‘I FEEL SICK! THIS IS AN EMBARRASSMENT!’

Arsenal lost to Newcastle in a tremendous battle at St. James Park. We lost in the margins. Those margins once again being VAR in combination with the on-pitch referee.

Arteta finally realised that playing it nice in the media doesn’t work.

“How the hell did this goal stand up?,”

“It’s embarrassing what happened. How this goal stands, in the Premier League – this league that we say is the best in the world.

“I’ve been 20 years in this country and now I feel ashamed. It’s a disgrace. It’s not good enough. I feel embarrassed to be part of this.”

He’ll get a hefty fine for saying that, but he can sleep easy tonight knowing every manager and professional in the game was nodding their head with his rant.

PGMOL is not fit for purpose. That was before we knew big names refs were taking midweek trips to oil-rich nations to top up their salaries. I’ve been over it many times, but I’ll say it again:

There’s no consequence for failure

No one ever truly loses their job

There’s no diversity in the group they hire

There isn’t a single referee represented from London

The majority of them come from the North

They only just appointed their first black ref in 15 years this season

They are on record saying they make decisions based on friendship

The goal was shocking. VAR canceled a United goal for a minor infraction. A few hours later, the same organization managed to look at three separate incidents in one sequence of play and decide that they were all ok. The ball going out looked bad, but you never really know without Hawkeye (so why don’t we have it), the offside was clear if the McGuire one was, and the cherry on the cake was the two-handed shove by Joelinton.

We also need to talk about the Bruno arm to the face. VAR said it was ok because it wasn’t an elbow. Do you think the police would let you off assault if you did that to someone in a bar? It might be passable if it was a one-off accident, but the build-up was his temper getting worse and worse. He should have been sent off. It’s criminal he wasn’t. This was a game the ref had zero feel for and he ruined it.

Going away to Newcastle is tough, those games are tight, if you’re going to lose, it can’t be for shocking goals like that. It was an absolute disgrace.

That said, we do have to be honest about some of the challenges we had during the game, even on that goal.

1. Arsenal players switched off when they thought the ball went out of play. We have to assume, at all times, we’re going to be fucked by decisions. Argue it went out after you’ve cleared it.

2. David Raya needs to do better from that cross – it’s hard to hammer him for being small, but that ball should be intercepted by him. This is a guy that has been training with longball merchants for 8 years misjudging a cross again. I want to keep defending him. But at the moment, it feels like we’re racking up a clanger a game.

Are we looking at needing two new keepers next summer? At this rate. I think it’s almost certain. I thought his abilities on the ball were on full show yesterday, but once again, there was a black mark against his name and it’s painful viewing.

It’s really easy to get massively downbeat after a fine margins game like that. If you win it, everyone is a hero. When you lose, everything with our current setup is wrong and we need to spend more money.

Kai Havertz had an impressive game for me. We aren’t getting game-changing moments, but he was a long way off ‘terrible’ like I’m seeing from some parts of the internet. Newcastle fans might have thought he deserved a red for an aggressive early tackle that set the wheels in motion for some bad Bruno behavior – but it was a yellow for me. I liked that tackle, have to admit.

Declan Rice was absolutely outrageous. I can’t believe we have him in the side. I underestimated his incredible power and pace – and also the delicate feet he shows off when given the chance. He is absolutely world-class and I won’t have anyone tell me otherwise. The extra physical presence he gives us is so valuable. When Kai put that tackle in, l loved that Declan led the defence. Arsenal hasn’t always been that team, we are now.

The main problem with our midfield is it isn’t picking locks at the moment. We had one shot on target. You can blame the front three, but for me, it was more an issue of service. Without Martin, we looked a touch bland. Not many teams are going to have great options when they’re missing Thomas Partey and Martin Odegaard, we’re not different. Though I was expecting Kai to be more of a creator than he’s proved to be so far.

I’m not sure that extricates Eddie from the conversation here. I don’t think he should have started – and he didn’t really show enough out there today to suggest I was wrong. You can’t take away the good from his season, 7 goals, 3 penalties, and some decent performances. You also can’t hide from him not offering much on days like today.

That said – Newcastle is a top team. Moments like today shine an unfair light on players and force people into drastic opinions. Not having loads of chances against one of the best defences in the league at their place isn’t really the place to be making sharp judgments. I just wonder if Ivan Toney would have melted into the background to the same level… but then I also wonder what he’d do without the service? Maybe someone more physical does more with less? Maybe he doesn’t.

Overall though, I’m not going to draw too many conclusions. When you play top teams in the Premier League away from him, limit their chances, and get done by a horrible decision. How hard can you critique? We were missing Partey, Jesus, Odegaard, and probably Timber. Different players, maybe a better chance at a different outcome. But Newcastle will be tough whoever we add. Not sure there was a silver bullet solve for today.

Let’s move on – see what happens regarding the refs – and hope the boys get on a better footing for next week.

Putting aside all the negatives ( VAR) from last night’s game, which is incredibly difficult to do, I still have concerns about certain aspects of our interplay.
Because we are too predictable, teams are able to counter our movement far more easily.
Why is it that Declan Rice is the only player capable of moving through the lines and creating energy? Without him we are in a quagmire.
Arteta has to find a way to generate more positive play in the final third.

This is an excerpt from the official rules of the game VIOLENT CONDUCT Violent conduct is when a player uses or attempts to use excessive force or brutality against an opponent when not challenging for the ball, or against a team-mate, team official, match official, spectator or any other person, regardless of whether contact is made. In addition, a player who, when not challenging for the ball, deliberately strikes an opponent or any other person on the head or face with the hand or arm, is guilty of violent conduct unless the force used was negligible. Samesong I largely agree with you. Some players like Haverts are not good enough whether individually or within the system we play. Some players like Rice are good enough but the system we play does not maximise their potentials yet. I also have Ode (this season) in this category, he’s sorely missing Partey who is the staple point of this system. Then there’s a case to be made about our first and 2nd strikers. A case can be made about the current system being wrong for them too but to me they aren’t good enough even though they would enjoy… Read more »

If anything the Bruno incidents were worse than the comedy VAR decision over the goal. If I’m right didn’t Bruno also carry out a series of fouls one after the other ? Same as City. Why are we continually getting players clatter us in a sequence and get completely away with it. The SKY mob pundits with that evil pixie woman were also shite but that’s par for the course.
David Little Legs Raya – need I say more ?

Emiratesstroller

Pedro I am not going to repeat what everyone thinks about the VAR decision and its impact on result. The game highlights once again what we have seen earlier in the week against West Ham. The squad in the absence of several key players is not good enough. 1. We have a Goalkeeper problem. We have brought in Raya as an upgrade on Ramsdale!! Does anyone believe that is true? None of our forwards really make runs across the backline, which not only drags/confuses defense’s but gives a through ball opportunity. We play so stagnant when our slow ponderous play leads to a defense being set. Our attacking play’s always see (especially on Marti side) the winger receive the ball, turn back play to the fullback and then to DM/CB because not one other forward wants to make a run or even make themselves available for the ball. It’s annoying as. We struggle getting in behind because we’re so slow to build up, and a lot of the times we… Read more »

We lost a Cup final to Newcastle back in the day due to a ball being out so it’s some weird constant like “Bodies”
David “Little Legs” Raya and epithet I disparagingly called him now playing out in front of our eyes. I hope the stats merchants are going back to those GK statistics and are now burning 🔥 them in their fireplaces

Mysticleaves

Goober

Our wingers are inclined to cut in 100% of the time. It’s so predictable. I could count 2 runs Eddie made when Marti was with the ball that he didn’t give. The very clear one was the only shot on goal Marti made by cutting in. All he had to do was roll the ball across for Eddie to finish. He had a yard on the defender there. Quick releases to our strikers are non existent even when they make the run.

Gonsterous

I haven’t watched the game, but watched the highlights on the Newcastle YouTube page and all the comments by their fans suggest VAR was unfair to them. Some comments included how they felt they were playing against 12 men and how we were not getting booked at all and shojld have ended the game with 9 men.

Coming over to le Grove and its the same with the arsenal fans and complaining about VAR. Either var was super shite yesterday and both teams suffered or both sets of fans just feel hard done by VAR on a couple of decisions.

Ben D

I’ve slept and woken up still fuming. I agree with Arteta, it’s a fucking disgrace!!!!

VAR didn’t see the blatant hit to Jorghino’s head, and saw nothing clear in the 3 incidents leading to their goal? What do they see? What’s their use?

Arsenal are the most boring, whining and self entitled club in the premier league. Wha wha wha is all we’ve heard for that last 20 years. For a while, Arsenal and Man U had a bit of a monopoly on the league where we would either be top or second, and then came Roman. That’s where the jealously and bitchiness began in earnest. All of a sudden there was a new player and Arsenal didn’t like it. Money was the problem, FFP, rough players, fixtures, bent refs etc etc. It just hasn’t stopped. Did you miss the Bruno incidents and crazy VAR decisions?

Markymark

Rigid* ?? – Good

Emiratesstroller

The simple fact is that Arsenal have not played particularly well all season, but have managed to grind out results. Last season we played much better.

However we have lost three games which have highlighted deficiencies in our squad. The shinnanigans with recruitment of Raya has impacted on Ramsdale without improving the goalkeeping.

Our midfield is now a complete mess. Havertz is no replacement for Xhaka and Vieira is a complete
waste of space. How I miss Xhaka!!!!

Raya was never this bad at Brentford. Being beaten because his positioning is all wrong. That’s coaches job and so far whoever gets coached by inaki ends up looking like a Sunday goalkeeper

Yep, loads of players out through injury. And whose fault is that? A referee? VAR? City?

That’s called poor player management. Poor training. Poor recovery.

Too many excuses. Arsenal are a boring club and are no better than we were 5, 10 years ago. Worse because we’ve spent £700m or so doing it. Arteta has been backed like no other manager in Arsenal’s history. And what exactly has he done with the money?

Guns of Hackney

If you lot keep going down the ‘blame everyone else route’ you’ll lose your grip on reality.

GOH well said. Bruno hand on jorginho was a yellow. That was what VAR said. It was a foul. Additionally, it was not an off the ball incident, Bruno was challenging jorginho who had the ball at the time. What he did is the same as when a play passes the ball and the defender hit his leg after the ball left his foot i.e “leave something on him “. It was reckless and needless but the best was a yellow. Amongst our controversy with var it seems to be overlooked tbat Wolves were screwed over yet again. Watch the penalty given against them yesterday. If that’s deemed a foul then Gabriel was surely fouled during the the play for Newcastles goal. That’s without the ball crossing the line, or Bruno’s violent conduct which wasn’t even reviewed. Also tell me what Havertz “did wel” yesterday? Bearing in mind he is a £65 million player and not some rookie making his first few starts for the club and putting himself about a bit. What’s to like about that wild tackle on the sideline? He timed it ever so slightly differently and he could have been off. It successfully riled up the Newcastle players and crowd. We can be physical and go toe to toe with physical teams without acting like idiots.

And his attacking contribution the game was non descript.

It is a fact that sometimes a ball is played to such perfection that it does go over the keeper’s head. What football hasn’t understood is simple, they should have seen how cricket declined when Hawkeye came in. Before HE, umpires would probably be right 99/100 times with their decisions. Once it came in, umpires became lazy and it was easier to go to the TV to get a decision. It also makes the official unaccountable and makes for drama. It ruined cricket. Rugby is different for lots of reasons. Football tried to become modern and actually set everything back.

Guaranteed it’ll be scrapped next season. But do not blame VAR for Arsenal’s terrible performances. That’s wrong and sad.

Henley Gooner

When Jorginho got clattered, why didn’t he stay down until play was stopped? . That might have made var realise it was a serious as it actually was.

But just as we can look at northern region bias in referees we could possibly see a bias within the Spanish trio. It’s so nice and simple after all an echo chamber of group think. Exactly what Leno complained about politics

Jorginho and Vieira are poor recruits. Partey and Smith-Rowe are injury prone and Odegaard is now injured so we lack creativity.3. Jesus is also injury prone and anyone who believes that… Read more »

Let’s get real about Havertz. He cost £65 mill. For that amount you expect an ‘exceptional’. From what we’ve see he is, at best, ‘adequate’. But, worst of all, that kinda of money would’ve have paid for an obvious need, a lethal striker.

Where was Edu? £65 mill would buy the best in Brazil.

We are missing the Xhaka of 2021-2023.
One reason why Zinchenko looks even worse is because there’s no one to clean up the mess he creates regularly.
Then Martinelli looks more isolated when there’s no one to draw away players away from him like Xhaka used to do.
All we had to do was find a replacement for Xhaka and we failed massively. We have enough time and money but we galaxy brained it.

Josip Skoblar

On the upside: it was a very physical game and we would have crumbled and capitulated a few years ago in similar circumstances. We didn’t yesterday. 👍 On the downside, there is zero creativity in midfield and attack. We have few skilled players who can dribble and take opponents, and we do not create enough chances. We concede few goals (our defence is strong and good), but we find it hard to score and we play boring football. 👎

If you want evidence of how important Xhaka was to us last season take a look at Bayern Leverkusen’s current record.

They are top of the Budesliga and unbeaten in all league and cup games. He is ever present in all
games and has been playing 90 + minutes in most games.

Last season Bayer Leverkusen finished sixth in league with 50 points.

£700m for top four…which we ain’t getting.

Arsenal and ambition. It makes me feel warm and fuzzy thinking about how far we’ve come.

Always thought any shot to the head was violent conduct
There’s nothing in the rule book that has to be an elbow to be a red card
Worse still it was from the back, leaving the victim no chance to brace or defend himself

Sometimes the officials in VAR thing they are on the frontier of a new discovery when their job is just to spot things that the referee missed.

“Saka is isolated but still producing elite GA”

Nothing elite about 0 goals in 6 or no G/A in his last 4 you tit.

He hasn’t had a good game since September if you exclude Chelsea. He was elite up until October but he’s been well below par since and shouldn’t be above criticism.

Guns of Hackney

Emirates. That’s purely coincidence. If you are saying that the 97% of the time dreadful Xhaka has turned a whole club around is laughable. They haven’t signed Maradona.

Revisionist history is tempting but look, Xhaka was garbage for most of the time. We have set the bar so low, it’s easy to think that he made a difference. You always have to aske yourself: would this player make an all time best team. He wouldn’t. Not even close.

Pierre It is a fact that sometimes a ball is played to such perfection that it does go over the keeper’s head. Raya’s positioning was fine as Willock illegitimately retrieved the ball, willock was allowed to travel to the edge of the area at an angle that he could easily have fired the ball into the near post.Anyone who thinks Raya’s positioning was wrong are clueless, his position was in line with the near post to cover the shot if needed , if Raya had been in the centre of the goal then he would have been open to being… Read more »

Havertz ‘very impressive’ yesterday?

We’re talking about him as if he is a make-a-wish kid at this stage, it’s quite embarrassing for a 65m signing who is the club’s highest earner.

As Bati says we’ve signed some complete duds that contribute nothing to the cause like Havertz, Vieira, Jorginho and Lokonga. That’s 130m down the drain right there alone on transfer fees and 2 of those are also amongst our highest earners.

Un Arteta didn’t build on last season’s success, instead he’s created needless problems for himself to fix what wasn’t broken. This obsessions with wingers tucking in also needs a reality check. We’ve become too stale and predictable. We have the best 2-3 squads in the league so we always have a chance once the injured players come back. Odegaard shouldn’t be allowed to play for Norway, same way Haaland stayed away last year. Partey shouldn’t travel to play for Ghana, he owes us one month before he effs us for the AFCON Gabriel Jesus shouldn’t be allowed to play for… Read more »

I believe it’s top 5 that gets CL this season, not top 4

ES. Xhaka provided an anchor in midfield and it now appears gave others the platform to perform but he was reckless. There clearly is something missing from midfield and it’s not just Xhaka it’s far deeper than that. We saw it against Chelsea, we saw it yesterday one simple ball bypassing the midfield and you are at the heart of the defence and I am far from sure that either Gabriel or Saliba as good as they are are great against pace when they are turned and neither White or whoever plays on the left reads the game defensively they… Read more »

It could be that the erratic performances defensively in the run in last season has had a big effect on Arteta, to the point where he is perhaps overcompensating to make us more solid( which we largely have been, with a few execptions) and out attacking play is suffering as a result. More fine tuning needed to strike the right balance. We definitely missed Odegaard yesterday, and we all know we have two near or actual world class performers in Rice and Saliba. Saka will find his true form Again (every player has a dip in form). So we know… Read more »

“I believe it’s top 5 that gets CL this season, not top 4”

Correct as long as English teams perform as expected this season in Europe to maintain the coefficient.

Pretty much a banker seeing as City will highly likely get semis in CL at very least. Liverpool should win EL and if Villa don’t win the ECL then they should slap themselves in the mirror for a whole week.

Savage

We are missing Xhaka, both the player and the role. If we have Jorginho, then Rice has to push up much further forward, like Xhaka was doing. Also, we’re complaining about the quality of ball around the box, but that was Xhaka’s biggest strength point. Lastly, anybody notice how flat our goal celebrations have become? Again, missing Xhaka, he was the first one celebrating every time.

Stevenz

You wait years to get rid of Xhaka then you get Havertz to replace him.
Who knows how.many years we are going to have to wait for that transfer to hit pay dirt. We

Cont – got one good mostly fuck up free season from Xhaka.

The signings this summer bar Rice have been Wenger level stupid and uninspiring

Take the recruitment power away from Arteta more like Chris. He’s been very public on how much he wanted Havertz and he also handpicked Jorginho and I’m betting Fabio Vieira.

We suffered for years with Wenger in control of recruitment. Imo managers shouldn’t be in the modern game.
