RAYA PROPAGANDA

by .

What do we want?

NO INJURIES

When do we want it?

All season.

Sometimes you need a crap opener to loosen the typing fingers.

Arsenal internet seems to be buzzing along, beating City for the first time since 1942 is a helluva salve for an international break.

David Raya is getting some just praise for his performance and some folk are going out of their way to put context on some of his passing statistics this season.

Basically, there’s a hipster movement that is slapping people down for getting angry at the passing of David Raya. Whilst I do consider myself as part of any Arsenal hipster movement, you can’t ignore the first half of David Raya against City, and you can’t ignore some of the errors we’ve seen over the past few weeks. He fucked up against Lens and he wasn’t great for the defence in the first half against City with some very loose decision-making.

BUT…

He’s a new player, playing at a big club for the first time, learning the movements of much better players. He’s going to fuck up. It takes time to bed yourself in. There is such a lack of empathy for new talent. Not everyone can slip into a system as well as Declan Rice, but at the same time, not every player costs £105m.

David Raya, however you cut it, is a better keeper than Aaron Ramsdale. That’s why he’s #1.

Kai Havertz is in a similar boat – I think his second-half performance against City took the pressure off him a little. We know he’s decent. But I think a lot of people liked him as a #9 or maybe see his talents as a false 9.

Again, he’s learning a new position, at a new club, with a new coach who demands a lot of his players. What we all like about him is:

  • He’s calm on the ball
  • He offers a lot of control
  • He works like a dog
  • He offers us aerial power and a lot of aggression

We’re still waiting for him to bang, but the talent is there, and it doesn’t matter how much you dislike him, you can’t deny that we’re doing well with him in the side.

We’re 2 points better off than we were last season, we’ve conceded 2 fewer goals, and we’ve scored 2 less.

Not bad. We are on the March to a very good season.

Bukayo Saka went out to England camp, it was reported they were checking his injury. I’m not sure I totally believe that. Arsenal probably have pretty good relations with the Arsenal medics – because they have to. My guess is maybe Bukayo wanted to be around the squad. Most Premier League fans don’t like international football, but the players do. When you’re a big name, you want to be around your brothers in arms.

It’s also good news from an injury perspective. He’s fit enough to go to camp. If he had a big problem, he’d be sat on a sofa. My suspicions are that he’ll be ready after the break. We’ll need him, three games in a week, three that we need to win. Trossard returned from injury after a similar hamstring issue (that blew up against City).

The next batch of the season is going to be exciting. We’ll have bigger squad of players to choose from, players will feel more comfortable in the system, and there will be that bonding XP you get from a massive win.

Right, short one today, jump on our post.

Couldn’t agree more
Today it’s systems and micro managers
I preferred when players were allowed to read the game and make on field decisions
When they were allowed to create and move
When clever footballers could express themselves and leaders were allowed to lead and show their actual character and personality

All the biggest moments I’ve ever witnessed in for all came in this period
The best goals

Yes if any civilians from any nation have been hurt by Hamas then they have my sympathy
However Isreal has no choice now but to strike back and demolish this threat against their people

442 was mostly an English tactic, its stiff upper lip football, just like the food, music etcmanagers and players of varied nationalities introduced finesse to the game

Sid
442 was big in Germany Italy Sweden France and Holland too
Even Spain adopted it for over a decade

Siddeeq

England used 442 mainly since the 60s after copying it from some boring Russian(Maslov),

Sweden, Netherlands, France, Italy have been flexible.

“Most Premier League fans don’t like international football, but the players do. ” The missus has been making me watching the 4 part Beckham docu on Netflix, it’s interesting that yeah, for the players the national team is the pinnacle. Both Beckham and Scholes acted like they were completely in awe of being called up. I have to say, Beckham comes over really well in it, just a normal lad who was good at football, a very genuine and humble guy for the most part. Interesting to see the ’98 v Argentina stuff still bothers him today, I think he… Read more »

Un: You are correct about Smith Rowe. That was unintentional. Personally, I think he could be a more-than adequate false nine to back up Jesus. He really is an x-factor, and amid all the clamor about him I can only imagine that fitness issues are the primary reason why he is not starting games. It would be great for him to stay, but when all is said and done if he feels he is back fully and wants regular game time and may get it elsewhere, it’s his life and he has to do what works for him. I really… Read more »

Children no longer play football out on the street, they take a ride to football academies where expressive free flowing football is discouraged and structured play coached.

“You almost wanted them to throw caution to the win and turn it into a basketball game…” – AFCF

I am sure this must have been considered and downvoted before, but the concept of 0 points for goalless draws seems interesting to me.

This might force teams to try to score at least one goal before parking the bus.

Obviously it would be somewhat harsh towards smaller teams who may not have enough quality in midfield and attack.

Garry Neville: ‘They’re (Jesus and Nketiah) not wired to score goals. Instinctively the runs that goalscorers make they hold back, they look for a pull back.’

I just had the wild thought that maybe, just maybe, that’s exactly what the manager wants them to do?! Mind-blowing, I know.

jwl

I agree with Sid, kids don’t play outside anymore where they would spend hours learning cruff turns and whatnot. Now they only play within organized structures and coaches hate fancy maneuvers and just want players to play regular, five yard passes and that it.

Markymark – All iam saying is that Rams and Raya should get equal chances this season. Last season Rams was fighting against Matt Turner and won the race… [@Madhu] Apples and oranges, Madhu: Matt Turner was never in competition with Aaron Ramsdale. After a short uncertain period [when Raya joined the team], the same situation is back in place. Ramsdale is not in competition with David Raya right now. People are waiting for Mikel Arteta to make a definitive statement on who the main goalkeeper is – and that wait will be in vain. In this case, actions are speaking… Read more »

AFC,
I actually wonder why he’s been given a platform. None of what he says is thought-provoking, intelligent, eye-opening or smart. He’s not even funny or likable. Inaki of course knows Raya from around 2019 and apparently wanted him for Arsenal, Here is a Leno comment 2022 When I realised that it wasn’t about performance or quality, I knew I had to go,” Leno told German newspaper Sport Bild. “During the preparation I saw that it’s not… Read more »

Not surprised a military backed land grab, like in Ukraine, never bothered you much.
It must’ve been a great personal tragedy for you the British empire is no more.

Hitman

Or perhaps the Palestinians had no choice. Had enough of oppression and loss of land and nationhood for 80 years.

One, land disputes are rarely solved peacefully
And two, land disputed between two different religions even less so

The upside of course for both parties is….there’s the eternal glory of the afterlife alongside whichever imaginary deity they believe in

Tom

jwl, you lost me at the Ivan the Great bit, but I’m sure you got that quote of mine handy

Luteo Guenreira

It was just a way of portraying that no one that actually has a say in these kinds of matters would be willing to set aside their own ego for the sake of innocent lives, even whether those lives are compatriots or not in most cases. @Zacharase. The action of Israel on Palestinians has been an act of war, especially in the Gaza Strip.
