WHY ARTETA WON’T GO TO BARCELONA (NOW)

by .

Let’s start with Liverpool watch. They smashed Norwich. Not sure there was much doubt that was going to happen, but it was interesting listening to the ESPN commentators say the atmosphere around the stadium was very odd. Fans weren’t quite sure how they were supposed to be behaving. Their next game is Chelsea at home, not sure I hold out much hope for Poch, but it’ll be interesting to see how the performance looks.

I’d heard some rumblings on Friday that Fabio Vieira might be back in the mixer for the U21s, it wasn’t to be, apparently there’s been a minor set back, but he will partake in the next few weeks. It’s interesting that the player has dropped off the radar and we’ve barely noticed. If anyone looked like he needed a loan, it was him. He’s been out since November, there’s always the hope that he’ll come back and give us a ‘like a new signing’ bounce. There’s something there, he just struggles to pull it together consistently, and he’s not quite the end product king we’d hoped for. Regardless, it’ll be good to at least have an additional attacking option to draw on for the rest of the season.

Thomas Partey training pictures were on show again this weekend. The club is keen to show the world the Ghanaian is ready to put in a shift in the back half of the season. I would say I’m confident of him showing up in this Nottingham Forest squad, but let’s be honest, with Thomas, you never know. But if they’re showing him off on the feed, you have to imagine he’ll be in the mixer.

FA Cup weekend was pretty good to Arsenal. City and Liverpool stayed in the mixer which keeps stretched legs nice and, er, stretched.

Keeping with FA Cup. Marcus Rashford has found himself in hot water again, this time, he was caught in a nightclub in Belfast and he called in ill. What is going on at United? How can a club culture get so bad? The management book on this is going to be spectacular. No one can get to grips with the problem. What is so unique about United? Why can’t someone do a clean-up job? How can Rashford go from the darling of United, to a player approaching middle-age in footballing terms (27 this year) that is behaving like a teenager? It really is a mystery. Their new CEO has got a job on his hands when he finally joins up.

Spicy managerial news kept on flowing this week, this time with the news that Barcelona’s Xavi is packing it in. Like Klopp, he also claimed he lacked the energy. Getting savaged by the media and the fanbase that used to love you cannot be easy. I doubt he has another job lined up, but it does put another major job up for grabs this summer.

The Barcelona one worries me a bit. Mikel Arteta hasn’t signed his new deal with the club. He trained at La Masia. We know Barcelona love to chat about ‘BARCA DNA.’ I hope that he sees the troubles they’ve been having with money and is happy with what he has built at Arsenal.

As I’ve been writing this, the Spanish newspapers have already gone into battle mode. Sport and Diaro are claiming Arteta has said his goodbyes. Can you imagine that? Midseason, with a squad he’s built from the ground up, and he says goodbye to pick up a new project in Spain? This does remind me of the years when we were getting bullied by the Spanish clubs for our best players (Petit, Overmars, Cesc… Hleb). They had the money, the glamour, and the power. Now, they just have the glamour. The best players, the biggest wages, the HUGEST transfer budgets, and the mega-rist (it’s a word) drama all happens in England. Why would Arteta leave when the path to a Premier League title never looked clearer for Arsenal over the next few years? Once he’s won a major trophy with Arsenal, he can go wherever he wants. But bolting on a project early to a club that will not tolerate a process would be absurd.

I’d say the three things he’ll want from a new deal are as follows:

  1. Money that puts him up there with the best in the world
  2. The backing of his young boys as they develop into men (Wenger didn’t get that)
  3. Full commitment in the transfer market so he can have the best squad in Europe.

Arteta also understands what he has is special – and it’s because of the work he’s put in with his team. Last season, he took the youngest squad in the league to 2nd (24.1). This season, after getting backed, he’s challenging for the league and the Champions League again with the third youngest squad (24.3-24.8). Statistically, peak years for football teams is 26-31. We’re two seasons away from that. Liverpool will be in rebuild, City will likely be under new leadership in who-knows-what-shape, then there’s Arsenal, ready to dominate.

He’s not getting 4 years at Barca. He’d be joining a club that killed the mental health of a legend for being 3rd, a season after winning La Liga. Why would you sign up for that? You wouldn’t.

I think Josh Kroenke has shown he’s the man to deliver on the things Arteta needs, so I’d imagine it’s a no-brainer that he’ll sign on. As fans, we just have to accept that the man we have in the dugout will attract offers from clubs he has a past with (City, PSG, Barca). I told you all this when he signed and people laughed, look where we are now, a day after Xavi exits.

Ok, short post today. See you in the comments. x

You’re the idiot looking for another stupid reason to attack me

I said Mikel needs to dispel the rumors in no uncertain terms to put it away if not it will grow even more wings and fester.

That’s exactly what he did, he put it away decisively
He didn’t do the ‘I’m flattered routine”. He concretely ruled it out, like I wanted him to do.

It was never the rumors, it was going to be the reaction to the rumors that will be the story.

You need to retake O-level economics before you engage me

Hamza

As others have said above Mikel has batted away the Barca links forcefully in his presser today. That being said, there is no chance he wants to go. The guy has spent £650m+ since being appointed. Also I’d argue if he did leave this summer, which he isn’t, Arsenal would be one of the most attractive jobs in world football. – You are in London (so the family is happy as it’s a global city and a cleaner more chilled NYC). – Arsenal is a heritage club and a traditional big 3 club in England, and the biggest club in… Read more »

If Arteta as much as nention this possibility he should not have his contract extended.
Let him go to Barca. Year later he will be at Sky doing Garry Neville. Barca fans are not so nice and forgiving .

Attack you?… Typical hyperbolic nonsense…

I was just pointing out correctly that you got the exact response from Arteta that you wanted…

Now you’ll have to generate a different line of crisis… Which is basically your M.O.

I wouldn’t say that’s attacking you.. More an accurate observation.

RJM

C’mon Mikel….its Barca bro!
You might never get another chance!!!

rollen

Pedro is absolutely right.
Arsenal management will see this fake or true links and very likely give Arteta more power and money even if he fails again.
At least we are better run than United lol

Bob N16

‘Fails again’ – we’ve failed 45 times out of the last 50 to win the league. Sometimes finishing 2nd should be considered a success, even if it’s in the ‘first loser’ position!

Bob N16

‘it’s Arteta glorification blog’ – not so much in the comments!

There are many more posters who appear to be against Arteta than who are massive fans. A lot of us feel he’s doing a decent job but has not done enough yet to justify him being hyped, sitting on the fence if you prefer that cliche!

Pedro

Well said, Hamza!

Good point Cicero, panic over…

Not looking good for Gabriel and Rice tomorrow.

Dissenter

Barcelona are a proper shit club
Any manager taking that job would have a moral conflict about defending them because they have done some really crappy stuff like paying off referees, owing players and spending huge chunks of their future revenue to pay for signings today.
They do know how to use the media to unsettle people which was shy it was great that Mikel refuted the rumors in very clear terms.
Now they can go unsettle some other club.

Pedro

Quite something to read Arteta apparenlty has bad talent ID. It’s like people don’t watch Arsenal at all.

Bob N16

‘Not looking good for Gabriel and Rice tomorrow.’
I’ll give you odds that they both will be playing tomorrow.

Bob N16

‘Bukayo Saka has scored just once and provided no assists in his last seven Arsenal appearances in all competitions.’

That’ll change for the better tomorrow.

Chris

Barcelona should go ahead and hire Mourinho. Would absolutely love to see that.

Siddeeq

I will give you the odds tomorow we draw with Nottingham

Ernest Reed

Barca are a total shitshow of a trainwreck, why on earth would Arteta, let alone anyone else want to join such a horrifically dysfunctional organization?

Arteta is going nowhere, he’s not finished the job at Arsenal. For him to leave would make him a total mercenary merchant with zero credibility.

Pierre

Bob “I’ll have to admit, I have begun to worry about Odegaard” . The penny will drop with others eventually as he continues to refuse/delay or fail to spot the chance to play the killer ball to our striker.. Rich seems to think that Havertz and Odegaard never have the opportunities to play a defence splitting pass like the ones Eddie and Vieira have played this season, but for me that is just making excuses for their lack of creativity as I have seen Odegaard especially refuse/ delay or fail to spot the more difficult killer ball on numerous occasions… Read more »

As I posted earlier today the story about Arteta leaving is nonsense. We can now focus on matters which are frankly more important. Arsenal were top of the league at Christmas despite not playing particularly well this season. We then lost three games in quick succession against Aston Villa, West Ham and Fulham. This happened despite dominating play in these games and cost us our top place. The main reason was that we could not put the ball in the net. Bluntly this was a repeat of what happened in the later stages of last season when we looked like… Read more »

Pedro – their (cos it’s two of them) talent ID has been pretty good until the mad rush of blood to buy Havertz and Raya. And if you ignore Willian! For 100m we should and could have done better (memories of the 2016 Xhaka, Mustafi and Peres summer)

Rich

Pierre It’s not excuses… Just off the top of my head I can remember Ødegaard putting Eddie + Trossard through on goal in the 2nd half against Wolves. Eddie smashing the inside of the post, and Trossard fluffing his lines… Both those chance were created once we were ahead, with the opposition chasing the game in the 2nd half. It’s basic common sense, that most of the spaces that open up, are based on where the game is played, and which team needs to take more risk, or take attacking initiative. Its the technical + physical qualities of our outfield… Read more »

Tom

Pierre, I like Eddie but what killer balls are you talking about.
His assist to Martinelli vs Crystal palace was a simple 15 yard ball between two defenders you could drive a semi through?
His assist to Havertz vs Brighton just as easy.
Both plays just past the half way line with defenders playing high up the pitch.
Rich absolutely has a point.
As a matter of fact there was one killer pass in the Brighton game and it was from Odegaard to Saka with outside of foot, threading the needle on 32 minutes.
Look it up.

Barcelona should go ahead and hire Mourinho. Would absolutely love to see that.

That’s funny and not a ridiculous shout 🙂

Talk of Arteta leaving for Barca is utterly ridiculous, and clearly anyone touting the thought is agenda driven.

Arteta knows he’s at a Club where he has the chance to create a legacy.

Get behind him, and see where we get to.

William has done okay at Fulham.

Forrest will be starting mostly a depleted team tomorrow night as–
All six Forest players at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations have qualified for the knockout stages with their countries:
• Ibrahim Sangaré, Serge Aurier, Wily Boly | Ivory Coast
• Ola Aina | Nigeria
• Moussa Niakhaté, Cheikhou Kouyaté | Senegal

As well as–
Taiwo Awoniyi, Anthony Elanga and Felipe all returning from injuries and may not be cleared or fit to play yet.

Nuno Tavares will be held out as an Arsenal loanee.

“…but for me that is just making excuses for their lack of creativity as I have seen Odegaard especially refuse/ delay or fail to spot the more difficult killer ball …” Pierre – I wonder if ode is under instructions to not play the ‘difficult killer ball’ this season because he had a bunch of assists last season and he just didn’t suddenly lose the ability over the summer. Maddison and Cole palmer are streets ahead of Odegaard when it comes to receiving the ball in the final third and playing the killer ball.

Interesting numbers Rich–

Pool converting goals/chances at 21%
City 23%
Arsenal 20%
Sp*rs 23%
Brighton 20%
Villa 23%
========

The differences are starker when it’s the ratio of goals/shots– as Pool and Arsenal are 1&2 as the volume shooting teams– but Arsenal rank 7th and Pool 10th for goal/shot conversion– which definitely passes the eye test. Pool taking almost 100 more shots than Arsenal too.

Ødegaard in the PL this season ranks:
99% for shot creating actions.
97% for Key passes.
99% for through balls.

Arsenal joint 2nd for open play chances this season.

Also our counter press is truly elite, pressing becomes easier if we make the pitch smaller.

Havertz is in the team because he’s a duel monster.

https://x.com/markrstats/status/1751314775588639193?s=46

Alonso in this clip explains why we do what we do, and what the thinking is behind the way teams try to control the game high up the pitch:

Benkind

Rich

Odegaard this season 3 assists in 18 games in the Premier league.

Ranks 99% and has 3 assists is why the eye test is important. When was the last defence splitting pass or amazing assist odegaard made. I still easily remember outrageous assists from cesc and ozil.

Pierre has had the last laugh with respect to Odegaard. He warned us but here we are. If Arteta was more bold he would play Saka as 10 in some matches. Like shearer said, out front line are too rigid in their position, they hardly switch to confuse opponents.

Siddeeq

‘If only’ and ‘what if’ statements……

Ramdas

Jamie,
Emery would do better at Barca than Arteta because short-term he’s def. a better coach, and short-term is all Barca cares for nowadays.

Mourinho going to Barca is 0%.

Like they got Lewa and Gundogan on a free, they will get a decent manager, but he will fail because Barca want trophies AND beautiful style, and they just haven’t the players for that (or the money to buy them).

Ramdas

I think Barca might go for the Basque Bournemouth manager.

TallestTiz

Is Rice and Gabriel really missing out tonight?

This would be the easiest money to make off the bookies. But I’m unsure of our capacity if those two are missing. Partey isn’t in the squad apparently.

Bilbo

Ramdas,

I’m not sure they could afford the compensation to the club, he’s just started a new multi year contract. There are a few managers in La Liga who have shown talent yet would still see current day Barca as a dream – Michel at Girona and the Las Palmas coach – and would be available for much less to keep the seat warm whilst they try and sort their shit out.

Bilbo

Tallest Tiz,

Jorginho and Kiwior should be able to deputize against Forest, esp given their current issues (FFP Furore, injuries, Afcon absences, general form under nuno). It would be interesting to see Kiwior play CB for once, to be honest.

TallestTiz

Bilbo

Forest would be more unpredictable with such absences.
History has it that Rashford made his name against Arsenal as a teenager

Siddeeq

Spurs, Notingham, Everton, westham have the highest EPL tackles won.

It will be a bad idea to have a midfield of Jorginho and Ode against Nottingham.
We had Partey and Timber when we beat them at home.

Siddeeq

From setpiece situations.

Bob N16

Small point Sid, Forest are never referred to as just ‘Nottingham’.

Not sure ‘tackles won’ is a particularly significant stat- points won clearly more significant!

TallestTiz

I would be scared if we started with Jorginho + Odegaard, if I’m being honest.

Just in a fix and need to raise some £800 between today and Thursday. So I was thinking we would have a full squad for easy money.

Bilbo

Tallest Tiz,

Erm maybe? What it does tell me is a team that is fighting for a drop is going to have to rely on players the previous manager(s) didn’t think were better than the players they have away. So, yes, maybe this game is an opportunity for an England-worthy talent about to break through. Or journeymen are chucked in unfamiliar positions and get pillaged.

Rich

Benkind You seem to misunderstand the way we play, what we do, why we do it, and why and when spaces tend to open up, and for what reason. Arsenal are the most positionally aggressive team in Europe, we control the game in the attacking and middle thirds, not just for offensive reasons, but also defensive reasons. Football has changed from 15 years ago… But particularly over the last 6 seasons in the PL. Klopp believes the best playmaker in football is the counter press, better than any No10.
