EMILE SMITH ROWE – SHOP WINDOW OR LEFT #8 AUDITION?

by .

Happy Boxing day to you ALL!

How was your Christmas? We had a good one. My brother and dad bullied me back into UK drinking habits and I am feeling the pain. Brits never stop, they don’t forgive fly-tipping, and they move at Martinelli-like speed on the drinks. Tough comeback for me.

Gotta say, personally, going to Boxing Day games has never been my cup of tea. The games feel like a bloated hangover; no one is really in the mood, and you can end up with some unfestive moments. Like Newcastle having trouble with Forest right now (2-1 down after a great finish from Chris Wood).

I’m happy to watch others fall to those moments today. Villa vs United could be very spicy. EtH under huge pressure, Unai Emery on top of the world… it’ll be very interesting to see if there’s has a new ownership bounce. We’ll talk about that Radcliffe deal at another date, seems very interesting, though not particularly game-changing.

Arsenal news is in short supply at the minute. We have some problems to deal with. Kai Havertz is out injured, so there are some decisions to be made against West Ham.

My heart says this would be a great moment to bring Emile Smith Rowe into the mixer. He’s been sitting on our bench for a few games now, he’s perfect for a team that’ll defend hard, and try to constrict space. Emile, at his best, is an output monster, and we’d all love to see if he can do what Granit and Kai have showed us over the last year. I’d love him to be the deputy there.

However, my head says Arteta is finished with him and he’ll go with Trossard there again. Emile is great fodder for FFP numbers because he’s pure profit.

That’s part of my issue. Arteta has to play the best team he has available, but I do wish he’d sometimes consider the transfer value of players he crashes when perfectly acceptable players land on his shitlist. Emile was a £55m player 3 seasons ago. Now we’d be lucky to get £25m for him. A crime when you consider the output Hojland and Antony have between them, but par the course in a league that doesn’t value players that can actually do it at the highest level.

Still, can’t be too harsh. Everyone knows the Emile issues are about availability. He can’t string a month together. So he can’t be part of our squad. I’ll be gutted when he goes, but injury issues don’t get better with age, and he has been plagued with them his whole career.

It’ll also be interesting to see if there are any other rotations in the offing. Rumors keep circling that Thomas Partey is going to be ready, they all tend to come from the same guy who is guessing with authority online (poorly). Partey had barely trained before last week. I’d be surprised to see him put in the team before the break. Quite mad that he will have sat out the first half of the season, but he’ll no doubt play every game of a successful Ghana campaign at AFCON. When will Asia and Africa bring their comps back onto a more global calendar?

Back to Partey. Better bet for Arsenal would be to bring him back after the international competition and make sure he heads there in pristine condition. We’ll wait to see whether that happens. Same with Tomiyasu who could technically rejoin the squad early, but the question is whether it’s worth risking him for games we should win. The long game is Partey and Tomi for the run-in… don’t do anything to jeopardize that would be my vision.

This West Han game will be a feisty one. Arteta vs Moyes is always a good father vs son joust. We also have the Declan vs the club the birthed him a career at the highest level. I’d love him to get a rest, but no chance that happens in a game he’ll want to be part of.

After getting such a great result at Anfield, it’s important not to blow that point by failing against a West Ham team that can be got at. They’ve conceded 30 so far this season, but it is important to note that they’re equal points against Newcastle (as of 60 minutes against Forest). That’s pretty decent.

You also have to look at their team. Bowen has the same goals as Salah this season and looks on fire. They have Kudus and Paqueta in their starting 11. Two absolutely outstanding players that signify the strength of the league. Then you have Moyes, a manager who just gets the job done.

We should have enough in a home game. I’m heading in for this one. I can’t wait for it. It was the friendliest London derby of the lot until the summer when West Ham fans slandered us and pined for their best player in a generation to go to Manchester City.

Arsenal has to deliver retribution for those harsh words online. We have to show them why we’re the biggest show in the Premier League right now. We also have to protect my feelings by staying ahead of Unai Emery who will probably destroy a very, very damaged United side this evening.

Right, short one today. Get on the podcast.

Tierney missed 9 games on loan. I like him but he’s not reliable enough.

WengerEagle

Martinelli’s confidence is on the floor right now so I’m not sure sticking him up top and making him the focal point of supporter’s frustration if he spurns chances in front of goal would be a great idea.

We need a Jan signing and a real lift to the forward unit. Last season Trossard helped provide that and he only cost 25m.

WengerEagle

I don’t understand what’s happened to the striking talent around Europe, it’s very bizarre to see. Haaland and Mbappe aside there just has been fuck all coming through. I mean Borja Mayoral and Solanke are the 7th and 8th top scorers in the top 5 European leagues respectively. Just look at the state of even the Euro elite’s CF situation excluding Man City who have Haaland and Alvarez. Barca have the corpse of Lewandowski and are relying on an 18 year old in Roque to come in and hit the ground running from the Brazilian league. Real Madrid have relied… Read more »

And yet those clubs are winning titles. Suggests having the ‘star CF’ isn’t the way, and instead it’s having a squad with little fall off to the players on the bench. Sort that and we get over the line.

raptora

The players on my radar would be
– £100m players – CF Osimhen (£100-£110m release clause I think), LW/CF Leao
– £50-60m players – CM Zubimendi (£53m release clause), LW/RW Nico Williams (just signed an extension which is a bummer that might raise his price)
– value transfer – CB Jorrel Hato (before he’s resigned)

I’m noticing RB Jeremie Frimpong as well which might allow Timber to go to LB even though I’m not a big supporter of that idea.

Samesong

Mikel I agree 💯

We don’t need a world class striker to win the league just someone that knows where the goal is.

Rich

Pedro Neto is quality… But too much risk. The player we need in Januarybis Zubimendi… But the market opportunity for January is Conor Gallagher, I’d happily sacrifice Smith Rowe for Gallagher. As much as I like Patino, I’d sacrifice him as well… We’d likely regret it down the line… But Gallagher improves the squad on Day-1. An out an out No8 isn’t a priority… But the market doesn’t always offer what we need, when we need it. If we can carve open the space…. I’d take Gallagher in a heartbeat. Overall we were decent enough last night, just lost the… Read more »

I’m not even talking about having a big star CF that scores 25+ league goals a season. Even the Firmino types aren’t knocking around either.

I do believe that Jesus is similar to Firmino but the problem is Marti and Saka blow hot and cold and lack the consitency and ruthlessness of Salah and Mane who were in their prime at the time.

WengerEagle

I’d take Toney. That’s probably the move I would make at this stage

Samesong

Rich

I disagree I didn’t think Rice was that bad. Apart from the penalty give away.

MG42

Mr. Serge
No joy on my part as AFC lost but I can see the Super fans are in damage control over this shit show that Arteta served up.

Freddie Ljungberg

WE

“Kudus is fucking quality, why were we not in for him at 40m?”

Not many here were interested in him in the summer, I got a lot of pushback when calling for us to make that signing. Could have played either wing, false 9 or left 8.

Rap

Would add Boniface to that list of strikers, not sure how much he’d be though.

TR7

If not for the betting scandal, we would have gone for Toney in the summer itself and I bet we would have at least 6-8 points more.

Given how bad our finishing has been Arteta probably try to get Toney in Jan. Toney is a really good target man mold of striker.

Dissenter

Left to me, we change Jesus and Eddie in the summer. I have never been a fan of the Jesus-makes-our- attack-tick nonsense. He flatters to deceive a lot with his overall jack-of-all-trade footballing abilities.
He’s too expensive to be a rotating winger, he’s one of those players on 200k+ weekly. He’s not a number 9
Eddie is our highest goal scorer, we should geta decent fee for him is he can reach double figures t his season.
We need to do a proper reset of our attack this summer

Foxy

Rich but where would Conor G fit into the team? Arteta seems pretty committed to a Rice, Havertz, Odegaard midfield and has already shown he doesn’t do rotation

Dissenter

This summer, unless we advance very far in the CL and earn big money from it, we will have to sell some of our better payers to improve the squad.
We’ve spent a lot of money recently on transfers and more importantly, on wages.
We must have at least 8 players earning around the 200k weekly wages scale. Even our back up goalie, Eddie and `Reiss are on around 100k weekly..

Samesong

“Not many here were interested in him”

I definitely was. Mentioned him a few times and I’m sure Habesh Gooner did also.

Samesong

Freddie

Are you aware that Boniface signed a new contract until 2028?

Dissenter

This g Ivan Toney talk is a bit ridiculous
One thing, he hasn’t played a competitive game since May 2023. He has to come in attain match fitness, and then adapt to a new club’s playing approach.
Secondly, can we even afford him right now, considering that Brentford will want a king’s ransom ?

WengerEagle

Samesong

Not to mention they are in a legitimate title race in the Bundesliga and Boniface is a key part of that.

No chance Alonso would sanction a sale mid-season.

“””Rice’s worst game in an Arsenal shirt, but not overly critical, otherwise he’s been excellent…””‘

I think , if you take Rice away from the team- we would struggle for top 6 this season

we have x 4 top players – the rest are all ironically below West Ham United current level.

1.Rice
2.Timber?
3. Saliba
4. Saka

I d take Bowen, JWP, Paquetta, Kudus, Greek lad, Soucek, Emerson over our other lot

Freddie Ljungberg

Samesong So 2, and me. Not that many is it. So many posters were so dead set on only signing “PL ready” players that anyone from another league were instantly dismissed no matter how obvious their quality was. Feels like Arteta has the same mindset which is why our transfers has been so expensive lately and our budget to improve from here on is compromised. We have to get better at spotting talent that isn’t playing week in week out in England and costs 5-10 times as much because of it. It’s not sustainable to build your whole squad with… Read more »

WengerEagle

I liked Kudus too Freddie.

And Mousa Diaby.

Freddie Ljungberg

Samesong

New contract? He just signed for Leverkusen in the summer, that’s until 2028. Probably still cheaper than Toney with higher upside, younger and no questionable character traits.

WE

I’m not talking mid season, can’t see us moving for a striker until the summer anyway.

WengerEagle

Samesong

Was there not talk of us signing some striker from Brazil recently enough?

Freddie Ljungberg

“So where’s Edu the Brazilian talent spotter?”

He can spot as many talents as he wants, if Arteta only wants PL ready it doesn’t matter because that’s what he gets.

Freddie Ljungberg

WE

Marcos Leonardo

Looks promising but probably not ready to hit the ground running so that’s likely not happening.

Mikel Coneteta

Kudus is another that fucks off next month for Afcon. I’m sorry to be that guy, but weighing up a player on that merit is absolutely justified.

Africa holds back its development of talent by continually aligning their nations cup outside of European league scheduling.

Liverpool lose Salah next month and that will test them massively. A team like ours can’t afford those losses imo.

Freddie Ljungberg

I’d rather be without Kudus for 1 month every 2 years than having Havertz full time, or ESR part time, or Vieira at any time.

Chris

If football goes around in cycles then I hope to one day see the return of the little and large two up front, or just two strikers up front at all.

All the great strikers from the 90s/00s from abroad (not even counting the ones already in the prem). Ronaldo, Vieri, Trezeguet/Inzaghi/Shevchenko/Morientes, Crespo,
Salas, Batistuta, Kluivert just some of the ones I can think of off the top of my head. Is the art of the striker a dying one? Tika taka and false 9s has ruined my romantic view of the game hahah 😄

Samesong

Is this stat true that Saka has scored only twice away in 27 games?

Dissenter

I keep reading people [not on Le-grove saying “we need to spend big in January”, like there’s a printing press for money somewhere.
It’s not going to happen, we have to take stock of all the spending we’ve done first. Figure out what’s working and what needs to go.

MG42

Fuck me, the word rebuild starts to appear more often, give me a break in 4 years at the helm how many rebuilds does Arteta need. Klopp did his midfield rebuild in 1 season, that is the bar, but we have an apprentice as a manager that does the trial and error method for rebuilds. Jesus is a backup striker who spends more time on the ground trying to con the Ref than actually scoring. Saka started to copy him with a blatant dive. When our attack is relying on goals through Ref deception you know our attack is shitty… Read more »

Gonsterous

Maybe we should go back to martinelli at CF. Just do anything different, arteta FC is way too predictable.

Jesus at LW and marti up top or Eddie up top. Arteta tries to keep his favorites happy so his subs and start 11 are always the same.

Un

Rap

No
Martinelli isn’t even close to rvp in terms of striking a ball
That’s a joke
Rvp was one of the best strikers of a ball in premier league history
He could strike a ball with his right foot better than Martinelli can with either

Siddeeq

Klopp has won the EPL and CL with Mane and Sala though AFCON is holding back African talent.

Did i mention Chelsea: Drogba, Essien

Theres also Leicester with Mahrez, Ngolo

Im telling you for free!

Spanishdave

Our forwards are all below par.
The question is why?
Saka is poor really there is no plan to back him up when he attacks.
Martinelli needs to vary his play, Jesus is too deep .
Arteta is a defender so attack play is his weakness.
Last year we played with more flair, this year it’s slow tippy tappy.
Won’t win Jack shit this way

Un

I’m up for trying martinelli at cf as I think he’s not suited to winger due to lack of ability there within our game plan but I’m not having any of that similar to rvp in how he shoots talk

Siddeeq

Our attacking players are Not the problem.

Generational is holding them back, like he did with Auba and Ozil

Siddeeq

Defending from the front sounds sophisticated.

Scoring from the back would sound Generational.

Gonsterous

We are great with possession, but have too many players thag slow down play. Too many touches to reach the other side of the pitch. Ode, saka, zinny, marti, Jesus. All players that need to take 3-4 touches before passing the ball again. Not a great system to beat a low block. More one touch football and triangle passing to beat the press and low block will benefit the team.

Dissenter

West Ham played without their best center back pairings
Paqueta was off very early

….and yet they beat us rather too easily

We could have played for another 90 mons and still not scored

Dissenter

Martinelli needs to be benched, stop the favoritism
He’s been dog shit and out of confidence

raptora

Ye, Diss. I read posters call Mavro shit. And even if he’s shit it didn’t look we put him or WH’s defence under much pressure really. It was a perfect game for Moyes.

WengerEagle

RVP was a freak, though, maybe the cleanest strike of a football of any player to have ever played in the PL.

You’re talking as if Martinelli is another Gervinho/Welbeck perennial slicer/scuffer of the ball which isn’t the case.

WengerEagle

Polite reminder that we sold Mavropanos for 2m euros.

Dissenter

I’m ranting a bit now
I’m afraid of the Fulham game
I think Palhina will counter every thing Rice can provide and Iwobi is another former player that will expose our weakness on the left.
The same problems that bedeviled us yesterday will remerge on Sunday. If we concede early- we lose

Spanishdave

Confidence up front is shot.
Arteta must change something but he doesn’t know how.
Get DB10 on the team.

People losing their minds over this 2 nil ( nearly 3nil) home westham defeat……..not me though, I’m still laughing at Emery losing 3:2 away to United.
Hopefully Pedro tweets something cute about that.

RVP had 2 great seasons scoringwise 2011-2013.
Otherwise, he was shite. Martinelli is still only
22 years old.

I’ve consistently maintained that Jesus is a problem from last season. Only need to look at the results and goals scored statistics to back this up. Last season we were toiling through games and scraping with an odd goal for most of the early matches. Then Jesus got injured and in came Nkietieh and then Trossard. This was the period where our attacking was purring and we were steamrolling teams. Then this guy came back from injury and our goals dried up and results took a nosedive. Why does Artete not allow saka and Martinelli to switch wings when things aren’t working ? They just stick to the same tactics all through the game. Another thing that’s now obvious is we do miss partey, as good as rice is , he hasn’t got the defence splitting pass in his armoury and worse still he seems to hold back from driving into the penalty box or at least making runs from midfield. While many people want a new striker and think our attackers are not good enough, I don’t think that’s our biggest problem. I think the elephant in the room is that we don’t create enough chances. If you get less than 3 XG from 30 shots, it means each shot had less than 0.1 XG.

Those are not quality chances.

For contest, West Ham had almost 2 XG from 8 shots.

MG42

Let me put it ìn perspective quoting the Athletic:
Arsenal’s 81 shots in 4 matches have produced 3 goals – wastefulness is becoming a theme. Of the last 4 matches we won 1. Not hysterical but factual.

Marko

If the club refuses to sell Nketiah and is happy with the forward options it’s got then when the inevitable collapse happens they can’t be surprised in the slightest

MG42

From McNicholad an avid Arsenal fan:
“Arsenal’s first-choice front three of Gabriel Jesus, Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka have a combined 10 top-flight goals. Jarrod Bowen of West Ham has 11 on his own.”
“These things can’t be put down to variance, bad luck or an off-night…this defeat felt self-inflicted.”

Sounds about right.

Our wins are typically labored
Even when we win, the score line never reveals the true state of the game.
Against Brighton at home, that game could easily have gone couth had Pascal Gross buried that late chance
The difficulties at Luton are well documented
Against Wolves at home, we were scrambling at the end

Something ain’t right about our set-up. Everything’s operating at small margins so it doesn’t take much to upset the cart.

Rich

Dissenter

You’re living in cloud cuckoo land again.

The PL is a giant scrap… Liverpool drew at Luton, plenty of teams are having issues there, City only just scrapped a win there.

We dominated the game against Brighton, who smashed Spurs 4-2 last night.

Go back to the invincible’s, and there’s this grandeur idea that we rolled every team, every week… We didn’t.

Wolves have beaten City, Spurs, took a point against Villa, were genuinely robbed against United.

You’re just being a giant drama queen as usual.

Graham62

Am I concerned about what I’m seeing? Yes, I am.
Despite us being up there, things are not right.
Jesus was bought to score goals.
Those were guilt edged chances he fluffed last night.
The fluency that should be there, just isn’t.
Players that should be given more minutes like ESR, Nelson, Nketiah and Trossard, are not being given that opportunity.
Arteta’s failures to rotate at the right times is becoming a problem.
We are becoming predictable and one dimensional.
Those supporters who don’t see it are in denial.

Guns of SF

all roads lead to a new striker ….

Aaron

Ben, Not exactly mate! We are being coached to not create chances. xG by a thousand cuts does not make for actual goals. AFC ain’t winning anything if the second half of the season finishes with AFC scoring goals from 12th position in the league from open play, take that to the bank. Toney, or any other proper striker will get on the end of a few of the headers that Jesus missed, that is for damn sure, along with actually creating something by running at defenders. Something that is either being coached out of Saka and Martin or they… Read more »

Nketiah has it good at arsenal, I wonder if he would even agree to being sold. Jesus going to be out injured at least 1/3 season so he guaranteed starts on title challenging team but if he join lesser team to be their number one there little chance of trophies unless unlikely league cup win or somesuch. As long as Jesus is our number one, our number 2 guaranteed lots of game time.

Arsenal need to watch Leverkusen and how they move the ball. While facing a low block they spread themselves around the pitch so there’s less congestion. They then move the ball with the least amount of touches as possible and always take the shot immediately the opportunity is there not looking for a better opening.

This means Ode, Rice and Haverts need to confine themselves to two touches max and Martinelli,Jesus and Saka to shoot on site

This season we’re facing the deepest defensive line in Europe… The opposition have woken up to the fact that we’re now competitive, and if they give us space, we can hurt them. We’re technically minus 4 from corresponding fixtures.. But win our next 3 against Fulham,… Read more »
