INJURY CONCERNS MOUNT

by .

Ok, so David Dein has a new book… and get this, the bits that I have read, are really good. I also have a friend that has read every sports book penned and he’s halfway through this one and already loves it.

The thing I’m enjoying about it is getting the additional context around some of the major moments in our glorious history. David will tell you how a deal went down, he’ll go deep on the challenges of the moment, and he’s not trying to sugarcoat anything.

I suspect some of the decisions he made towards the end are weighing on him, but for me, intentions are always the most important part of big decisions. Reading this book, there can be no doubt, the man always had the best interests of Arsenal FC at heart.

If he’d stayed on after his abrupt exit to manage the Stan K transition, I think he would have recognized the shifting sands, and moved to bolster Arsene with a better coaching staff, he’d have invested in a technical director, and I’m sure we would have seen bigger investments during the years Wenger didn’t want to spend cash that was clearly sitting there.

… alas, history played out differently, but for me, David Dein will always be a key architect of the greatness we see today. A visionary for his time, gone from the game too soon, but no doubt proud of where this current Arsenal side is today.

You can buy the book here.

Talking about the past, the stories of Arsene Wenger coming back have bubbled up again. I’m not massively fussed either way, though I do think it’d be good for him to lay the past to rest and get engaged with a team he thinks can contend the title.

Arsene should move into a figurehead role. He represents a winning period of the club, he still has an amazing reputation, he’s sharp, and he’d be a pull for any player that knew he was around Arsenal.

Arsenal take on Brentford early tomorrow. This game is dangerous. They have scored 15 goals this season, 1 more than Arsenal. We know they are physical, boast players that can kill us, and if we’re not 100% they will cause us massive problems.

There are unsubstantiated rumours that Odegaard and Saliba missed training. That would be a concern. We could potentially be minus Zinchenko and start-worthy Partey. That’s 4 players that make us tick not available. It’s quite annoying that these injuries are following us around. But I do think it’s more down to luck of the draw right now than something more structural.

… well, that’s what I’m hoping in a post-Shad world. Get them out the way before our BRUTAL October.

Regardless, whoever starts tomorrow should be enough for Brentford. We have a good squad, the momentum is with us, and as Thomas Frank rightly points out: We are the second best performing team in the league behind City this season.

Short post today, but know this: There’s a good Patreon below where we talk about Utility players vs Versatile players. The debate of the age.

We’ll also be on the whistle tomorrow. So subscribe to the Youtube below.

Arteta masterclass

Dissenter

What a wired yellow
He’s been allowing all those fouls to go unchecked all game long.

MidwestGun

Looks like the kid who mows my lawn.. haha Hope he gets a touch at least.

georgia boy

Queefy ref today

Rich

This guy doesn’t even do his GCSE’s until July

GD4

One foul and the ref cards Jesus.
This guy is a horrible ref

LoveSausage

Let’s make sure the kid scores now.

Take that sunderland bite my ass

Gonsterous

15 year olds these days look so fking old. What happened? Lmao.
Good luck to the lad though

Habesha Gooner

Fantastic performance. Kudos to Arteta. The only game that we lost is a game we didn’t deserve to lose. And if we had Partey that game wouldn’t have been a lose if Partey was there. 6 out of 7 is a fantastic start. Now we just need that No 6 in January and our season will be minimum top 4.

georgia boy

Get that kid on a squat rack with marquinhos stat

LoveSausage

This was a defensively perfect game. They didn’t have a sniff at our goal. Amazing result.

raptora

Big Bill Saliba was my MoM. What a player! Absolutely superb.

GD4

What a performance.
Take a bow Arsenal.
Beautiful game in spite of biased ref.

MidwestGun

Well we handled our business… Saliba .. been motm for me.. dude is so smooth on the ball.. never worried and makes good decisions. Plus that goal.

2 weeks and NLD!!! It’s on!

Samuel

WE ARE WINNING THE LEAGUE

LoveSausage

Saliba is so good. He just takes the edge off any situation that would be stressful otherwise. We need to extend him asap.

Jonko

Brilliant performance ..hope Jesus is fine

Dissenter

We managed this game excellently
Brentford are a decent team, more so at home.

Their manager hyped us, prepped his team to take care of us and we still lived up to his hype.

Rich

Brilliant team performance.

Saliba my MOM as well, Partey + Xhaka also excellent.

AFC Forever

Takes time to build a team. It wasn’t long ago we had a bunch of ageing players who didn’t give a damn. Fuck me, what a change under Arteta. The club deserve credit for their patience because Arteta is a shrewd tactician.

That was a masterclass of how to nullify a physical team with an excellent home record. Didn’t give them a kick. I love this Arsenal team, scary to think it’s only a handful of games in development.

TitsMcgee

Good response.

The kind of response that inspires hope that this squad is cut from a different cloth.

Plenty of rest now before the NLD to add to the rest we just had for the Queen’s passing.

Dissenter

Honestly, I’ve never understood the hype of MOTM. It’s a team game after all.

So many players put up 8-9/10 performances so effortlessly. That’s why we strolled out with a win.

Karsa

Great performance.

Saliba and Xhaka standouts for me.

LoveSausage

Also worth noting that Arteta broke the manager of the month curse! We really are going places.

gnarleygeorge9

A stroll in the park, a stroll in the park, Ivan Toney, it was a stroll in the park😂

Ishola70

Excellent win considering how some were wary of this game beforehand.

tbh I thought Brentford were a bit meek and stood off us too much but that can be a sign that they were scared of Arsenal today so that’s a good sign in itself.

Comfortable, very comfortable.

G

We look like a proper team and that’s all down to Arteta.. when he joined he must have thought.. I don’t want most of these players.. so rebuild needed and what a job him n Edu have done

Northbanker

Fantastic game and FV even stepped up to the plate second half. That was a cracking goal

Really impressed with Xhaka today

Leftside

Wonderful win with some good performances. Buzzing.

P Saker

2nd goal:

As soon as Arsenal regained possession, I could feel as they began moving the ball around that it would end with a goal

McBright is Wright

Just saw that Jesus goal. My word, that has got to be the best Arsenal team goal these era. Cool and intricately detailed. Arteta welcome.
Someone..anyone…FV is gonna be Santi relived. What a goal.
The less said about Sali, the better. Boy is on fire.
Great team.

Madhu

Great performance and great result. Top of the table still and also recovered from the man u loss.

P Saker

Just got to be careful with the gradual accumulation of yellows for some individuals.

Unfortunately, that is not always in the hands of the coaches or those individuals, as the referees can be inconsistent, even within games.

AFC Forever

G

Totally agree.

dSidstathopoulos

Players that can are direct like Vieira/ESR is what we need in the playmaker role.

McBright is Wright

Arsenal beginning to have the X-factor…’FEAR & RESPECT’ from teams. We just need the Refs to get off our backs.

AFC Forever

When you hear pundits praising Arsenal, you can tell in their tone how troubled they are. Jimmy Floyd predicted a tough day for us & even at half time he’s hoping Brentford come good. As for Spud Redknapp he’s unable to smile as he speaks, trying hard to to show his disappointment.

Our fans giving Toney both barrels, love that. Saliba and Gabriel made him look the overrated big head he is. The ‘he’s only fifteen’ chant was just rubbing it in more. Lovely.

AFC Forever

*not to show

David.D

What an unbelievable performance. Should have seen keys and gray at half time. They looked so deflated. Spoilt their narrative. Cunts the lot of them. Fucking lovely to come and shut those Brentford cunts up after last season. Had to do it on their ground for proper revenge. The goals were beauties. Love the way Jesus angles that ball in Just beautiful. Saliba is just class personified. The way he played himself out of a sticky situation to get the move started for Viera’s goal was sublime Good sign that he has started to talk up Arteta as well. Get… Read more »

A winning team is mostly consists of plug and play players. FV showed that today. For his first start and second Epl game, that was class.
For Saka’s sake, he should rest A bit me thinks.

David.D

We needed to make a statement AND WE DID!!

Kelvin

For those still doubting Arteta. Guadiola tried to warn everybody.

S23

Superb performance,Brentford is a very difficult place to win at,yet we tortured them with a Wenger like performance.
The only negative for me is Arteta’s use of the subs-Eddie could have got 25 mins at least,Sambi was ok,big gulf in class from him and Partey at the moment, that will hopefully change with more minutes on the pitch.
Fantastic result.

Kelvin

Was in and out of the game as I’m at my own birthday dinner with family and friends Great result. I thought we seemed a little labored going forwards in the first half as we were missing the dynamism and movement of ode. It was a bit too static going forwards. Two brilliantly taken goals tho and saka should’ve added a third to kill the first half Second half I missed most of it. Sounds like vieira scored a nice one 3-0 is a great result after the Utd game. I will take that ALL day. Salibas goal was awesome.… Read more »

A lean mean evergreen machine

kjelli

a nervy affair before the kick off but made to look easy with great work-rate from Jesus and his
teammates !! M. Arteta my man of the match..

Chris

A comfortable win which is something we shouldn’t overrate. It’s been a while since we consistently navigate such tricky fixtures with ease. All credit to the team and staff, today was very much a banana skin, and we bounced back after the Utd game.

To be top of the league going into October, you gotta say that’s a great view.

Always dread the NLD like we all do but it’s going to be a brilliant spectacle

Rich

Happy birthday 🥳 China

Just imagine I’m Pedro right!
Told you so will be the song on my lips
Tips were there, just couldn’t see through them.
Vindication is a bit*h.

The passing was quicker today Brentford couldn’t handle it, we recovered the ball well.
Must win the big games particularly the NLD.

Little mozart

If only we could have another Partey we need to have him wrapped in cotton wool.

Topside Northbank

Superb controlled football.

Great result and a clean sheet very welcome.

What a day for Ethan Nwaneri 15 years old making a PL debut.

GD4

Don’t care what anyone says about their quality or record.
To win at Brentford with a depleted squad is a bloody damn good performance.
The lads were immense aside from our total lack of contribution from our wide players.
Hate that the bloody international break is coming right now.
Hope everyone comes back healthy cuz we are not deep in quality

Nigel Tufnel

Kelvin, I’ve seen that Pochettino interview and it really should get played more .. considering when he said it, and also the fact that there was no motivation for him to be praising Arteta… you can tell its really what he thinks. The Pep clip has a little motivation as a friend, but he’s been clear that he thinks Arteta is special.. certainly he wouldn’t have hired him otherwise. But what do Pochettino and Guardiola know compared to Pierre? They should comment on his training methods. I bet that both managers tried to buy Joe Willock, but he was holding… Read more »

What a performance! Checked my heart rate at the beginning, was 120. Dropped to 75 after the second goal. Well done boys. COYG!

Topside Northbank

Ref gave a very soft yellow for Jesus he’s on 4 already so sooner or later he’s going to cop a 1 game ban when he gets 5.

I watch too much football at weekends tbh but similar fouls just a routine free kick.

Tierney was stretching a lot at the end be interesting if he joins the Scotland squad or not.

Saliba for a 21 yo CB plays with total calmness, super talent.

AFC Forever

I hate Scousers. Love to see Everton get relegated. .

Cheers Rich birthday actually is tomorrow but celebrating mine today since I share birthdays with my son so tomorrow is all about him 😁

In a bar in shanghai with a nice maccallan 12 and arsenal top of the league after a 3-0? That’s all I could ask for!

Rich

Hopefully Jesus can get through until Chelsea, then take a deliberate yellow in the last few minutes, he can then sit out the League Cup at home to Brighton.

G

Hopefully Partey can get through the internationals

Spot on regarding Pochetino’s comment, same thing that came to my mind at first. Hopefully the rest of out fanbase rally around out gaffer and his boys. Something special is brewing and am up for it.

If Fofana is worth 70 mill, then Saliba is a 100 mill rolls Royce player.
We need to extend that lads contract ASAP.

Partey was the best player on the pitch , with Saliba a close 2nd.
Partey was immense, keeping him fit is vital for how our season pans out..

Peckobill

Wow , arteta in his presser saying saliba only had one training session in ten days due to some discomfort. That boy is immense

Pierre

Arteta hopefully will learn to trust his fringe players a little more..
Vieira, Lakonga , Eddie, Marquinos and smith rowe look ready to fight for a place in the side.

A nice 2 weeks rest for many of the players is ideal, we should be fit and firing for the home game v Tottenham.

Credit to Arteta for turning around our away form, there looks a nice balance in the team.

TitsMcgee

Probably get some pushback on this but Saka needs to be rested/benched. I think he has a place in the team and i know he got two assists against his name today but he’s clearly regressed this season. There is much ballyhoo about his pace but that’s straight line speed without the ball. With the ball he’s nowhere near as fast and once he gets the ball he tends to go sideways and often dribbles himself into trouble. He also tends to not hit his shots cleanly as well. Much potential there but I think he needs to be managed… Read more »

I wouldn’t drop Saka, I think with these young players ie Trent as well there standard is so high that any drop off is noticed.. some games he’s been ok ie old Trafford

SimpleWay

I still think away games against physical teams KT is the better option at LB. Also, without the calmness and grace of TP in midfield away from home, we get over run in midfield.

englandsbest

Best of all the conversion rate. From chances created, mostly either goals scored or saves made by Raya.

Marko

Vieira was fantastic today I thought he showed that he is a very good option and could be more than a worthwhile option off the bench

WengerEagle

Great result, didn’t get to see the match but will watch the highlights later on.

Jesus scores again and is nice to see Vieira break his duck. Saliba is going to be a huge player for us and could be the ‘signing’ of the summer along with Jesus.

WengerEagle

HB China.

Marko

Saliba is such a talent though. Absolutely huge potential and already playing to a pretty high standard

alexanderhenry

We’re winning the games we should be winning and doing it in style.
You can’t ask for more than that from the squad.

Also, there have been a lot of new signings that have had to bed in very quickly.
Overall, I am very pleasantly surprised and hugely impressed with arsenal this season.

Our next two PL games are Spurs and Liverpool.
These are two games we might not be expected to win even with home advantage.

Both are real tests, and if we can prevail could we start to think the unthinkable?

LoveSausage

Feeling really good about the next two games. We’re the real deal this season and the boys didn’t let the sucker punch vs United get to them. We could very well get 6 points from the next two.

salparadisenyc

Controlled performance what a totally unusual feeling. Partey truly elevates the level in mid where it needs to be to compete with bigger sides. Would love to see a depth signing for him get in much like we did w/ Fabio Vieira to the business end of the mid. His versatility will be so useful as season rocks along. Could of easily been 4 or 5 nil had we been more clinical. Again the refereeing was pretty week for me and could of cost us had they gotten one back notably on that the Martinelli foul – dive that went… Read more »

WengerEagle

I am confident too LS but our record at Spurs just like at Old Trafford is horrible.

We lost won there in the PL in 2014 when Rosicky scored that banger and even that day we were outplayed and lucky to win. Having Partey available is absolutely pivotal because if he is not we will lose the MF battle and likely drop points.

China1

Yeah I hope this result silences those who lost their minds at the Utd defeat Yes it was a painful result. Yes it was a 6 pointer. Yes we could’ve done a bit better. But as much as we want to win every single match, losing an away game against a big 6 team is the least embarrassing way to lose. Meanwhile we’ve beaten *everyone* else in our path including a couple of banana skin teams. We’re going into October top of the league despite city having an even better squad this year than last. If we beat Spurs in… Read more »

WengerEagle

Jesus has been near flawless for us so far barring a little wasteful in front of goals.

7 PL apps, 4 goals and 3 assists and the highest Whoscored rating in the squad with 7.78 which is joint 2nd league-high after Haaland (8.13).

LoveSausage

WE,

We usually win at home against that lot. Granted, they looked very good yesterday but we should still have enough in our toolbox to get it over the line. And Liverpool have lost the fear factor completely. Still a very dangerous strike line but we should be able to hold on to ball this time around.

China1

Aside from the apparently good goal, how was Vieira in the second half

In the first half I thought he was tidy but still felt we missed Ode a bit

WengerEagle

LS

Didn’t realise it is at the Emirates, you are right I fancy us to beat them so.

The return fixture at their place is on my birthday (Jan 14th). Would be the stuff of dreams to get a ticket for that one.

LoveSausage

WE,

So you’re going to have either the best or the worst birthday of all times. I don’t envy you, my anxiety is usually at 110% for a full week before an away NLD.

LoveSausage

China,

I thought he took up better positions in the 2nd. Played more centrally instead of crowding the right side and he was involved more. I still didn’t think he contributed to our press. Didn’t matter today because we dominated them anyway but could have mattered on another day. Something to work on.

Northbanker

I’m with LS on this although I think we were the only 2 saying that – others apparently saw him playing a blinder in the first half

Ishola70

Horrible start to the season for West Ham.

They even managed to lose to Notts Forest.

The boys Moyes and Rod-gers being found out.

G

‘’ alBoth are real tests, and if we can prevail could we start to think the unthinkable?

If we won both I’d start thinking of 2nd …
Wouldn’t b too disappointed with 5pts in next 3 games

Pierre

I thought today’s game was our most impressive performance of the season taking the opposition into account.

Brentford away is a tough game on paper but we controlled it from the first minute to the last ,which is a credit to the way Arteta set the team up….

Arteta is noticeably not so excitable on the touchline now , which I’m sure is better for the players, maybe he trusts them now and doesn’t feel the need to tell them every pass to make and every position to take up on the pitch.
