WEDNESDAY ROUND-UP

by .

We’re hurtling towards the return of Arsenal, and I can’t wait.

Chelsea away.

Sevilla away.

Sheffield United at home.

Those are three great games that bleed into the darkest of Arsenal months… November. Remember those months under Wenger? Always torrid for no reason. Red cards, injuries, SHOCKING results. Hopefully, this is a season we move well and truly beyond crap traditions.

First up…

Chelsea has been in a severe state of uncertainty for quite a while now. They spent 1 billion on a ‘trust the process’ squad and we’re still not sure who is going to work for them. One thing is clear, they do have a lot of talent, so they are NOT to be underestimated. But I think it’s fair to say if we show up, we’ll likely be a little too much for them.

Sevilla away in the Europa Champions League shouldn’t be a consequential game… but we tanked against RC Lens in our second game. A win isn’t imperative, but it would make everyone feel a little less queasy about qualifying. You simply cannot finish outside the top 1 in a Europa League group that somehow managed to make it into the Champions League. It’s quite weird to me that Arteta doesn’t seem to do too well in Europe; he’s a bit like early Wenger in that respect. But, he is only a youngster; plenty of time to learn.

Sheffield United will be an interesting game. I don’t want to say it, you don’t want me to say it, but god damn it I’m gonna say it: We need this game to pump out goal difference.

I am a disgrace, and I know I’ve disrespected the game – but I mean it. Can’t be scraping a 1-1 to a team that took a beastly pasting by Newcastle.

Phase three of the season is a weird chunk – it’s 4 Premier League games and 3 Cup games. 9 points would be ideal. 10 would be great. 12 would set us up a DREAM for the toughest run of the season: The Phase 4 Christmas run.

The big conundrum we have is the League Cup. What to do? We play West Ham. The competition has very little value in 2023, but this season, it does offer a way for our young and fringe players to get valuable minutes they might not get in the Champions League. West Ham are also in Europe, so it’s not a given they’ll go all out in this one… the question is whether Arteta will want to do a Jose Mourinho and get the League Cup win in nice and early.

The last time we won the league cup it was called the Coca Cola Cup – an outrageously elite name. That was one of my first cup finals. My dad took me to see that AND WWF in the same weekend. Sadly, that was the moment I found out the fighting wasn’t real. Sad times. But we won a cup and that made me happy. Wenger never won it. Emery didn’t do well in it. It’s time we defeated the cup.

I’m putting my chips in… this could be our first trophy of the season. Maybe, just maybe, I’ll know what a Carabou is by the end of the season.

Finally, before I go. It’s been wild to watch the growth of the women’s game. The attendances at The Emirates have been outrageous. Arsenal has been trailblazers on this front, they deserve so much credit for pumping ticket promotions and getting fans into the stadium. Obviously, the product has been so good for so many years, and that’s a huge help. What has been a good/bad thing… the popularity of the Women’s Arsenal has grown to the point where it’s adopted the toxicity of the men’s game. I couldn’t believe the rhetoric this week when Arsenal went down to Aston Villa. It was a bit embarrassing but utterly hilarious when Arsenal turned it around and people had to start deleting tweets. It’s a bit sad that a sign of success is when people like the work soooooo much they add poison to the system, but here we are. Congrats to the team for the win.

One business aspect of the Women’s game I find interesting is the relative youthfulness of the crowds that show up. The football is good, the tickets are cheap, it’s an opportunity for parents in a cash-strapped society to give their offspring a nice day out at a great stadium for less money. In the long term, the Women’s game getting kids into their games will be a boon. Those kids will go when they are adults, they’ll watch the games on TV, by the Women’s merch, and eventually take their own kids. I’m not sure the Premier League for Men is doing anywhere near the job with young people. Average age of a season ticket holder is 43; it’s unaffordable to get kids into the ground, longterm, that’s a problem. A whole generation of kids that love football and DON’T go. That’s why getting a bigger supporter section should be imperative. If young people don’t get the live sports bug, they’ll not attend when they are 45 and can afford it. One to watch.

Ok, relatively short one. If you want to read a really great post today, get this one from Arseblog in ur veins.

Ramsdale misses had a baby

Terraloon

China Rubbish performance and rubbish result and still not worse than Chelsea who were desperately trying to waste time for a crap draw by the end Compared with 2-0 ofc you’d take the point but honestly Chelsea remain wholly unconvincing and required a cheap penalty and a fucking messed up cross to score against us even when we were absolutely dreadful. If we showed up even 70% in that match it would’ve been a 2-0 stroll – but we didn’t and have made unnecessarily hard work of it All the more frustrating when you work so hard to beat city… Read more »

Ramsdale needs to get his priorities right. 😉

Hate to agree with Pierre on this but he’s been on the money with some of his criticisms of Odegaard. He needs to step up more in big games as the team captain and be more than a mere runner on the field. He’s still a developing player but in games like this he needs to force the issue and lead from the front.

And Declan Rice.
Don’t even know where to start with the guy.
Where would we be without him.

I thought Havertz did well when he came on , played with intelligence and calmness unlike jesus.. Dropping Rice into a deeper position sbould have happened earliet as he is better with the play in front of him. Smith Rowe and Trossard must be knocking on the door as I’m not sure how much longer Arteta can persist with Odegaard who had a nightmare tonight, then again we have shef utd at home next week so i’m sure he will show up for that game Raya does have a propensity to be a little too far off his line, the… Read more »

I wish we’d stop blaming the ref.

Nah Terra I disagree I don’t see that we were made to look poor by some really good team. We were getting all the basics wrong. Players looked half asleep. Basic mistakes a lot of which were not forced I’ll give credit to the opposition when I think they’re legitimately impressive rather than scraping 2 poor goals against us on a day when we were awful and still only getting a draw vs us at home Call me hard to impress but I said similar things about the spurs game. We should’ve been 2-0 up by half time against them… Read more »

Next game I’d like to see Tomi and ESR start, with Rice back in #6. Can’t say I’m looking forward to having Ramsdale back in goal but if he doesn’t get the chance after this performance from Raya, he might as well instruct his agent to find him a new club in January.

I have no idea what’s going on with Odegaard but Arteta needs to figure it out ASAP.

Markymark

Brentford is a local club for local people – this is where Raya should be sent back to along with Inaki Cana. Ramsdale must get his place back

Un

Did you enjoy seeing Kaba Diawara come one for us?

I didn’t expect any better but we still played pretty bad. 2-2’s not the worst. I’m happy we didn’t lose. Chavs would have gained a lot of belief if they had won, but now, they’ll look that they did well but we’re quite fortunate in both of their goals.

Either way, winning Vs City doesn’t matter if we’re gonna lose points in the next game. But I expected it today so it’s not the end of the world. We move on. We’re still in a very good position. It’s a long, long marathon.

Markymark

We should be looking to grab the Ipswich keeper quick before someone else does. He could be a really good number 2 with massive potential. Great footballing skills, good height presence and shot stopping capability.
Little legs Raya ain’t got the ceiling

Anyone spouting “a point is a good result considering” needs their head examining…the team got themselves in that fucking mess from being piss poor the whole game, collectively a useless 90+ minutes of dross..arteta needs to get his head out of his arse and play our strongest 11 every week based on form. Saka has been crap fir weeks…trossard is mustard every time he get of the bench…why doesn’t he start? Jesus has been crap…so many players need benching..
Might wake the fuckers up?

Un

Raya does have a propensity to be a little too far off his line, the chelsea 2nd goal was a mis hit from Mudryk Raya did redeem himself later on a couple of times which kept us in the game, but I’m sure he will be in for criticism..

Pierre

Yes you silly old fool
He will
He gave away another goal with another huge error

@china…completely agree

Pierre

LS “I have no idea what’s going on with Odegaard but Arteta needs to figure it out ASAP.” Confidence or lack of is his problem. Celebrating Odegaard running around the pitch more than any other player is doing him no favours. I am sure that deep down Odegaard knows he is struggling creatively, a creative player lives and breathes for the moment when he can play an inch perfect pass with the perfect weight to make a chance on goal , at present Odegaard has lost all confidence with his final ball and he did have 2 or 3 chances… Read more »

I totally agree with you.

But, as you know, PGMOL are so morally corrupt that we will never see any consistency on this.

That call was pure anti-Arsenal bias.

As you know, you jump, you have your arms in the air to keep your balance.

But PGMOL absolutely wanted to make that call, which is why they did it after a few mins of play had taken place.

TheLegendaryDB10

Pierre

A question for you:

Would you rather see Rice become our captain rather than Øde?

I would personally.

zaco

considering the fact that play continued for about 2-3 minutes before the Ref-VAR went back to the Saliba incidence my questions now is this, what if Arsenal had scored within that period would their goal have stood?

Josip Skoblar

Against a poor Chelsea team, we were quite lucky to get a draw. We didn’t play well until Rice’s goal (who was my MOTM). Odegaard went missing and Saka didn’t contribute much. Martinelli was a threat and Trossard is class, I liked seeing Emile on the pitch, and Havertz is still useless. It was not a pen: how can you jump without raising your arms? Utterly ridiculous! Fuck VAR!

Pierre

Leg db10

Yes Rice all day long as captain for me …this time next year I doubt we will be asking this question.

Tom

You really must feel for the likes of Marky, Un, and Conteta.
Fellas, Raya isn’t picking himself over Ramsdale, nor is the Legrove community picking him either.
There’s only one person to blame and it ain’t the keeping coach either.
You’ll figure it out.

Nigel Tufnel

Coneteta, Lack of pace has been a problem for 2 years at least. Saka is not pacey..just quick over short distances. Jesus is definitely on the slow side. Martinelli is our only pace threat and he’s looking less and less like he has a football brain. It’s why I like him more as a second half sub to hit tired opponents. Must be the main reason we wanted Murdick and also Neto the previous summer. Neto would be perfect… but if he gets the choice between playing for us or Liverpool.. he’ll imagine being behind young star Saka, or “on… Read more »

Well we are going to have to agree to disagree.

The energy of their press the tactical organisation shouldn’t just be dismissed as you seem to be doing.

It’s all well and good saying we played badly and that’s so but you really have to look as to why that was .

Their problem was they didn’t have the experience or know how how to close the game out and yes it was a decent point at the end of the day .

Pierre

Tom
Un the Arteta sycophant wont be blaming Arteta for sweet fa.

Nigel Tufnel

By my count Raya isn’t to blame for either goal today.

What’s all the crying. about?
I see Ederson make stupid mistakes and get away with it all the time. Similar type risky game and I prefer it.

There is no keeper controversy except for people who don’t understand our game.

Terraloon

Nigel

Looking forward to your opinion how good Raya was today .

Markymark

I wouldn’t worry about a penalty when the arm is right out there. I think if we’d had one refused in reverse circumstances we’d be moaning.
Raya is making a serious error in every game he has played. His distribution has gone shite and he’s got to be the shortest 6ft guy I’ve ever seen he literally gets swallowed by the goal . This is our point of failure. This is our weak link and this is why we’ve now stumbled against Lens and Chelsea
Sack Raya , Sack Inaki Cana and bring in a supportive coach for Ramsdale

Terraloon

And there it is

Raya is as I said last week nowhere close enough good enough to a top four PL club

Samesong

What Chelsea done very well today is that they pressed us through the middle of the park . Gallagher was everywhere. Pcoh taking Sterling and Palmer probably cost them the win.

Nketiah nearly won it in the end so happy with the draw from being 2-0 down

Rich

I’d say there’s a 0% chance Arteta strips Ødegaard of the captaincy. The armband is just a piece of material… Rice can be hugely influential both on and off the pitch without a band around his arm… He’ll no doubt be a big part of our leadership group. Chelsea’s superior physicality in midfield caused us issues, they were quicker to everything, and Palmer’s positioning was causing us issues, particularly in the first half. We weren’t really at the races, and Chelsea were well setup once they went ahead until the mistake for Rice’s goal.. Happy with the point under the… Read more »

Goal Keeper is the least of our issues, imo. Don’t care who starts. I suppose you can argue/debate about wasted money and time on a Keeper who is basically the same as the one we had. But seems like a waste of energy. Finding a partner for Rice who isn’t Jorginho/ Elneny or Havertz is our issue. Again so many cowards finding nketiah an easy target. He came into the game when we were losing he helped us draw the game. You do write some gibberish sometimes.

Rice will absolutely become our Captain.

It means jack shit that Øde is Norways captain. He can’t even dominate a lacklustre Chelski team to save his life.

Rice knows what he wants and once he is officially made Captain will absolutely pull our team by the scruff of the neck during tough times.

I have not once seen Øde lead the team for a win. Not once.

G8

Raya didn’t cover himself in glory tonight, but people forgot how bad Rambo was in stopping hard and low shots.
I mean Rashford could shoot from any where on the pitch and Ramsdale would let it in!
He also got caught out of position few times, remember the one against sporting that knocked us out of europa

Mikel Coneteta

Tom Not sure what kind of a nibble you’re having at me about Raya here. I’m saying (as I have since before he landed) that he isn’t an upgrade on Ramsdale, that he’s simply an upgrade on Turner. It’s much of a muchness who we go with, I’d simply prefer we stick with Ramsdale who is younger and will hold his value as a minimum. I don’t see enough between the two to warrant making Raya’s move permanent so far, and so quite obviously I will hold that decision against Arteta/Edu who are the transfer double act. Nigel Very good… Read more »

I meant that Chavs were fortunate in both their goals. We played pretty bad. But I expected it to be one of our biggest tests because Chavs have a talented squad but also because they were the team that wanted it more. Like us vs City.

A draw fancies us but it’s good enough for me. It’s not a result that will derail our season. Chavs will regret they didn’t beat us but at our place it will be a very, very different game and we’ll ruin them. We move on and this result is alright.

You do know that the arm band doesn’t have any magical powers?… And players can lead by example and take responsibility without that piece of material around their arm?…

You’re utterly delusional if you believe Arteta shows Ødegaard the indignity of stripping him of the captaincy.

While I think Rice would make a great captain at club and international level…

It just seems highly unlikely Arteta would do that, or that Ødegaard would behave in a way that would make Arteta consider that.

According to stats Raya is better than Ramsdale.
Eye test alone, he’s way calmer and that’s about it.
The idea he was brought in to rotate with Ramsdale or provide competition was always for the press and the gullible.
Clearly Arteta rated him higher and that’s that.
Despite what the Ramsdalians say Raya hasn’t done enough to be dropped.

Samesong

How’s this McTominay scoring goals all.of a sudden?

Samesong

Good penalty handball

Markymark

Tom – according to sum Raya would need to boot it into his own net whilst laughing hysterically to just about do enough to get himself dropped. A nice little chat with Arteta would soon sort it all out though

Markymark

Sum* some

Samesong

Could this be a penalty record season because of the amount of handballs that will now be given.

Tom

Marky, nice touch, but I don’t recall anyone claiming Raya was elite, just barely edging Ramsdale.

jwl

Rice on his goal –

“Everyone’s been talking about this Beckham documentary, and I watched it for the first time last night,” he admitted post-match. “The first couple of clips are the game against Wimbledon where he scored from the halfway line and I took a lot of belief from that.”

TheLegendaryDB10

Rich You are not getting it. Rice is slatted to become Captain. It is why Arteta bought him in the first place. Of course it would be disrespectful to strip Øde of the armband now. But he will be getting it next year. The armband absolutely means something. It is the person the whole team looks upto. Looking upto a meek person who struggles in tough games doesn’t help the team at all (cf the Lens game). Tom Goalkeeper stats are a minefield and a half. Raya’s distribution numbers were ballooned by pumping it to Toney, his cross-handling bettered by sheer volume thanks to the type of team he played for etc etc. The calmer ‘via the eye test’ claim is contentious at best given he’s been a bundle of nerves against City and now Chelsea the past two games – directly costing us in one. Idk what “Ramsdalians” even refers to or how it was born, just seems a cheap gimmick for having any preference for Ramsdale. Which on evidence of Raya is hardly misplaced. Should… Read more »

This was not Arsenal’s finest performance, but still we came out of the game with a point. What we
are learning this season is that we are struggling to win games against London opponents. We have
drawn sofar three games against Spurs, Fulham and Chelsea.

I was 50-50 in my opinion who should be our first string goalkeper before today’s game. Now I think
that we should bring back Ramsdale. Raya has looked bang average since the CL game and whatever his shortcomings Ramsdale looks a more “confident” goalkeeper.

TheLegendaryDB10

Rich I flat-out well believe that Arteta will change his team captain. He flat-out changed his GK in a heartbeat, so why would he not change his captain/ team leader next season? Been quite loud about Havertz at no.9. It’s his best position by far and he’s very good. His game is the game of a CF, not of a midfielder. He’s a better CF than Jesus btw.

GD4

Raptora, Jesus did his best but you can only do so much when the center of the park was useless and the wide players were equally providing nothing in terms of chance creation. Zinchenko needs to play as an 8. He is too poor defensively and doesn’t make up for it by creating chances from out wide. Enough already. Whatever the fuck he’s doing this season with the back 3 in possession and Zinchenko/Tomi in midfield thing it isn’t effective in possession and it hurts us when we don’t have the ball. Martinelli getting hung out to dry on his side with no regular 8 to build a understanding with and a LB who’s given freedom to roam at RCM meanwhile White and Saka are being asked to do the same thing so they’re okay… Read more »

Really love Odegaard but does our captain have a mentality issue ? Disappearing in big games way too often. The best live for the big games and they want to prove to the other guy that they are better. See Bellingham.

Odegaard probably has more talent than Bellingham for example, but their mentality is on a whole nother level.

Think LG puts too much stock in whose wearing the armband, this side seems to have a very good vibe overall. Essentially we have a spine of leaders on the pitch, could literally put that band on 4 or 5 of our starters. The reply:
“Yes Rice all day long as captain for me …this time next year I doubt we will be asking this question.”

Keep dreaming LOL ..maybe wager your pension on it…. never gonna happen in the next 5 years.
Rice as a the unofficial English leader working the refs is perfect.

No common sense to go along with your intense personal dislike of Ødegaard.

We gained a point luckily or not so luckily come to think of both the goals we conceded were unfortunate. This Raya guy has some benefits with the way Arteta wanted to play, however he is resembling more of uniteds’s Onnana than Ederson of City. We are having three serious problems in our team. Odegaard is not what he is meant to be, we have seen enough evidence sofar. Now we have a massive problem of Arteta accomodating, Raya, Odegaard and Havertz into the team, when all three are or can be damaging to the line up. This will eventually… Read more »
