossard freedom around the edge of the box. May well hace gained at least a point

Bob N16

Simply on what I’ve seen at AFCON, Osmihen doesn’t look worth £100m +. I appreciate his form for Napoli is the reason why he is so highly rated but I haven’t watched him play there. Northbanker, I hope you’re right about Nwaneri & MLS. I would worry that with the squad we have already and Arteta’s tendency to go strongest 11 for the most part, that the youngsters wouldn’t get enough minutes. Has Patino progressed enough during his loans? He does have the technical ability to play at the highest level. Just like with Nwaneri, I feel he’d fit in… Read more »

Marky Mark, don’t know if you caught MOTD but they made the point that pre break, Rice had only taken 3 corners whereas he’s taken 12 subsequently.

Josip Skoblar

Sensational win! Our best game of the season so far. Moyes is so anti-Arsenal. Great to see him dejected on the touchline. 😉

Marky Mark

Siddeeq – Osimhen definitely needs a 175m euro transfer to Chelsea. It could well be comedy gold

Siddeeq

Martinelli should replace Jesus at CF and get a wide forward like Adingra.

Marky Mark

Hi Bob – they do seem to like our set plays on MOTD indeed previously they decided it would be nice to tell the whole world about our coding system. Obviously West Ham missed the programme.
The set piece coach is worth his weight in gold.

James wood

Really nice win with Ode back on song.
Osimhen is an embarrassment.
Would love to sign BOWEN get rid of Eddie and Nelson to West Ham.

“Burnley must be quaking in their boots about facing Arsenal”
Careful Pierre.. a good post..but dont tempt fate…

The most effective dead ball should have pace and whip on it as it is the most difficult ball to defend for both the goalkeeper and defenders , that is why Beckham was an elite dead ball specialist and it is why Rice is having so much success , though he is nowhere near Beckham’s level yet. There is an argument for saying that Rice should take charge of all dead ball situations, I’ve never rated Odegaard’s dead ball technique and have said so, not enough pace or whip on the ball. Rice should be able to use the same… Read more »

BOB N16 I made the point last week that Nanweri would soon be joining first team squad and that he would also be offered cameo opportunities to play in team most probably this season. When he came on yesterday there were no fireworks, but he showed enough maturity to suggest that he was ready to sit on bench and play 10-15 minutes. Unlike most young players of his age he has the physical maturity to cope with adult football. Personally I would not send him out on loan. Arsenal will have vacancies in our squad this summer. Our midfield has… Read more »

Osihmen is a top player. And he can’t be judged based on a low block Nigerian team where he had to fight to even get chances. He is much more of a threat at Napoli. He is much more a goalscorer than Jesus and he also puts in a shift everytime he plays. Saying that though, he isn’t a 100 mil player though. We can go about our striker search in two ways. Raise the floor with a good player and sell Nketiah, or blow our money on Osihmen. If we could get a Toney or a Vlahovic for £60… Read more »

I agree with both ES and Habesha. I think we’ll sell some players for decent money at last, some or all of Eddie, Nelson, Partey, Vieira, ESR, Ramsdale, Tierney. With Elneny and Cedric off too, we’ll have a fair churn of players. Some of those squad spaces will be replaced by youngsters, Patino and Nwaneri hopefully. We’ll need a new back up GK – 5-10m: an 32 year old who’s happy to be at Arsenal as a back up. Big money on a CF, a versatile CM who can play 6, a replacement LB/LCB if Kiwior goes and ideally a… Read more »

Truly amazing performance. Loved it. So nice to keep the clean sheet. Obviously helped that Chenko wasn’t there for his customary fuck up. Only downside – our perma crocks don’t seem to show any sign of improvement. TP, TT, Chenko, ESR and Jesus. As much as I like TP and ESR, and as much as I detest Chenko, keeping personal biases aside, we really need to move on from most of these players. Does FV also fall in this list, or is it early days to call time on his Arsenal career ? Will be hard to move them all… Read more »

Bob N16 I agree with your post and also Pedro. This summer will be Arsenal’s last major clearout. The club will offload probably 8-10 players who were on fringes in this season’s squad and out on loan. Personally I think that Arsenal are following the same blueprint as Man City who operate with a relatively small first team squad of 22 players. Arsenal will spend this summer’s transfer budget on three new outfield players plus a second string goalkeeper if Ramsdale decides to leave. I suspect that Nanweri and Walters will be promoted from U21s to first team squad. The only… Read more »

Ramsdale, Vieira, KT – We can sell them at a loss but they’ll still bring in money although KT could be tricky. We could even make a profit on Ramsdale. Eddie, Nelson and ESR would bring in some really good money. Much as I’m a fan of ESR, we can’t be too sentimental about players. If Arteta doesn’t trust a player to play many minutes, then sell and reinvest the money in players he’d be happy to play regularly. Those three could bring in £80-100m. With Ramsdale, Vieira, Nuno Tavares, an extra £40m maybe. Last year we had a net… Read more »

I think you’re all kidding yourselves if you believe our shopping list is going to be that long.

The FFP and Squad cost rules has ground down the velocity of money and there wasn’t enough in the past for our rejects

Once again everyone is listing up the rejects and crocks and assuming clubs will stump up good money. At best we will give them away

Which means our purchase list, like most clubs going forward, will be short.

Bob N16

I think you’re right ES, Arteta wants a ‘compact’ squad of players that he, for the most part, can trust equally to perform in a way and of a standard that he requires. At the moment there are still too many players who he only seems to trust with a few minutes here and there, which puts a greater onus on his ‘favourites’. For example Eddie, Jesus has been out for the last two games but for various reasons, he has chosen Havertz and Trossard to play instead of him. Nelson has looked sharp and purposeful pretty much every time… Read more »

Bob N16

Northbanker, young English players, PL ready will always be sought after. I think you might be forgetting the TV money!

Northbanker

Bob – maybe Nketiah but with ESR’s injury record can’t see any exciting cash inwards

However my key point is that the transfer market is likely to be very different going forwards, even with TV money. Until valuations come down in line with reality there is gong to be real gum in the works and that will spread down to big clubs like ours offloading their waste disposal

Not only is FFP finally looking like it has teeth but the UEFA Squad Cost rules are being phased in and these are going to dampen everything

Bob N16

Fair point Northbanker but hopefully this will have an effect on the prices we have to pay so we’ll still be in a good position!

raptora

I’m watching a clip of Bukayo’s 100 G/A for Arsenal.
https://twitter.com/jxividz/status/1756718542144102724

Less than a minute in and his delivery when playing on the left is absolutely top notch. Why the fuck do we never switch up our wingers in our games – Marti on the right and Saka on the left? Just look at him. He is a literal assist machine!

Northbanker

Bob – totally agree – we have most of the nucleus of what we need and topped with the exciting young players coming off the factory conveyor belt I think however the nervousness of the market overall in Jan TW is a sign and it will take some moving of the wheel. We need to be smart about what we pay. If Chelsea and City are also now watching their position then thee is a chance that al values wil get pulled down Obviously the summer TW is different as the season ticket and TV money rolling in and the… Read more »

Arsenal are not sentimental when it comes to offloading players. They are frankly quite ruthless. Arsenal will offload the older players either for minimal transfer fees eg Partey or for free as they are at end of contracts eg Elneny and Cedric. That will save us over £400K pw in wages. Tierney, Tavares,Vieira and Lokonga will also leave on modest transfer fees. The club will endeavour to get a decent fee for them Realistically we will be lucky to get more than £30-35 million for the four combined. I like that we scoring from set pieces but I wonder if this is sustainable. Other teams will figure out our tricks and neutralize them, I would rather be dominating scoring charts with goals scored regularly by our players.

Arsenal from set-pieces in the prem this season:

– 16 goals scored from set-pieces, excluding penalties — MOST in the Premier League.

– 11 goals scored from corners — MOST in the Premier League.

– 7/7 penalties scored — MOST in the Premier League.

evil_c

How many games has Chambers or Holding played in the premiership apart from at Arsenal? Hardly any. People think the likes of Nelson, Eddie will get decent money, but i just cant see it. Arsenal play dross backups who sink as soon as they leave the club (e.g. AMN). The only exception seems to be Iwobi, who at least is trying.

So there is no evidence apart from Balagon we can do the whole man city sell the rejects approach.
