WEDNESDAY ROUND-UP

by .

We’re hurtling towards the return of Arsenal, and I can’t wait.

Chelsea away.

Sevilla away.

Sheffield United at home.

Those are three great games that bleed into the darkest of Arsenal months… November. Remember those months under Wenger? Always torrid for no reason. Red cards, injuries, SHOCKING results. Hopefully, this is a season we move well and truly beyond crap traditions.

First up…

Chelsea has been in a severe state of uncertainty for quite a while now. They spent 1 billion on a ‘trust the process’ squad and we’re still not sure who is going to work for them. One thing is clear, they do have a lot of talent, so they are NOT to be underestimated. But I think it’s fair to say if we show up, we’ll likely be a little too much for them.

Sevilla away in the Europa Champions League shouldn’t be a consequential game… but we tanked against RC Lens in our second game. A win isn’t imperative, but it would make everyone feel a little less queasy about qualifying. You simply cannot finish outside the top 1 in a Europa League group that somehow managed to make it into the Champions League. It’s quite weird to me that Arteta doesn’t seem to do too well in Europe; he’s a bit like early Wenger in that respect. But, he is only a youngster; plenty of time to learn.

Sheffield United will be an interesting game. I don’t want to say it, you don’t want me to say it, but god damn it I’m gonna say it: We need this game to pump out goal difference.

I am a disgrace, and I know I’ve disrespected the game – but I mean it. Can’t be scraping a 1-1 to a team that took a beastly pasting by Newcastle.

Phase three of the season is a weird chunk – it’s 4 Premier League games and 3 Cup games. 9 points would be ideal. 10 would be great. 12 would set us up a DREAM for the toughest run of the season: The Phase 4 Christmas run.

The big conundrum we have is the League Cup. What to do? We play West Ham. The competition has very little value in 2023, but this season, it does offer a way for our young and fringe players to get valuable minutes they might not get in the Champions League. West Ham are also in Europe, so it’s not a given they’ll go all out in this one… the question is whether Arteta will want to do a Jose Mourinho and get the League Cup win in nice and early.

The last time we won the league cup it was called the Coca Cola Cup – an outrageously elite name. That was one of my first cup finals. My dad took me to see that AND WWF in the same weekend. Sadly, that was the moment I found out the fighting wasn’t real. Sad times. But we won a cup and that made me happy. Wenger never won it. Emery didn’t do well in it. It’s time we defeated the cup.

I’m putting my chips in… this could be our first trophy of the season. Maybe, just maybe, I’ll know what a Carabou is by the end of the season.

Finally, before I go. It’s been wild to watch the growth of the women’s game. The attendances at The Emirates have been outrageous. Arsenal has been trailblazers on this front, they deserve so much credit for pumping ticket promotions and getting fans into the stadium. Obviously, the product has been so good for so many years, and that’s a huge help. What has been a good/bad thing… the popularity of the Women’s Arsenal has grown to the point where it’s adopted the toxicity of the men’s game. I couldn’t believe the rhetoric this week when Arsenal went down to Aston Villa. It was a bit embarrassing but utterly hilarious when Arsenal turned it around and people had to start deleting tweets. It’s a bit sad that a sign of success is when people like the work soooooo much they add poison to the system, but here we are. Congrats to the team for the win.

One business aspect of the Women’s game I find interesting is the relative youthfulness of the crowds that show up. The football is good, the tickets are cheap, it’s an opportunity for parents in a cash-strapped society to give their offspring a nice day out at a great stadium for less money. In the long term, the Women’s game getting kids into their games will be a boon. Those kids will go when they are adults, they’ll watch the games on TV, by the Women’s merch, and eventually take their own kids. I’m not sure the Premier League for Men is doing anywhere near the job with young people. Average age of a season ticket holder is 43; it’s unaffordable to get kids into the ground, longterm, that’s a problem. A whole generation of kids that love football and DON’T go. That’s why getting a bigger supporter section should be imperative. If young people don’t get the live sports bug, they’ll not attend when they are 45 and can afford it. One to watch.

Ok, relatively short one. If you want to read a really great post today, get this one from Arseblog in ur veins.

I just watched highlights from the Uruguay – Brazil game. Big Gab and Jesus played for the full 90+ minutes. Brazil lost by 2-0. The Uruguayans played such a nasty game that it was like watching Arsenal Vs Newcastle last season. Every foul they commited deserved to be booked but weirdly enough they got 3 bookings Vs Brazil’s 5. On the highlights video they tried to break Vini Jr, Jesus and Neymar. It worked for Neymar and at the end of the first half, after yet another zero chance to reach the ball tackle, he was taken out on stretcher… Read more »

yes nigel apologies to everyone but tom on here for going on about a horrible situation i know the phrase “I’m Kidding” is difficult to understand Tom- it’s ambiguous and can be taken so many ways so at the risk of seeming a little bit simple, let me explain something you seem to be unable to move beyond with your request for proof or whatever. When i said “I’M KIDDING” i meant “I’M KIDDING” some people call it joking, others call it taking the piss so no there will be no further talk of my bad joke, unless you make… Read more »

Jesus has always always been wasteful in front of goal. Which at times I find surprising when I consider his overall skill set. Great ball control, great at dribbling, great first touch, so it doesn’t make sense why his ball striking would be so poor. I put it down to confidence. He never strikes me as a sort of lad who has a lot of self belief. Always looks shy and confused. Always looks susceptible to being bullied. Doesn’t get into a defenders face over a tough tackle. Would rather roll around and complain to the referee vs getting stuck… Read more »

You’ve obviously not watched in a while Un because women’s football in England is way better than it was even a few years ago Some of the England performances at the WC were genuinely excellent Would any of them win a foot race with the men or win a shoulder to shoulder contest? No. But neither would any of the women’s tennis players beat the men. It doesn’t matter. Judge it as a distinct game and you’ll find at the top level it’s increasingly high quality. Many of the goals are genuinely great, even tho defending and goalkeeping is for… Read more »

Aside from the points I would love a win this weekend so much as it will dent the confidence boost Chelsea got from the last couple of matches

The chavs need putting right back in their box. Hoping for a great arsenal performance and a win to do that

China1

You’re not wrong about Jesus but zlatan Suarez and costa all loved to dive and roll around in agony

Some of the cringiest dives ever have been from Zlatan which is even worse considering he’s an 8’ tall Viking with a black belt in something or other

In watching the recent Spurs game the comparison between the finishing of Song compared to our forwards was very clear and interesting. Song being an elite finisher seems to slow down into a state of calm in the moments before shooting whilst Jesus always seems to rush his shots, as to an extent do Martinelli and Eddie. Arteta needs to sit them down and watch endless replays of Song and other top finishers until they get it right !

FB

Foxy

For God’s sake stop mentioning Song.

It drove Geoff from the blog, heaven’s knows what it could do to the current lot 🙂

bacaryisgod

Very surreal moment watching England. A couple of minutes in I thought that without Bukayo playing, Arsenal had no representation on the team. And then Declan got the ball and I thought ‘holy f@#*, we’ve got Declan Rice!’

TR7

Watched Argentina-Peru for obviously Messi. Still the best player in the world by some margin, doing things nobody else can.

Such a shame Neymar got injured again. He still has got amazing stats but due to injuries, poor decision making and lack of drive he couldn’t fulfill his true potential.

bacaryisgod

FB

Song wasn’t too bad. I always felt he was 80% of the way to being a great player. I guess the missing 20% was speed and desire. Nevertheless, he made the pass for Thierry’s epic homecoming F.A Cup winner against Leeds and also crossed it to Eduardo for his ridiculous goal against Burnley.

G

So has song joined spurs

local

I don’t expect a Chavs thrashing for a couple of reasons

First, Chavs have been defensively solid so far and are joint second in goals conceded(7 goals conceded with clean sheets against Brighton, Villa and Fulham).

Second, we don’t play direct football like barcodes or Pool who don’t believe in making 30 passes before having a crack at it.

Third, we have been more measured in possession this season probably because Arteta wants more defensive solidity.

Of course a lot will depend on who all are playing but I still don’t see a cricket score.

G

I’ll b happy with a boring 1-0 win

Josip Skoblar

Latin American football remains more physical than European football. Players get away with shocking fouls. It is like watching Leeds-Sunderland circa 1974. Supporters, notably Argentinian supporters, are also more passionate. I once attended a Boca Juniors game at home, and the crowd really was intimidating in a way I have never experienced in Europe.

Rich

Some players won’t be arriving back from internationals until later today or tomorrow.

Would be nice to get our strongest team out for the first time this season:

……………………..Raya
……White …..Saliba ….Gabriel
………..…..Partey …Zinchenko
Saka Ødegaard Rice Martinelli
…………………….Jesus

But whether we’d risk Partey + Jesus after late returns, and we don’t know how Saka + Saliba are getting on either.

We also seem to be treating Zinchenko with kid-gloves, and he did 87 minutes for Ukraine…. Tomi also did 90 minutes in Japan.

kjelli

Looking at the arsenal sites this morning, I come to the conclusion that sometimes its best to
keep your opinions to yourself; but I am going to state this, No to selling ESR. No to buying Youri Tielmans, lets field our strongest team against Chelsea and have a great weekend as other teams
might drop points !!

Trilbilly

Just on the cost of being a football fan… It’s eye watering stuff, shirts a now twice the price from when I last bought one, match day tickets are silly money, I could only afford to see one match at the Emirates when I lived in London and that was an Emirates Cup match. Kids are being priced out of enjoying football, too expensive to see in person, everything bar FA cup is now behind a very expensive pay wall, kits are ridiculous money, even the game FIFA is over 50quid. Agree with UN. Can we please never discuss women’s football on this platform and any other platform. Woman’s football is ok as it goes but they still have absolutely dire keepers. The BBC does its best to try and load woman’s results ahead of the men’s . Something I’m still not used to and find irritating. Woman’s football imo is also heavily sexualised which does open it up to the question does the best looking woman get the gig? I mean people go on about woke woman mentioning this but literally every female footballer has blonde dyed hair ready for the photo shoot. I don’t think esr is going anywhere. He’s just getting back to proper fitness after surgery. He’s still showing glimpses of what he can do without being match fit. He’s arsenal through and through and I think tets will give him a chance over this season. That’s my hopes at least. If given a chance esr will shine once again.

Only reason I could see him sold is maybe he doesn’t fit into arteras demanding press/defensive duties for attacking players.

Smith Rowe doesn’t press any less than Vieira so that shouldn’t be a problem.

raptora

AFC, nice story. Sounds like things haven’t changed there at all. Endangering the well-being of a colleague over and over again is inexcusable even in a contact sport like football. Sometimes, the end doesn’t justify the means.

jwl

I agree with Pedro’s idea about women football being a way to hook in the youngsters because this is what happened with my niece. The late Wenger years were grim but females were doing brilliant so that helps attract women fans but I watch some of games with my niece and the crowd is families, there are lots of dads/sons there as well, and they having fun time while watching exciting matches.

Also, the third shirt for females this year is terrific design/colour, if any female gooners in your life you should get one.

“Woman’s football imo is also heavily sexualised which does open it up to the question does the best looking woman get the gig? ”

Best thing from the international break was Saka getting that rest. Hopefully he plays against Chelsea but even if he doesn’t make it, think we still have enough not to lose to them at the bridge. We need the 3 points because city and spurs will most likely be picking up max points. The game to Sevilla is tricky. Bankz is right.. a little 3 week break for Saka to recharge feels good… same for Saliba. I hope the 2 weeks helped him with the toe problem.
Chelsea will be tough because they will want to make a statement against a top team, London rivals. We need to convert our chances. I feel like we’re underperforming in that regard this season.

Football needs to get its house in order. When you hear of the massive bribing scandal with Barcelona and now multiple players getting nabbed in gambling, you start wondering how deep the rot really is. All these sketchy ref and VAR decisions and incredulous supposed mental errors from players or suspect lineups by managers make you wonder what’s really going on. Football had better become more diligent. Plus the punishment for gambling needs to be extremely severe….three years should be the mandatory minimum. If a player has a problem then they bloody well better seek help. The game has to… Read more »

Tom – liking it but there’s plenty of chatter about lack of diversity in woman’s football. Indeed the Arsenal woman’s team is completely unrepresentative of the breakdown of UK. Society . In fact the ladies football shot is like the an Arsenal team circa 71 shot.
Virtually every woman footballer is doing the dyed blonde long hair look. There’s a reason for that. It’s for the glamour Hustle side earnings

Luteo Guenreira

Yes I’m sure Funkybunch here is a good source for why a women a quarter of his age dye their hair.

God forbid they just want to look good during a match when there are cameras everywhere, nope they must be trying to get a centerfold on Hustler for the side cash.

Bet Funkybunch never bats eyelid when every single male footballer shows up for gameday with a freshly trimmed beard and hair waxed up to perfection.

jwl

Luteo – I watched some arsenal clip with the three gabbies in summer and they were being asked questions about the three of them and one question was “who spends most time looking in mirror before/after match” and Jesus/Gabriel both looked at Marti and started giggling about how much he groom himself.

I loved that photo of Tierney with his tesco bag while everyone else got their male purses, he proper bloke.

LoveSausage

Some of the comments about the women’s game on here are really cringe-worthy. A lot of tiny dick energy.

The game is developing extremely quickly. You can see improvements in quality year over year now that the clubs are investing. Even if you don’t like to watch it, it can only be a good thing for Arsenal to have a great women’s team. And if it leads to more girls getting involved with the game, so much the better.

Markymark

Love sausage- in Arsenals case – white girls

jwl

So what you’re implying, markymark, is Arsenal are obviously racist? …. because I don’t agree.

LoveSausage

Marky,

So what? The women’s game is still in the early stages of development. Access isn’t equal and there is no infrastructure for finding talented kids across society and funneling them to the clubs. They’ll get there eventually. If football has proven anything, it’s that it’s the closest thing we have to a meritocracy. At least on the pitch. Refereeing and management still have a long way to go.

Jamie

Luteo and LS bang on the money.

Freddie Ljungberg

I’ve seen the accusations (from ig and youtube comments)of Jonas, the womens coach, being racist because of the makeup of the team.

As someone that used to know him back in the day, that’s absolute bollocks, super nice guy, and he was also an Arsenal fan so this must be a dream job for him. Really happy to see him doing well.

Luteo Guenreira

“A lot of tiny dick energy.”

Funkybunch’s dick is so small, whenever he puts it in his wife her immune system tries to fight it.

Markymark

LS – yes so what – it’ll happen at some point , some time maybe in about 10 years . Black woman don’t play football must be the reason .

Markymark

gonorrhea – you so funny 😆

LoveSausage

Marky,

In my experience, one of the defining characteristics of people who aren’t very bright is the inability to differentiate between correlation and causality.

Yes, minority women are underrepresented in football and at Arsenal right now. Do you really believe that the cause is that the people running the club are racist? Or is it more down to the talent infrastructure being underdeveloped, which makes it more likely for kids from certain socio-economic backgrounds (i.e. those who have parents with enough time and money on their hands) to make it to the top?

Markymark

LS – it’s also been mentioned by JWL that I’ve followed a process to find Arsenal racist. No I don’t think any member of the staff is determined to be racist within the woman’s setup . However it’s very easy to be part of a cosy set up and not bother doing any research into why something falls well outside of the norm in society. In fact I suspect Arsenal maybe more bothered with reaction to the photo than you and JWL are. The reason being an inclusion/ diversity HR person and they will exist at Arsenal will get alerted.… Read more »

“gonorrhea – you so funny 😆”

God when your jokes have small dick energy. Stop picking on Nigel, though.

MG42

” It’s quite weird to me that Arteta doesn’t seem to do too well in Europe”

Not really, because he is not as generational as some think, therefore he gets a pasting because he comes up against more experienced managers who are far better in player management and in preparing their players better mentally when facing Arsenal.

It will be an irony of the highest degree and a cluster fuck if we end up in the EL, but then stranger things have happened on Tets watch.

Markymark

Luteo – why you obsessed about Nigel?
Literally every other recent post you send mentions him. That’s a living rent free situation isn’t it.
If you want to insult him then do so . Why try and use me?

You don’t understand much anyway,, it’s alright. But you just stop comparing Nigel to gonorrhea and we’re good. I may not like him but you calling him gonorrhea the other day on my behalf, maybe you thought you were doing me a favour but don’t name call on my behalf like that.

Anyway the premier league can’t come back soon enough.
This international break really sucked.
James seems to have picked up an injury in training so he may miss the game. Great player but he seems to be going down the Tierney route with constant injuries. He will be a big loss for them.

Men commenting and punditing on Ladies tennis was kinda bizarre. The saving grace was MacEnroe and co seeemed tongue in cheek, like patting their niece’s head when she looked nice in a party frock. So men’s football and society in England is diverse as fuck but all those in positions of power in women’s football here are crazy ass racists?

Colour me skeptical…

If anyone wants to insist on more diversity, how about we insist on having a quota of Chinese and Indian players since they are a big part of the worlds population and so under represented in our football teams.

Have fun getting relegated tho lol

It’s a disgrace what many think of Arsenal women and women football in general. Pretty regressive views from a blog with predominantly first world country readers. Shameful.

Kan

It really makes for grim reading on here, the very negative and I daresay misogynistic take on women’s football in general as well as the suggestion of racism as the cause of absence of minority women in the Arsenal Women squad.

Women’s football may not be everyone’s cuppa, but as some posters noted, the quality has been steadily on the rise, and this partly explains the increase of bums on seats.

allezkev

I see that some Italian ‘red top’ has reported that Juventus would be prepared to take Jorginho off of our hands but have stipulated that they’ll only take him if he’s on a free…

How big of them!

Personally I reckon we’ll give that generous offer a pass.

Madhu

You have to watch Arsenal women team regularly to know what they have achieved. Last season they won a cup, top 3 and a semi finals in CL despite 5 key players had an ACL. The effort and spirit they display for the club was amazing to be seen. They get paid pittance compared to their men counterpart . To read such comments of our own club and against women who constitute 50% of humanity is disappointing to say the least.

China1

Yeah you can tell they just haven’t been paying attention as women’s football quality is on a steep upwards curve If you are remembering matches from even a couple of years ago you’re already well out of date on the top level of women’s football (lower levels are another story) As for the racism, I’m 34 so not much older than the senior players of this generation. China1

The amount they get paid is directly related to the amount of money they generate, same as all professions None of us are paid for how hard we work but how much value we bring to our company As women’s football continues to improve, the number of people watching and buying merch along with ticket sales and sponsorships increase – as that happens salaries and transfer fees for quality players rises accordingly Saka probably sells more shirts than the entire women’s team 100x over – that’s why the men are paid much more. My gripe with women in football is that I was replaced by a chick in our rep team at age 17 😂😂😂 she was more positionally robust apparently. Also didn’t know women could play for the men’s (teens) team at the time.

I’ll take all the stick that comes my way from that comment haha

Goobergooner

China that is the thing, once the quality improves so will everything else.
Girls take up football in Australia way more than any other sport. And it is shown in how strong the women’s Australian team has become.

On home soil I thought we may even be able to achieve something incredible. Not to be, but the atmosphere in aus for the women’s game was really exceptional.

Goobergooner

In regards to the chick taking my spot. Our team sucked 🤣🤣🤣so I must have been shocking

Mee

One thing I do not get about women’s footy is why romantic relationships between individual players seems to be the norm. Including players in the same team! That surely cannot be good for team dynamics. It devalues the women’s game by creating unnecessary sideshows and soap opera vibes.

If it happened in the men’s game, there would be an uproar. The end of civilization as we know it.

Goobergooner

Mee
Maybe those side shows will get more women to watch haha. My partner knew all about the Aussie team during the world cup for their off field endeavours

Goobergooner

It makes you wonder how many gay (sorry if that offends anyone )players are actually in the means top tier.

It’s seemingly harder for men to come out that is for sure

Mee

Goobergooner Maybe those side shows will get more women to watch haha. My partner knew all about the Aussie team during the world cup for their off field endeavours Said off-field endeavors are certainly detrimental to the product as they often involve sexual interactions with fellow teammates. What if player A and player B, dating and in the same team, have a domestic scuffle on the morning of an important game? There is a high possibility that they will not communicate effectively on the pitch, they might refuse to pass the ball to each other. Insane! From a purely entertainment… Read more »
