LATE WINDOW MOVES?

by .

We have 11 days left of the transfer window. There are two holes in the squad that I think could become problems if luck doesn’t go our way.

  1. We still have no cover for Bukayo Saka
  2. Jurrien Timber out means we’re kind of back to squad one with full back cover that can keep the levels the same

Arteta was extremely excited to have Timber around, he exceeded expectations in training because he could cover 3 positions to an outrageously high level.

Losing him means a right-back fail will see Tomi coming in who can’t invert. A left-back fail and we’re looking at rolling with Kiwior who is far from proven anywhere let alone for a long stint doing what the injury-prone Zinchenko does.

The good news is the Ukrainian played 60 minutes against Luton earlier in the week. Technically, we could see Arsenal line up with our strongest defence of last season vs Palace. The only issue with that groups is it creaks when too many minutes are dished out. Zinchenko is injury prone, we have to accept that he’ll be in and out of the side. Ben White gets tight calf muscles. Saliba breaks down if his minutes aren’t managed.

This wasn’t an issue until the end of the season last yr – it could be an issue by December this time because the players will be dropping 3 games a week from September.

Saka only played 30 minutes the other day, I am less concerned about his replacement, though it is irritating we’ve not found anyone in 3 seasons to do the job – and Moussa Diaby looked great for the 3 minutes Villa were decent against Newcastle.

Ideally, we’d be able to jump on the blower with Pep G and take Laporte or Cancelo on loan for the season. I have no intel here, but I’d imagine Arteta blew that bridge after last season – finishing second isn’t a great way to show you are trustworthy with cast-offs. Outside that, we’d have to look at Europe and see if there’s any value at the clubs that have no money… issue is, the type of players we need are very specific and very expensive.

We might have more money to play with than we think.

  • £40m Balogun
  • £30m Nuno
  • £21m Xhaka
  • £25m KT
  • £10m Turner
  • £5m Trustey

£131m in

£208m out

Net £77m summer.

I mean – WOW. But that number might give us a little bit of wiggle room, considering we normally spend about £140m net each season, and now we have Champions League football.

Arsenal aren’t desperate to sell – but we’re entering a phase of the window where you’ll see clubs desperate to buy. Balogun has a record of putting the ball in the net, Chelsea needs a striker, and so does Spurs, West Ham, and Crystal Palace. All are flush with cash. I expect to see some movement this week and hopefully that frees Arsenal up to go hunting under the radar and get some coverage for their weak links.

Topline from yesterday: As I suspected, Spurs new coach is NOT the busted flush we hoped for. He’s an honest hire that works for the Spurs brand. He has them playing some decent football at times but it is clear he doesn’t have the player to deliver on his system right now. They’re going to win some games big, but they’ll also get walloped at times. United could have been three up by halftime if they had someone better than Antony on the right. They really looked lost though, there were moments because they have good players, but overall, the midfield they’ve built lacks legs, and it’s clear there have been some terrible recruitment ideas this window. Things I’m watching – De Gea couldn’t kick, but he kept them in games. Rashford scored everything he touched, can he keep that up? Erik Ten Haag looks like he should be a world class coach – but reality is what we’re seeing on the pitch at the start of season two and a boatload of spend is pretty poor. Just look at the decisions he’s made – Bruno as captain, the reintegration of Mason Greenwood, £70m on Casemior, £100m on Antony, Mason Mount with no plan, a very small centre back… these issue catch up in the end.

City vs Newcastle was a better game of football. Manchester City look like they did last season for the most part. The new signings look decent. The style of play is the same. Newcastle were way better in the second half, they are still violent, they have talent, but they aren’t on the same planet when it comes to passing or bravery around the press. Both sides are still a threat warning this season, unfortunately.

Our game against Palace is going to be a test. Palace are athletic, they have great attacking technicians, and their players love playing under the lights against Arsenal. We need to not lose, team has to manage the pressure of a brutal game, and we’re going to have to take our chances. It won’t be a cake walk, but it’ll be tough – playing against their power and pace 2 games in would be tough for anyone, we have to be sharp if we want to excite there with points.

Right, that’s me done, we’ll be dropping a rival watch podcast a little bit later, so stay tuned!  Get our Before The Whistle if you can!

Kiwanika I agree with until song number 25…then it went a bit Butlins. I was listening on spotify random but he was good. Fresh. Then it went a bit silly. But that may have been music fatigue.

Un,

I say I’d rather people look for the positives in Eddie’s game rather than be unnecessarily critical. He’s our second or third choice striker depending on the opponents and our game plan.

I prefer to point out that without him, we would probably have 2 points now instead of 6.
Plus his work rate is something that deserves appreciation.

Not a bad return for his place in the squad..
United and Chelsea could use a player who contributes like that. They would pay 50+ mil and at least double the wages for what we’re getting out of him.

Guns of Hackney

Phil Collins is ridiculous. I will not hear a bad word about him. Against all odds is the best ‘let’s get back together, not get back together’ song ever.

Sussudio? Forget about it.

Wish it would rain? Oh my god.

PC is so good. Also don’t do George Michael a bad one either.

Bob N16

Fuck me Sid, that has got to be your worst take, ever!

‘Girlfriend in a coma’ – sweet melody with wonderfully contrasting lyrics. Shame Morrisey’s gone doolally. The Smiths were a fantastic, original, influential band, no doubt.

Un

Nigel

His qualities are obvious but if I see his inclusion as a detriment then do I not have license to express that view?

Bob N16

Phil Collins should have stuck to the drums, I blame Peter Gabriel.

Kai Havertz stats vs Palace:

24/27 Passes
2 Chances created
90% Pass accuracy
39 Touches
4 Passes into Final third
3 Recoveries

MOST DUELS WON for the second game in a row.

Many here are ignorant of these facts.

Ah the 80’s… the one genre I love from that era is Industrial music starting with Throbbing Gristle, Front 242, Front Line Assembly, Skinny Puppy, Ministry. This IS my favourite style if music. The 80’s also had great heavy metal with 2 of the most influential bands ever: Iron Maiden and Motorhead to just name those 2!! As much as I do respect the Beatles, I am all the way with the Rolling Stones. Far more rock n’ roll than the Beatles. Chuck any vinyl on and I’ll dance to it with gusto. Have to say a little bit envious of the music chatter as I never feel my range is wide enough. I’ll check out some Fela Kutti. I gather he got Ginger Baker in some serious shit as he thought it a good idea to forward on a suitcase full of weed to Gingers address. Poor old Ginger got a serious grilling by the drug squad and I think had his child kicked out of his public school due to the scandal. Poor old Ginger wasn’t amused! Onto football . Have to echo those metal memories.

I remember seeing Motorhead 5 time in 7 nights on the Bomber tour.

I still have quite a bit of industrial stuff from that era. It may be a bit bleak for some but Filthpig was my favoutite Ministry album.

The 80’s was also the era when Epic Doom and Thrash metal bands walked the earth in great numbers.

Un

Everyone had their speakers on now 😂

TheLegendaryDB10

Ha ha

Funnily enough, Throbbing Gristle is old English slang for a hard on. Very provocative for its time and was used as a band name deliberately to shock.

Wicked Willy

Un

Pulp Fiction and Ferris Bueller were my favourite films for most of my life, and yes that soundtrack is immense! Not sure if I have a favourite anymore, so many candidates for my top 20. Trainspotting and LOck Stock also coming to
Mind. I seem to recall American Beauty being pretty good too. Loved Zimmerman’s work on Inception. Two of my favourite scenes are Barber’s Adagio For Strings at the end of Platoon, and Everything In It’s Right Place in Vanilla Sky. Proper powerful stuff.

You lot seem to have yet to experience that coming to Jesus moment!

WengerEagle

Pulp Fiction is a strong shout for favourite film.

Also loved the Dark Knight, albeit an obvious one. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest too, Jack’s a diamond.

Marko

Do you think that hurts me Don? We know our national team is shite we haven’t had a good team since 02? 04? I haven’t watched an Irish international in over 10 years easily. Meanwhile england are on their 3rd or 4th golden generation and they’re still losers. Let that sink in while you’re shit talking the ladies

Marko

Actually closer to 20 years. They’re dire.

Malaga fans master trolling of their club, they put on fake reception at airport for some random chinese guy who looks very confused pretending he’s their new player, to encourage their club to buy some players.

Yeah Dark Knght blew me away. One of my top films of this century along with Twin Towers, Inception, Parasite and Top Gun Maverick. Need to see Oppenheimer again to see if that qualifies. It’s an extraordinary film.

Jack Nicholson in Cuckoo’s Nest the greatest acting performance of all time? I certainly remember thinking that when I saw it 20 years ago….

WengerEagle

Watched Fatal Attraction there the other day for first time, class film and holds up time-wise.

Michael Douglas is a legend, seems to always play somebody slowly losing his mind in his films. War of the Roses, The Game… top quality stuff

Fab Romano –

Deivid Washington already completed medical tests at Chelsea — it’s about final documents, formal steps then the Brazilian striker will be unveiled as new #CFC player

Marko

Ghost and the darkness is great. I haven’t seen it in so long

WengerEagle

Jwl

Haha. Yep, certain films just resonate differently when you’re a fully grown adult.

Like Office Space. Goes from being a comedy to being basically a semi-depressing documentary (still hilarious though) on 9-5 life.

Nigel Tufnel

There was a period where every film Michael Douglas was really good. A real movie star with presence amd picked good projects.
I loved Black Rain. Then fatal attraction, wall street,, it went on and on… the game was great too! David Fincher I think?

WengerEagle

Frankie Boyle had a great bit on consultants.

”Management Consultants “, lol

Socrates

I think the red got conned for the second yellow. If it does result to a red however there should be a VAR review,no reason not to. As for Tomi’s first yellow it was deserved. The ref usually books whoever has the ball after time wasting from other players. I was actually yelling at my TV for Tomi to throw it but he didn’t even when he had open players clearly time wasting and not very smart from him being a defender.

jwl

“What would you say you do here?” still has me laughing twenty years later, Weagle.

Socrates

Haverts is a liability defending. On several occasions he results to shirt grabbing because he doesn’t fancy running back playing as an eight. He will prove costly in that position if we are playing better teams. He’s good as a 9 where he doesn’t have to track back as much and it seemed to work against City in the community shield.

Marko

Dunno if anyone is keeping an eye on any bundesliga this season but Leverkusen under Xabi Alonso look a decent watch this season. Got decent balance to them Tapsoba and Frimpong look good and they’ve got a new striker who looks decent and Florian Wirtz is looking like every bit of the superstar that he is while also putting to bed the whole never the same after an acl injury.

Northbanker

We will have to put up with Havertz until Nwaneri takes his place

Luteo Guenreira

Am I wrong or is Havertz the only CL winner Arsenal have ever had as an active player?

My favourite Trash Metal bands are Metallica and Megadeath. Slayer is not far behind.

If you still like your Thatsh Metal, I strongly suggest you look into the band Power Trip. Brilliant band. Shame their singer, Riley Gale, passed away in 2020.

Love 80s music. Too many amazing songs to ever name

I’m a millennial but GYA Vice City showed me the way with its 80s soundtrack on the in game car radio

80s rock, 80s power ballads, 80s pop, whatever there’s just too much not to love

Of all the 80s bands I’d love to see live, my top choice would probably be tears for fears followed by Frankie goes to Hollywood. Phil collins tho? Awww yea

If Chelsea want balogun we should insist on 60m, no less

1) we’d be selling to a rival
2) he’s good
3) there’s competition for his signature
4) Chelsea have proven they will pay anything for anyone and to us that should be no exception.
5) they just got 30 odd million for a kid who has basically never played for them. If Hall is worth that Balogun has to be double
