WHO TO SELL?

by .

Welcome to FriYAY people; we have lots of things to talk about. But first, take a moment to congratulate yourself for getting through a week of international break things. Ok, we feeling good?

Let’s get into it.

Jack Wilshere has been linked with a move to Colorado Rapids in MLS. The same conference as my team. I visited the away day there. Loads of nice people, close to the mountains, a team that is not doing so well – plenty of food for thought. Jack Wilshere bringing Arsenal football to America? I don’t hate it people. I’m glad he’s pursuing all options and it’s interesting to see Josh K roll out his young rookie coach strategy on another club.

There are some rumblings that Arsenal will have to sell to buy in January. John Cross reckons Ivan T could be on the list for Arsenal, but it ain’t gonna be easy, and it ain’t gonna be cheap.

My gut on this one? If we’re selling anyone it’s going to be Aaron Ramsdale. I think his cheering from the dugout and ‘I WILL FIGHT FOR MY PLACE’ vibes will last for about 4 more games when he realizes the path back into the first team is blocked barring a massive injury to David Raya. He’s a great keeper, he’ll have a market value, the question is whether anyone is in that sort of need in January. £40m would be my number, but that’s because I’m biased. It’ll be interesting to see if Brentford might be interested in him? Not sure their current keeper is up to much – Aaron will take minutes – it could make sense.

England gave a debut to Eddie Nketiah but he didn’t start ahead of Ollie Watkins. The Villa man has been on fire this season, so deserved his place. But Eddie getting minutes means Chris Hughton’s dream of taking him to Ghana is now OVER. Still, for all the Eddie slanderers, it’s nice to see him get an England cap. He has a long way to go to be an Arsenal first choice striker, but he’s had lots of minutes and he’s played in a team that’s winning. Arsenal doesn’t win with 10 men, so he’s clearly at a very high level. He has to score more goals if he wants to be taken seriously for England when Kane is out of contention.

Newcastle is apparently eyeing up Emile Smith Rowe in January for £50m. If we get a bid like that, no doubt we’ll sell, the question would be… does he make them stronger? To be honest, I don’t think that would be a question Arsenal would care about asking, we’d just sell him and be done with it if money like that crossed the table. The only way we don’t see him exit is if he starts delivering with the minutes he’s given. I watched Tom Brady do one o of those ‘Here’s how to be like me’ TikTok posts. He said he was only given 2 minutes to practice with the first team. It pissed him off. Then a coach said ‘treat those 2 minutes like it was your Superbowl. So he did. He went really hard at it, brought energy to training, then he started getting 4 minutes. Then 4 turned into 20. Then he became a KING! You get the gist… Emile has to think like that if he wants to get back to the promised land. Or he could just take a fat move to Newcastle.

Finally, Victor Oshimen has fallen out with Napoli after their social media manager called him a coconut on TikTok. An absolutely WILD thing for someone to think, let alone post on the Serie A Champions social page. Needless to say, the striker wants out, and Arsenal has been linked as a suitor. I love the player, but I can’t see him exiting for less than £120m. Is he £60m better than Ivan Toney? Who knows. But Italian papers say we might swap Victor for Jesus. If the Italians can’t be arsed to put together a plausible swap, it’s not worth dreaming about.

Ok, that’s me done. If you want some HAWT Patreon content, we just dropped a special Q&A below.

I am not sure about the wisdom of selling ESR. What do I know !

Markymark

Fking hell I could be having a bad January- ESR and Ramsdale going ! Heart and soul being ripped out. Apparently Elneny gets a freebie coz everyone likes him. But two great young British players get kicked out ? let’s just hope this is shit talking

allezkev

After watching Newcastle flip-flop over Tierney I wouldn’t take them too seriously over Smith Rowe, also they won’t bid anything at all like the £50m quoted for him in the media if they did actually bid at all.

jwl

Pedro or anyone else that knows mls – is it difficult to bring in foreign players on loan to domestic club?

I’ve wondered for awhile now why aren’t the Kroenkes using their Colorado football team as development stage for our youngsters. Lovely part of world, playing against older pros, and we still control their development/playing time so they don’t rot on bench because random euro club made mistake taking them on loan in first place.

allezkev

Not that I want them to bid.

englandsbest

A painful post, talk abut selling two of my faves. I don’t see either happening.

jwl

And I forgot that Denver international airport has connections to New World Order and has some crazy art, according to locals, and there are a lot of exceedingly fit cornfed, fresh air raised women. A lot to like about Colo, our youngsters would have time of their lives there.

Josip Skoblar

Karim is on fire tonight! 🙂

jwl

You knock me over with feather if Brentford buy Ramsdale and we keep Raya, why would they pay more than we did for their keeper, and on bigger salary, for player we rejected.

Mysticleaves

It’s crazy when Leno was talking about the GK situation and why he left citing politics, many just thought he wasn’t a good competitior then cos Ramsdale was favoured. Same thing is happening all over again. Difference is Ramsdale is still fake cheering

Useroz

Newcastle has been cheap and would probably bid 20m for ESR, no where close to 50m! Hope he isn’t the one to make way in January.

The title says who to sell…. what about others we’d have moved on couple of months earlier who should fetch tidy money? Why are Elney and Soares still around? If Tierney no longer wanted by Arteta, sell him for 20m…

What about Nelson or Eddie if we do serious transfer business in January , assuming a sell before buy model?

LoveSausage

I can see us moving on from Jesus next summer but hardly in January. He’s too integral to the way we play to rip him out of the squad in the middle of the season. As for ESR, let’s see if he actually gets some minutes between now and the TW. Can’t help but think that he could have changed the narrative if he’d just been a bit luckier in the Brentford game. If we get a good bid we should probably take it. That said, 50M for a player that doesn’t play isn’t realistic and Newcastle are pretty frugal.… Read more »

I, with no connections in football whatsoever, am gonna go out on a limb and disagree with Pedro on Ramsdale. If he truly fights for his place and impresses Arteta, why couldn’t he be a tactical alternative to Raya?? It would add another interesting tactical layer to our squad and if Aaron is anything, he is a fighter. I will be disappointed in him if he gives up so soon. He has the talent to start semi-regularly for Arsenal again, this season and in the future. This is written more in hope/gut instinct than anything because Pete does hear things… Read more »

I don’t understand all the “taking sides” in the keeper situation. I have been the biggest Ramsdale defender from the moment we began pursuing him against the cretinous “relegator” comments online. I have supported him the same till now, forgiving mistakes too. But if the manager wants more from his keeper, and found one who gives it to us, I’ll support that new guy, Raya. If the coach sees something that makes him want Ramsdale back as number 1, I’ll assume he, at least, has his own reasons. Raya is better at most aspects of the game that Arteta values.… Read more »

Milo

I like both keepers as well and see the value of having two strong ones.

I don’t buy the conspiratorial/cultural stuff.

Raya is the better fit tactically, but I think Ramsdale will improve. I think he will back himself as well.

Just a gut feeling.

Nigel Tufnel

Those Leno quotes about politics and personalities costing hin a fair shot at the top spot…….Nonsense. That’s just what he tells himself to feel better.

Arteta was tired of the whole stadium and fanbase at home, holding their breath whenever Leno got pressed.
Also tired of him getting pushed around on crosses and corners.

He’s a great stopper, but does noting else that Arteta was looking to build with.
Ramsdale was much closer to the attributes, and now Raya is even closer to the managers perfect keeper.
Leno never would work in this current setup long term.

Madhu

Looking at the onana situation at Man U why wouldn’t they come with a 50 M for Rams. He is English with a big personality and they would consider him as a prized asset. There is a distinct possibility that Man U can come for Rams. Would Arteta sell him? Much as I hate the very idea of selling ESR and I hate the notion that we treat a Hale Ender like that but for his own career sake it might be better for ESR to leave. Pedro s take and his claims that he is on the inside saying… Read more »

From X:
Kai Havertz has a goal and an assist in his last two Premier League matches which puts him level with Manchester United’s star man, Marcus Rashford this season.

China1

Yeah sorry but no sympathy for Leno He got injured and his replacement played far better. He was still given a free walk back into the starting 11 which was a big mistake. He is a really good shot stopper but Fulham is his level and he should accept that Can’t believe we have to sit through another week of internationals no one cares about Said it before and will say it again, why not just let all domestic football around the world finish earlier without breaks and then have all these qualifying tournaments and friendlies after the league ends?… Read more »

That’s why I find it amusing hearing about Henderson getting booed

Those people care enough about these internationals to pay for tickets? To go to wembley? And even enough to boo a player?

Where does that level of interest come from???? 😂

China1

I also can’t be arsed to take sides so far in the keeper debate

Both are good keepers

I don’t mind who is picked as long as they play well – that should be the basis of who gets picked in any team and in any position.

As long as the players aren’t being lied to by the manager etc then whatever

Siddeeq

“””It’s my fault, all my fault. They can boo me because I ask him to do that and especially against this team you start to do other things and you get in big, big, big trouble. I think he was excellent.””

Generational implying Ramsdale doesnt follow instructions.
We all know, Not following instructions is a Non negotiable.

Siddeeq

Talent, theres Not much difference between Raya and Rams.
The problem must be about a Non negotiable.

Siddeeq

Nketiah is an English international, up there with Harry Kane, Rooney, Shearer

Markymark

I keep hearing Raya is the better keeper , I keep hearing huge plaudits for a lay off from Kai and then we keep getting told by Pedro – “It is the Way” well ok the last bit is the Mandalorian but you get my drift about some sort of cult think.
I’ll genuinely say well done to both Kai and Raya when they have excellent games. It’s just I’m still waiting.

Markymark

Nigel – I don’t think you can just dismiss a comment from a player in the press. He maybe talking bullshine but he must think it otherwise he wouldn’t say it. Plenty of players just move on as part of the extremely lucrative gravy train without going to the press. It’s likely a thought or feeling stirred it. Inaki has a bad rep mentioned on the site previously. In fact I believe our very own Pedro has slated him over his disaster Runnarrson choice. It appears Inaki imposes players into the system once he’s had a chat with Arteta in… Read more »

Nigel – I will add though that ultimately I’m glad Leno did go as he was weak around the crosses. Sometimes though you can have two wrongs. A bit like a work situation where you have an underperforming colleague with a hectoring manager.
Manager of course will stay until a huge shit storm emerges.

Howard

Please, Le Grove, you talk as if we don’t know Emile. RSR was the leading scorer two seasons ago, got injured and he’s now terrible? Arteta don’t give him chance to play now. ESR has goals in him but Arteta prefers 35m Mendes’ Fabio who hasn’t delivered and often shoot to Row Z and 65m player yet to score.

Arteta don’t play ESR and his preferences are not delivering.
Arsenal should rather sell Nketiah, Elneny and Cedtic.

Aasim

So Eddie is 4th choice England striker. Behind Kane, Toney and Watkins. But, he is kinda our main striker (he’s started the most games as striker for us this season).

NOT GOOD ENOUGH.

Not good enough even as a back up. Check the 4th best striker for top 5 European international teams and see who they represent on the club level.

Guns of Hackney

Who to sell? In no particular order.

1. Zinchenko. Useless.
2. Fabio Vieria. Dire.
3. Eddie. Nope.
4. Jesus. Not good enough to lead a line.
5. Tommi. Injury prone.
6. Partey. Old and injury prone. What exactly was the point keeping him? Injured 1st game of the season I think.

There might be £150m in there on a good day.

By the way, vlahovic is owning the league at the moment. Looking every bit the proper centre forward we haven’t had for ever.

Northbanker

Why sell Ramsdale – just don’t agree. We then lose a player who is young enough to improve further. We’d have no number 2 keeper and then are one injury away from a using a seriously inexperienced keeper or we buy some washed has been or never was on the market for that purpose

Keep the Ram and I look forward to the version on 2 years time once again being our no 1

Northbanker

If by Jan nothing has changed with ESR AND Newcastle really are offering £50m then it would be mad not to accept I still however see him as a genuine alternative to Kai and gives us different options in matches. I really hope that becomes the reality as it would be a truly exciting one for the club. In the background I am mindful that ESR really has only this season to re establish himself . By next year we are going to see first team fringe activity for both Lewis Skelly and Nwaneri and maybe the return of Patino.… Read more »

Morning all. God I hate these international breaks!
Interesting post and comments so far. I’m happy having two keepers but feel they’re both pretty equal really and not the priority.

For those of us of an older generation, who remembers when George Graham sold John Lukic. The Highbury crowd were singing “don’t go Lukic, don’t go”

Then David Seaman joined as the then record price for a GK and the rest, as they say, is history…..

Wouldn’t it be great if the Raya arrival has similar impact? Well we can dream….

Foxy

What is a bit ironic about the Ramsdale situation is that he was bigged up on this blog for being the ideal upgrade to Leno for being stronger on crosses and having excellent distribution. Now we are being told that he is poor on these two attributes and has to be upgraded by Raya. Rams has the natural ability but is it the coaching that is failing or his mental approach to the game or both. Maybe like a big puppy dog he may calm down in a year or two and reach his potential but he needs to understand… Read more »

Bob N16

Sid, have you spent much time in England? You seem to be so well informed, I can only assume it’s not just what you’ve picked up from afar!

More on the Raya Ramsdale debate: Ramsdale, in his notes in the Players Tribune, confessed that he had shouting matches with Arteta about his positioning. Arteta wanted him higher on the pitch which he found uncomfortable. They had to settle for a compromise positioning. Clearly, Arteta has found a keeper of sufficient bravery to play how he wants the games played. Raya is therefore his #1. Ramsdale has to prove in training and in less testing matches, that he is willing to cultivate the bravery to follow instructions. He is assured of Arteta’s backing as we have seen he do… Read more »

To be honest, i’m surprised smith rowe is still at rhe club , I said about 18 months ago that he is not an Arteta type player and nothing I’ve seen since has made me change my mind.. I also don’t think Havertz is an Arteta type player other than he doesn’t like to take risks with the ball, so I am surprised he paid so much for a player who (unlike smith rowe)is obviously lacking technically in front of goal.. Bob N16

Pierre, it’s a shame but unless there’s an injury crisis and ESR gets plenty of starts to re establish himself, he’ll be gone through a lack of playing time. Love his style of playing. I suppose if we get decent money it would soften the blow.

raptora

What would soften the blow is winning the PL within the next couple of years. Any decision made beforehand wouldn’t have matter much as long as we lift the title. This season is gonna be 20 since we last won it. 2 decades is a long time…

Pierre

Nigel
“Kai Havertz has a goal and an assist in his last two Premier League matches which puts him level with Manchester United’s star man, Marcus Rashford this season”

Should also be said that Havertz has one more assist from open play than Odegaard this season, make of that what you will….

Havertz….one assist from open play.
Odegaard..zero assists from open play.

Scoring penalties is a good way to improve a player’s stats but personally I believe more credit should go to the player who wins the penalty..

Wicked Willy

The main focus this year seems to be to be the best off the ball team in the world. Dev and Kai fit that bill. ESR and Maddison do not.

Obvs if we want to be truly great, then we need killer on the ball merchants as well, which is why I love Timber signing so much. Hopefully Anaí comes good, and Emile Can develop his off ball work because on it he’s poetry

Terraloon

Pedro

England gave a debut to Eddie Nketiah but he didn’t start ahead of Ollie Watkins. The Villa man has been on fire this season, so deserved his place. But Eddie getting minutes means Chris Hughton’s dream of taking him to Ghana is now OVER.

Not sure that’s right. The rules allow a player in certain circumstances to change nationality even if they have played in a competitive international ( yesterday’s game was a friendly) . Declan Rice for instance played 3 times for ROI at full International level

Zacharse

Sid

your thoughts on the pedestrianization of Norwich City Centre?

Markymark

Bob N16 – I spent some time down in Ipswich had a flat on the Docks and fun it was to. Sort of like a cut price St Katherine’s dock.
Anyway you can walk into any pub there as an Arsenal man have a good chat with the Tractor Boys and enjoy an Adnams or 5. Go in with a Canary kit on and unfortunately one would be wearing the drink and a lot worse. There’s definitely worse places to live than Ipswich. I enjoyed my time there .

Bob N16

MarkyM, I only know Ipswich and the docks a little. I know other areas of Suffolk much better! Lovely county. I played village cricket for around ten years so know the countryside and the pubs in West Suffolk particularly well!

Markymark

Bob N16 – it’s God’s country I reckon. We are lucky the wife’s father has a very old house that way so we stay there a fair bit and enjoy the coast.

Bob N16

MarkyM, had a family getaway as a kid in Thorpeness. No coastal road really means the coastal towns and villages are even more characterful. Have friends near Halesworth, Saxmundham and outside Bury St Edmunds.

Positive pete

Bob N16.What’s wrong with ‘ provincial England’.Quite enjoyed visiting the ‘ carrot crunchers’ on my last visit.Beautiful part of uk.Bit rich coming from the ‘ tractor boys’ !

Bob N16

PositiveP nothing wrong with provincial England, quite the opposite. I was just making the point that if someone is visiting England , in my opinion, you need to experience both London and ‘the provinces’ to get a full impression of the country.

I have no stake in the Ipswich v Norwich debate!

Kpankulu

Pierre: Maddison is gone so let it be.

Of course, you could convince the Board to fire Arteta and hire you instead, then you could use your silver tongue to attract Maddison to the club.

The current manager has his reasons for not asking for that player. It is too early to judge if that was a good decision or not. In this social media age we cannot wait for a season – we must know now!

Kpankulu

Siddeeq: You know quite well Saliba was not exiled. He was kept abreast of every stage of his development when Arteta came to club and while they may not have agreed on everything, Saliba is still at the club in 2023 under the same management, AND signed a multi-year contract. Do the human math.

Foxy doesn’t understand how the follows things can both be true:

Ramsdale is better than Leno at claiming crosses, high balls, and also at distribution.
Then…… that Raya is better than Ramsdale at those same 2 things.

Where is the malfunction? It’s not really a tricky set of inputs.

Basically you are saying sell Ramsdale as he is surplus to requirements in the league and champions league..

Nigel Tufnel

Marky, I did say that Leno is telling himself (not lying) that it was internal politics to make himself feel better. Ramsdale over Leno turned out to be the most obvious decision for the coaches and manager in hindsight. Only the ignorance of the “keyboard cowards” (Ramsdales phrase) in the beginning made it seem like a big deal to make a clear upgrade in the way we wanted to play. Arteta, and whatever scouts recommended Ramsdale, were 100% correct. The doubters calling him “the relegator” on legrove looked pretty stupid. That is a well known fact. Arsenal had the best away record in the PL last season, and we haven’t conceded a goal away in the league yet this season. I’m not worried about goals + creativity, the problem we’re facing is that the word is out that Arsenal are quite good, and most teams now park the bus.. Most amusing seeing the same posters who told others to stop whining about Arteta’s judgment re keepers when he sold Martinez, now whining about Raya taking Ramsdale’s spot.

Not to mention buying Runnarson and Turner, of course. The first one looking like a complete miss, and the second not much better, which was hardly surprising considering he started his keeping career at 15yo or something.

Whatever happened to trust the process, fellas?

Pierre

10 points is enough to win the group as long as we beat lens at home….Will be a tight group with no team dominating.
A point in sevilla is acceptable , followed by 2 home games.

Tom Turner wasn’t a miss, we turned a small profit, which financially wiped out the miss with Runarsson. Regarding goalkeepers… There’s supposed to be healthy churn in the backup positions… As long as we’re not losing large sums, we should expect steady movement. If we have a second choice keeper for more than 2 seasons, it would suggest that they’re too comfortable in their position, and that’s unhealthy. We shouldn’t really have a third choice keeper beyond one season, I’m surprised that Hein isn’t kicking up a stink behind the scenes.. He’s 22 in April…. He should be doing what… Read more »
