BALO-GONE TO MONACO – BEST WAY TO EXIT?

by .

Word on the Tweet is Folarin Balogun will exit to Monaco. There is a verbal agreement between the French club and Arsenal and the fee being mooted is about €45M.

Is this the best fee we could get? Well clearly. It feels a bit low in a world that contains Todd B.

So why do I like it? Well, Folarin can’t hurt us in Monaco. The big fear when you let a kid leave is they come back and haunt you in important games. Samir Nasri and Adebayor spring to mind. By going to Monaco, we don’t have to see him every week, and the bonus is that if he is eventually sold by a notorious selling club we’ll get a lovely kickback that’ll make up for the lack of a Premier League fee.

My gut says that if no one in the Premier League fancied him, no one thought he was at the level to do the job for them. Strikers are at a premium always, if Palace thought he was good enough for 25 goals this season, he’d have been playing against us on Monday.

It pains me to see him go, but Eddie is better than him.

I don’t really like the narrative of ‘HE DIDN’T WANT TO FIGHT FOR HIS PLACE’ because that would assume he had a chance. Timing is everything in elite sport and I don’t think that’s on his side for an Arsenal career. Eddie is way ahead of him, Jesus is a monster, and it’s clear that if those two don’t bang we’ll move on Ivan Toney or Evan Ferguson.

Eddie has been very good this season. No one fancies him, but Arteta does. I loved this comment from him in The Telegraph.

“I always try to train like a beast at Arsenal and give my all every time whether I’m playing or not. That’s the mentality I have. I train full gas because I think if you train well most of the time it reflects in the match. That’s the way I look at football and life.”

“You have to try and turn your situation around through hard work and showing your quality. That’s the mentality I have and always grown up with. Where I grew up, feeling sorry about yourself doesn’t get you anywhere. That’s a value and motivation that’s been instilled in me from young by my family. ”

“Where I grew up, no one cares if you’re upset, it doesn’t get you where you want to be so I think through hard work and resilience, you’ll get to where you want to get to. It might not happen straight away but over time you’ll get your rewards.”

Matt Kandela delivered me the best piece of advice I’ve had in two years when I was making excuses about failing (legitimate excuses, like ‘new baby’). He said, ‘No one cares. The sooner you understand that, the sooner you can make a choice about whether you’re going to work through your excuses. Either way, no one cares about the reasons you are failing.’ Brutal, but true. Now every time I moan about something, I doubletake.

I’m like, three years older than Eddie, so it’s wild that he has that level of maturity. Good on him, let’s see a BIG season from him, and hope he gets to where he needs to be career-wise.

Kieran Tierney has exited the club, he’s going to Real Sociedad for the season. He’s moving for minutes and Champions League. I can’t lie, the idea of Keiran Tierney speaking Espanol has me excited. That taste palette of his is going to get a severe working. No more Tesco bags for that boy, it’s El Corte Inglés all the way. I’m glad he landed his move, he’s a top player, just not suited to the system.

There are only three more players that need exiting now – Cedric, Pepe, and Rob Holding. The first two feel like TERMINATION BY MUTAL CONSENT. Not sure what’s happening with Rob. He’ll make a top centre-back for someone. Not sure why his agent hasn’t exited him yet.

I don’t think Big Mo is going to go, he’s there for the culture. He has no ambition to be anything more than a squad player and everyone at the club adores him. People don’t like that, but it’s hard to knock Arteta and the culture he’s building. He’s been a monster for 2 years, if he wants to keep Mo, he’s earned the right to do that.

Right, I think that’s all we have. Jump into our weekly round-up and tell us what you think!

P.S. Remember when people were telling you Jesus was out for 8 weeks and I said, no, he’ll be on the bench for Palace. I was wrong, but he is back in full training this week and could be on the bench for Fulham.

Pedro, I know that you adore Eddie.

But I just can’t get my head around the feeling that on another day we would be willing to pay a fortune for someone who scored that many goals in France. I hope that we don’t learn to deeply regret this decision.

More like Balo-telli than we realise.

Aaron, (From the last thread) You don’t have to convince me …. I was the only person here calling for us to buy Trossard LAST summer. You might not agree with this, but Eddie has done an admirable job with smart runs and even good passes to teammates…but Martinelli had been making lots of mistakes. Trossard deserves to be in for Martinelli even more than for Eddie. I just watched a compilation video of how many times Martinelli missed Havertz making runs into the box, and just recycled the ball back to Tomiyasu or meekly out to the right. All… Read more »

Aaron

Nigel, I actually agree with you! Can you believe it?? Eddie played a monster game against palace, and even though he missed two good chances, one by less than a foot, the other due to experience, he got us the penalty that won the game. Martin loves to dribble with his head down, he had a chance to shoot at goal on that great pass from Havertz, he took 4 touches when it called for 1, and wasted the chance! Trossard makes the entire front line go, can interchange all across the front, and way better against teams that drop… Read more »

Anyone seen the report of Mike Dean confessing that he failed to send a ref to the pitch side monitor in a game to ‘save the ref from further grief’ because the ref was his pal and had already had a tough game?

And people believe these blunders are genuine human errors!!!

I hope we have a sell on clause for Balogun

True on Mo. If Arteta likes and wants to keep him, we cannot question it. Same with Harvetz, if Arteta wants him in the starting XI, I am going to back him over all the football managers on social media bashing Kai left right and center.

I also agree with Nigel. F*ck me.

Martinelli is one of our top scorers(and fastest players), replacing him with Trossard hoping he assists Havertz to score as much or more is Not a good plan.

Montana Gooner

If you compare the Saliba and Balo situations, it makes sense that Balo is leaving. He’s obviously all about himself which makes me worried with the USMNT.

Terminating Pepe’s contract would just be lazy imo He’s hardly a crap player, he’s just not good enough for an elite team That there are zero clubs in the world who could be willing to spend 10m on him for example strikes me just as teams wanting to take the piss given they know we have a record of paying players to leave Players worse than Pepe have been bought left right and center throughout Europe this summer. But only he is worthless? No chance. We just need to get better at marketing and selling our assets. I mean literally… Read more »

The Tierney loan only makes sense if there’s an obligation to buy at a fair price

If not, it’s just a charity deal

Aasim

Last season, our title challenge got derailed due to injuries to Saliba and Chenko. It was obvious we needed cover in the defensive line, especially since we will be playing the Champions League.
And we did amazing transfer business 🙄. Rice as a direct replacement for Xhaka. Timber who is now out for the better part of the season as replacement for KT, and Kai.
So we have added zero depth to our back line. We have added one attacking player to our squad. And it has cost us c.160m. JOKE

China1

Timer was a good signing but left us with 2 dedicated LBs and 2 RBs who can play there (timber and Tomi) Timber is out long term. Zinchenko is injury prone as is Tomi. Seems very very odd to me that we’d prefer not to keep Tierney That to me is a very strange gamble in this situation unless we’ve got a new player lined up but there are no guarantees said new player hits the ground running and how much would top quality cost? Much more logical to keep Tierney rather than unnecessarily getting rid then forcing ourselves to… Read more »

Like we literally had by some margin the most squad depth in the league at LB 2 weeks ago

2 weeks on and we may have backed ourselves into a corner where we have just one dedicated LB who is injury prone and his backup will be our injury prone backup RB unless we spend money

Why are we putting ourselves into this position? Feels honestly pointless and very risky

TeeCee

Eddie is a tryer, gives his all and could be a decent player for Fulham or a club of that stature. Unfortunately he will NEVER be good enough for a team looking to fight for the title/win the CL. Arsenal have settled on two strikers who are good for 10-12 goals a season, maybe 15 at a (big) push. It’s not good enough.
Put Toney up front and we’ll all be saying…..’ God, that’s what we were missing’!!

Omozuafo Frank

There is a need to get a LB in if Tierney is out. This should be a player who can play as a left back and a right back to cover up in case of injuries. We should not gamble on the thought that our players will be okay.

Andy1886

Three years older than Eddie Pedro? 🤣🤣🤣

EdTheRed

I think it stinks of arrogance to loan KT3. We literary wasted two right backs in first two games playing them on the left back, while he sat on the bench.

I wish I was more intelligent to understand Arteta’s genius.

EdTheRed

I also wish I was more intelligent to understand Pedro’s reasoning. Pedro writing about KT3 exit: “I’m glad he landed his move, he’s a top player, just not suited to the system.” Pedro, a paragraph later, writing about Elneny staying: ” I don’t think Big Mo is going to go, he’s there for the culture. He has no ambition to be anything more than a squad player and everyone at the club adores him” I wish I was more intelligent to understand why is it more important to keep below average midfielder who embraces “the culture”, rather than top defender… Read more »

What I will say is I was more confident this time last season than I am today of winning the title ، the team basically picked itself، the system and tactics were spot on ، saliba، jesus and Zinchenko transformed the side. What I see at the moment is a manager trying to fix something that wasn’t broken، square pegs in round holes ، little or no relationships on the pitch and a team that lacks real cohesion. NJ Gooner – I thought the same thing re Balo fee vs Archer when I first heard it but, thinking again: – it’s double the fee and, – Whilst Balo smashed it in France, he struggled at Boro where Archer did a decent job. 18a/3g vs 20a/11g. The championship is a tricky league too whereas France, outside of the traditional bigger clubs (say top 10), is pub football. – Balo is 2 years older – Balo will obviously command higher wages given his current Arsenal contract. On that basis the relative fees seem about right, especially if we have a… Read more »

Thinking of Lions terminology: Eddie is a mid-week test players vs the provinces with an uncapped happy tourist mentality. Balo is also a mid-week test player but with a starting XV mentality – that won’t work for the long-term dynamic, which will also be v important as to how Raya/Rambo works out

Bilbo

Aasim – deep breaths now, son. We Hasses Rice who can cover for Partey and CB if needed, as well as add some additional ball carrying ability. We signed Timber who can cover the whole back line – I’m not sure if Arteta exactly planned his ACL. Havertz is a replacement for Xhaka who was keen to leave and can play in a number of positions. Eddie needs to work hard in training on his finishing as that is the only way he will make it in view of his limitations as a CF. As he is not a CF who will bully defenders and hold up play He needs to look at what made the likes of Defoe and Lineker successfull i.e.snapping up the half chances and 100% clinically burying the good ones.

Foxy

Glad to see I was not the only one not over impressed by Martinelli’s performance against Palace, when not able to put his head down and run at goal he seems to quickly run out of ideas and just looks to pass it back or sideways. Hopefully Havertz will learn to get the ball quicker into spaces that Martinelli can exploit with his pace and Arteta will use Trossard more when Martinelli is misfiring or a game does not suit him tactically.

Pierre

Bilbo Your terminology is too simplistic، it could be said that Eddie is willing to fight for his place at one of the best clubs in the country (possibly europe)، whilst Balogun is happy to ply his trade for an average french side in a far weaker league . I think it shows a stronger personality to stay and fight for your place than take the money and run، Eddie has had enough suitors over the last few years to have walked away from Arsenal but decided that he wanted to fight for his place… The hardest thing in football… Read more »

I wouldn’t worry about Martinelli، he’ll come good ، and let’s not forget his contributions to 2 of our goals in the opening 2 games.

Personally I think he is a far better player when making runs between the CB and full back channel than hunting the touch line.

As yet he has not built up any real on field relationship with Havertz or Tomiyasu، maybe zinchenko returning will give him the spark he needs .

raptora

Pierre,
That’s why I’m so annoyed we lost Timber, who was technical, fast, dribbler, intelligent, he could tuck in the middle but also go down the touch line as a typical full back. Martinelli would have flourished with Jurrien… Jurrien has more levels to his game than Zinny who is a better playmaker but that’s it. Sadly, the forming of the blockbuster Timberelli has been delayed by a year.

Glad about Eddie, sad about Tierney. System or no system, still our best fullback. And puzzling with no Timber. Hard to see Partey as a permanent replacement, so l’d guess a full-back is top of Arteta’s last-buy list. Unless he”s a promotion for an Arsenal youngster. Maybe Tierney’s chronic injuries counted against him?

Madhu

Pierre
Agree with your post. When we are faced with low block we have lots of sidewards and back passing when we are at the edge of the penalty box. We need someone to take a chance and dribble through the defense. Eddie did that to an extent but we need others to do that as well.

China1

If we flog Tierney and buy a replacement and said replacement doesn’t hit the ground running we’re going to be up shit creek without a paddle Because we know zin is injury prone and his only proper backup will be Tomi who is good but injury prone and supposed to be White’s cover as well. I’d much rather we just keep Tierney and accept that when he plays we have to slightly tweak the approach. Good managers manage to tweak game plans a lot. We’ve already seen lots of tweaks this summer with partey at RB for example. Why is… Read more »

If there’s not even an obligation to buy Tierney that’s a dreadful, dreadful deal

What exactly is in it for us except losing a useful player?

This is literally charity for sociedad. We’ve gone from the most depth in the league at LB to paper thin in 2 whole weeks

Bonkers, honestly. If this comes back to bite us this season, Artedu should be in big trouble

Trilbilly

If we’re letting KT go the club must have something else in mind because it would leave us seriously short, worse than last season actually. It’s getting late to go back into the market so maybe Kiwor is the answer.

Karsa

I don’t think Tierney is anywhere near as good as people suggest.

His injury record is appalling and has limited any opportunity to assess him as a regular member of our team.

He has 3 years left on his deal so plenty of time to sell him next summer if he bangs. He will be playing CL this season so plenty of opportunity to put himself in the shop window for next season.

A loan fee and wages paid is not a complete charity case.

Savage

Correct me if I’m wrong: are all Man City’s left backs actually centre backs?

Bob N16

Eddie is a model professional, extremely hard working always gives 100%. That said I’ve a suspicion that with Jesus’s pending availability, he might bang in a few on Saturday just to push forward his case.

Don’t want Jesus rushed back, let Eddie take the strain for the meanwhile.

EdTheRed

KT3 spent less time being injured in last 15 months than Zinichenko. Let that one sink in.

Bilbo

Pierre, it was an analogy which, as ever, tried to simplify things, yes. The main point being: Balogun wants starting role, no matter what or where. Eddie wants the same but at Arsenal and is happy to work/bide his time to get it. I don’t disagree his mentality seems fantastic.

I’m not against Kiwior at LB but then who is cover at CB?

We have options no doubt. Look you can even put Saka at LB and Trossard RW if you have to in an emergency.

But what is worrying is that all these options (unless we have an amazing academy prospect or go back into the market – which has its own risks) require us stretching the squad

Artedu now needs to spring a rabbit out of their ass to make this work

Positive pete

Madhu. We already have him. He’s called Emile Smith Rowe.

China, couldn’t agree more.

Positive pete

China.Have no fear .Arteta & Edu are about to pull the proverbial rabbit out of their ass.I have no doubt.

Why I Gunna

Positive, shame Arteta never plays him

Bilbo

The approach to squad building is based on players’ flexibility across a number of positions. Kiwior covering left back assumes that tomi, timber and Rice aren’t injured at the same time. Squads are 25 people – we can’t have 3 dedicated options per position. Ultimately we need to have decent theoretical coverage across positions that can maintain our approach and a slice of luck.

China1

I am curious tho do we have any good academy prospects there?

Would be very nice if we can have internal cover from the academy

I’m all for it if one of the kids has some genuine talent

Habesha Gooner

The only reason I can see why Arteta sanctioned this deal of KT and wouldn’t bring in a replacement is if he plans to use Partey at RB much more often this season. We have Jorginho in the middle too, so may be he thinks he can use Partey as an inverted RB whenever Zinchenko isn’t there to play. And he will pit one of Tomi or Kiwior at LB with Partey at RB inverting. It is still a risk. I would prefer we would loan a good player at LB paying a good loan fee. But Arteta might feel,… Read more »

Karsa, KT is a fine LB, but not a hybrid LB/MF. Zinchenko is the latter, but a poor defender. He got found out towards the end of last season, I wouldn’t be confident that when he comes back he’ll have the same impact as he originally had.

andy1886

Eddu – whisper it, but we might need Tavares…

andy1886

Mike Dean btw is now a self-confessed crook. Should be banned from officiating at any level (I know he’s retired but even so, it’s the principle). If possible should be charged with bringing the game into dispute.

China1

I may be in the minority but I’m really not against using partey at RB sometimes but only under the condition that his fitness is very very carefully managed. If we pick him at even CM every week it’s a big risk. At RB with those sprints he’s a giant red flag after more than a couple of games in a row imo. Certainly wouldn’t recommend ever doing it two games in a week.

That’s an excellent bit of business, they are buying low and selling very high.
Kudus chose them because he will get lots of game time there.

Mike Dean’s self awareness is shocking. I always knew he was a mad man. He basically admitted what we have all thought for years. These refs are highly incompetent and have their own club which won’t hold them to any accountability. PL teams should really be questioning this. The game has moved on to a high level competition as it has ever been. Bit the refereeing has gotten worse or is still standing still. It needs to match the level of competition.

Diss,

It looks like we’ve struggled to move on Nuno as well and he isn’t on a big contract. But you’re right, that’s certainly a factor. And so is Arteta’s tendency to put players in the freezer until no one remembers who they are.

Anyhow, we did our incomings very efficiently this summer which is a big improvement. We just need to make sure we don’t run into FFP issues because we can’t balance the books. Plus, KSE won’t be doing the sugar daddy thing forever.

Howard

Does Arsenal need a comedian? Someone who spends time on the bench and laughs his time off and get paid 50/60k a month?

That is what 30yr old non-ambitious Elneny does.

Marko

It pains me to see him go, but Eddie is better than him.

I dunno about that we’re about to get a club record fee for someone who has 209 total minutes played for Arsenal. Meanwhile I don’t think I’ve heard of anyone trying for Nketiah. Which is great cause we love him though that seems to be mostly due to him not really kicking up a fuss when he’s on the bench.

Marko

The head of the Spanish FA, Rubiales has refused to quit his position after lip kissing a female player in the final and doing crotch grab celebration next to the Spanish queen and her daughter

Meanwhile Don just thinks he’s a man being a man. Very classy

Marko

Anyway very interesting last week of the window for Arsenal. Are there goals just get in sales enough for a net 100 million spend or will they actually bring in some more players. Cause I can tell you right now if we don’t replace some of the defenders we’ve lost or are losing then I can see us struggling later on in the season. We won’t challenge.
