ARSENAL BATTER PSV

by .

Arsenal welcomed themselves back into the Champions League with a backside blistering spanking of PSV. Their biggest in Champions League history. The performance was… very good.

The biggest shocker in the starting line-up was seeing David Raya on the teamsheet again. A lot of Ramsdalians collapsed on pub floors up and down the country knowing full well they’d been in my mentions and DMs telling me Raya was a passing phase. They’d been hoofing copium after he was dropped last week, knowing full well Rambo would at least get cup duties – wrong. Occam’s razor sliced their narrative with brutal precision – the simplest answer for Aaron not being in the team was always this: Arteta rates Raya over him. Though I have to say, I thought he’d give Rambo a soft landing, but it wasn’t to be.

We saw Kai back in the side, Eddie dropped out for Jesus, Trossard kept his place, and everything else was pretty strong.

Arsenal dominated from minute one until the end. We sliced PSV to pieces with beautiful build-up play that felt like choreographed chaos. The Dutch team weren’t equipped technically to deal with our talent on the ball and they couldn’t match our power.

I don’t want to explain each goal – but key facts:

Saka scored a goal and got an assist.

Trossard had another sublime finish, rekindling his pre-season form

Gabi Jesus celebrated his return to the starting 11 with another great goal

Martin Odegaard showed last season’s taste for long-range efforts was no fluke

There were lots of great individual performances. I know it’s not fashionable to say it, but Kai Havertz had a really strong game. His finishing right now absolutely stinks – it’s like watching Kaba Diawara out there – but his all-round game is getting sharper by the match and you can see the green shoots of a monster beanstalk in the making. The doutbers should get the jabs in the now, because I think claims that he’s going to be a huge waste of money will look very dated, very soon. He was good in midfield and offered a lot as a striker later in the game. Once that first big goal comes at Spurs, he’ll be up and running.

Declan Rice is just a total beast of a man. He showed his fangs last night, but also showcased his outrageous talents by pinning the midfield on his own like he’d been with us for 10 years. He has so much personality on the pitch. His range of passing and the accuracy is so sharp and I love the way he has a 6th sense for sniffing out danger. He was everywhere.

David Raya didn’t have a lot to do – but everyone in The AOP comments on Youtube said the same thing: he was great. He’s our new number one. He has an icey calmness about him the best keepers have. Some keepers want to be noticed – others don’t. Raya wants to be the Spanish iceman. He brings tranquilo to every moment, collecting crosses with no drama, picking out 70-yard passes in his stride, and making neat work of the basics. The eye-test shows you all you need to know about why Ramsdale is where he is at the moment. Even the little tactical talk Arteta gave him after the first goal told a story. What we really haven’t seen yet is a BIG game. No doubt he starts against Spurs and there will be more to deal with that he’s had in his first two games. Two clean sheets though – not bad.

Benny Blanco put in a dogged performance. He covered a lot of ground and did a lot of dirty work. He’s in an interesting space, because part of you think he might have been sitting next to Rambo right now if Timber had stayed fit… but part of you also wonders if that might have been Zinchenko? Whatever the future state is – it’s hard to imagine a world without Benny Blanco in our starting 11. He has so much character and offers 110 percenters every game.

I also want to just say that I think William Saliba is going to end this season with no doubt that he’s the best centre-back in the world. The man has too much sauce. Did you see some of the showboating today? Disgusting.

Hard to say we learned too much today – we played a weak European side and battered them at home. No one is engraing the Champions League trophy with your name after that. What you can say is we’re taking it seriously, every player wants to step up, and other clubs will be taking notice.

Final point – the crowd was great. Particularly with Havertz after a few of his misses. Arsenal are better when the crowd is with them. They’ll be needed this Sunday for the Spurs game. I can’t wait.

Ok, hit up the latest podcast. x

My sense is that Odegaard is going to be better than KDB, and I’m absolutely sure Saka will be better than Salah. It wouldn’t surprise me if Martinelli ends up superior to Mane, Rice will be better than PV4 and Saliba will be the greatest CB English football has ever seen. What a team we are building!

Brilliant performance last night from the lads

PSV are not a poor team we just made them look so, they will qualify from the group

What a cracking game.
Just re watching highlights, the Jesus goal celebration is hilarious with saka sliding up to Jesus. Absolutely love how much it means to them.

Excellent game play and brilliant to see ESR coming onto the pitch. The big up for Kai is good to see, just wonder whether it’ll be a point of divide if we have Kai linking up well and getting 7/10’s but not scoring and a now departed ESR linking up play at pace and then adding Lampard like strikes from the edge of the box. Let’s hope I don’t get that disappointment in my life.

I’m waiting for Pierre to provide more helpful advice on what Wenger would have done…… might have to wait a bit longer I suppose

As I posted last night I see the logic of replacing Ramsdale with Raya. The defence looks better and more relaxed when he is playing and we secured our second consecutive clean sheet. The one major concern that I have at the moment is that our defensive resources in absence of Timber look quite light. We do have cover on left side of defence with Kiwior and Tomiyasu. However, we have limited cover on the right side should either White or Saliba get injured. I would be concerned to bring in Cedric to the team. Clearly the long term injury… Read more »

Onana’s apology after the game was very bizarre
Yes his howler was hilarious but having a goalie going up to the press to say “we should have won the game if not for my mistake’s is very amateurish.
He cares too much about what people think about him, top athletes don’t go to the press crying about a mistake they made.

Aasim

Would have liked to see ESR come in at half time. Otherwise, flawless. Kai was good yesterday. You can see shades of the vision he has and his first touch. But really, for a lad whose record was so so good at Leverkusen, I don’t get why he has confidence issues.

Great result, great game. It was probably Havertz best game in an Arsenal shirt so far, but it is a little embarrassing for Arteta to single him out publicly. What must the others players be thinking who had 8 or 9’s and Arteta is praising Havertz for having a 6 (at best).

The message is resoundingly clear, Havertz is Arteta’s per project and he is getting dropped for nobody. I expect many more 6 performances to come.

“The biggest shocker in the starting line-up was seeing David Raya on the teamsheet again.’ Not for me. This is my first and only Raya\Ramsdale comment but having seen their side by side stats since the 2022/23 season’s start, according to which Raya blows Ramsdale away in every aspect of the game, I had no doubt he would start in the CL. Matt, not embarrassing to highlight a good performance. Havertz played well last night, it’s not been a great start. It’s called being encouraging.

A manager praising a player short on confidence who cost the club 65m isn’t exactly new or outrages.

Highlighting a 6 performance over the like of Odegaard, Trossard and Saliba??

Havertz did OK, he really did nothing more than that. Even his most ardent fans must admit that. Encourage him in private sure, save the public plaudits for when the attacking midfielder actually scores or even delivers a telling attacking contribution.

Paulie

I’m sorry for Ramsdale but bringing Raya in is brilliant management by Arteta. The whole team looks more composed in those two games he’d played so far. This is now an elite club again and Raya is simply a better keeper than Ramsdale, Arteta bought him as number one and now he’s there to stay. Sorry Aaron but theres no way back

I just want to say that it was such a great feeling to see us back in the CL and start off with such a good thumping start.

Lovely post Pedro!!

He has so much personality on the pitch. Pedro re Rice.

His bust up with de Jong after he inadvertently stepped on his foot was interesting to watch.

There was some PV4 vibes in there. Not taking any shit at all from de Jong but then knowing how to make up and shake hands.

I’ll say it again: a Captain in the making, there is no doubt here.

It is crazy how many top drawer players we have in our squad now – Rice, Saka, Odegaard, Saliba, Trossard, Marti, Jesus and so many more. On the whole, Arteta has built an excellent squad.

Raya is just so good and calm. And those saying giving Ramsdale a new contract knowing this was going to happen was a mistake. Check the value being placed on Ramsdale in all the reports linking him with a move away – £60m!

Any need to say anything more?

That was a masterclass performance at a wet and very noisy Emirates stadium. The team selection was spot on against a good side that haven’t lost for 26 games. Total tactical control. Rice reads the game like only the best players do, he’s just so good. Odegaard is technically world class, he is the engine in our team. always available & using his vision and exquisite touch to play through the lines. Out of possession he’s everywhere, we mugged Real Madrid, £35m!!!! Then there is Jesus. We are a different team when he plays. He affects the entire team, makes… Read more »

I would appreciate it if those people who say Havertz had a strong game and played well, would explain what he did that was strong and what it was about his play that was so good? I ask because he didn’t stink the place out, but for me he didn’t really do anything of note. I feel like the fan base is trying to lift Kai’s spirits. He wasn’t one of our best players by any stretch. If we have to be painfully honest, he had the worst game out of our attacking players.

Ode, Tross, Saka, Jesus all did much better than him and we can probably add Reiss and Fabio to the bunch.

Obviously it’s early days for him. I applaud his effort. Small steps I guess.

Great team performance yesterday, the Emirates was soaking but rocking.

I thought that Havertz had a decent game vs Man City at Wembley and again yesterday, oddly enough the two games I’ve actually seen live this season – could be we’re all missing aspects of his game when we’re viewing it on TV..?

Rice was immense, Saliba was a Roller again, TrueType astonishing footwork under pressure from that boy and Raya was ok.

Two tough away games now in CL but I reckon we can get 4 points from them.

‘I feel like the fan base is trying to lift Kai’s spirits’

Rapt: isn’t that what the fans did when Saliba cocked up when we conceded last season as well?

I think it’s a definite positive that the fans that attend the games actually behave like ‘supporters’ and help the individual players and team, in general the vibe I got at the ground was supportive for Kai.

TR7

Looks like Harvertz has been instructed to play the Fellaini role by Arteta – winning long balls from Raya in midfield, making deep runs into the box, winning aerial duels, pressing high, set pieces etc.

If we expect him to be a baller then I think we will be left disappointed. Of course he is more polished than Fellaini and may show glimpses of good touch and class sometimes but he is not going to be much of a on the ball player.

Aasim

I think Ramsdales wtf moment this season was Fulham’s goal.
The lad lost his footing and his awareness of where the goal was. Given the shot was so weak, it should NEVER have been a goal. The other thing, and this probably isn’t a fault of his, is his natural expression is a bit nervous. Doesn’t extrude confidence, unless he’s having a blinder of a game.

X haka

Raya is better than I originally thought. More composed, bigger. We kept a clean sheet at home, which we rarely do with Ramsdale. As we are seeing with Onana at Manchester United, inept keepers like him and Ramsdale undermine the team very quickly. Arteta does deserve credit for getting Raya in the team quickly, but he should have never bought Ramsdale in the first place for £30 million. Like Havertz at £65 million. £100 million wasted and could and should have been invested elsewhere. What the fuck does he actually do in the game? Dung. Let’s hope Mick has him… Read more »

englandsbest

Great game, great display.

Difficult to assess Spurs approach. Will they be able to play possession football? Or will they be forced to defend, wait to pounce on a loose pass in midfield?

Redheart

@Tom Raya didn’t blow Ramsdale away in every aspect of the game. Rams had more clean sheets than him. State facts here please

Carts

PSV never stood a chance. It was such a dominant performance from us. Puts us in good stead for Spurs this weekend.

One thing I would like to point out is, might be splitting hairs, here, I think Arteta needs to be more pragmatic with subs when we’ve wrapped games up.

Dragging Trossard after an hour was odd, especially if he doesn’t start against Spurs.

But the likes of Saka and Rice don’t need to be rinsed when we’re 3 up with 25mins to go at home to an inferior team

Dolomite

On Havertz

The ability to bring others into play and create attacking phases is one most football fans fail to appreciate – but this is exactly what Arteta sees in Kai Havertz.

Think of his development as a two phase project, firstly mastering the links with the players around him and secondly developing the ability to finish in a variety of modes – heading shooting and one v ones then you will realise how cheap £65M will be for such a player.

Emiratesstroller

Bob N16

The major change provided by Raya playing in goal is the growing confidence by the rest of team and in particular the defence. He provides “calm and competence”

Havertz played much better in second half. Smith-Rowe needs more game time if he is to be a useful
addition to our squad.

We need still a right wing to understudy Saka.

Belfast Gooner

When Trossard was pulled my first thought was it meant he would be starting against Spuds. It was great to see the subs were able to keep up pressure around the PSV box. And a special mention for ESR. I’ve missed that boy and seeing him back on the pitch and fully committed was brilliant.

Dissenter

Yesterday, Thierry Henry said Arteta brought in Ramsdale to make a top 4 push
He then realized Ramsdale wasn’t good enough to win us a league title and brought in Raya to get us to the very top.

Keepers don’t get rotated or rested, they get dropped.

Rich

Havertz was a solid 7/10 last night, as he was at Wembley against City, and against Forest + Palace. He had a stinker at home to Fulham, and was just below average against United. Some decent stuff here last night: https://x.com/wator_ski/status/1704784458430161356?s=61I The more I’ve seen of him though, the more I’ve warmed to him, stylistically he’s the antithesis of how some had profiled him. He’s clearly lacking confidence, and the main concern is that when Xhaka + Ødegaard went through difficult moments, they still had the courage to demand the ball and play. Whereas Havertz seems to lack that personality… Read more »

One of the most stupidest decisions ever?

Belfast Gooner

@ Dolomite. When I watch him, most of Havertz’s passes are sideways or backwards. A couple of times he tried to give and go, but ran into an offside position so Tross and then Nelson were forced to look elsewhere as Havertz wasn’t an option. I just think what he does and how he does it isn’t what I would expect from one of the most expensive signings in the club’s history, and isn’t distinguishable from players in a similar role, such as Pereira at Fulham and Janelt at Brentford. He doesn’t seem to have added anything to what we… Read more »

And having said all that, I do hope it gets worked out and he can replicate what he did in Germany. I’m desperate for him to be a raging success. The club needs every player to crush it this season. Part of my concern is that he hasn’t clicked in the Premier League in three years, and if the problem is he isn’t suited to the football played here.

Pierre

There is hope for Havertz even though he has a poor shooting technique، when he first arrived Odegaard’s technique was suspect when striking a moving ball but I have to say that he now strikes through the ball with a purpose ، whereas Havertz is like a golfer who decelerates when chipping or putting meaning their is no speed in the shot. Havertz needs to put his foot through the ball the way Odegaardnow does، maybe it’s a confidence thing and is something that Arteta and the coaches need to work on.. Personally، as i said before I think Havert… Read more »

Crying about Emi Martinez when he has been nothing more than decent for Villa is ridiculous.

I agree the rotating door of endless keepers isn’t great. But apart from Leno going for a pittance, we haven’t been damaged. And if Ramsdale doesn’t win his place back while Raya becomes an integral part of the team and eventually wants to leave, we will sell Ramsdale and get our money back.

Habesha Gooner

I am a Ramsdale fan and to bring him in against spurs would be stupid. He would already be feeling a bit nervy because his place is a contention now. And that isn’t a risk we should take in a big game like that. Put in Raya, if Ramsdale wins his spot back, then so be it. If not he should play second fiddle till he does or otherwise.

Dolomite

@Belfast good points
But the thing about Havertz is he can receive aerial and through passes while maintaining possession, something only Jesus is capable of when being tightly marked

This offers us an alternative to our choreographed approach while pulling blocks out of shape, something that will become more noticeable once Havertz develops automatic connections with Saka, Odegaard, Martinelli et al

Belfast Gooner

I think you could be right Pierre. But that then begs the question, why buy a conversion project instead of going for someone who is experienced and capable in that role? Anyway, I’ve got to agree with the first observations about Raya. He looks so composed. One area where he seems to be better than Ramsdale is his pass selection. He seems to make enough time for himself to pick a less risky, more effective pass when the ball comes back to his feet. And he looks very assured taking the ball in the air. It’s reassuring for the defenders.… Read more »

The only thing that sounds fishy and unfair is Raya being a buddy with the GK coach and the Spanish connection between the two of them and Arteta.

But if he keeps playing well, solid and trustworthy, then there would be nothing fishy about the situation at all.

Tbh, I thought Raya is only a slightly better keeper than Rams, but maybe it’s not slightly after all. Remains to be seen.

X haka

As we are seeing with Onana, someone nervous and pretty inept at the basics in goal is a recipe for disaster.

Unsettles the defence something chronic.
No way Ramsdale comes back now,
We have our goalkeeper sorted, finally.

Savage

Was trying to understand why are goal celebrations have been pretty flat recently. Simples… no Xhaka. Am I the only one who misses him?

Rich

Havertz isn’t a central midfielder, he’s a low touch forward, if he did play deeper, then stylistically he’d likely be comparable to Willock. Havertz is a hard running forward, he stretches the opposition backline, which gives the rest of the team space to manoeuvre into. Our field tilt is the highest in the division this season, if we commit more players to attack, then the opposition has to commit more players to defend. It’s the athletic + physical profile of our players behind the ball, that dictates the level of risk we can take in terms of committing more bodies… Read more »

I remember the argument being made to keep Partey cause it’ll take Rice months to learn the different kind of football and blah blah blah meanwhile I always argued 100 million player targeted for a reason he’ll be good to go. Marko

agree the rotating door of endless keepers isn’t great.

It is actually worth pointing out that prior to signing Ramsdale originally we were linked to Raya (through Cana or otherwise) but Brentford said no so maybe he was always the one we wanted

That being said, our strongest 11 is with both Partey and Rice starting so the argument is pretty dumb.

Rice at the base of the midfield is the best course going forward. And with that in mind we’ll never know how much better we would be off if Partey was replaced by a proper 8 in the team.

Rich

Spanner That’s exactly what Havertz does. Guardiola once said “We don’t pass to move the ball, we pass to move the opposition” It’s the same with off the ball movement, players are on the ball for roughly 2 minutes out of 90, so for the other 88 minutes they’re trying to move the opposition around. Gonsterous

I am very very very happy with the rice signing. When we signed him, I thought he wasn’t very tall but after watching him play, not only is he tall and strong but he is athletic and robust. Something we have not had in the middle of the park for a long time. Lets not do a galaxy brain and suddenly play him at LB or RB.

Kai definitely appeals to the CL because European teams are much inferior to PL sides and play more openly. In the PL, he still needs to offer a lot more. I won’t be happy if he starts in the NLD. Maybe off the bench when we are leading will be good.

I had no qualms about moving on Partey. Just not the oast summer. We need two quality players every position. And once Rice was up and running it made sense. Now this coming summer we will sell Partey, Jorginho and Elneny will leave on a free and we can sign an understudy to Rice. Selling Partey the past summer made no sense footballing reasons wise. You know Partey is injured yet again right? And people saying that it was worth it. If anything I would have argued it made more sense this summer cause we have adequate back up at 6 meanwhile next summer we’ll probably be moving out a few midfielders. Not a major argument to be had it’s just that with Rice looking so comfortable at 6 and a need for a starting 8 it honestly made sense to me re Partey

I am really optimistic this year because we have with Raya and Saliba two super calm and gifted players. This stabilises our defence so much. We have not had such a strong defence for years.

Martinez going had nothing to do with Arteta and everything to do with Martinez. Arteta never said that Leno was always going to be # 1. Martinez just did not want to stay and fight for the place. Arteta has shown that he is ruthless when it comes to goal keepers. Leno was dropped in favor of Ramsdale. Now Ramsdale is dropped in favor of Raya. It’s frustrating to constantly read this constant bushtit about how better Martinez is compared to every other keeper. There is a reason why he is at Aston Villa nd Chelsky and Manure did not… Read more »

Josip: “Havertz was, by far, our worst player (his teammates were all very good to be fair)”

The only one who didn’t play up to his usual standards, I would say, was Benny Blanco who looked slower than usual.

The other 9 players on the pitch from our team + a couple of the reserves, all had a better game than Havertz.

I will not shit on him for his performance, but giving plaudits when there’s not much reason for it, is not fair either.

Have a look at Havertz’s positions in goals one and three.
Centre of the goal one yard out waiting for a tap in.
In an acre of space on the penalty spot, waiting for a cut back.
Goal 4 he anticipates Ode’s shot and makes the space for him.

A fit Partey should 100% make our best eleven, particularly in the bigger games. But his availability now needs to be seen as an excellent bonus, rather than something we bank on. There’s always risk, but we at least need to stack the odds in our favour. If you were running Partey through a risk assessment, he’d be deemed as high risk, but also high reward. Ultimately though he’d be considered too high risk, because the statistics are conclusive, it’s not when he’s on the pitch that costs us, but it’s when he’s sat in the stands that screws us.… Read more »

I agree: Ben White surprisingly had an off day yesterday. He made many mistakes and lost his PSV attacking player several times. He looked distracted. He has been very good so far this season.

Vieira is looking better and better. He’s got great technique, so he’ll deliver the goods for us.

Brilliant analysis by Havertz, Rich. I’ll take the liberty of copying some of this and using it in arguments with hysterical “experts” on social media. Brilliantly written, reminded me of the golden days of discussion on Le grove a decade back. How lucky we are if Havertz is our biggest problem today.

Still trying to get my head around this so called lack of confidence with Kai – some scenarios around leadership change and not playing in favoured positions but really? At no time do I hear of being continuously over looked ( ESR and Reiss could use this ) He’s been regularly played by the changing managers so not been unduly frozen out. Does have premiership experience and scored a very high profile goal. Grab Reuell Walters and shove him in the team against high profile opponents and it’s easier to picture an image of stress, fear , worry and needing… Read more »

If Havertz is stinking the place out in the slower paced CL, he will clearly struggle in the much faster and aggressive EPL, which we already have seen.

He has not played well since he fluked the CL for Chelsea.

Mick should copy Pep when he fucked up with the Kalvin Phillips signing.

Bench him for the season.

Not good enough for this Arsenal side.

Vieira, Smith Rowe, Jorginho, Nelson and Nketiah all far better attacking options.

How are people still convinced it was the right decision to move both Xhaka and Partey out at the same time? We have struggled to play our game till last night since the start of the season. It will click eventually. But we needed an evolution in midfield, not a revolution. Partey is still a top class player. And moving him out for someone like Lavia made 0 sense eventhough we would have had Rice. What people were proposing was a gamble on Rice (eventhough he is playing well), and a newbie when we are competing against Man City FFS.… Read more »
