TOP OF THE TABLE CLASHES ARE BACK

by .

It’s BIG game eve. Are you nervous?  Yeah, me too. But good nervous. These consequential games at the top of the table are the type I never thought we’d be around again.

Arsenal vs Liverpool. Home advantage to us. No one has any idea how the game is going to shake out because we’re both world-class sides.

There was a little bit of disappointment pre-game. Thomas Partey’s issue he picked up in training has extended out to him missing the game. It’s not serious, so he’ll be about for the run-in. You just have to remind yourself you can NEVER rely on Thomas Partey for anything. The man is Abou Diaby part II. It’s a sad way for a professional to go, especially one with no injuries during his time at Atleti. There is no doubt that we need to find a player who can do the things he can PLUS stay fit all season. I really hope we’re plucking from the Premier League this summer.

Still, that doesn’t stop us doing bad things to Liverpool. One of the most productive teams in the league has been largely controlled by Arsenal in the last two games despite the big W not coming out way. The luck has to change at some point, so if we go out tomorrow and play like we did in the cup, anything is possible.

We had Jorginho in the side and we battered them for an house. We also had Kai Havertz as a number 9 and he played really well. I’d be shocked if we don’t see Kai in the starting 11, his power, speed, and aggression could be really additive to the game. He should also be in great shape because he had a little rest last week.

This is a game that we’ll get big chances, Liverpool will offer us space at times, the only thing we have to deal with is their exceptional keeper.

Big games need heroes, they need magic, and they need a bit of luck. Our front three needs to deliver some xG monstering.  I can’t be watching Gabriel Jesus falling over chances, Bukayo and Martinelli to play at their peak, and the whole team needs to take more responsibility for being killers.

The consequences are massive for the league. Lose, it’s over. Win, it’s on. Draw, it’s back to doubt. I think the mathematicians in the fan base would disagree, but from a feelings perspective, and a general narrative, it’ll be really hard to bounce back from a loss.

I’m still maintaining that Manchester City are the big dogs in this race, I think Liverpool will run out of steam, and at some point, doing it for the boss will wear thin. We just need to keep pace.

I want Arsenal to be in that mixer because I want Arteta to show the world the rebuild people thought was OTT was necessary and that it’ll work. I want the underlying performance metrics to be recognized by real world results. I want to see Arsenal have the first breakout performance of 2024.

I am fine with a Manchester City-like slow start… but we have to finish with a bang. Win this game, we have a lovely run of matches up until the Manchester City away day at the end of the month.

Winning here makes everything better.

Let’s see what the boys have.

Zinchenko was an injury.

Sanmi

Pierre, it’s you that should pay attention. Arteta had always varied his approach, he’s not shy of going long. It was the main reason he was happy to sell xhaka and buy Kai because, he wanted someone to aim at upfront and that can consistently be attack minded when they get the ball there.

Pv4

I can’t remember who it was that posted that vvd was nowhere near as good as he was and he was laughed at by a few …..think he’s owed an apology eh

TheLegendThatIsDennisBergkamp

What a weekend. Spursy Saturday. Arsenal Seismic Sunday. Cloud 9 people.

salparadisenyc

Spicy post match from Klopp, put much on referee followed with best line ‘we had 0 shots on goal in first 45 and went in 1-1, weird.”

Northbanker

Magnificent performance today from the whole team. Raya -been questioning his signing but today was superb other than for their goal. His throwing out has been truly impressive. Jorginho – I’d agree with Rich he is the best no 3 DM in the Prem and was great today. When there is no deep block I’d play him with Rice assuming Partey is not available Rice – guy is an absolute machine and getting cheaper in value terms all the time Havertz – better as a CF than a CM but we still need to be more lethal in front of… Read more »

Raya was not superb – Jesus H! He had some good moments but was terrible in the equaliser. Blame the defenders they were at fault but a key point of confidence is a keeper who can try and sort out issues at the back.
If he’d given away a penalty in the cock-up I’d not half as bothered.
Ultimately he won’t dive in amongst the boots. This isn’t good enough

Pierre

Sanmi
Obviously I was paying attention because we didn’t play long in our previous 3 seasons under Arteta even with Xhaka as the no.8 , who is a very good header of the ball by the way, in fact Probably better than Havertz.
As i said , it’s good to see Arteta is recognising that this season there is a different way to win a football match especially against the top teams who are elite at pressing

Orbinho – – Today’s Expected Goals Against of 3.52 is the highest that Liverpool have faced in a Premier League game on record in our database. – Arsenal mustered 15 shots against Liverpool today. The most they have managed in a Premier League game against the Reds since August 2015. – Bukayo Saka has scored three goals in his last two Premier League games against Liverpool at the Emirates – Bukayo Saka now has the same number of Premier League goal involvements for Arsenal as Freddie Ljungberg (72) – Leandro Trossard has scored more Premier League goals against Liverpool than… Read more »

There were even a few on here who blamed Raya for the forest goal last week, so for Markymark to point the finger at Raya after another cock up from one of the untouchables (saliba)it is hardly surprising..

Bob N16

All I want to say is that we’re looking up instead of down when it comes to the league table. I was fuming at half time but ecstatic from Martinelli’s goal onwards.

Every player deserves to feel proud- great team performance.

Tom

“Raya was not superb – Jesus H! He had some good moments but was terrible in the equaliser. Blame the defenders they were at fault but a key point of confidence is a keeper who can try and sort out issues at the back.“ You mean sort out issues at the back like Allison did for VVD? The problem top teams’ CB’s face is that they are expected to win the ball but also keep possession whenever possible, while lesser teams can just hoof it into touch. I put that one squarely on Saliba, it’s called taking charge of the… Read more »

Pierre

Markymark If you understood goalkeeping you would know that Raya was put in a near impossible situation by Saliba , who if we are honest should have booted the ball away. If as you suggest, Raya came flying out and Saliba at the same time decided to pass the ball back to the keeper , Raya would have been stranded and rightfully criticised. If Raya came flying out and Saliba then decided to boot the ball out of play just as Raya arrived , this would have led to Saliba and Raya replicating what Allison and van djke did in… Read more »

Bob N16

Tom, neither Saliba or Raya took responsibility.

Tom

Bob, you’re asking the keeper to read his CB’s bloody mind.
Pierre is 100% correct.

JohnG

Didn’t comment during yhd game as I knew if could bd a topsy turvy affair and when their equaliser went in just on the stroke of half time I have to admit I feared the worse
But for a change(lately anyway) lady luck showed up at the other end. Think we deserved that win and the only negatives are that we lost players again to injury.
Well done lads, keep it going

Pierre

When all is said and done we are penalised for almost every slight error at the back atm.
This won’t continue , our defence is almost as tight as a duck’s arse and that’s water tight, if we continue to starve the opposition of chances we will be very close to winning the title , just need to Siba refocused and cut out the silly mistakes , I put it down to over confidence..

Rich

6 to 1, half a dozen to the other… Whether you think Saliba should have just hoofed it?… Raya should have been more decisive?… Or it was just a case of poor communication and they both share the blame?.. What I liked was the reaction… Against Fulham I hated the bickering and finger pointing in the 2nd half.. There was none of that today… We came out the traps slow 2nd half, but overall players kept their heads, Jorginho’s experience was vital, he was calmness personified… The margins 2nd half were finer than anyone would care to admit in the… Read more »

I think Saliba is much more responsible for that goal than Raya was because he should be aware the goalie is not coming for ball while he waiting for keeper to get ball.

JohnG

I think we can cut Saliba a bit of slack, he is a young player still learning the game yes he is very good but he will still have ygd odd mistake in him, look at VVD the other end, it happens to the best. Enjoy the win gentlemen as make no mistake about it, in the grand scheme of things, THAT WAS AN IMPORTANT WIN

Matt B

Pierre: I was right behind the goal — Saliba was waiting for Raya to come and get it but he dithered. Most the North Bank thought the same, it was gutting and clearly Raya was a bit pants whatever you say.

Didn’t really matter in the end, thankfully — we got the win we deserved and the place was absolutely rocking. Best game of the season

John

Kai man of the match not for me.Its between Martinelli and maybe Jorginho.

JohnG

Well said Rich

Tom

Matt B, I suppose Lee Dixon knows nothing about defending or maybe he just had a bad seat.

JohnG

Jorginho had it on the TV.
Very good game, from what I saw

Spanner

Raya or Saliba ?
Did either of them communicate or just expect the other to deal with it ?
Lesson learned I reckon.

JohnG

Will we ever see a Party Rice midfield.
Ps Declan Rice is a real humble guy and comes across very well when ever he is interviewed

JohnG

Who ever is closest to the ball needs to deal with it, but like I said earlier Saliba is a young player and still has some learning to do, but I am more than happy to see him do it playing for Arsenal because he is just so fucking good

Tom

I think I speak for everyone here when I say I’m super happy Allison didn’t dither.

Bob N16

Saliba was shielding it for Raya to deal with – misjudgement by Saliba, indecisiveness from Raya. That said, we beat them fair and square, joyful!

Sanmi

Admit it @Pierre, Arteta was never shy of route one football, it was how we won the fa cup with Aubameyang, xhaka don’t act like a forward when in the 18, except he gets a goal scoring opportunity, he is not able to do much else in the 18. Harvetz does that pretty well. Holdups, lay offs, yes he needs to improve goalscoring. With Harvetz we retain the ball when we punt it to him

jw1

Many positives in this match. Very mature performance– with Jorginho directing traffic. Liked the way Odegaard spearheaded the press– Kai and Martin were grinders tonight. The duo funneled the ball where it was best to defend– with little to no space in the center of the pitch for Pool to play through– thanks to Rice and Jorginho. Reds made more errors playing out than I’d seen all season.

Tense match no doubt. But every one of our guys get top marks for seeing the plan through as drawn.

Rich

Wins against our direct rivals count double. Last season we finished 5 points behind City, if we beat them once, we win the title by a point… If we beat them twice it’s a 12 point swing.. We’re 7 points clear, instead of 5 behind. Even if we’d beaten City twice, but lost twice to Villa who we took 6/6 from.. We’d have still finished on the same 84 points… But we’d have pipped City by a point. These games matter.. 4 points off Liverpool is big, we’ve already beaten City. The margins are sometimes tighter than they appear on… Read more »

Think it’s going to be closer than last year. Can’t be certain on that but it does seem to be shaping up that way. Let’s hope we are there about when squeaky bum time happens. Think last years experience will hold us in good stead, however painful it was to take

Rich

Watching our first goal back.. 18 passes from the back to put Havertz through.. Pierre needs to stop this silly Ødegaard agenda with his silly statistics.. Against Forest he put Jesus through after a lovely 1-2 with Saka… Jesus hit the inside of the post.. He intercepted for the 2nd… Put through Jesus for the pre-assist. Today he put Havertz through with a sublime ball for the 1st… Put one on a plate 2nd half for Kiwior.. The idea Ødegaard does create chances is complete and utter tripe… Of course the out ball to Saka is part of our play…… Read more »

Rich , Ode just needs to find his shooting boots again, we will need him to get somewhere near last years numbers if we are to be in with a shout

Craig Sheppard

Serious question. Taking my boy to his first Arsenal match in April to the emirates to see the Luton game. We absolutely love the atmosphere we’ve heard from a far. Is there anywhere to find out words to some of the most sung songs at the stadium so we can join in when we visit?

bendabrah

@Craig Sheppard: search YouTube for Arsenal FC chants. There are some videos with the lyrics on the video. Good luck and enjoy the day out with the young man

Paulie

I’ve been very critical of Martinelli this season but today he was brilliant as was jorginho. If only Artrta wasn’t so stubborn and bought an actual striker then he could probably win the league. If Arsenal can challenge until the end I will be happy even if we fall short and in the summer go out and get a real striker then we can win the league next season for sure. I do think we’re good enough to win the champions league this season if we can cut out the mistakes

Goonerboy

Great result. Liverpool were the best team in the country bar none coming into this game. Our finishing is a bit more relaxed and our luck may have changed. Jorginho is very smart and Havertz and Odegarde were way better. Keep Saliba fit and we have a chance. Kiwior needs more game time.
Many tough games ahead but this was a good team performance.

S23

Magnificent result and performance,Jorginho really was superb as was Havertz,Saka was a bit off-but probably carrying an injury.
I thought we would face an onslaught in the 2nd half-but they were kept mostly at arms length.
Special mention for Martinelli,no one else in the league causes Trent such problems.
Glorious.

Not sure if this has been posted but Ian Wright is an absolute legend: “The negativity towards my manager, man. Because Martin Odegaard, he’s taken a picture with Stuart the photographer, a lifelong Gunner – this man’s been supporting Arsenal since he’s what five or something ridiculous like that – taking a picture in front of the North Bank, what’s wrong with the captain doing that? Marky Mark

Pierre – do you actually understand goal keeping? Ramsdale would have gone for it. In my amateur antics I’d have gone for it.
Raya differed he should have risked the injury

TT

there is no way that anyone an pin the goal on Raya. It was Saliba that was in control of the ball an either he calls Raya to collect it or when he sees he is not coming for it he boots it to tier Z.

TT
Stevegooner

There’s two options Raya had. Shout either ‘keepers’ or ‘away’. He’s in charge of the 6 yard area. It’s his responsibility to let the defenders know what to do. Anyway, three points. UTA

Chrispy

Why are people analysing the goal we conceded. Jeez, enjoy a really good win. Pivotal probably.

Marko

Nothing annoys me more in sport than cunts who criticize people who celebrate. If you could only celebrate after winning a trophy no one would celebrate outside of a handful of teams. And it’s usually the same type you know like an obvious miserable bastard like Roy Keane or a clear idiot like Carragher

Marko

Also I want an article on how we played well and it was because we didn’t play inverted fullback nonsense

Madhu

Life is all about celebrating small moments and being happy when you can otherwise the world is a very terrible place with terrible things. Enjoy the victory gunners today is the day to say Trust the Process the Arteta way 😄

Pierre

Rich You seem a little blind to Odegaard’s failings earlier in the season , anyway it wad an impressive performance from Odegaard today , good to see him play the ball first time to Havertz for our first goal. His all round game was good today , created some nice openings and as usual worked hard and was more aggressive in his closing down than usual. My criticism of Odegaard earlier in the season was for his lack of creativity and refusal to play the slide rule pass to the striker or inside the full back.. I can highlight the… Read more »

Not excuses Pierre… Legitimate reasons. We changed two thirds of our midfield… While that was a necessary adjustment, and really we didn’t go far enough, because Partey should have gone as well… That was always going to bring a few teething issues… The way we play is highly choreographed, patterns of play take time to learn.. As does learning what to do without the ball in our system… I don’t think Martinelli’s issues have been all down to him either, it’s been a collective issue, hopefully it’s something we can work through with our current options, he was excellent today.… Read more »

‘Wins against our direct rivals count double.’

Whilst I appreciate the thought process, and getting a result at the direct expense of your rivals is lovely, this is the sports fans equivalent of girl math lol

sorunmuogmailcom

Things I learnt today: – Double pivot is the way to go. Don’t let Rice carry the whole defensive burden. – Can we thrash this inverted fullback stuff already. We look more assured without it. – Havertz may not be the best striker of the ball but playing him as a 9, for now, has two advantages: allow other attackers to play off him and allows the midfield to buuild unlike when he slows down our buildup. – Even in amateur football, immediately your defender start shielding the opponent from the ball, as a keeper, that’s your cue to come… Read more »

I think people forget that you can go on these great winning runs against elite teams and yet lose your place in the league due to dropped points vs the weaker teams – which is specifically exactly what happened in both of the last 2 seasons and happened to us earlier this season. If we hadn’t lost against teams like west ham and Fulham we’d have still been top in the first place As well we have two title rivals at the moment so whilst we’ve just beaten one of them we’ve also done city a favour in the process…… Read more »

That worked out well didn’t it.

China We’re 3 points ahead of City… They have 2 games in hand.. If they win them 2 games, they’ll be 3 points ahead… If we’d lost to City… They’d be 3 points ahead now, and 9 if they won both their games in hand… It’s a 6 point swing… If we’d lost to Liverpool today, we’d be 8 points behind… Our win put us 2 points behind. Another 6 point swing.. Our wins against City + Liverpool count more than if we’d beat West Ham + Fulham, but lost to City + Liverpool…. Because we’d still have 49 points…… Read more »

China… At the start of today Chelsea had 31 points from 22 games. Arsenal had 46 points from 22 games. So at the start of today Chelsea had 48 point to play for, and could finish on 79 points maximum. So Arsenal needed 34 points to make it mathematically impossible for Chelsea to finish above us. We won… They Lost… So even though that’s just 3 points… We now only need 28 points to finish above them, not 34. It’s a 6 point swing….Because there’s only 114 points to play for. For all those people giving Saliba a pass and conveniently blaming Raya…insert Zinchenko in Saliba’s place. How would you react? Call for his execution, probably. Be objective. There are times to play like a Rolls-Royce defender – and times to just kick the fucking ball away. Saliba and Saka are great players but stop giving them a pass when they make mistakes and instead find ways to denigrate Raya and Zinchenko and Havertz and Jorginho and Odegaard in order to satisfy your fucking fairytale narratives! Trossard’s goal meant that Arteta shut your trap real good. Anyone could see Martinelli was bone tired after leaving everything on the field with his amazing performance.

China1

Rich I understand your point but by using the Chelsea example and saying that’s also a 6 point swing for us, you’re demonstrating that it is the same mathematical value we got from Chelsea’s defeat as we got from Liverpool’s defeat so what would even be the point of saying ‘games against rivals count double’ when you’re also saying since Chelsea lost and we won today that also counts double? If everything counts double then nothing does, it just counts There are two real benefits of facing a direct rival: 1) it’s in your hands to cause them to draw/lose… Read more »

Martinelli was class yesterday. He really earned that goal even if it was crap lol

Aside from harrying relentlessly to get himself into that position and make his own luck, I thought he was such a nuisance all game. The end product and decision making were all there in spades and his willingness to sprint all day and be that outlet caused pool no end of trouble. Really really good performance

Jorginho as well looked stand out good. Very rare to have rice play really well and look overshadowed by his CM partner but Jorginho was wonderful.

Rich

China It’s not my point or my opinion, it’s how it works. I used Chelsea as an example, because you brought it up… Claiming it was just 3 points, when it’s a 6 point swing. Take Liverpool… At the start of today they had 51 points, there was 48 to play for. They could get 99 points. Arsenal had 46 points, 48 to play for, so we could get 94 points. Iam not sure if Saliba did shout for Raya to come for the ball or vice versa and that lead to the confusion. Given they created 0 chances all game, it’s annoying that they scored but at least it was better that way than them having cut us apart.

Madhu

I think it’s a lesson to us that we should trust our squad a lot.more. Jorgi should play more and Kiwior didn’t do anything wrong as a left back. We should be prepared for more deep blocks after yesterday’s game. The game was open and we were better than Liverpool an indication to others to have deep blocks to prevent us. But we have to play Jorgi more and his passing was the key difference.

China + Bob If Arsenal + City both played 36, won 36… We’d both have 108 points. If we then won both games against City we’d then have 114 points, they’d have 108. But it doesn’t work like that In head to head games, unless each club win 1 each, which cancels each win out. Because if the table looks like this after both games, because City wins both: City 114 Arsenal 108 Or like this… Because Arsenal win both: Arsenal 114 City 108 You think that’s 6 points… But it’s not.
