ARSENAL DECLAN BID EXCEEDS £100M – BUT WHU STILL FIND PROBLEMS

by .

Arsenal went back in for Declan with another bid last night and it was big – £105m big.

But, whaddya know, West Ham found a way to be upset about the structure of the deal. According to multiple choices, Sullivan wants the money over two years, Arsenal offering it over 3 years… negotiations are on-going.

Don’t be shocked to see them slowball this in the hope of City coming in with a blockbuster number…

West Ham want to be in a constant state of upset, because they want the best deal. It’s quite painful watching them pull every media trick with whip fans into a frenzy but overall, it seems pretty clear to me:

  1. City isn’t that interested. They could have bid £105m yesterday, they didn’t, the whole entrance of them felt very odd
  2. Declan Rice still has Arsenal as his preference – though there’s no doubt in my mind he’s hedging his bets just in case West Ham cancels the Arsenal bid OR City come in with a very rich number we can’t match

£105m is a wild number already, we’re not really getting any sort of value here. This is premium cash for a premium player. Go any higher based on emotion, we’ll start to look like we’re getting raked, and I’d imagine any higher and it’ll start to impact what we can do elsewhere. It’s just annoying we have to go through this dance so publicly with West Ham versus them just picking up the phone and getting this sorted promptly.

Still, you can’t knock the ambition of Arsenal and the relative calmness around how we’ve moved. I’m confident the deal will get done and I am 80% hopeful he ends the summer in an Arsenal shirt.

Kai Havertz deal is done – because we’ve seen the entirely leaked reveal video. Quite mad that you can lose an entire announcement video. That’s a severe breach of trust and must be awful for the folk who spent time editing the video. But there you go, hard to stop leaks when everyone wants your work.

Timber also getting closer – this transfer seems to come with very little drama, mostly because United have managed to keep their noses out of it.

The rumors point to Arsenal looking at a second 6 if we lose Partey, I hope it’s Lavia, but the stories seem to be pointing towards a tug of war between Chelsea, Arsenal, and Liverpool. It helps to be in the Champions League at this point.

Ok, short one today, see you in the comments!

Ian Wright:
“This season will be a massive learning curve for this team. That’s the least we can get out of it. I can’t say too much, it’s only eight games, but there are players waiting to come if Arsenal finishes in the Champions League…”

I mentioned this quote here at the time and said it was probably Rice.
From January on it became a little more whispered about that we were wooing Rice.

salparadisenyc

Big day for the Arsenal boys, Rice not going to City speaks volumes about this club, Arteta and it’s trajectory. Once City entered thought we’d crumble, instead big Stan showed more than most envisioned. It’s a shit ton of cash, for me the value is there. Sets a precedent of ambition. Players are going to want to join Arsenal, fully awakened into a movement lead by young talent in Saka, Martinelli and Ødegaard. High level talent in any industry wants to be involved in and challenged by the sharpest of edges. Expect the unexpected were the tip of the sphere… Read more »

Kudos has to go to Edu, Garlick, Lewis and co, for the way they’ve conducted the clubs’ business this summer, getting most of our biz done early makes a pleasant change and means the new additions will be nicely integrated into the way we play. Credit also to the ownership for stepping up to the plate when Man City fluttered their eyes expecting Arsenal to shrink away, The ‘usual suspects’ in the media will all be devastated to see a player of Declan Rice’s pedigree joining Arsenal and desperate to see us stumble early in the new campaign, imagine if… Read more »

its all about beating Man Shitty a few times each season.
Its the game I dread and also look forward to each season. Its a test of where we are, the barometer.
Id love next season to be where the apprentice beats the master. Then long may it last.

The more I see it, I think TP staying will really help us.
IF Mike is doing 4231 or some variation with 2 holding mids, we will be in beast mode with TP and Rice together. At least one season

Mg42-gd4..

Confirmed. Still a miserable POS in regards to Arsenal.

We will win CL under Arteta for sure, maybe before the PL because of Man City 115 advantages.

Nigel Tufnel

Zacharse,

We have the same knobs on legrove moving the objectives. Top 4 was the goal, then 2nd place to the cheating treble winners was not good enough.

Emiratesstroller

Some regular posters including myself do not understand why Partey could be offloaded this summer and a number of reasons have been given.

However, there could be one very logical reason for the decision. Partey represents Ghana and in
January to February 2024 the finals of African Nations Cup is held over 4 weeks.

Do we want to lose a key player in the middle of season for a month?

Guns of SF

ES
He is worth keeping, we have Jorginho on the bench and I hope we get lavia. If we lose him for a few weeks we have cover

Nigel Tufnel

Andy,

From what I can see, Havertz does loads more work pressing than Maddison. Maddison was always in my fantasy team because I see him as a glory guy.
More attacker, less midfielder, where Havertz is more balanced to replace Xhaka.

Nigel Tufnel

Marko sorry I’m hours behind traveling. I read the comments in order … that way i get my news as it came out. I love the reactions from the real fans… not so much from some of the resident creeps. The only summer being ruined by Arteta and Arsenal, is spurs and United fans.

Emiratesstroller

Guns of SF

Yes I will be also disappointed. He is a very good player.

However, I think that Arsenal are making a pragmatic decision. He is unlikely to play regularly in
starting eleven following arrival of Declan Rice and paying someone £250K PW to sit on bench is
not good value for money.

Arteta will not be expanding significantly the size of his squad. I suspect that it will increase by no
more than one player at most. However, there will be more rotation next season.

MG42

The Rice signing was a statement signing and for me it was always going to happen for at least two reasons and just look at the negotiations and not the player.. 1. We lost out on our number 1 target in the last TW. If we would loose out again on our number 1 target in this TW, that would be a serious hit on the credibility of the negotiation team in the eyes of other clubs and the media would be all over AFC.. So I had no doubt Rice would be ours.. 2. No one else was competing… Read more »

Having Partey stay for another year would be good but selling him whilst there’s still value and replacing with Lavia is probably the right thing to do. Either way, having the option of two reliable solid 6s at the base of midfield away against the big boys might just be the right pragmatic approach needed in the back 9 of the season if we’re still in it. Rice’s role in the initial comeback goal for WHam against us show he can be part of a quick transition and we can most likely let some of Martinelli/Saka/Jesus stay alert to a… Read more »

The Bard

Gunnernan come on mate wake up. Of course the selling club leak bids. The whole point is to create an auction to bump up the price.. it’s impossible to have secret bids. Rice isn’t a done deal until we know whether City match or trump our offer.

Emiratesstroller

I presume that Arsenal will operate next season either with a 4-3-3 or 3-4-3 line ups.

Our best midfield starting lineup in 4-3-3 system would most probably be Odegaard, Rice and Havertz. Jorginho and Smith-Rowe would most probably cover or rotate with Rice and Havertz. The question is who would cover or rotate with Odegaard.? Vieira was clearly the option brought in last season to do that job, but he proved lightweight and underwhelming.

So unless Vieira improves massively we will need someone else. Smith-Rowe or Trossard might be
considered options.

Kegunner

Don’t mess with the Arsenal 100 milli is yesterday’s chilli.

Guembuzy

Love all three signings. I will be much less worried if we keep Partey. Of all names mentioned for sale, th possibility of selling him makes me nervous. He should be kept at least for a year.

Guembuzy

The Kroenkes didn’t wake up one morning and said let’s shovel the money and make Arsenal great. And it’s not that Arteta has magical convincing powers. They trust him because so far he delivers what he promised. Little they care about some guys suffering with obsessive negativity on Le grove. Have a great day!

Mr Serge

Keeping partey is a must we have a lot of sub par / average players that can go before we even think about selling our best CM

Xhaka wants to go
Holding
Tavares
Pepe
Cedric
Elneny
We need to sell these guys anyone else not so much

Kegunner

Why would you support the Arsenal. It is purely for the love of the game. Arteta gets it. Havertz gets it. Can’t wait for the next season.

Josip Skoblar

Now, if we could sign a lethal No9, we’ll be champions.

Spanner

I realy want to say the fee for Rice is way too much but, he has just done a 5000 minute season.
Rarely subbed or injured and only picked up 5 yellows despite being one of the top interceptors around.
Our massive problem in the past has been the stupid goals conceded and lack of concentration leading to those goals be it first minute or last.
I think Rice addresses that.
Hopefully you won’t have to see Gabriel forced into his trademark wild decision making now.

TallestTiz

Another reason Arsenal went this high for Rice was also to send a statement out.
Brighton and Caiceido camp will feel silly that we’ve not even coughed at them this summer. Deal with us when you have a deal on the table else we fu.ck you off.

Shakthar Donetsk, their lousy chairman and Mudryk camp too will learn that it was just about value.
We didn’t see value and experience in their player so next time when we tell you this is the limit, you’ll trust us that’s the value limit.

Nice one Eduterta and Garlick

Josip Skoblar

Rice’s fee is steep, but in the end, it is better to spend £100m on Rice than on Mudryk. 😉

Gooner63

I think Partey will go, it’s the only way we can get some money for him, I think we will look to offload a lot of players in order to bring in a LB and a 3rd DM, then depending on how the season goes for Jesus or Eddie, next summer will be about a top striker

Bilbo

Serge, to maintain and refresh a squad it sometimes involves selling good players as they’re the ones people want. It’s tricky selling shit players that don’t play for actual money. Walcott aside.

The bard, yeh leaking bids makes sense if you have the replacement in Situ. Otherwise you just get rogered on the back end when Fulham want 75m for Palhinha etc

Mr Serge

Bilbo then sell Eddie as we have Bologan there is 40 m right there

But we’ve already spent the 156 mil we got for second place in the prem. If a player has the ability to influence games on their own I think it’s justified. I like Havertz as a player and hopefully Arteta can help him improve his ability to have more influence in the final 3rd of the pitch especially from a creativity aspect. If we are honest , Maddison would have been less of a risk and 25 million cheaper. With Maddison he basically guarantees you goals and assists at a rate that is 2nd only to Debruyne, and that was playing for a team that has just been relegated. If we look at the last 2 seasons we will find that statistically Maddison blows Havertz out of the water and for… Read more »

Don’t forget, odegaard isn’t arsenals creative lynchpin. We have multiple outlets throughout the system. Madison at Leicester was probably their main creative force so he will naturally post better outputs.

Maddison could have been the best alternative to Odegaard. He is far better. Moreover, Maddison has a lethal free kick potential.

Partey for captain

Mysticleaves

Think Madison would have fit better with Arsenal if we were replacing Odegaard, now that I have thought about it. Havaerts will not be required to contribute much on the ball or when we are in possession. His major remit will be more like a conduit type player and then finishing off moves via later runs into the box. More like McAlister did for BHFC. So in that regards his striker instincts will come in very handy. Maddison prefers the ball at his feet like Odegaard to either create or score. So even though Madi has better stats than Ø… Read more »

Once Rice and Timber are done then we shouid bid for Gvardiol

He would be great to put in our defence but main focus is to disrupt City’s plans and at least to ensure they pay more

We’re paying over the odds for seemingly all 3 of our new guys BUT the difference I think between this and previous cases where we paid a lot of money is our squad is already quite close and these are all cherry on the top type signings so that we don’t only have quality but depth. Rings a bit of Liverpool when they blew the big bucks on Allison and VVD. Our core is there and very good. Havertz is an upgrade on Xhaka”

How? Not even same to having the same skill set.

It’s amazing how players go from “being shiite” when they play for someone else and then all of a sudden they sign with us and “winner’s mentality” , “love this signing’ lol

Timber a good singing.
Havertz is meh.

Rich

The average time a player is on the ball throughout 90 minutes, is just 2 minutes, so what they’re doing for the other 88 minutes is absolutely vital. Maddison is 27 is November, Odegaard is 25 months younger, and Havertz 31 months younger. Young players don’t always improve, but with talented + committed players, there’s always a good chance that they will. The better examples would be to use Maddison’s stats between the age of 22-24, rather than comparing him with 2 players who were 22-24 in the last 2 seasons. But even then, goals are important, but it’s not… Read more »

Sometimes it’s good to be honest. The Havertz signing is one odd piece of transfer business, particularly when Maddison was available for as little as £40 million

raptora

Pau Torres on his way to Villa. While I don’t rate him particularly high as a top class defender, he is good. Emery is forming a good team there.

We should bid for Caicedo once Chavs present Brighton their first offer just to do them dirty like City did with Rice.

G

Hope we go for Lavia now as Timber also looks like being done..

Rich

Rap Absolutely, at best we sign one of the league’s best midfielders, and stop him joining a rival club, while future-proofing our midfield. At worst we make them put forward more money, and blow up more of their budget. It’s likely we’ll sign another midfielder who can control + dominate large spaces without the ball, and further add more physicality to our midfield. If we’re moving to a more structured 3-2-5 in possession, then Caicedo would give us excellent options in 3-4 positions within that structure. Rice, Caicedo, Timber, Havertz. Not sure I’d buy that argument of comparing ages. What of systems, development curve and environment? Some people develop earlier than others both physically and mentally, some find permanent and settled environments earlier than others, some play with better players etc. No 2 players have the same race to run.

raptora

Rich: “Then we should be able to commit more money forward to complete this type of summer window.” I’m not sure how things work exactly but I would assume West Ham put a deadline on the Rice deal – June 30, because they need to balance some books before July 1, which I assume is the beginning of the new fiscal year (could be totally wrong about that). But by that logic (if it’s a correct one), then we’ll probably be done with both Havertz and Rice before July 1. I read a piece by John Cross who says we’re… Read more »

Mystic Valid points, but 24 – 25 is usually a good age for central midfielders and central defenders. Whereas attacking full backs and wingers often breakthrough earlier, but also regress at a younger age. The space is usually out wide, and central areas are usually more congested, so experience, clever movement, first touch + close control, are the first requirements. Players in central areas can often extend their careers into their 30s, but you don’t see many flying wingers or full backs into their 30s. I’m completely fine with people not rating Havertz but can we at least stick to some facts here.
While his Chelsea stint was underwhelming they did want to offer him a new contract, which he declined, so maybe the ”Chelsea reject” label isn’t the most accurate one.
Also, his fee was 60m and if he flops at Arsenal it will remain 60m in all likelihood, if the pattern of our transfer negotiations holds.

Real Madrid worked on the Havertz deal for months in silence and were waiting for right time to pounce. Juni Calafat was sure he would play a leading role. Player was approved by Ancellotti

They felt his price would drop as they had a good relationship with Chelsea and whilst Madrid was his priority, Havertz was very excited about Arteta
