ARSENAL VS SEVILLA – MATCH DAY BLOG – SUPERSTAR KIDS MAKE BENCH

by .

As we speak, Arsenal has qualified for the Champions League next round. Sergio Ramos has Sevilla ahead of PSV (2-0). This is great news and might affect how Arteta manages the game this evening. It’ll certainly allow us to take players off early.

It really has been incredible to witness the progression of the side so far this season. The pain I expected us to have when building towards the next phase of development has mostly been visual pain. The football doesn’t feel as fluid, namely, because it’s not.

Mikel Arteta has put the issues down to teams parking buses and taxis. You can’t deny him there, it’s hard playing against top-tier teams like Newcastle, and having to deal with Joelinton dropping in at left back to double up on our wide players.

You also can’t deny that we’re taking a bit of time to develop our attacking game. The football isn’t as BANG-BANG as last season. But it’s also clear that exciting football in the Premier League tends to burn itself out. We’re going to see that happen to Spurs, who lack control, but score a lot of goals and I’m sorry to say it for the Emeryista, we’ll see it there because they’ll get sussed like all Emery teams do. There’s a price to pay for defensive solidity… and that’s a frumpy look to our football right now.

The Champions League game against RC Lens this evening is a revenge tour. We were complacent in the first leg and were taught that Champions League is VERY hard and you can get punished for the smallest of mistakes. That first game was not David Raya’s finest and we exited the away leg as losers.

RC Lens have some good players, but they’re currently in 6th in Ligue 1 and a ways off being PSG levels. We should dispatch of them on our home turf.

Things I’m looking for this evening mainly consist of:

  • No injuries
  • A comfortable evening
  • 3 points so we can play the children in our final game

We have a tricky away game against Wolves this weekend we also need to have in the back of our mind. They have had a lot of bad luck this season and eventually that’ll turn. A 3pm on a Saturday is a nice fixture, but if we lose tonight, that game takes on a different kind of relevance.

The line-up is strong.

Nwaneri and MLS get some time on the Champions League bench. That’s massive for them. Clearly, they are treasured by the club. I do worry that we’re at a stage of our development where kids don’t get minutes. But if we want to keep them we can’t not play them. Or they’ll leave.

The plan here is likely to win early, rotate people on 55 rather than 75.

I’m excited.

This is the Match Day blog.

Get stuck in – then join us for a 5:15pm later On The Whistle.

ENJOY THE GAME x

“It would be sweet as fuck if Arteta won it at his first attempt
Has any manager ever done it? In his first season in the CL? Stats nerds, do your work”

Di Matteo, but he only managed Chelsea from March onwards that season so doesn’t really count.

Davey

I agree 1970 convinced we would still have pissed it with 11 v 11 and going 1-0 down, at that time English teams had too much athleticism for foreign teams even Barca

Jamie

I can’t remember if Porto were in the Europa or the CL when Mourinho took over, but I think he won it first shot with them in 2004.

Un

Jamie

He won the uefa/Europa the season before
Beating Celtic along the way
So yeah maybe Jose too actually

Chris

Didn’t Villa changed managers mid season when they won it in 1982? Also do Matteo as pointed out. We haven’t had much luck in Europe, 2 penalty shoot out defeats in finals I can think of (Valencia and Galatasaray). Nayim last minute fluke goal. I’m also confident we would have won in 2006 if we had 11 against 11. Less said about 2019 EL the better tho! We get to a fair few finals, just got to cross the line more often. That’s why a pragmatic style the likes of which we have employed this season so often can be… Read more »

Chris

Hamburg have also won it as another German team. But we are talking old European cup

Northbanker

Great win and let’s release the kids for PSV

If we win it I think we would be in the inaugural World Club Cup tournament. But that’s way too far away for even thinking about. A whole knock out tournament ahead of us.

Jamie

I think Pep too. Won everything in his first season managing Barca. Cunt.

Davey

I have always thought Arsenal were never a good 2 legged side, we have always been to cavalier and never seem to treat the game as a 180 mins affair Monaco at home a few years back losing 0-2 get a goal back then going hell for leather for an equalizer get done on a late counter to lose 1-3.

Win the away leg 2-0 going out on away goals and don’t get me started on Valencia ouch!

Jamie

Zidane, although only took over Madrid in Jan that season.

There must be a few others..

Jamie

..but he did win the next CL too, so..

Davey / Chris

I was just too young for the 1970 Fairs Cup win and, apart from Parma in 94, Europe has been a tail of woe during my years of support. I can’t complain though, with all the titles and FA Cups I have been lucky enough to enjoy.

Un

Jamie
Ok there goes my theory down the drain
I’m not counting di matteo. Word is that John Terry was the man who lead them to that behind the scenes after a defeat in Napoli or lazio I believe

Davey

It always seems like we are blessed in the FA cup and the league but cursed in the Champions League/ Europe, but when I heard the final was at Wembley on June 1st 2024 I have a gut feeling we are going to win it. I believe our squad will not cope with the league and CL and we will drop to 3rd in the league but glory on the 1 st June. Please let me witness it.

Rich

I just like the fact we’re competitive, and have some exceptional players. We’re not favourites to win it, but we’re certainly not just making up the numbers either. If we can get through to the winter break in January still in a competitive position…. Then either sign a quality versatile midfielder, who can also tuck into midfield from full back…. Or a quality versatile right sided defender in the mould of White. We’ll be in with a good chance of winning something, or at very least competing every 3-4 days at a high level for the duration, and pushing it… Read more »

Un –

It was a good theory. Still, if Tets wins a CL at any point during his Arsenal managerial career, he deserves a statue.

I’ve seen some weird ass people (not on this blog) saying Henry wasn’t a key player in big games Absolute sacrilege Dude won us so many massive games scoring some of the finest goals of his time along the way His turn and volley from outside the box vs Utd is one of the best goals of all time. Outright stunning, straight 10 Players like Henry RVP and Bergkamp are why in hard on my strikers for not scoring enough when they don’t get good service. It’s not that I don’t sympathize and it’s not that I think they wouldn’t… Read more »

Shane MacGowan dead, very sad, loved ‘rum sodomy lash’ but he will live on with best Christmas tune and a couple of other classics.

I kissed my girl by the factory wall”

Un

Jamie

Undoubtedly
And the way we are playing currently in the CL and against city (the best team in the world) I’d say we have a very good shout this season
Yet to click in the league but I’d not give two squirts of shit about league form if we reach by the final
Then it’s anyone’s
I’d be delighted to see city get blown out nice and early though
Hate coming up against Pep
Such a clever analytical mind when it comes to football

Un

Rip Shane
He’s in the big pub in the sky with kirsty McColl. Very sad what happened to her too. Brave mother

For me the goal which should get the most credit should normally be the decisive one (all other things being equal) Like I loved all the goals yesterday but actually it’s havertz and Jesus’ goals which really mattered Havertz takes an early steaming dump on their game plan and Jesus promptly makes it so that the whole ‘sit tight and hit them on the counter Plan’ HAS to go out the window, making it easier than ever to get a third getting that all important first goal and buffer with the second goal just get harder and harder as the… Read more »

V much agree with your points, Rich – watching Arsenal during late AW years and seeing Bayern come up in the draw, the sense of inevitability/ foreboding of the embarrassing men vs boys spanking we were going to get was grim.

I genuinely think we could give anyone a game and that Arteta could put in place a gameplan to win. AW stuck to his principles, which we loved him for at times, but when it went wrong, it was painful.

GoonerDave

jwl
A friend of mine plays the flute as part of a trad music pub group. And he really really loves the sauce. He played with Shane years ago in Wexford and told me that MacGowan was drinking pints of vodka while the lads were drinking pints of stout.

Markymark

Shane McGowan – RIP . In the 90’s it was Arsenal and the Pogues

Un

Jesus’ ability to drop a shoulder, switch feet and direction and generally just sell a defender down the river is priceless in this team
My kind of player
I love watching him on the ball
To think he and the supporting cast are only just gearing up, it’s a mouth watering prospect to see them in full flight together
I expect December to be a fucking great month for us
Still have partey and timber to come back and maybe a jan signing
Great times to be a gooner

Un

Dave

Tell him not to go chopping his fingers off and throwing them at doors and donkeys

kjelli

If Kai havertz scores in the next game my head is gone as Curtis Shaw quote´s regularly..

GoonerDave

Un
I don’t get the reference. Finger chopping + throwing them at stuff?

Un

Dave
You never seen the banshees of inisherin? Very good film. Colin farrel and Brandon Gleason

GoonerDave

Un
Never saw it. I saw a trailer for it and thought it looked a bit cringe! I do like Brendan Gleeson though – he was in The Guard I think. Silly and funny movie.

Un

Gooner
Same director
He did in Bruges and seven psychopaths too
Oh and three billboard’s outside of ebbing Missouri, that and the banshees are his best two films but I like his other stuff too. The sort of humour you can only get from these isles. And maybe New Zealand. They’ve got some good dry/subtle humour going
Definitely give it a go if you like dark comedy or indie. Breath of fresh air in todays climate of super hero junk or Shite diversity pandering woke sequels

Mr Serge

Pierre
I have watched havertz a lot being a ST holder
Yesterday he was more confident and worked his socks off. Defo the best I have seen him play for us. No way he is doing what he was doing 5 games a go. He has much more drive and purpose recently.

Bob N16

Agreed Mr Serge, a couple of times his footwork was absolute class. He keeps things simple which sometimes might appear underwhelming but I’m beginning to get why we bought him!

Bankz

Pep Guardiola and Zidane both won it on their first attempt. DiMateo too did on his first attempt, even though he was a stand in manager for his boss who got sacked midway into the season. I’m more hyped about us taking the premier league seriously this season and going all the way to win it. It’s been too long. Any other trophy that falls in along the way will be considered as “added bonus”. For us to win the champions league, City, Bayern and Madrid need to be avoided until the semis and pray they don’t click if we… Read more »

People getting ahead of themselves, not remembering this same Lens team beat us fairly easy at their turf. Arteta seems to struggle in Europe, especially away from home. The Europa League knockout performances are still imprinted in my head

GoonerDave

Un
I might give it a go in that case.

Chris

I’d actually want to play Bayern at a semi final because I’d be interested to see how we currently match up to them, to be the team who ends Kane’s CL dream would be glorious and also long waited revenge. Also I’d rather play them in a semi final than Real or City. One off game against either of them would be preferable, where we could suffocate the game a bit like we did against City in the league.

Tom

City and Madrid clear favorites for me.
Bayern are too inconsistent but obviously dangerous , still believe we have a better shot at the league where one bad performance won’t cost you everything like it might in Europe.

Chris

Pseudo

Rather than think about the Lens away game, maybe better to think of the accomplished performances in this group, home to PSV and Lens and both games against Sevilla.

I think the style we have used mainly this season will benefit us if we do reach latter stages, so plenty of reasons to be more optimistic than we have been in recent years in Europe, or the back end of Wenger reign where we inevitably were lambs to slaughter for the bigger teams.

WengerEagle

Un, you’re the biggest nerd here.

Best film of 22 in my opinion

🤓 who me??
I’ve been accused of many things in my adult life but very rarely a nerd

WengerEagle

What a win, steamrolled our way to the top of the group in style.

Basically everyone played well, even Havertz is picking it up but by bit which is great to see. He hopefully morphs into a different animal with a bit of confidence behind him.

jwl

“…MacGowan was drinking pints of vodka …”

GoonerDave – that’s funny, the story is that Shane was kicked out of band for being an alcoholic but entire band were alcoholics. Shane was next level apparently, he was a troubled soul.

Un

Chris
I want Madrid
I actually think Bayern would be a worse draw for us
Kane would kill himself over two legs to put us out and reach the CL final
It would be a trophy worthy of his considerable talent and distinguished career though. He deserves a few big ones
He could have won it all 3 times over had he not shown such loyalty which I find commendable and rare today

Un

Eagle
You shat all over Havertz 2-3 weeks ago
I said on the day that I expect better from you

I suppose ‘nerd’ hinges on intelligence Un so I’ll give you that one.

Not so either
Was clearly a lad lacking confidence and is sure of what his game even is let alone how to apply it in such a quality team like ours
I’ve noticed him growing more purposeful in the last 4-5 games before the weekend
But hey, when you got the eye you got the eye
We can’t all be nerds 😎

Tom

Un Lol, at least WEagle is consistent. He said Havertz was shit before the transfer rumors and stuck to his guns after the deal went through.
You on the other hand said he was shit when it looked like a click bait but did a 180 afterwards.

GoonerDave

Amazing what a bit of confidence does. Kai played well and looked an Arsenal player for the first time since we signed him. Let’s see if he can get a bit of form going. He’s got bags of talent and is a good physical size. He’d be a great asset if he gets a bit of consistency going.
Thank God we didn’t sign Mason Mount. I know he’s had injury problems but he hasn’t done well so far and may not get much better.

What I meant by it was I’m a bit bored of your shtick on here if I’m honest. Your banter is non-existent and I picture you as a remarkably boring individual in real life away from your playground of internet anonymity.

Marko

Yeah I wouldn’t go too overboard with the Arteta winning the champions league in his first go stuff. Still need improvement in offensive performances before that can happen. And no beaten up a poor Lens at home doesn’t mean we’ve turned a corner just yet. Convincing win against wolves might though

Marko

In saying that I think we’re better geared up for Europe. Less teams park the bus especially in the latter stages. The only issue that might hold us back is the tinkering and formations from the manager

X haka

A criminally underrated movie, In Bruges.
Fiennes, Gleeson and Farrell and Martin Mcdonagh.

Alarming news in the Telegraph about this anonymous footballer.
Mind you after the Mendy case, you don’t know what to believe.

Tom

Not to rain on anyone’s parade after a five star performance but the total market worth of our three rivals is about half of Arsenal’s.
Topping the group was a prerequisite I should think.

Un

Tom

You mean weagle was consistently incorrect while I was incorrect occasionally? Wonderful observation as ever

I don’t ever recall claiming that Havertz wouldn’t come good but please, by all means, go and find the comment you claim I made

You think? So why is Manchester United not top of their group then? Why didn’t Barcelona play Real Madrid in the final last year? Why doesn’t Real Madrid win every year? People get hung up on names – there are no guarantees. Teams have off years and on years.

Un

Also
Are nerds boring? Isn’t geek chic the new thing for ladies? Can’t imagine weagle would know much about that considering he claims to watch Estonian division 3 when he can

Tom

Un, that wasn’t even the funny bit.
Sal saw the Havertz to Arsenal rumors and asked the comments what they thought.
I chimed in saying I wouldn’t mind him in an Arsenal shirt, to which you replied anyone thinking Havertz was worth a shot should stop watching football.

Manu U topping the Bayern group ?!. Surely you’re having a laugh.
Bayern haven’t lost a Cl group game in ages.

Arsenal were top four CL favorites, I believe, before the ball was kicked, so you’d assume topping our group was expected.

You don’t go from zero to hero in one step, that’s not really what happens in life right? Sport is no exception. It usually takes multiple attempts, failures, learning from failure and finally succeeding.

Arsenal were never gonna win the title last season because we never even in contention previous years. Inexperience, nerves and pressure are very real things.

Same way Arsenal are not gonna win the CL this time after not even being in the competition for the last many years. How many failures did it take City? How many attempts is it taking PSG?

MidwestGun

Un .. not sure you can be calling out people with your horrible hot takes on Big Gabby… who never even came close to being as bad as Havertz has been at times. And defenders are constantly under pressure. And now he is one of our best players game after game. Thought he was incredible yesterday… better than Saliba even. And has gotten better with the ball at his feet.

MidwestGun

Really if Havertz can come good… we have a solid… solid team …. First 11. And 13 really when you throw in Trossard and TT. 14 if you count Partey or Jorginho. It’s just about managing injuries at this point and getting thru Afcon and the Asian Cup missing some players. Still would like to add a midfielder in January or a striker depending on availability for insurance.

Bilbo

Mate, the ability for you guys to recall things you disagree with months/ years on is matched only by my wife. Fckkkk

salparadisenyc

Take a bow Shane MacGowan you beautiful pirate, the streets of Kilburn, lower Manhattan and Dublin are belting out Dirty old Town for ya captain our captain.

Guns of SF

Maghales does not get enough credit on here. Many time I also feel he was better than Saliba in some games. Saliba is the epitome of cool, Maldini esque- Maghales is the bull in the china shop defender.
Works well.

Marko

Good news about Tomi getting a new deal. He stays fit he’s an absolutely great player for us. Dare I say that he’s been much better than Ben White this season

MidwestGun

Ya exactly Guns.. great combo.. and put Rice in front of them,.. and we are defensive juggernaut.

jwl

“… the ability for you guys to recall things you disagree with months/ years on is matched only by my wife”

Bilbo – I’ve been amazed by people’s ability to remember who wrote what on here for long time. I had same reaction as you, I thought we were a bunch of regular blokes here but no, apparently many men have memories like females do and they all gather here.

salparadisenyc

Arteta building his Maldini and Nesta with Rice pinning it ahead. Could be generational in all the same manner is. they can stay firing and fit.

Guns of SF

From the days of Sokratis and Mustafi, we come a long way

MidwestGun

Ya was just gonna say.. I used to close my eyes.. knew it was not going to end well.. with Papa Sak.. Mustafi and Xhaka pointing at them in defensive mid.

Come on y’all my ability to read and retain information is second to none..

That’s why I was a very solid ….. C+ student at University.

Bilbo

JWL – I think unless you keep a notebook you’re behind the game (like me)

Bilbo

The worst thing about Mustafi was knowing we needed a CB all summer, Mertesacker got injured, we went cap in hand to Valencia having flirted all summer and paid double bubble. It was all so obvious.

That’s before you even get to seeing him on the pitch…..
