IVAN THE JANUARY GREAT

by .

Well hello there my dears – are you over the Spurs result?

I am. Kind of. Am I really? Maybe not.

I’m putting my Perspective FC glasses on and focused on Spurs fans prancing around like they just nipped us to the title after a fairly standard derby day draw. The levels are not the same.

We also have to be better about the catastrophization after every result. Two weeks ago Eddie was keeping Jesus out the side – now he’s not good enough for League 2. If you were buckled in for the season expecting us to win every single game, you’ll be having a thoroughly miserable time. If you think it’s easy catching City, then again, you’ll be disappointed because they are still really f*cking good.

There are some jobs that need to be done over the next three months.

1.New players need to settle

The start to the season has felt unsettled because we’re moving to a new way of playing – Arteta wants to be formationally fluid and he wants to be able to rotate players in and out without missing a beat.

We are missing beats.

You only get better by practicing in a live environment and unfortunately, the instant success we want on the pitch isn’t a reality in football.

Pointing at Pep and what they’re doing at City is pointing at perfection – Arsenal is working towards the level they’re at, but we’re not there yet, and it is unrealistic to think we’re closing the gap this season.

Get angry at that notion, bang the table, but no one else in the league has a better idea at the moment. Even peak-Klopp only managed to wrestle one EPL trophy from Pep. You could ask for a new manager – but the chances someone else could take this group to a higher level are slim and there are plenty of Premier League examples of the-big-thing getting the move then quickly moving to the fraud bin of Premier League football. Even proven winners have to take jobs in other countries.

Our strategy is to improve as fast as we can and wait for the City blip – because it will come.

2.Chance creation

We’re not creating chances like we were last season and that needs to improve. Part of that can be attributed to the newness of the squad. We have a lot of new players trying to find their feet in key positions.

We’re settling a new number 6

We’re settling a new keeper

We’re settling a new left-sided 8

We’ve only just reintroduced our starting 9

I don’t doubt the ability of any of the players – so in the medium term we’ll be fine. We just have to give them time to work each other out.

3.Cut out the dumb

We have been doing dumb quite a bit this season. Our defending as a team is really good in general. But each mistake we make seems to get pounced on. There’s been no forgiveness in the system. Individual errors are running RIFE at Arsenal, particularly at home. We have to focus, find out if North London Forever or Win the dog need to go, then get to grips with clean sheets once again.

Individual errors are easier to solve than systemic problems with tactics (Emery’s system for example was never going to work), we’ll get on top if this problem soon.

4.Manage Player Fitness Better

We’ve been struggling with injuries since preseason. Arteta is a beast in training, he doesn’t believe in pain, and we’re suffering with leggy performances and soft tissue injuries. These issues usually kill us in the backend of the season, they’re hurting us at the start this season. If we want to be competitive, players have to be rotated, and they have to have their bodies respected.

Again, we are overflowing the problems because of the Spurs result. Most of these problems will get solved when the players learn to play with each other. But at least we’re clear-ish why they’re happening.

We have Brentford tomorrow – the only player worth talking about right now is Ivan Toney. The heat on his signature is ramping up because he’ll likely be leaving Brentford in January.

This is our phase 5 striker moment… but it won’t cost us Haaland money.

Ivan Toney has had a bad year, he was caught gambling, he did wrong. We have to assume the time out is being used to get him corrected on gambling.

The next thing we have to hope is that he can come back to the form he left.

14 non-penalty goals put him 8th in the league last season. Everyone else above him played for a Big 6 club. 14 non-penalty goals is unreal for a team like Brentford. Add to that the 6 penalties he scored, because, you know, all goals count.

The player has what we lack – a bit of nasty in our forward line. He’s world-class in the press, he’s the only player I’ve seen occupy William Saliba, and he’s brilliant in front of goal. Not the mention how sophisticated his link play is when he’s playing as a loan striker.

Toney offers us something we don’t have in the final third from an aerial perspective as well – he might be sub 6 ft, but he’s one of the best players in the air. The thinking, I would assume, is in a system with players who can hit a pin from 60 yards, his aerial strength could be very, very useful.

Arsenal will have to compete for him against Chelsea – the only worry there is them jacking the price. Todd B won’t accept spending at least 450% more on a player than he should which could see the deal get pushed up like it did for Declan Rice.

I expect £60m will do the job – if we get him for that, we’ll have got a very fair deal for a player that could bang.

So what do we need to hope for? Brentford having a good run for the next 3 months. We have to see their forwards do well, we need to see them wracking up points, and we have to hope they don’t have any bad injuries. If all that comes together, I think we’ll be in for his signature.

Right – I’ll be back with more League Cup chat tomorrow. Get on our Brentford Before The Whistle right NOW. x

Almost no chance of tickets being available in the away end of a CL game, so yeah we agree. Didn’t know it was platinum.

WEagle would have more luck joining the Sevilla membership and sitting with the home supporters, and even then not very likely given it’s CL.

But in general, joining Red and looking on ticket exchange is the cheapest legit way to get tickets for non-season ticket holders.

Pierre That’s one way of looking at it Or you could say that -our strikers aren’t making the right runs and finding space -That the way big chances are recorded is incorrect as I think we’ve missed a fist few more big chances than 7 I could count them out Havertz has missed about 3-4 on his own Eddie a couple Neslon Saka Odegaard Jesus have all missed them the way we play creates a system where goals come from sources that don’t register as big chances And that our supporting players are actually the main goal scorers in this… Read more »

Raulishuss and Un

Maybe you both should make a complaint as to how big chances are compiled، I don’t.make up the figures they are there in black and white ..

Maybe you think that there is a discrimination against our creative players to make them look worse than they really are when it comes to creating clear cut chances for our strikers

To be honest I think some of you have a problem with the fact that I have been highlighting our lack of creativity and the stats actually confirm what I’ve been saying.

TR7

Our team will become more creative once ESR takes charge as no 10 in place of Odegaard. Odegaard a good carrier of the ball but his game is slow and predictable outside of odd fancy flicks. We need our CAM to play through the middle and between the lines. Odegaard drifts wide and slides in very predictable through balls.

TR7

Odegaard should play as no 8, not as a CAM. He keeps the ball well and can pass long and short.

WengerEagle

I mean it can be true that you are both right/wrong Pierre. You are correct in saying that creatively, Ode hasn’t at all started the season well. You’re wrong though that he doesn’t have it in him to be a quality creator of chances. He was averaging more than 2 key passes a game last season and put up 7 PL assists which is a healthy return considering he banged in 15 PL goals along with that. He’s not an Ozil type creator, only an idiot would dispute this. But Ozil could never even dream of Ode’s goal return last… Read more »

Ask wicked willy as he must have a few million quid spare by the sounds of it.

Freddie Ljungberg

Ode is already playing as an 8. Do people still don’t understand our system after all this time?

Ode doesn’t need replacing, we need someone in the OTHER 8 position to contribute creatively as well, preferably a little bit more centrally. Would help if it’s someone that can travel with the ball and go past a player or 2, we’re too predictable right now and not creating enough.

ESR would seem to be the only one in the squad fitting the bill but Arteta doesn’t seem to think that so it is what it is.

WengerEagle

Fabregas in 2009/10 was just a freak because he was literally if you mixed prime Ozil creatively with Odegaard’s goalscoring ability last season.

15 goals and 15 assists, 30 G/A in just 27 apps is still one of the greatest PL season’s ever put up by an individual.

local

I still feel ESR, Reiss, Fabio and Tross are only good as second half subs.

Fabio and Tross lack strength to keep the ball under pressure or win the ball by pressing their markers.

ESR and Reiss don’t do enough pressing and against Brentford, ESR was jogging instead of running most of the time which is criminal.

Are you actually being serious? You think all Odegaard does is fancy flicks? I have no idea what some people on here watch, it’s certainly a different game. To disrespect Odegaard for what he contributes to this team and to not be aware of the important role he plays is truly astonishing.

WengerEagle

I love ESR more than most but imo he needs to trim some of that fat off of him. He doesn’t look as streamlined as he could be to me, carrying a little timber and the margins are razor-thin at the elite level so it can make a huge difference.

You could get away with that build 10-15 years ago but not in the modern game where these guys are all athletic freaks of nature.

TR7

AFC First of all you need to be very cautious while using words such as hate, toxicity, disrespect, vitriol etc. Critisism or having a different take on players from what you have is neither hate nor toxicity. And I am not disrespecting Odegaard. We need his calmness and control on the ball in our midfield and he is perhaps the safest and assured ball carrier in our team. But creative he is not. Pierre There is something to what you’re saying on Ode that some people seem to be missing because you hammer Ode at every available micro-opportunity due to your Ozil infatuation to this day which clouds your opinion in perceived bias. He definitely is not the second coming of KDB which has always been a terrible take imo. KDB is more Cesc-like in that he’s a creative juggernaut and in possession, the entire game funnels through him, he’s like a tractor-beam for the ball. At this stage we should just sell Eddie. I mean come on, his all-round game is incredibly limited and that would be forgivable perhaps if he were ruthless in front of goal but he’s not.

Tr7 fully agree there regarding ode as 8.

Goobergooner

The fact we are playing 2 attacking 8s doesn’t provide the creativity it should purely down to personnel.

Goobergooner

Even ode on the left would provide more for the attack I feel.

Marko

I think Mikel needs to start thinking about what it is that he’s doing on the training pitch cause more and more players are going down. Between that and how shit he is mid game with subs rotating and running certain players into the ground a coming to Jesus moment is needed.

In saying all that he doesn’t come across as the willing to change type

WengerEagle

TR7 We have been aligned in not rating Ramsdale from the get-go and I’ve been told constantly that we were wrong even though now Arteta seemingly agrees and with that of course Pedro followed suit. I’m not even sure if Raya is the answer and I still think ditching Martinez was a mistake but it is what it is. I’m more concerned about White and Zinchenko’s loss of form if I’m honest. Nelson seems to have settled and seems to be able to do the hard graft too. Took his goal well. Should have buried that ball from Havertz though.

Afc Yes I watched the whole game, as I always do, eventhough it started at 1.45pm my time. Why is that the superfan go to? As I said, being good in possession is only a part of being a single pivot. Not giving the ball away repeatedly under the slightest pressure is kind of important in that position. He’s ok in a double pivot to see out games or against teams happy to sit back with no pace down the middle but other than that he needs to stay on the bench. Too bad we broke Partey playing him at… Read more »

Meh.

Repeating the same fuckup that cost us 2 points against Spurs a couple of days earlier cancels out any good he did in my book. Lucky we didn’t get punished that time but how can he be that stupid? He’s supposed to be the experienced, calm head ffs. Unacceptable imo.

Are you a Midwest Gun as well?

Jorginho did well for me considering he was holding it down all on his own, weirdly was better when Brentford we’re all over us than early on. That near give away in our box had many screaming i’d imagine.

I’m with you, Partey at RB should be punishable by something severe.

Oops mixed up my pm and am, that’s what happens when you’re used to military time.

Nah, I’m on the other side of the world, SE Asia.
All midweek games are a pain in the ass, 1.45-2.45am starting time.

Grow up mate, leave the silly name-calling to the playground.

Superfan?

Don’t see how that is any worse than calling people ingrates, clowns, stupid, highlight merchants etc etc but sure…
We all know where you were going with that. If someone doesn’t agree with you they obviously have only watched highlights or they know nothing about the game bla bla bla. Bore off.

Excellent i’m going to envision something saucy like Hanoi or Phuket City, stuff of dreams.
Have to say high level of support for Premier league in that part of world, Hong Kong feels like the N5 on match days.

Enough excuses……we aren’t creating as many chances this summer because Xhaka was massive last year. After years of being a defensive midfielder he was encouraged to play the role he fills on the Swiss team. He is also a leader…Xhaka is the one who calmed things on the pitch and helped refocus the team with team talks. He is missed more than many Xhaka-haters can admit. Havertz needs to be more direct with his passing.

You’re always the same on here. Either pissing on something or making stupid statements and hurling insults. You epitomise toxic.

As for Arteta breaking Partey by playing him RB, that did make me laugh. How did we break him in 20/21 and 21/22 when he missed a third of each of those seasons? I guess we should just put him in goal eh?

Not quite as saucy as Phuket but pretty close.
Been here 15 years and see a decent amount of Arsenal shirts about, probably 3rd to Man U and Pool I’d say.

Kiwior is one who is banging on the door for more playing time.. I’d like to see him come on as a defensive sub for Zinny rather than Tomiyasu. Tomiyasu can sub for White. White and Saka are criminally overplayed by Arteta. Their levels drop because they aren’t as fresh as they could be.

Some might call you and your buddy Nigel toxic as well even though you’re both firmly lodged up Artetas backside, has nothing to do with how positive you are about every single aspect of the club.

The policing and condescension gets boring real fast, you know we can read your posts right? Stop playing the victim every time you get called out on something.

“One day someone will explain the reason for the toxicity in this comment section and the hate for some of our players”

That would take me ten seconds :-).

Mikel Arteta on team news:

That’s a horribly long injury list. I know City next week is massive, but we also really need three points this weekend. Hope one or two make a last minute recovery.

I am hoping that Rice takes over that role, but he does look quite the emotional player too.

I think you are right that we are missing him in some way.

Xhaka was exceptional and an exemplary player as well last season. Not only did he play fantastically well, he didn’t have a single brain fart nor a red card.

His last season was quite the turnaround and really phenomenal considering the shit that we flung at him over that past few seasons (which he really didn’t care about).

Shows that he really was made of Granit!!

Good comments. I think Xhaka proved what a strong character he was. Brave. You need people like that. He is probably the best example of someone who was literally caned and abused by fans but completely won them over.
