KAI AT LEFT-BACK?!?!

by .

The beasting of Kai Havertz has been brutal. But for every amateur analyst demanding we know he’s terrible, another top pro manager pipes up and says they think he’s high qualidee.

This time, it’s Julian Nagelsmann – a manager a lot of Arsenal fans fawned over back in the day. He decided to go toe-to-toe with Mikel’s big galaxy brain and probably knocked him to the canvas by dropping him into the left-wing back position.

“Kai won’t always be in this position. I have a great idea, he’s an exceptionally good footballer. This is a very good option. He won’t always play as a classic left-back.”

Well, Kai opened the scoring for Germany and they went on to win.

Ok, they didn’t win. But that’s not the point. He scored a goal. THAT’S the point. Right?

Who knows where Kai’s Arsenal career is going to go, but hearing top footballing minds talking about how good he is does skew my view that he’ll probably come good. He’s a players player. A manager’s first pick. Clearly he has attributes that top coaches seem to love. We just need to see him bring a bit of bang-bang to proceedings.

My biggest takeaway from all of this is the thing that everyone said he’d be rubbish at (defending) seems to be the only thing he’s currently good at. I’m happy to put chips on his attacking game coming good when considering the managers that played him as a striker.

Arsenal are being linked with players this January — the list of players at the moment seems split between midfielders and strikers.

On the striker side, it’s Ivan Toney and now Dusan Vlahovic.

On the midfielder front it’s Douglas Luiz and Ruben Neves.

Let’s talk midfielders. Those two players, in a normal market, are £50m players. Both are versatile midfielders that can play as 6s or 8s… but the deeper role is where they thrive. For me, the only way you make that kind of deal happen is if Thomas Partey leaves the club. Neves is an outrageous technician who can’t go to Newcastle and Luiz is a free-scoring midfielder who is very unsexy but he’s never injured and he’s keeping an Unai Emery midfield going. He’s also exCity.

Midfield wasn’t where I saw Arsenal investing in January, but I think Arteta really wanted Thomas P involved this season, especially without Timber, so it would make sense.

The striker position is clearly a massive target for Arsenal, but £100m for Ivan Toney isn’t acceptable, and though Dusan Vlahvoci is a good player, what change out of £100m are we getting for him? 4 goals in 10 this season. 14 in 42 last season. Hard to say he’s banged.

If we can’t find a bonified goal-scoring freak this January, we should just pass. No point wasting good money on someone we’ll be lumbered with for 5 years. The player we sign needs to be pure glory. I’m not sure we’re getting that in 6 weeks time.

Arsenal have a new hype-child: Chido Obi-Martin

The Dane scored 10 goals against Liverpool U16s this weekend. He’s a U17, which is kind of cheating, but regardless, that is a big goal haul at a level in which you would not expect a scoreline like that.

Is he the next Jack Jebb?

The next Fran Merida?

Is he Arturo Lupoli?

Who knows… but it does seem like Arsenal’s production line continues to churn out the big names!

David Raya made his Spain debut against Cyprus… he conceded one goal off three shots on target.

Martinelli scored a lovely goal from a Vini Jr assist.

Saka did NOT get injured in very boring England win against Malta. 3 shots on target. How embarrassing.

Ok, a painfully slow week. The last international break is always the worst. So if you’re bored, check out the latest Patreon podcast below.

Can anyone explain how Estonia are in the Euro playoffs despite finishing bottom of their qualifying group with 1 point and a GD of -20??!?

Jamie

Chris –

Estonia are in the playoffs because of the crazy way UEFA calculates national team coefficients.

Positive pete

I sincerely hope they throw the kitchen sink at The Chavs.Couldn’t happen to a more classless.lowlife club personified by ‘ Maureen’ at the time.
By the way Hazard wasn’t the only one we missed out on.The list includes Makalele,Drogba,Essien, just to name a few.

jwl

Arsenal are offering 50% off deal for away shirts, they must not be popular because home and third shirt are normal price. Away shirt is awful, I can’t believe that design was approved.

jwl

“Arsenal have already secured the future of viral sensation Chido Obi-Martin. The 15-year-old made headlines at the weekend after scoring 10 goals as Arsenal’s Under-16s beat Liverpool 14-3. The striker had been tipped for big things long before his stunning display on Saturday and it is understood that he agreed scholarship terms with Arsenal last year.”

Yeah… That away kit is an abomination…. I’ve found the perfect present for Pierre though.

50% off of the away shirt, what a bargain….

Rich

Tierney is back in training, hopefully he can somehow produce a consistent run of form + fitness until the end of the season…

He’s a good versatile left sided defender, but unless he can prove consistent availability on loan, then it’s likely an issue we’re stuck with until 2026.

Corona XY

Nice one jwl, that’s one Xmas present sorted. Cheers for the tip!

@Kenyagunner:
Which brings me to the question, why was this kind of patience and flexibility not extended to Pepe?

Um…did you see Pepe constantly play according to the gaffer’s general tactical instructions? Like defend and shit? There is no favoritism here. Havertz puts in a shift as well as anyone on the team. People here are crucifying him because he has not scored a goal from open play yet – AND BECAUSE HE WAS PURCHASED FROM CHELSEA FOR 65 MILLION POUNDS.

China1

That’s like the fifa rankings which consistently have lots of randomly ranked teams that can’t remotely be justified

Like Belgium spent a good amount of time ranked #1 in the world in spite of never once at any time being the favourite to win any competitions lol. They were just another good team

Some controversial Hot Takes here… I’m flat not buying that Haaland is a better centre forward than Suarez… But at least he recognised The King.

Arsenal need clearly to rebuild our midfield. Odegaard and Rice are first team starters. I remain unconvinced about Havertz as a starter in left midfield position, although I suspect that it will be difficult to shift him out of the club in view of transfer fee and wages which we are paying. Partey and Elneny are clearly on the way out of club in next two transfer windows. Smith-Rowe remains a problem in view of his ongoing injury record. My view is that Vieira needs to be offloaded. He has not shown any form or performance which suggests that he… Read more »

Via Fabrizio Romano:

“BREAKING: Premier League clubs have voted against ban on clubs loaning players from within the same ownership group.

It means Newcastle can sign players on loan from PIF owned clubs — and same for other clubs like Crystal Palace with Lyon and similar situations.”

Bilbo

Find that a strange one, Rich. Obviously unfair and will favor only a small number of PL clubs

karim

Thanks Pedro and everyone else, I think I kind of needed that.
Won’t do it again, I promise.
Cheers

Rich

Needed a majority of 14 to push through the ban, but came back 13-7.

Turkeys don’t vote for Xmas.

jwl hides it well but he comes of a liiiiitttle Q-Anony for me sometimes.

Nigel Tufnel

Of course I want to see the strongest sanctions possible against Chelsea and City… but in the case of Chelsea I think I’d understand the new owners argument that any previous misdeeds were committed long before their purchase,, so is unfair to punish the new regime. They must feel this way, because there is no way they could have known about previous inside practices. The sellers were never going to do anything but hide that stuff. There is probably so much more they’ve done, and worse than the Hazard agent.

Nigel Tufnel

Pete,
Juan Mata too.

FB

Good to see you Karim

Bilbo

Nigel, regarding Chelsea fundamentally disagree. If they set that precedent, City will change owners overnight like the sanctioned Russians passing all their assets to their children after they’d rolled into Ukraine.

FB

Any news from Camp Brasil on Jesus starting/playing?

jwl

My pleasure, Corona XY. I also know where you can get dogs pooping 2024 calendars if you need any more xmas tips.

Rich

Nigel

I’m not in favour of FFP… But if any club has been making under the table payments to gain an unfair advantage, then they need to be punished, whether it was their previous or current owner.

The club itself will have benefited from that unfair advantage, and therefore they should now be disadvantaged to compensate and even things out.

The way that lot in West London have been investing, maybe they’re fully anware another transfer-ban is in the post?…

X haka

Nigel, regarding Chelsea fundamentally disagree. If they set that precedent, City will change owners overnight like the sanctioned Russians passing all their assets to their children after they’d rolled into Ukraine.

Exactly
Man City could change ownership structure or sack an executive, and blame them/him.

And any club from the past, that has received penalties could use this as an excuse.

Didn’t QPR get a £40 million fine for FFP breaches?

Bertie Mee

A good way of finding out what other managers think of Kai Havertz would be to put him up for transfer .How many would be interested in buying him for what we paid? Globally none would be my guess .£40 million-very few if any .£30 million? Maybe some interest but I submit his value is around £25 million which is what we should have offered Chelsea. The deal we did is ridiculous and stifles our ability to trade this January . If you can find anyone willing to pay more than two thirds of what we paid I will drive Kai… Read more »

Bertie Mee Noone is going to buy Havertz factoring in transfer fee we paid AND also the wages. So I am afraid that he is likely to be on our books for forseeable future. The real concern for me is that Arsenal have 4-5 other midfield players in our squad who are likely to leave in the the forseeable future. Elneny and Jorginho have contracts which expire at end of season. Partey wants to leave the club and is injury prone. Smith-Rowe is also injury prone and there is growing evidence that Arsenal may offload him in the Summer. Vieira… Read more »

Xhaka, that rings a bell, can’t quite remember. I do remember Pompey getting a 9 point penalty when they went into Administration mid-season after some bizarre ownership fun and games. Maybe Everton isn’t as unprecedented as they are saying?

Middlesbrough also got one in the late 80s maybe early 90s because they forfeited a game due to illness/injury – think that was 3 points.

Bilbo

ESR – unfortunately we probably need to get rid whilst he has some value. Maybe send him to Villa as part of a Luiz transfer. Jorginho – fairly happy to renew him on the understanding he’s a bit part player. If we bring Patino back into the fold, it would be good to have some wiser heads around. Rice can’t be everything. Elneny – thanks for coming Vieira – actually think he might come good but he’s not doing it now; would prefer a loan last chance saloon. Partey – like ESR, bin in the hope there’s some residual value… Read more »

We had a 2 point deduction in 1990/91, and United got a 1 point deduction for a 21 man squabble… We still went on to cruise to the title that season, losing just 1 game.

X haka

Xhaka, that rings a bell, can’t quite remember. Yes, they did, had a £ 40 million fine and transfer embargo, I checked it. So we have Everton with a 10 points ban and QPR with a £40 million fine for FFP breaches. Both presumably getting punished for simply trying to compete with the bigger clubs? the same clubs, that didn’t want to play them, when they wanted to break away, lol If Man City and Chelsea escape from this, whilst the smaller clubs are getting flogged like this, there is no real point of it anymore IMHO Both need to… Read more »

Havertz again as a left back.

🚨🇩🇪 Kai Havertz starts at LB again for Germany as Julian Nagelsmann wants him in that position… for present, future, Euros.

Honestly, this sounds like a sick joke… Kai is almost going through the reverse Saka timeline.

Terraloon

City actually haven’t been charged with breaking FFP nor from what I have read to date is there any suggestion that either have exceeded the maximum £105 million . They face a whole load of charges re financial matters many to do failing to provide correct information another chunk around around matters that are subjective such as image right payments and Mancini’s wages others around failing to co operate but no where is there a charge that they exceed FFP (PL Version) limits. From everything I read if proven they will face a massive points deduction We know that Chelsea… Read more »

The EFL did impose , initially £40+ million fine but that was massively reduced and the appeal that QPR had lodged was withdraw
The final settlement was :
A Fine of £17.0m
QPR to pay the EFL’s costs of £3.0m
A transfer embargo in the 2019 January Transfer Window
The Club’s shareholders will capitalise £21.965m of outstanding loans.
A time to pay schedule has been agreed between the parties.

You know in the English office when Tim is talking about irrelevant responsibilities being handed out and Gareth pipes up about being the milk monitor at school – Kai at LB = Gareth

SV

Havertz activ in the attack. But Germany one mill down against Austria.

MidwestGun

Somehow, it’s almost comforting that Nagelsmann has lost his damn mind when it comes to Havertz as well. It’s not just Arteta, Seems like Kai just triggers the extreme galaxy brain … gene in all the coaches he plays under.

SV

Havertz is linking well with Gnarby.

Sane red carded.

A friendly?

Havertz will get a nice defensive practice.

SV

Havertz finds himself in the attack on the right.

SV

2 substitutions for Germany. Havertz still on the pitch and attacking.

SV

Havertz defending a corner at a near post.

SV

Havertz playing in the middle now.

SV

Austria 2 nill up.

SV

Hummels not a happy bunny.

Havertz attacking in the box from the right.

SV

Havertz substituted. 77 min played.

SV

Havertz needing some play time in different positions and getting it in 2 games, scoring in the process. All in all, a useful international break for him.

Having seen him today, for now he can be a versatile squad player for us.

Nigel Tufnel

Bilbo, Xhaka, Rich..

Good points about Chelsea. You changed my opinion.

bacaryisgod

Good to see you back Karim.

I’m all for Pedro instituting a ban on political talk because then I might be able to start liking ‘Far Far Right’ Rich again.

MidwestGun

All 3 Arsenal Brazilians.. starting tonight.. fingers crossed.. toes crossed.. everything crossed they get out of this healthy.

MidwestGun

Oh Lord.. Game already delayed.. giant brawl in the stands… Security trying to clear what looks like the Argentina visiting section behind the goal. They are swinging Batons at full strength whacking skulls… Hope this doesn’t carry over to the game.. but these games are notoriously brutal.

raptora

Very easy for me to like this Brazilian team in comparison to the Argentines.
Our 3 Gabriels all play for Brazil, while for Argentina the likes of Messi, who was a main part of that corrupted Barcelona team that unfairly won vs us, Alvarez (City), Romero and Lo Celso (Spuds), Enzo (Chavs), Mac Allister (bindippers), Emi (used to like him but he’s a twat).

Brazil has Richarlison, Bruno G and Emerson Royal (Richarlison not in the group) that are cuntish though.

MidwestGun

Argentine players are leaving the pitch under protest.. or something.. not sure.. my Spanish is not bueno. Looks like Bruno G tried to talk Messi into staying or something.. but he was like get off me.

Brazilian team still on pitch … looking confused.. hahaaha Craziness.

MidwestGun

This can’t be good for Jesus … they were all warmed up… ready to go .. now no idea.. they are trying to stay loose.

MidwestGun

Game might be called off .. not sure.. What I can gather is Argentine players were not happy with how the Police/ security were smacking their fans with batons. Not sure if they will return.

MidwestGun

Somebody in the backroom is trying to talk Messi into coming back about now.. I think they are coming back.. yep here they come.

MidwestGun

Players are arguing now.. hahaaha be a miracle if they can get this one in with nobody getting sent off.

Nigel Tufnel

Video of Emi trying to go after a cop in the stands and being held back. Almost got him though.

Nigel Tufnel

I’d rather it was called off because of Jesus … very annoying.

MidwestGun

Ya.. looks like they are gonna kick off though..

Sensei

Gabby J forcing a Martinez own goal would be nice

MidwestGun

They might need 2 or 3 referees for this one. hard fouls flying in..

Sensei

My god, Argentina still carting out Otamendi in defense

MidwestGun

Gabby Jesus got a yellow already..

MidwestGun

He was trying to hold a dude off him and whacked him in the face.. think it was De Paul.. might have broke his nose? Don”t think it was intentional wasn’t even looking at him

MidwestGun

No way this game ends 11 v11..

Kadibia

Gabriel Jesus already on a yellow card. A part of me wants him to receive another yellow card so he’s fresh for us

MidwestGun

Ya Kadibia.. me too.. Game only 17 mins in and the ref could easily.. have handed out about 10 yellow cards. hard fouls everywhere. Not a game for recovering.

Sensei

Wow, foul foul foul. This is insane. No momentum.

MidwestGun

Yep.. more like a boxing match or something.. Feel like I should be scoring rounds and hard shots to the face.

MidwestGun

On the bright side if Jesus makes it thru this.. he is definitely healthy .. not holding anything back.. no sign of limping or anything like that. On the bad side.. not sure how anyone can make it thru this. unscathed. Messi took a knock .. I think.. they playing without him for a few minutes.

MidwestGun

Wow.. Marti putting on a dribbling show.. nutmegging dudes..

Sensei

Carlos Augusto? Never heard of that dude. Plays for Inter apparently

MidwestGun

Lot’s of brilliant individual talent.. on display but not a whole lot of teamwork going on for Brazil.

Humidity there must be insane.. they are guzzling down water like crazy at every break.

Sensei

So close for Marti!

MidwestGun

Martinelli with a shot cleared off the line.. was going in.

MidwestGun

I’d say our boy,.. Marti was man of the match that first half.. best player out there, so far.

GD4

I can’t believe all three Arsenal players are starting the second half, especially Jesus. Edu, don’t you have any influence?
Brazil isn’t El Salvador? Surely the Samba Boys have enough depth not to ruin our players before they return to England. Can only cross fingers and hope

MidwestGun

I don’t think there was any way in hell you could keep Brazilians out of an Argentina V Brazil.. match.. Hell even old man Messi on one leg.. won’t stop playing in them.

Sensei

Ooooh, our boy should have scored that!

MidwestGun

Ohhh damn.. Jesus with a brilliant run.. and dribble.. Marti with a shot but right at Emi.

GD4

What’ a run by Gabriel Jesus and what a miss by Martinelli.
Jesus is playing like a man possessed.
Please please sub him before he pulls something

Aaron

Get AFC’s lawyers to actually do something, like sue fifalona and eufalona for injuries caused by these stupid games.

Players get hurt all the time, and the countries never pay a cent.

Ridiculous….

Sensei

This Argentina side is painful, so pedestrian to watch

GD4

60 mins gone and Jesus still on the field chasing down every ball. I’m hoping he gets subbed

Sensei

Messi completely anonymous

MidwestGun

I’m probably biased but I’d say the best 3 Brazilians out there are Arsenal players. Raphinha been pretty good too though to be fair. Brazil has the better players.. but they don’t make the extra pass.. a lot. Dibble, dribble shoot … dribble dribble shoot.

So Argentina play more cohesive as a team.

GD4

Messi is playing like a land owner.
Someone should give him a cigar and a rocking chair.
The man has barely broken into a jog all game ..:

Argentina scores

Sensei

Good god, there it is. Like watching Arsenal, how many times have we seen that!

MidwestGun

And Messi is definitely not healthy … Argentina one chance… one goooaaaaaaaaaaaallllllllll as they say on Telemundi.

Sensei

Sucker punch from Otamendi (!)

GD4

Damn that was the two GABRIEL’s that got aerially abused by Otamendi.

Yikes

MidwestGun

Brazilian set piece defending is pretty non existent.

GD4

Raphina nearly makes it 0-2 with an OG.
Another corner to the blue and whites

GD4

There’s not much fire power that catches the eye on the bench of the Samba boys

MidwestGun

I would say Brazil is in trouble for the WC qualifying but like 7 out of 10 teams from South America get thru. And Bolivia, Peru and Chile are pretty crap..

Sensei

Argentina becoming the Switzerland of South America, boring but effective
