AFC BOURNEMOUTH PREVIEW

by .

I’m a bit late to the party on the Brentford game, but I have some hot takes.

1. That was a GOOD win.

Brentford doesn’t get beaten at their place often… we delivered a very clean win against a team packed with first-teamers. I thought we’d lose that game because of the amount of changes made. I was wrong. We’re finally getting to a stage where we’re a ‘next man up’ kind of club. Gone are the day where the player doing the domestic cups would mail it in. I loved the make-up of the squad, it was youth, a bit of experience, a random debut, and a spirited performance. For all the embarrassing histrionics we’ve seen this season, we’re now at 6 wins and 2 draws. Pretty decent, wouldn’t you say?

2. Aaron Ramsdale

He’s here for the fight. The performance was vintage Aaron. A few shaky moments, but mostly all good. He made a brilliant save that contributed to the win, his kicking was really bold (even though his completion rate was a smidge over 50%), he also commanded his box really well. Will he start against Bournemouth? Doubt it. I think he’s the domestic cups guy now.

3. Kai Slander

People are now fully in the mode of critiquing performances that don’t merit it. He played well. His game is simple at the moment. I thought he did well in possession, he connected play really well, and he gave the side solidity from a defensive perspective. There was no goal or assist – but those are coming. The biggest concern about him in Xhaka’s position was defensive diligence – he has that, and now people are worried he might not be able to attack. He’ll come good there, we’re gonna get Leverkusen Kai. We have to remember, he’s learning a new position, he’s under extreme pressure, and things aren’t falling his way. When they do – just remember the slanderers.

4. ESR

I thought he looked good. There were no real concerns over fitness. Some folk on the internet reckon his issues with Arteta come from a lack of pressing. The player himself said he sometimes doesn’t take instruction well. It’s simple for him – get it together and make a case to stay. Or mail it in and leave in January. I hope he stays, he’s a lovely player to watch, and he deserves to be playing at our level.

5. Kiwior

I might be imagining it, but the bulk we wanted Vieira to put on seems to have gone to the Polish defender. He is a BIG boy, has he been stealing from Fabio’s plate? I loved his game. He’s a menace. Very strong in the tackle. Good passing range. He’s also very aggressive. He’ll be knocking on the door soon I’d imagine. Remember, we picked him up because the club worried he’d become a £50m defender if we left him in Italy for another season.

We have West Ham in the next round, that should be a fun game, we can call it the Declan Derby.

There are some injury rumours doing the rounds at the moment. Reports suggesting Saliba might be carrying a knock are worrying. But I do think it’s worth noting that Arteta revels in the confusion around who is and is not available.

My guess would be this: The only players not in the squad tomorrow will be Partey and Martinelli. We could see some names rested, especially after good performances against Brentford. But by the time City comes around, we’ll have a full batch of players to choose from.

I think having Partey and Martinelli in the mixer for City would be HUGE for Arteta – I just hope he isn’t rolling the dice on fitness so early in the season.

Right, short one today – get on the latest Patreon BEFORE THE WHISTLE if you need the content in your life.

Yeah, ESR and Zinchenko would be a worry but I would think they would enough against Bournemouth.

Muppetman

And to think Ollie Watkins wasn’t picked for the last England squad but Nketiah was…

Agree with this comment would take Watkins any day over Eddie

allezkev

Bad day at the office so far for Brighton

Markymark

All the De Zerbi fans over there – say Yo! Say Yo!

Hey I can’t hear you !

Karsa

ESR won’t have recovered enough from the Brentford game to start imo.

20 minutes from the bench would be about right.

GD4

Too early to criticize him and I’m sure he’ll score cuz I mentioned him but I expected so much more from MD.
Had a lot of hype but he hasn’t delivered at the level expected … still adapting I’m sure

WengerEagle

”Where’s the world class Ferguson?”

The lad is 18, he’s far from world class but the potential is there for anyone to see.

Habesha Gooner

Muppet,

Lol I see it now. I meant Riess on the right.

WengerEagle

And it’s so strange how guys like Un and Tufnel who lick the arse of basically every Arsenal player hate one of our only truly elite potential ones in Martinelli.

Un basically thinks he’s Walcott 2.0 which is beyond laughable. You’d also swear that Trossard is Pires 2.0 by listening to these go on.

GD4

Ollie Watkins has almost been unplayable this first half.
Dunk can’t wait till half time lol

Habesha Gooner

Brighton have looked like shambles at the back today. Wow. Emery seems to have figured out a way to get at their back line. They have lost confidence because of those goals and are now looking like Championship defenders. I figure they will be much better in the 2nd half though.

Samesong

WE

Thought he was older. Big lad for his age.

Just Another Customer

Martinelli the head down pace merchant lol

Socrates

To have Saka, Saliba, Rice, Partey, Martinelli and Trossard all with fatigue related injuries is simply not bad luck just a few games into the new season. There seems to be a problem with either our fitness coaches or training regime. Something has to change

WengerEagle

I’ve always liked Watkins but he doesn’t score enough to earn a move to a team better than Villa.

He’s one of those on his day he can kill you players and boy has today been his day.

allezkev

Hopefully Ferguson will have a poor season, then we can possibly get him in the summer for an affordable fee?

Siddeeq

Bad ebening for Brighton

WengerEagle

Samesong

This kid is the real deal, 10 PL goals and 2 assists in just 13 starts and 25 overall apps. He’s already scored twice for the NT too.

I know all about dud strikers as we have only ever produced them outside of Robbie Keane and this lad ain’t one.

Gazza

If Emery had been backed as much as Arteta then he may well have done better for us

Batistuta

Marko

Questioned myself once or twice with Havertz to try and see it but its just not there, goodness knows what otherz see that give them hope he’d be anything other than slightly better than he is now.

That said, curious to see him at 9 instead of Nketiah who is just not it for us if we are to be very honest

Samesong

WE I like him. Was just baiting Pierre a bit 🎣

allezkev

Everyone is suffering from injuries, Sheffield Utd, Man Utd and Chelsea are into double figures, too much football and not enough rest and recovery time for the players.

Samesong

Loved Niall Quinn as a yute.

WengerEagle

Havertz was dire as the 9 for Chelsea for what it’s worth.

Then again, so has everyone they have ever put there outside of Drogba and Diego Costa.

LoveSausage

Rough day out for Brighton.

Villa don’t get enough credit for how they’ve been building a very competent squad without mortgaging their future. They could become dangerous in a season or two.

WengerEagle

Samesong

Quinn had his moments and seasons, as did Shane Long and even Kevin Doyle to a lesser extent.

Ferguson is already better than all of the above for me though and he’s a kid.

He’ll very likely go on to better Keane’s PL career albeit bettering his NT exploits will be difficult because Robbie Keane carried us on his back for years and has an incredible goal record, 67 overall which is more than any English player has ever managed (Kane soon to break this) up until now.

Yakubu has settled down. He and his gf are expecting their first child.

Dissenter

Why waste time on Havertz as number 9?
Why not just move him on before his stock drops even further, we’ll still get half of wages we paid for him. Just as much as Chelsea got for Timo Werner in 2020.
He’s been tried in that role in the same league and it wasn’t particularly pretty.

WengerEagle

Sell him in January Dissenter? Lol, to who?

I’m not at all a fan but give him the season at least to prove himself.

Un

”Where’s the world class Ferguson?”

Samesong
Eh? I go said he was world class? He’s a boy. But he’s naturally more gifted than 90% of strikers in world football

Habesha Gooner

Ferguson is top drawer so far. Unless he pulls a Francis Jeffers, he is destined for the top.

My lineup today would be

Raya, White, Tomi, Gabriel, Zinchenko, Jorginho, Odegaard, Havertz, ESR, Jesus, Nelson.

You can put in Kiwior in place of Gabriel or White if you want to rest one of them. I thought about Viera but it would be a bit light weight against the likes of Billing.

TR7

I am of the view Harvertz should be made a back up player this season so that there’s less spotlight on him. Arteta starting him everytime is kind of desperate and will only make life difficult for both of them.

City are a juggernaut and we can’t afford to give so much game time to a player who is struggling.

Nelson, ESR, Trosaard etc. look more the part than Harvertz

salparadisenyc

What ever it takes to get Havertz out of the mid. Maybe in true LG fashion he’ll go out and have a blinder this afternoon.

Habesha Gooner

Joao Pedro was also a miss for a lot of top teams. 30 mil for him was good business from Brighton. Went in early to get him too. The guy is class. Jesus esque.

Check on going for a goal produced by him.

Un

Eagle

You’ve got a hard on for lately
Yes I think that martinelli is limited and plays with his head down. I do not think he’s the cleverest player I’ve seen by a long shot.
But his mentality and physicality makes him a danger and one of the best wide forwards in world football
His game is similar to Theo in that he’s an instinct player
When the game slows down and there bodies in front of him, he struggles more than the majority of the rest of our attacking players
He and Eddie both

Muppetman

Lucky Le Grove wasn’t around when Bergkamp started for us. Would’ve well and truly jumped on the non flying Dutchmen headlines

LoveSausage

TR7,

You really think there would be less spotlight on a 65M signing on massive wages riding the bench?

The only way to remove the spotlight from him is to get some performances out of him.

Habesha Gooner

Asking for Havertz to be sold now is ridiculous. I don’t rate him high either but he hasn’t even played 10 games for us. My time of judgment of a player is between a season and a season and half. If a player hasn’t shown enough by then, you cut your losses. Not now after 6 or 7 games though.

WengerEagle

Un

You’re projecting now with the talk of hard-ons, flattered and all that but barking up the wrong tree here.

If you keep slating Martinelli and calling him a head-down pace merchant then expect some pushback given it’s a load of nonsense. He is nothing like Theo who was an incredibly limited player that could only run and produce an end ball.

You are so wrong on this kid it is comical. And you way overestimate the ability of some of our other players, like Trossard.

WengerEagle

Martinelli a 21 year-old put up 20 G/A in the league last season which is more than Walcott managed in every season of his entire career save for one (12/13) where he was heavily indulged after the sale of RVP.

And he still doesn’t get full respect on here the way Saka does, very strange. I’d argue that Martinelli outperformed Saka in the bigger matches last season too.

jwl

David Raya (GK), William Saliba, Ben White, Gabriel Magalhães, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard (C), Kai Havertz, Declan Rice, Gabriel Jesus, Eddie Nketiah.

WengerEagle

Fuck me, Arteta really is rigid with his rotations eh?

A hobbled Saka and Eddie after being a non-entity last week.

GD4

Watkins with a hat trick
Game over.
4-1

raptora

Our best lineup other than Partey and Martinelli. We’re going all guns blazing! I hope nobody aggravates their injuries.

Habesha Gooner

Nelson deserved a start over Eddie. Oh well. They must all have been fit.

Watkins hattrick. Game over we can move up the table with Brighton losing and Liverpool playing spurs.

TR7

WE

Saka gets more respect because he has a more rounded and sustainable game. Besides he is a smart player, makes right decisions most of the time.

LoveSausage

WE,

I think the reason people don’t rate GM like Saka is that Martinelli’s floor is still a bit lower. When he has a poor game he plays with his head down and runs into dead ends. When Saka has a bad game, he looks disinterested but then manages to finish the game with a goal or an assist anyway.

I expect GM to hit world class levels this season but we need to make the left 8 position work for that to happen. Right now it’s too easy to double up on him because there’s no threat behind.

Matt

Muppetman

You’re living up to your moniker there comparing Havertz with Bergkamp!!

Un

Lol at the brainiacs mugging off Watkins this week.

WengerEagle

TR7

Martinelli is very intelligent as well and extremely influential. Stylistically him and Saka are very different but he offers qualities that Saka isn’t amazing at himself like 1 vs 1 threat and ability to go on the outside or cut inside.

Matt

Saka should really not be starting this game. Not taking Bournemouth for granted but we should have enough to beat them without risking Saka with city up next

Samesong

Un

I did say I like Ferguson lol did you not see I was baiting Pierre

WengerEagle

LS

Saka takes pens which helps his G/A and I’d argue he has had some horrific games akin to any of Marti’s bad ones, like down the stretch last season.

They have only both turned 22 so the consistency is not yet what it can be and the exciting thing is that we are still realistically talking about being 4-5 years away from their prime years which is a scary thought for the rest of the league.

Muppetman

Matt only comparing start of their Arsenal careers 🙂

Markymark

Watkins has evidently heard of Edu’s supposed approach to Villa hierarchy

TR7

Nketiah is getting a lot of opportunities, he needs to make them count.

WengerEagle

I’ll have to take people’s word for it but I struggle to believe that Bergkamp showed remotely as little as Havertz has so far to start his Arsenal career.

His finishing/shooting in particular has been meme-worthy bad.

Un

WengerEagleSeptember 30, 2023 13:54:01 Martinelli a 21 year-old put up 20 G/A in the league last season which is more than Walcott managed in every season of his entire career save for one (12/13) where he was heavily indulged after the sale of RVP. Eagle I had this debate in the summer This didn’t true I went through all the stats Walcotts best season came in rvp’s final or penultimate season when he got a high GA offering lots of assists He also at the same age as martinelli had a very slightly superior GA with almost identical games played… Read more »

Matt

Muppetman

Honest question, did you not ever watch Havertz at Chelsea? What we are seeing from him is what he has done for the last 3 seasons which is be massively underwhelming.

People clinging on thinking we are going to get the Dortmund Havertz, tell me why??

local

Saliba needs to closely mark Sola

GD4

Bergkamp was coming from a foreign league.
We’ve had three years of evaluating Havertz and that’s why
there’s so much outrage at the decision to sign him.
I don’t blame him. He didn’t ask Arteta to make the move

local

Saliba needs to closely mark Solanke, Zinch needs to keep an eye on Tavernier.

Anything less than 3 points would be disappointing.

Dissenter

Must be very difficult being a rotational player in Arteta’s teams
The starter will pretty much have to be shite on form like Havertz or as crocked as Partey/Timber to get dropped.

LoveSausage

WE, IMO, some of that inconsistency is also down to our fairly rigid/predictable tactics. Teams know we attack mainly through our wide forwards and they double down on Saka. But I see your point. For me, the next step in Saka’s development should be to show that he can be a real leader this season and not “just” our best player. I don’t want to read too much into his behavior in the NLD but I really didn’t like his goal celebration bantz with his mate Maddison. I’m sure it’s really great to be loved by everyone incl spuds fans… Read more »

Un

Prime Theo was just great to watch.
It was just a pity he was mucked around so much by Wenger.

Un

Eagle Saka gets credit because he scores big goals in big moments in big games He torments defences and has far more to his game than martinelli. He can go left or right. Short game or in space. Long distance shooting. Crossing. Passing. His football brain is on another level to martinelli. Martinelli is used as de facto 9 Jesus makes way and he runs in He’s not really tasked with building olay because he’s not that great with the ball outside of the box He’s a low touch player who looks for the killer finish Saka does everything martinelli… Read more »

Whatever you say about Eddie, you can’t say he hasn’t been given a chance. He has had more minutes than ESR and Nelson combined. If he isn’t producing, we will need to rethink about his spot in the team.

Eddie starting again leads me to believe that he’s got a file on Mikel. Otherwise explain how he keeps starting

Nice story about Arteta and Iraola.
Both used to be youth teammates 30 years ago.

jwl

Feel sad thinking about this match, how happy we were all six months ago when nelson scored in 97th min and how horribly wrong it went couple of weeks later. What a roller coaster last season was, the highs/lows, will never forget it.

Sold ferguson for watkins last night and I’m feeling very clever indeed this morning.

LoveSausage

Villa are cooking.

GD4

Same song?
I didn’t mention Billings?

Un

Graham
Agree
Think he would have been electric in a 442 alongside an rvp or bergkamp or even a big gig like adebayor or Giroud
He was never built as a wide forward and all credit to him for offering the goals and assists he did from a position he was never that comfortable in
I always was disappointed with wenger for how he treated Theo
Just when he was hitting form as our no9 and we were beating big teams and scoring lots of goals, wenger dropped him
Don’t understand it

GD4

5-1.
Villa

Habesha Gooner

5 – 1
Brighton smashed. Really good shape on that goal from Ramsey.

Un

People clinging on thinking we are going to get the Dortmund Havertz, tell me why??

Matt
Erm
I’d have a little think about that comment if I were you

Goobergooner

Alright, lineup is damn strong considering the injury worries leading up to the game. Hopefully we can put them to bed early on and get some more game time for the squad.

Emery absolutely spanking de zerbi haha

Pierre

Watkins is what I would call a head down merchant، I’m not sure we have room for 2 in the team..

Martinelli has shown that playing with your head up is not the be all and end all to succeeding as a footballer.
On the other side of the coin، Havertz is a player who plays with his head up but I’d choose Martinelli all day long…….no contest.

salparadisenyc

Shocker Mikel has gone full strength, we didn’t learn last season when it all fizzled out from injury and here we are doing the same thing. Why risk Rice, Saliba and Saka with marginal fitness with City on the horizon?

Mikel needs to gain trust and rotate.

Marko

WE TR7 has an ongoing issue with Martinelli cause he perceives him as keeping ESR out of the team and holding him back. As for him and Saka we should be grateful for them both. Absolutely huge talents in European football who a lot of big teams would snatch at the opportunity to buy. But yeah Saka gets a far bigger leash English boy and all that

TheLegendaryDB10

AFC Forever I agree that teams should have a say on how long a player should play, in particular for meaningless games such as friendlies or qualifiers. Having something like 60 mins tops for First team selected players and no more than 30 mins for substitutes would be a good start. The only time players can play full games would be obviously during the actual tournament where players can play as long as needed. The bigger problem is that national federations are greedy (nothing new in football there) and want to earn more money and FIFA has obliged by increasing… Read more »

Aaron

Let’s get at this! If Saliba has a back knock and Saka’s achilles is flaring and they get injured, then the entire medical staff should get their walking papers on the spot. One, for getting it wrong, and two, for not having the courage to tell Mikel, play them and they get a long term injury than I am out. Nelson needs a start, Eddie needs to score, TODAY, and camparing Berkamp to Kia, people need to put down the pipe, seriously. Dennis’s first touch, close control and ability to dribble and shoot with accuracy are worlds above anything Kai… Read more »

Lol Brighton really let themselves go this afternoon.

Dissenter

Also Eddie has to be goddam tired
He chased shadows against spurs, did lots of running against Brentford and now the managers started him again.

If Arteta didn’t have options then fine but surely Eddie needs a break from this game just to keep him fresh.

Goona

Brighton battered….COYG!

Marko

Eddie has made the difference in 2 out of the 3 games away from home.

I refuse to get into another Eddie Nketiah debate especially given how abject he’s obviously been recently. In a perfect world he’s playing week in week out in the championship and not on a 100,000 a week at Arsenal while they fuck around until they finally sign a proper striker.

He’s fucking shit

Dissenter

What a shit manager

Un

Marko

He doesn’t build play. He’s low touch, low assist. He’s all about the finishing touch
Personally I don’t think Arteta gets the best out of him. He could be a 25 goal a season player but our set up kills his pace and style in my opinion
