EMILE SMITH ROWE – SHOP WINDOW OR LEFT #8 AUDITION?

by .

Happy Boxing day to you ALL!

How was your Christmas? We had a good one. My brother and dad bullied me back into UK drinking habits and I am feeling the pain. Brits never stop, they don’t forgive fly-tipping, and they move at Martinelli-like speed on the drinks. Tough comeback for me.

Gotta say, personally, going to Boxing Day games has never been my cup of tea. The games feel like a bloated hangover; no one is really in the mood, and you can end up with some unfestive moments. Like Newcastle having trouble with Forest right now (2-1 down after a great finish from Chris Wood).

I’m happy to watch others fall to those moments today. Villa vs United could be very spicy. EtH under huge pressure, Unai Emery on top of the world… it’ll be very interesting to see if there’s has a new ownership bounce. We’ll talk about that Radcliffe deal at another date, seems very interesting, though not particularly game-changing.

Arsenal news is in short supply at the minute. We have some problems to deal with. Kai Havertz is out injured, so there are some decisions to be made against West Ham.

My heart says this would be a great moment to bring Emile Smith Rowe into the mixer. He’s been sitting on our bench for a few games now, he’s perfect for a team that’ll defend hard, and try to constrict space. Emile, at his best, is an output monster, and we’d all love to see if he can do what Granit and Kai have showed us over the last year. I’d love him to be the deputy there.

However, my head says Arteta is finished with him and he’ll go with Trossard there again. Emile is great fodder for FFP numbers because he’s pure profit.

That’s part of my issue. Arteta has to play the best team he has available, but I do wish he’d sometimes consider the transfer value of players he crashes when perfectly acceptable players land on his shitlist. Emile was a £55m player 3 seasons ago. Now we’d be lucky to get £25m for him. A crime when you consider the output Hojland and Antony have between them, but par the course in a league that doesn’t value players that can actually do it at the highest level.

Still, can’t be too harsh. Everyone knows the Emile issues are about availability. He can’t string a month together. So he can’t be part of our squad. I’ll be gutted when he goes, but injury issues don’t get better with age, and he has been plagued with them his whole career.

It’ll also be interesting to see if there are any other rotations in the offing. Rumors keep circling that Thomas Partey is going to be ready, they all tend to come from the same guy who is guessing with authority online (poorly). Partey had barely trained before last week. I’d be surprised to see him put in the team before the break. Quite mad that he will have sat out the first half of the season, but he’ll no doubt play every game of a successful Ghana campaign at AFCON. When will Asia and Africa bring their comps back onto a more global calendar?

Back to Partey. Better bet for Arsenal would be to bring him back after the international competition and make sure he heads there in pristine condition. We’ll wait to see whether that happens. Same with Tomiyasu who could technically rejoin the squad early, but the question is whether it’s worth risking him for games we should win. The long game is Partey and Tomi for the run-in… don’t do anything to jeopardize that would be my vision.

This West Han game will be a feisty one. Arteta vs Moyes is always a good father vs son joust. We also have the Declan vs the club the birthed him a career at the highest level. I’d love him to get a rest, but no chance that happens in a game he’ll want to be part of.

After getting such a great result at Anfield, it’s important not to blow that point by failing against a West Ham team that can be got at. They’ve conceded 30 so far this season, but it is important to note that they’re equal points against Newcastle (as of 60 minutes against Forest). That’s pretty decent.

You also have to look at their team. Bowen has the same goals as Salah this season and looks on fire. They have Kudus and Paqueta in their starting 11. Two absolutely outstanding players that signify the strength of the league. Then you have Moyes, a manager who just gets the job done.

We should have enough in a home game. I’m heading in for this one. I can’t wait for it. It was the friendliest London derby of the lot until the summer when West Ham fans slandered us and pined for their best player in a generation to go to Manchester City.

Arsenal has to deliver retribution for those harsh words online. We have to show them why we’re the biggest show in the Premier League right now. We also have to protect my feelings by staying ahead of Unai Emery who will probably destroy a very, very damaged United side this evening.

Right, short one today. Get on the podcast.

Socrates,

Hear hear mate, been saying this for ages, speed up play, space out, limit the touches, and shoot the damn ball.

Guns of SF

Shoot on site is a simple concept. Why our wingers, cannot do this and insist on crossing is beyond me. many time there is no one to cross to. They need to make something happen on their own more often

SV

07/08 was better. 5 points ahead in February, then a horrific injury to Eduardo and other injuries. But still reached the quarter final of the champions league, being nocked out by Rafa and Babel’s spectacular into-the-box collapse.

The football in the first half of this fixture was the best I’ve seen. And this Walcot/Adebayor goal.

Wenger should not have sold Diarra.

SV

I said after the draw at Anfield that if we do not improve upfront, we’ll be out of the race soon. So, it’s not one game. I’m sticking to my opinion.

SV

I do not understand why we do not press anymore.

SV

What our defeats have in common: we do not react well to conceding first. That’s the area Arteta should fix on the tactical level.

Guns of SF

last season the draw to Pool was our undoing, i hope its not a repeat!

Un 1st – 2022/23 If we could have kept Saliba + Partey available, I think we’d have won the title. 2nd – 2007/08- Brilliant team, played excellent football, but slightly short in the squad, missing out on signing Alonso in 2007 and again in 2009 when he wanted to come, was a big miss, and may have pushed us over the line. In 2007/08 Cesc got injured in a challenged with Alonso, that put him out for 5-6 weeks.. A sliding doors moment. 3rd – 2010/11… Brilliant team, but squad lacking the required depth, Van Persie got injured again… Shame… Read more »

No doubt I was praying hard we got Villa.

Such a blue collar striker, with white collar skills. Would have really helped us.

When Wenger tried to sigh Huan Mata, and he ultimately was lured by Chelsey, I said Wenger was working as Chelsea’ scout (a bit harsh from me, I know). For that, I was called the worst c… on Cultured Left Foot. Those were the days.

SV

Talking about Man City and their 115 charges: they started dissimating us with Ade, Nasri, Sanya, Clichy. The players would just rot on their benches, signed for no other prpose but just to disrupt us. Would they have been able to do it on an even playing field?

Nasri had been the best league player, until they turned his head. After awitching to them, he never recovered as a footballer.

Pierre

Earlier in the season I was showing concern for Odegaard’s lack of creativity , he has now addressed that and is playing close to his best football….he was excellent last night , created 6 chances but he was let down by poor finishing from his team mates. I know he scored 15 non penalty goals last season but I always believed that was a freak season and I doubt he will reproduce such a number again . This season he has 2 non penalty goals in the league, I do expect him to reach somewhere around the 8 mark as… Read more »

Un Maybe it was just the feeling of hope last season From 2016/17 – 2021/22, we could have played those seasons 1,000 times in some type of alternate reality, and we still had no chance of winning the title. I loved the 2007/08 + 2010/11 teams… But this time we’ve secure our best talent, at least for now, and invested further into the team. Whereas the 2010/11 team got looted of all the Crown Jewels. How Wenger finished 3rd in 2011/12 was a miracle, thankfully it was the one season RVP actually stayed fit. Not much between 2007/08 + 2022/23…… Read more »

I doubt Arteta will make wholesale changes for the fulham game on Sunday.
He will probably stick to the tried and trusted , Havertz will come in and trossard will probably replace Martinelli on the left in the hope of reproducing a similar performance as last seasons…

I was wondering what happened to the know nothings who were convinced that Martinelli’s supposed poor form last season was due to Eddie replacing jesus last season.around christmas.
The fact that Martinelli’s form has nosedived since Jesus has come into the side this season appears to have gone unnoticed.

Rich

Pierre I know you don’t think Ødegaard’s role has changed, but it has changed, his heat maps confirm that. He’s doing some of the work Xhaka did in the first + second phase last season, you can see that just by watching the games. We’ve got to hope we can get much more out of Havertz in the 2nd half of the season, there’s a few signs things are clicking into shape… But considering the outlay, we still need to see much more. If he’s going to play as a 2nd striker, we need consistent end -product… 158 goal contributions… Read more »

We’ll see him soon I think.

Pierre

Rich
I just think Odegaard is playing better now., his positional change is only marginal and as shown in his last 6 games he is more than capable of creating chances despite the positional change , and that was always my argument against those making excuses for his lack of creativity…

SV

We have a young learning by doing manager, and some exceptionally talented young players. It’s exciting to watch. The problem is that time is a precious commodity and is limited. Ultimately, our best players will get frustrated and decide to go elsewhere. It’s heart-breaking.

Pierre

Havertz picks up great positions in the box, if his finishing was as good as his ability to find space in the box then he would be worth the money we paid for him.. he will probably reach double figures…just , but from what I have seen so far his heading technique in front of goal is poor and his shooting technique is poor, hopefully it I is just a confidence thing but I have my doubts , but a least he is prepared to keep putting himself in positions to score.. Also , I doubt we would have conceded… Read more »

” The problem is that time is a precious commodity and is limited. Ultimately, our best players will get frustrated and decide to go elsewhere. It’s heart-breaking.”

That’s why it is important to win a trophy this season as the longer we go without a trophy the harder it will be to keep our best players ..

Pierre

Socrates
“This means Ode, Rice and Haverts need to confine themselves to two touches max and Martinelli,Jesus and Saka to shoot on site”

I doubt we will see one and 2 touch football under Arteta as he wants control , and control means possession of the football , one and 2 touch football brings a high risk of losing possession and that is why our build up play is so patient …I can’t see that changing or he would have brought smith rowe in to replace Havertz last night .

Cyril

Do you think killing 30 thousand Palestinians is correct Yet you talk footty shame to you.

Socrates

Yes Aaron, point is we are slow to react to our opponents and how they line up against us. West Ham had a game plan to stifle our opportunities and this was reinforced with the lucky goal they got. At that point Mikel needed to change the game not wait hoping that the dominance on possession would translate into goals. Zinny and Ode should have dropped deeper to create from the back. Rice should have stayed behind them in line with the defense to stop attacks but also make runs with the ball to draw out their defense. Saka needed… Read more »

The Artesunates here need to be ashamed of themselves for not trading their minds. Pedro would write beautiful nonsense praising galaxy brain to the high heaven and these zombies would just lap it up and make a crusade of it. Few of the nonsenses pedro have written in defence of Arteta are ‘Arteta is building a team that would take over once Pep exits Epl’ and that ‘Arteta was sorting out the defence of this team firstly before focusing on the attack’. The defence is still leaking though, so when is he gonna focus on the attack? Arteta has nothing… Read more »

Smith Rowe is clever with his movement and passing and I agree it’s what we needed yesterday as he brings some quick passing which our players in Jesus, Ode and Zinny can easily incorporate in their play.

That loss was down to Mikel

FoxInTheBox

Chill guys. This loss isn’t going to hurt us much. We aren’t going to be anywhere near the title race in April/May.

FoxInTheBox

If a PL team sets out in a season without a CF (yes, Jesus has himself admitted he is not a goalscoring no. 9), then there must have been a plan. Whatever that plan was, it’s not showing. Hence, the plan was a misadventure.

Arsenal doesn’t deserve to be in a title race with such misadventures/blunders.

FoxInTheBox

This arsenal team doesn’t even deserve to be in top4 as it is now. They have been lucky. Most of Arsenal’s opponents gave them too much respect. Hence the scare factor gave Arsenal those additional points. Now that scare is fast weaning away. You can easily predict the next 5 results.

Siddeeq

Make stir fry, pilau and veggies. We are on our way.

Segestical10

@Socrates “Zinny and Ode should have dropped deeper to create from the back. Rice should have stayed behind them in line with the defense to stop at…” We outperformed XG last season cuz Partey broke lines in the 1st phase, giving the ball directly to Saka or freeing Ode gaard or Xhaka to play in btw the lines. Rice, for all his good attributes can’t do that. Havertz is also more of an off-ball operator. Brentford away last season showed Partey’s importance. Odegaard didn’t play the match (won 3 nil). Fabio did nothing apart from scoring . Partey bossed that… Read more »

Pep pwned Arteta big time. Haaland is coming, how much will we get for Jesus? Good that will get us Alvarez. Zinchenko is not good enough, I hear cone boy is looking for an inverting fullback how much can we get for him? Good that will get FFP of our backs.

So now we add to our existing problems a main goal scorer who has 3 and we need now a replacement after spending £45mill 2 years ago. In addition no LB and that is number 1 problem to be solved in the Jan TW. Bye, bye title.

Segestical10

@WE. You’re right. Apart from Osimhen (I like his hunger), there’s really no top available striker. Guirassy has had a hot 18 months at 27. Solanke, a hot half season at 26 (style of play reminds of Giroud – with the 1- touch football around the box). All the rest is potential … Sesko (2nd season at leipzig) Openda has even shown more potential. Boniface (1st season at leverkusen), like him cuz he dribnles for a big man.. City has been through a bad patch and dropped almost 10 points. Sure, some PL teams got better this season and so on… but Pool didn’t bother/ care, took advantage of City’s slump and forced its way to the top of the table, for now… Same cannot be said for Arsenal during the same period and we definitely missed the chance to fully benefit from City’s performance dip and put some buffer in between us. Hard to admit, but Havertz coming back into the team will give us that deep runs to create space for Jesus and Martinelli.
However, against West Ham, I think I heard the commentator mention that one of our players picked up a fifth booking of the season.
Seems that was Gabriel Jesus. Could we be set to try Martinelli upfront if that was the case?

TallestTiz

Meanwhile

Pedro hasn’t posted in a while. I hope all is well?

Dear Gooners half of the season is gone and we have trundled along and are in knockout stage of CL and top 4 in the league. Iam a bit confused and would like my fellow gooners to help me. After every loss the naysayers come here and ask few questions the Arteta acolytes will respond with arguments that we are a good team, it’s one loss and we are good. Iam sure the pattern will go on. What a complete suck job Arsenal FC are. Nothing club. Hoovering around like a fly at a meal. Arteta has to go at the end of this season and we need a proper innovator. I think we really need to go and lay £50m on the table for Toney
That gives us the ability to move Jesus wide or play two up top with Jesus Havertz Toney and Eddie as our options (and trossard who I think has always been far better there than at 8)

Most people getting on the Toney bandwagon all of a sudden. Jesus isn’t good enough as a number 9.

Arsenal need another reset I’m afraid. I wanted Arteta to do something but it’s clear that his brand of football is boring, predictable and not aggressive.

local

As many have said already, there was no need to go from attacking football with high pressing to keep-ball, slow build-up style we have now.

We came close last season and only lost steam after Saliba and Tomi got sidelined at the same time.

Liverpool have won once and come very close twice(1 point difference) with similar style under Klopp.

Siddeeq

Toney is effective for counter attack football and against a high line.

Against teams parking the bus we need an explosive, tricky player. Whether CF or midfielder.

Jesus is finished(the injuries have slowed him), he is now Giroud minus the strength

NORG

Arteta manages like he played.

I’m afraid with the way we play and lack of goals, our fate isn’t in our hands. It’s not even in the hands of our opponents. We have handed our fate to the referees and VAR. Looking at most of our games this season, whether we won, drew or lost didn’t entirely depend on us. Against city, we could have lost, against Newcastle we could have won if f Bruno have been sent off and their goal cancelled. We could have lost by two goals against Liverpool or won by two goals. Welcome to the Fly contingent, because you have the retention and memory of a fruit fly. No one slags the club but only Arteta, the scouting and those responsible for setting up the squad for each season. Arteta and Co knew we had CL and title ambitions this season so he set up this weak squad with a pathetic bench. On top of it he bottled it last season and the season before. You are welcome and hopefully this refreshed your memory.
