RAYA, THE CHOSEN #ONE

by .

There’s been a lot of debate in the air about David Raya vs Aaron Ramsdale. A large chunk of that, in my opinion, is the English looking out for the English.

But it doesn’t matter. There is no debate. Mikel Arteta thinks David Raya is the future of the Arsenal keeping story and he’s going to play his new man until it works.

The biggest error Arteta made was pretending his biggest mistake was not subbing on keepers during a game – or having different options for tactics. Arteta is never going to sub a keeper on at 70 minutes to change a game unless there’s a broken leg. All the tacticos frothing at the idea of this did make me laugh. The idea was always silly. If the most important player you can bring on to tactically change a game is a keeper, you’ve done something very wrong when picking your squad. There’s also the jarring nature of doing it in a game. If a keeper with cold gloves comes on and makes an error, the coach is in the mud. I also don’t see a game state where that move is merited. Chasing a game and you want a new keeper? Really? Defending a game and you want to bring on a keeper to see it out? Really? Arteta created the hill he is currently dying on and he deserves this. He should have just been honest about his plans… now people are prodding at him because by his own words, he should be dropping Raya right now.

What he should have said is he’s looking for something different this season and he’s changing things up.

David Raya is the chosen one and here are some things we have to consider:

Some of his errors of late are down to the way he’s being asked to play. He isn’t doing the same things as Ramsdale, he’s being asked to take things to the next level. That comes at a price, occasionally. We’ve seen Ederson, the very best, giving the ball away with consequences in the Manchester derby, and there are lots of moments you can find of him giving the ball away. His kicking success rate hovers in the same area as Raya. High-risk keepers come with high-risk errors. Arteta doesn’t want a keeper, he wants a makeshift centre back, and that’s a hard position to play.

He was lobbed from a cross at the weekend. It was an error, no doubt. He was out of position – and it angered me at the time. But looking back, it’s clear he’s at the front post because he’s aggressively trying to cut out crosses. Mudryk accidentally hit his shot into the only part of the net he would have scored from.

Some of the shakiness in the defence with the way he plays is down to the fact he’s had a short amount of time with his defence. Life was different at Brentford. He’d played in their system for 7 years, he knew everyone, he was part of their style. Arsenal is another level, he has to learn new routines, do different things, and unfortunately, that takes time.

Arsenal fans love Aaron Ramsdale. But it’s hard to look at his game over the last year and say it’s better than what we’re going to get when Raya settles. Aaron stopped coming for crosses, his kicking slowly regressed, his shot-stopping was way below average, and he made big mistakes in important moments.

It’s easy forget when part of the way you judge a player’s talent is how much you like them. The Moneyball concept was based on cutting out commentary like ‘his hairline is receding, he’ll lack self-esteem and confidence.’ You can’t judge a player by how much you like him.

Here are the stats side by side.

More passes, more successful passes, more ambitious passing, more touches, and better lost possession percentage. He’s also a suprem shot-stopper.

Also, let’s talk about his errors. The one against RC Lens ended in a world-class finish, the one against Spurs had a lot happen after it and ended in a world-class finish, the one against Chelsea was a horrendously lucky shot.

The luck will course correct, the errors will die, and he will show that he’s the chosen one with world-class performances.

This kind of reminds me about the time we signed Thomas Partey and the stats sites said they wouldn’t have taken him on a free transfer. Then he moved into the single pivot position and didn’t do well there game one and people said he’d fail. How did that work out as a hot take? Terribly.

The one thing no one offers in the Premier League chatter, even some of the smartest analysts, is time.

It takes everyone time to settle unless your name is Declan Rice.

Aaron Ramsdale will be sold in January for £40m and we’ll use that money to buy a striker.

That’ll be the end of that. Don’t hang your hat on ‘two quality keepers’ because quality keepers don’t sit on the bench. Ramsdale is a quality keeper, he needs to play, he will get a big offer.

Right, that’s me done.

I was rocking the shirt but I decided last minute that the banner was probably overkill, lol.

I only wish I was in the away end, our away supporters are the best in the business and they stormed the stadium like it was Normandy. Incredibly vocal for such a small part of the crowd.

They can wait in line. I don’t think any woman can match the love that I have for Jesus and no, not the long-haired water into wine bloke.

Martinelli has a calmness in one on one situations with the keeper that makes you think he should play more centrally.. As he was breaking from his own half tonight there wasn’t a doubt in my mind that he would score as you could visibly see him compose himself just after he crossed the half way line. I have a feeling that Arteta will use him as striker sometimes this season, ,he was reluctant to start him as striker last season even when both eddie and jesus were injured , and preferred to play trossard up top. There were a lot of cretinous comments about Arteta starting Jorgingho against Chelsea.
Just because Partey could be available from the bench doesn’t mean he was well enough to start, or that there wasn’t an issue he was feeling that acted up in the past couple days of training again.

All the leGrave medical staff love to be loud, and end up looking bad again.

And again, Rich was right about Partey.

Say whatever you want about Jorginho, at least he can play a whole game for Arsenal without a fitness scare.

we won and I have witnessed tonight albeit on the screen one of our own perform not once but twice a magical moments fitting the great football moments of our great team and that is more than enough for me. I was also delighted for WE to have witnessed it in person how much he was looking forward to it, we have emotional contact with each other although we are not aware of it, please people do not just disappear remain on here we are Arsenal family, love.

WengerEagle: Thank you so much for your entertaining take on today’s match. Although I watched it from home while you were there, I’m sure we went through the same powerful emotions – the chanting for Jose Reyes and the wizardry of Gabriel Jesus and solidity of Takehiro Tomiyasu. Rich,

Excellent job summarizing our season so far.
Amazing the way the bedwetters come out screeching after a draw like the weekend..such ingrates…

One genius just now… (after an away victory in the champions league) moans:

I guess he moans when he wets the bed.

Another Big time WIN!
Watched the game late after work.

Jesus was magical, and Martin with the clinical finish.

Defense looked strong and even Raya looked very composed except for “the punch!”

Really tough for AFC to win in Spain, and we did.

Anyone noticed Jesus score his goal from the wing? Typical winger play right there, it doesn’t get more typical than this. Marti down the middle, Jesus on the left. Same way we can play Kai CF and Jesus at RW when we want to give Saka a break.

The amount you spend doesn’t always correlate to instant success. Look at Chelsea… United… Newcastle. Usually it takes years of spending for it to take effect as in theory you are buying high quality players. Additionally I would rather look a bit off this time of the season then later in the season… as what happened last season, Peaked too early. Nigel, On Tomi I think Arteta is learning. Vs Chavs he played the same midfield two Jorgi and Rice but he picked Zinny for the LB. There’s no need for Zinny inverting when we’re playing with 2 solid DM/CMs and one of Jorgi’s biggest strengths is his ability to move the ball, not always forward but yeah… I don’t think in such case it’s worth it to play Zinny when the cost is having a defensively weaker LB. Substitutions today were spot on. If not a bit late. But Ode needed to come off and Martinelli had run himself ragged as well as Jesus. And those were our subs to replace. If you acknowledge Rice was a good use of money then you have to acknowledge that the amount we spent is irrelevant because we had to pay the inflated market rate. I would say our defense is better and our attack is not as fluid mainly because we didn’t replace Xhaka with like for like upgrade. We may well find a work around though. But as for… Read more »

In the same process of thinking, Marti had a really good 2 games with Timber at LB. I could see the high potential in their partnership. Marti and Zinny doesn’t work as Zinny rarely plays on the flank and is mostly inverting to the center. And this year we don’t have Xhaka to combine with Martinelli, we’ve mostly had Havertz, another unsuited to Marti player. Last night we had Marti, Rice and Tomi + Jesus form a partnership similar to the one of Saka, Ode, White (not working as well this season as last). Raptora,

Just imagine how Arteta will work in Timber. I think FB is a position that he loves to rotate.
It was so obvious that he had big plans for him.

As we are, Ben White has had to take almost every minute, and he never complains or ducks. To be able to rest and rotate on both FB sides, with so much quality.. it will be such a luxury, and keep our guys fresher. Plus I could see Zinchenko or Timber in midfield even.

Siddeeq

Rayasdale has a thicker neck than Rama. Thats what you need in a goalkeeper. The head sitting on a solid foundation

Chas

What is the greatest concern for me is the on going persistent injury issues within the club… Partey…. Jesus….Saka…. Timber…. Clubs get injuries that is understandable but as said above Partey is key for the forward progression in our team. Partey is the best 6 pivot in world football when fit and on form. His ability to create space find players on turn and release is 2nd to none. There is no reason we can’t play Partey and Rice if Galaxy plays Jorginho and Rice. It gave him trauma. They should send him to you for therapy.

Markymark

Siddeeq – what instructions? To undermine the faith in the defence and give away a goal a game ?
In all seriousness though the games are coming thick and fast so it’s no longer one or two games. He needs 6 solid games on the trot. Sadly by that time we are at real risk of losing a great team player

My growing concerns about Arteta’s decision making is as follows: 1. We are overplaying our starting eleven and in particular Odegaard and Saka. 2. There is a lack of rotation. We played the same team on Tuesday as we did on Saturday. Injuries apart are we to assume that Arteta will pick the same team against Sheffield United? 3. What this tells me is that Arteta does not rate most of the squad/bench. A rare attack through the middle of the pitch led to a rare.goal with the minimal of touches……maybe we should try that more often… Part of the reason we rarely see a goal like last night’s is due to the fact that normally our centre forward is not so far up the pitch when we are defending as a team, so the clearance from Gabriel would have been collected by the opposition centre back. Socrates

Raya is more involved in play than most if not all the goalkeepers in the league as far as I can tell. This is due to our lack of control in midfield and also trying to coax the opposition into pressing us. While the likes of Ederson look to be better with their footwork they also don’t get that many touches as Raya does which only sets up Raya for more opportunity to make a mistake which is then quickly translated to “bring Ramsdale back”. Bob N16

ES,

I’d still argue that if Saka and Odegaard were rotated occasionally, that would sort out them being overplayed.

We couldn’t get rid of Cedric due to his high wages after a free transfer and Elneny got a goodwill contract extension after getting a long term injury. Both will be gone next season.

Every team has and needs ‘squad players’. Difficult balance between expectation of minutes and reality. Partey, Jorginho and Elneny will likely be gone and I hope we sign someone like Andre(?) and let Patino be a squaddie.

Vieira and ESR – one needs to go etc

Pierre

The question that many are asking , including Arsenal fans and pundits ..has Odegaard become a liability to this Arsenal team and is it time to drop him to the bench. Part of me thinks that the arrival of Declan Rice and his strong personality has had a negative effect on Odegaard and he may feel the captaincy is under threat and he has gone into a shell… His 2 recent performances have been poor and that’s being kind, some would say terrible, previous to that he has been average at best except for when we beat psv and Bournemouth… Read more »

Posting the highlights just so we can rewatch that fantastic turn by Jesus to wipe out two players plus the excellent through ball that killed off another two Sevilla players. This is @ 1:20.

And Jesus goal starts @ 02:35.

Despite our struggles during the game, these were really sick goals.

I can only concur with Pierre that getting Gabby up top with Jesus on the left is worth trying out. This is something I have been wanting to see tried out. Whether Arteta will is a very different story.

Spanishdave

Arteta lacks confidence to rotate because he is overly worried that he will get blamed for doing it.
This lack of confidence therefore gets to the players who start to think they are not good enough, so they struggle to make an impression.
Ode and Saka should not start v Sheffield they can come on only if needed.
Arteta needs to man up

G

Ode has had a couple of bad games, yeh must be Declan’s influence

GoonerDave

Why is it racist to prefer Ramsdale? I think Raya might be the better of the two, but racist?
The supply isn’t nearly enough for the demand. Racism would die a lot faster if people weren’t searching for it everywhere.

Tomi, Rice and Jesus were top class last night.

Northbanker

Currently I’m not sure there is a huge difference between Raya and Ramsdale. Raya passes the ball well but Ram is the better shot stopper. Neither are top tier but remain in the very good category.
Mike Maignon was mentioned on here previously and I’d love to see us go for him in the summer and not take up the option to buy Raya

Bob N16 The point is that Saka is “injured”. He should not be playing until he has recovered. The problem is that we have no adequate replacement to play on right wing. Our Centre Forward [Jesus] is a versatile and excellent forward, but not a prolific striker. He is also injury prone. We don’t have an adequate replacement or someone to rotate. ES,

We do have an adequate replacement for Saka but he’s our best CF too.
