ARSENAL WIN – BUT KILLER INSTINCT ISSUE LINGER

by .

Opening day of the season is all about three points. Players aren’t fit, new players haven’t adapted, and those games are very hard. Arteta and the boys delivered 3 points, we scored two goals, and we mostly controlled the game. So any moaning here is through the lens of perfection you need to be to win the league against Manchester City.

The big whinge: We lack killer instinct. When we go two goals up, instead of going for the jugular, we play with our food, and sometimes it runs off. Forest should never have been let back into the game, but predictably, at 2-0 up, we let them back in. This is a problem we’ve had for the full tenure of Arteta. The one common thread is our players are always very young. We aged down again this summer, so we’re still not past the experience issues, so it’s not a surprise to see this sort of switch-off show up so early in the season.

I felt like we lacked a bit of drive in the second half. Maybe under the leadership of Xhaka, we’re a different beast. Maybe Declan Rice in 3months time can pick up the team. Whatever it is, we need to shift the mindset when we take 2-0 leads because blowing them will kill us in the title race.

A lot of the game seemed to turn when Jurrien Timber exited the building with a knee injury that looked worrying. Tomi doesn’t give us the same security or threat in the final third. Maybe the team felt the pain of Timber more than we know.

Up until that point we looked tasty, not Barca/LA levels of flavor, but enjoyable enough. Our press was really good, we controlled the ball nicely, Thomas Partey inverted well, and we were rewarded with two excellent goals. Martinelli pirouetted a ball into Eddie’s feet, the striker shifted inside and buried his chance. Great that Arteta sang his praises after, Eddie was in the side because he trained exceptionally this week, Mikel called him a role model. The second goal was pure magic. A Timber ball recovery, a nice exchange with Partey, Bukayo Saka cutting inside with the rocket shot into the top corner. World class stuff.

The second half, we came out trying to absorb a very average side. We lost possession from a corner, Kai getting a whack in the face, Forest powered at our goal, defenders limbs all over the place, a stupid goal was conceded.

That spurred us on a little bit, but we still gave away silly freekicks and setplays in areas their tall boys thrive.

Arsenal saw the game out, but it wasn’t comfortable in the way we’d have hoped, and we did no real damage to the goal difference against a side that’ll concede many this season.

But… 3 points on the board.

So what else did we love?

Declan Rice has a beastmode recovery setting we’ve never had. He’s so fast and power when he’s sniffing out danger or chasing back. You realise what we lacked in Xhaka immediately. He was quieter in the second half, but he’s going to be some player for us.

Kai getting some slander online, but I think his performance was better than many let on. He’s starting with a low favorability rating, if he doesn’t score or assist, people are calling for him to be sold. I rate him, it’ll take a while for him to settle, but he gives us aggression and class in the final third.

Martinelli was electric all game. He has so much control over his Ferrari engine these days and he’s going to score a lot of goals this season. His assist for Eddie was lovely, hopefully we see some goals very soon.

Aaron Ramsdale has some shaky moments, the kicking wasn’t always there, and he flapped badly for a late Forest cross. He knows what’s coming. The Sword of Raya hangs over his head and I suspect Mikel is going to chop him as soon as he can. Arsenal conceding one from two shots on target isn’t Ramsdale’s fault, but it certainly feels like a theme from last season we’ve revisited on day one.

Plenty of work needs to be done in the next week to sharpen, but there’s a lot to like about this new squad. Mikel Arteta leaned hard into his new toys for the first game. Maybe he galaxy-brained a little too hard on the Gabriel benching, but he’s trying to build out his toolkits in the easier games so we can take full advantage of them when it really counts.

This is going to be a BIG season, we have what we need to compete, let’s see what he’s got for the Crystal Palace game next Monday.

See you in the comments!

My theory is not that Amrabat will be amazing or that any of the expensive signings in particular will flop

But that some of those expensive players definitely will. And come the January transfer window or next summer, we’ll all be standing around chatting about how another 5 players who no one had heard of before are now hot shit and subject to huge bids from big clubs – missing the point that 12 months earlier they were ‘the other guy’ with a low price tag simply because the big clubs hadn’t noticed them yet.

Marko

How can people have such short memories to assume expensive and wanted by big club = because player is worthy?

China I think you might be having a separate debate honestly. I’m just saying Amrabat and Endo were targeted after Liverpool lost out on main targets Caicedo and Lavia and there’s a reason for that. They’re not considered as good.

Marko

It’s also a bit of a blanket statement that expensive equals flop because they’re expensive for a reason right? If you want to argue value for money then you can probably say it about 90% of transfers because the money in football is frankly disgusting

“Why not all grow together in a spirit of mutual enrichment?”

Because we’re not women, Wicked Willy. Le grove is talk radio for people who read, all sorts make their opinions known and you agree or not. If you expect a forum where there is massive circle jerk of everyone agreeing with you about how great Arteta is, you should visit untold arsenal where you’ll be warmly received.

Bilbo

Sid, with all due respect: lifting your missus out the bed once a week to wipe between the folds isn’t a great analogue for Timber recovering from an ACL.

Guns of Hackney

The last two comments from JWL and Bilbo are a kind of ‘this is Le Grove in a nutshell’ post.

Without context. Truly insane and intriguing at the same time. I’ll also assume even with context, they will be equally disturbing.

Le Grove is like an above ground version of a ‘Red Room’ found on the Dark Web.

Quality work guys.

jwl – it’s not about jerking off Arteta, it’s about having an interesting interaction without resorting to name calling if someone disagrees with you.

That siad you’re being a bit of a neanderthal- whoops!

jwl

It is very much about jerking off Arteta, Bob N16. Many here now expect sycophant behaviour towards Arteta when he’s done sweet fa so far and achieved some of our worst results in decades.

“it’s not about jerking off Arteta, it’s about having an interesting interaction without resorting to name calling if someone disagrees with you”

How are Nigel and Afc superfan going to be able to post with those rules?

They will be sorely missed…

Guns of Hackney

JWL Arteta absolutely IMO deliver this season or he should go. The backing, the financials etc have been outrageous and we have zero to complain about now. We’ve just been dealt a terrible blow defensively and I’m shocked we haven’t thrown money at another RB, but this is what Arteta is paid the big money for: solving problems. He’s done good, but as I said, this season has to be about delivering. No excuses and nowhere to hide. We have to say goodbye to Timber and get another body in asap. I’ve been banging the striker drum for months and… Read more »

That £30m for Nuno cannot be real btw. I expect we’re looking to make some profit on the £8m we paid 2 years ago – a fee of around £15-18m sounds reasonable. Monaco supposedly going for Daka so after Fulham sells Mitrovic maybe they are shaping up as the last candidate for Balo. Inter already got Thuram and Arnautovic – still a possibility but at the price we want. Tierney’s market is also shrinking with teams supposedly picking different players instead. Newcastle – Lewis Hall, Villa – Marcos Acuna and Real Sociedad – Reguillon. Late in the summer, teams are… Read more »

I agree, Guns of Hackney. I don’t believe any manager would have been a huge success immediately after Wenger but enough time has passed that we should be demanding excellence and stop being enthused by failure like so many are now.

Pity because you interact with the posters that do the name calling and you NEVER call them out. You only get riled up in your passive aggression style when someone is critical of Arteta

AFC Forever

There is no excuse for you lot bringing your anti-Arteta agenda onto this blog this season. None whatsoever after the season we have just had. It just proves what you are.

You have to be a special kind of stupid to get everything wrong and still think you’re right. I’m talking about those of you who do think you are Arsenal fans, not the trolls that egg you on.

Guns of Hackney

“I hope we have a plan” says Rap. Lolz. That’s a big no old friend. We’ve just lost a what looked like quality RB for at least 5 years and we’re doing nothing except thinking that ‘we can solve this internally’. They can’t. We need a real RB now. We’ve bought three players. One’s gone for at least 7 years, the other is shit and Rice was never alone going to push us to a league title. My question is, what exactly have we done this year? We know last season was a massive fluke. City are still a machine.… Read more »

AFC forever. Dude. Dude. You are allowed to be critical of your own team. It’s okay to do that. Do you not think Real Madrid fans brutalise their team (900 times league winner and 15 times Champions league winners)? Of course they do. Real should be beyond reproach based on their success but they are not immune. Everyone on planet earth should be criticised. Without critique, we become lazy and self absorbed. Without fear, we cannot progress. I assume you work and have received an appraisal at some point? That’s not trolling. Your boss or work are finding ways for… Read more »

Now you’re back pretending you are to encourage the wankers who prefer opinions of anti-Arsenal fans than genuine fans. “We know last season was a massive fluke.” I’ve heard many Spurs fans saying that on their forums. we really need to start shipping out players now so we can at least dream of a great transfer-deadline-day signing

Guns of Hackney

AFC Cool your jets. Okay, let me correct myself. What have we done this year should have read, what have we done for the last 20 years in the league. Better? I am an Arsenal fan. Period. You haven’t addressed my question to you. Without criticism, we don’t move forward. That’s a fact. Arsenal have not done anything of note for 20 years. That’s a fact. If we don’t win the league or go really well in the CL or win the FA Cup (at least) this season would by any other metric be considered a failure. And that would… Read more »

“You have to be a special kind of stupid to get everything wrong and still think you’re right”

Yeah, like thinking Arteta was going to come in and just wave a magic wand around on the training ground and take that squad of players he had at the time anywhere.

Funny how the people that believed Pedros little fairy tale the most are crowing the loudest about being right the whole time after the whole squad has been replaced…….

Positive pete

So JWL let’s be clear. You think Arteta is a failure.Wow.So what’s the bar? That he SHOUD have won the title last season.Didn’t.So sack him?Im struggling to see your angle/ agenda.

I’m pretty certain that jwl did not suggested any of the accusations you’ve just made.
Why is it hard for some to tolerate opinions that differ from theirs?
Maybe Pedro should just close the blog since he’s not available anymore to dictate what it’s about. It used to be a blog for all opinions.

Marko

Very true Freddie I remember a common criticism of Emery was that he had a top 4 squad and yet Arteta came in and took a sledgehammer to the team. Funny that

Guns. There’s a school of thought that thinks the ‘ spending’ was just to catch up & now keep up.Not a guarantee of success. As per current plight of Spuds,Chavs,Dippers & Manure. Not a given I’m afraid.Wish it was.And there’s no manager on earth who will walk through our door & guarantee It.

Guns of Hackney

I appreciate that but. But. We have outspent everyone else on the planet. You have to concede that alone demands something special.

I like Arteta and was a big proponent of his appointment. I fancies him before The villa manager. But hey ho.

However no one should be immune. Arteta is no different. He hasn’t built up the same love as Wenger did or done what Wenger did. Arteta has spent more and got way more leniency. But he needs to deliver.

Positive pete

Dissenter. If you go back to say the start of last season or maybe a little earlier on Tets tenure you can scroll through the absolute dogs abuse he was getting on this blog from a small hardcore.Daily,I might add. That is a fact.Like it or not. There has been a kickback from many who don’t agree. Is that what’s so upsetting.?
Dissenter.Accusations? Fairly obvious I’d say.So you’re saying JWL doesn’t think he’s a failure.Which is it?

Tom

I dont often make predictions but I made one a few seasons back that Arteta could have a long Arsenal career as the manager without winning the league.
No crystal ball necessary for that one, Arsenal fans are very forgiving and understanding.

Dissenter, picking up someone who says, for example that Arteta was a failure last season is not the same as always attacking anyone who is critical of Arteta. Surely you can see the difference, if not then I’m afraid any dialogue between us is futile.

Positive pete

Yes Bob.Though that would have been pretty clear. But hey ho.

Marko

a long Arsenal career as the manager without winning the league.

Say it ain’t so

Tom

Here’s a hypothetical: late in the season Arsenal are distant third, 10 points behind City and Newcastle.
Q. Who do most Arsenal fans want to win the title?
A. City, of course.
But why ?
Both clubs owned by repressive regimes, so hardly a difference there, but Newcastle winning would make Arteta look bad.

Positive pete

Where’s everyone? Afternoon tea? Beer break?Siesta? Will we ever see Peds again. Are we being frozen out?

Positive pete

Depends how much they’d have spent Tom.As for wanting Citeh? Not necessarily so.Definitely don’t want them to win 4 titles on the bounce as No one has ever done it & we are one of the select few who’ve won a hat trick of titles PLUS wouldnt want them going unbeaten.A distinct possibility. So the barcodes might get my vote.Interesting.

Marko

Thierry Henry’s birthday is today. A moment to remember how lucky we were to witness such a gifted player who gave us so many great memories.

Tom, I prefer to always look at things from the perspective of an Arsenal supporter not as an Arteta fan so your hypothesis really only applies to that minority fanbase.

There is an interesting article published today by Mirror reporting that the mother of Lewis-Skelly one of Arsenal’s best young talents has set up an advisory service for parents of young football talents. The service is designed to give professional advice to parents of promising young footballers to prevent them falling into the hands of agents who provide the wrong incentives to young footballers. Apparently Lewis- Skelly does not have an agent and the parents want to keep him level-headed during formative period of his career. Apparently the programme is supported by a number of well known ex professional footballers… Read more »
