TUESDAY DROP

by .

It’s a late one from me my darlings.

Can you believe that journo with the hot take, who I do NOT follow, blocked me when he was spanked by the internet for his terrible views on referees?

If you want to be a bang-average contrarian, don’t block people who challenge you, not because my feelings are hurt… because it makes it look like the sauce you are offering up is room temperature Tesco’s mayo. Don’t be that guy.

So what do we have today?

Liverpool couldn’t beat Crystal Palace at their place. They dropped a 1-1 draw. Palace should really have escaped with a win considering some of the chances Wilfried Zaha had put on a plate. It was quite amusing that Darwin Nunez was sent off, Paul Tierney didn’t want to, but a double headbutt is hard to ignore and he didn’t have Mike Dean in VAR to back him up.

I thought it was interesting that Paul Tierney hadn’t managed a Liverpool game since Klopp went nuts about his performance against them when he didn’t send off Harry Kane for a ghastly challenge but sent off Andy Robertson.

Do Arsenal have refs taken off their account when they make disgraceful decisions? Or is that just a Klopp thing?

Rumour is Mike Dean has been taken off VAR duties this weekend. Like, what is the point here if he’s back the week after? Shouldn’t the question be: What do we do about a retired referee that thinks a hair pull to the ground isn’t violent enough?’ Sack him would be the answer in any other job. But referees aren’t held to performance standards and there are never consequences for their actions.

Arsenal have two wins under the belt, we’re second in the league, joint top for goals… and we’ve all stopped talking about transfers. Some are saying there will be no movement unless Granit or Pepe move. I’m not sure we’re moving on Granit this season, he’s playing too well, and Mikel clearly loves him.

I think we’ll go big on a winger and maybe wait on Tielemans. I really struggle to see the Belgian wanting to go to United, that’s a lot of pain to opt into, even if the money is good.

It was interesting reading around some of the commentary post-Spurs game. I thought they were very average and they were gifted goals because of officials. Their problem, outside of overreliance on two players, is they are very predictable. Their poor play was largely down to Chelsea knowing exactly what was coming. That will be a problem against a lot of teams this season.

Chelsea were VERY impressive… worryingly so. If they sign a striker that isn’t Auba, they’d be the favourites for 3rd this season. The football they offered up was fast, direct, and controlled. They just have a lot more experience than us at the moment. Having Kante and Jorginho running your midfield with Silva and Koulibaly in defence is a LOT of experience.

That said, older players get injured more, so we always have that.

I originally thought the top 2 was decided, now I’m wondering if the Liverpool are in play this season… maybe that thought is a little hopeful. But hey, we can dream dumb, right?

Gabriel Jesus, new fan favourite, reckons his bad spell for Brazil as a #9 and the move to the wing for club and country fooled him into believing he was NOT a striker.

‘I went back to being the usual Gabriel, thinking that I’m a 9, that I’m there to finish, to help, of course not just to score goals.’

‘I went back to being what I was before, I am no longer that robot that used to be there.’

I am down with this. My hope is that his emergence as a #9 will get him some love at the World Cup this winter. He’s been sensational. I LOVE HIM.

Ok, short post today, let me come back with something new tomorrow.

Pedro,

Kante was taken off injured – if only to reinforce your point about older players.

Then again, I read that ESR and Vieira didn’t train today. Our squad is a little bigger but still only a couple more injuries away from being too thin.

I think/hope/pray we get another body in midfield. Tielemans would be great. But I would be happier with Neves because he is a natural in Partey’s position if needed. Of course, Ben White could probably do a job. But it isn’t his natural position.

You do love the word ‘dropped’ don’t you Pedders?…is it to be down with the kids? 😉

MorgyC

Long time reader, posted once or twice before.

Was at the game Saturday and it was bouncing – far better than the result of our first game at home last season (was also there and against Brighton 🙁 )

It seems that we should learn our lesson and buy when we’re playing well to mitigate in advance for Partey’s long term injury, Xhaka’s suspension and the tiredness that will hit our wide players

Nigel Tufnel

Pedro,

I don’t want to get too excited, but the fact that pool dropped points against 2 weaker teams, one at home… puts them under a lot of pressure against City already, that will only make it worse… and we will take take points of them too this season.

Leedsgunner

If Referees were asked to give a reason for their decisions after the game, like players and coaches do soon after the game, it would immediately focus their minds on at least trying to make the right decisions.

Sure, it’s not perfect but I think it would be a step in the right direction… that is in the direction of accountability.

I repeat, it’s not a perfect answer. However at the moment, referees and their union, PGMOL, actually bring the game they supposedly know better than anyone else, into disrepute.

Leedsgunner

Plus, I know the ‘outrage’ at the moment is the hair pulling on Cucurella but things like this happened to us last season too. Off the top of my head, the way Saka was taken out completely needlessly versus Palace at home and the stamp on Tomiyasu? Isn’t this cheating too? We watch a game that can catch pretty much every thing via multiple camera angles but only the word of a half fit breathless person who missed it the first time in real time as any force. I know why this is, but at the elite level, where every… Read more »

Leedsgunner

Apparently Leicester needs to sell before they buy.

If we want Tielemans – would they be tempted by a player plus cash deal? Say £15m for AMN seems fair…

Why I Gunna

Don’t know how many times I have to repeat myself but we need serious cover or rotation for Partey. We all know what’s coming down the pipe sometime. It derailed us last season and it’ll do it again this one. There’s a fair bit of love going round for Tets right now but this is sheer idiocy or negligence that this hasn’t been addressed. Then again, we’ve seen time and again that Arteta doesn’t rotate the team so maybe there’s no point to what I’m saying

Samuel

Our upcoming run seems very decent on paper. Bournemouth, Fulham, Villa, United, Everton, Brentford and then finally Spurs. We should be in and around the top of the league when we play Spurs if we stay injury free.

The Bard

Glad you’ve realised Chelsea aren’t the basketcase everyone thinks they would be post the Russian. It leaves very little wriggle room for 4th spot.
I’m my opinion we need a couple more players in the window.

Bob N16

Next season, assuming PL success in Europe this season, the top 5 will qualify for CL in the PL so this season Willa arguably the hardest year to get into CL. Quality wise I don’t think it’s presumptious to suggest that we’re already one of the top 16 teams in Europe with our upward trajectory clear to everyone. I’d like to think in the next two weeks we’ll finish our business by bringing in two more players. If this happens, as long as we’re not unlucky with injuries, I think we’ll have lots of fun watching our team this season.… Read more »

Bohley has approached the window in a very interesting way. Good post Pedro, greatly appreciated. The previous post in regard to the refereeing was also top notch my friend! Pepe to Nice is a move I like; they are a good upcoming team, and it gives us a chance to have him playing games in an environment he loves. Very possible to get upwards of £25 Million for an inform Pepe next summer. He can’t sit on the bench for another year and play 10 mins here and there its not the best use of an asset at all. Granit is staying, its clear as day he is going nowhere.… Read more »

This transfer window has a sense of last-minute preparation pre-WWII. Fortunately Arsenal preparation began a year or more ago, we are ahead, well-equipped, modernised. Some of our foes are creaking with aged weaponry (Man U, Liverpool) others with new leadership are following our footsteps (Spurs, Chelsea) and a newcomer (Newcastle) is playing catch-up.

Cease the moment – Man C or Arsenal

Rich

Pepe is a talented player, but it’s obvious his race at Arsenal is run, we’re determined to get him out, so we can bring in another wide player. Yeremy Pino’s name keeps popping up. Not many 19yr olds bang in the PL in their first season coming from foreign league’s. I don’t know the player, but his defensive stats suggest he might offer more intensity + aggression off the ball, that Arteta demands of his forwards. As long as we don’t get any sustained injuries, we’d be able to ease him into his environment in the cups at first. But… Read more »

For all of the good work in the transfer window so far, we are a Partey injury or suspension away from an El Neny- Xhaka midfield.

DigitalBob

Rich – Agreed, I like Pepe and really wanted him to do well, but unfortunately he’s not the right fit for Arteta and so will never play, best to move him on when a viable offer comes in. I’m also not really familiar with Yeremy Pino, I watched Villareal a few times last season and he wasn’t exactly standout, but the quality must be there for him to be in the Spain squad and featuring regularly for both club and country at 19. It does mean we could potentially have both Fabio Vieira and Yeremy Pino as two high risk/high… Read more »

Digital Bob We obviously don’t see how players are training or behaving, and I can understand why Arteta has reservations about Pepe off the ball. But I don’t understand the Pepe thing, he finished strongly in 2019/20, played in the FA Cup final, and looked like he was beginning to settle. Then we unexplainably signed 32yr old Willian on a 3yr contract, but Pepe again finished the season strongly, with some good performances + goals in 2020/21. A lack of Europe and getting kicked out of the FA Cup third round hurt his game time last season, but he was… Read more »

Seen Gouri mentioned earlier. Big fan of him, fits our model too given he is 22, he can play anywhere across the front 3 and he has all the technical ability and physical tools needed to succeed in this league.

“Cease the moment – Man C or Arsenal”

Cease – To stop, to bring to an end, to discontinue.
Seize – To take hold of, to grab forcibly.

Thus concludes ironically, today’s English lesson for englandsbest.

It will be really interesting to see what player(s) Edu and Arteta will bring in before 1st of Sept. The hottest names in the media are: Pino, Neto, Tielemans, Caicedo & Tonali Then there are some other names that have been popping up: Hudon-Odoi, SMS, Neves + others I can’t remember… I for one can’t select any two I prefer… If I would have to choose two (winger + midfielder) I would pick: Pino & Caicedo (or Tonali). The longer the Tielemans transfer drags it feels like there is a priority to find a player able to rotate with Partey.… Read more »

Rich – yep great breakdown! It really did look like the way he finished the 2020/21 season he was going to be a great option for us, his finishing and confidence seemed sky high. I’ll also add he had a very good AFCON and seemed to be gaining that confidence again but as you said maybe a lack of application in training didn’t exactly instil confidence in him from the manager and at that point its over. I’d pass on pino

We have plenty of young prodigy wingers already. If we’re replacing Pepe it should be with a player who is good but also very consistent, not another project player who needs years of regular games to find their feet at this level

Leedsgunner

Wenger Eagle

If OGC Nice is bringing in Nico Pepe to supplement their existing attack, they will probably bat away all attempts on Gouri. I suppose then Edu could try to convince them that Pepe could be a ready made replacement.

I mentioned Gouri earlier, but I seem to remember you like him a lot… can he play on the wing?

Ray+in+LA

regarding the ref situation

I’m wondering, if there was a grass roots campaign that promoted refs being interviewed after the game…

maybe couched as giving them an opportunity to defend themselves 🙂

maybe couched as a fan-friendly feature to boost the post-game viewership

post-game ref-interviews would go a long way to adding transparency and accountability

most fans could get behind it and together we could pull it off — as the reversal of the Super League demonstrated

WengerEagle

Yes Leeds he can. LF is his most regular position but he has played as the focal point at CF and he can play RF too.

Very versatile and gifted player. He came from Lyon’s academy I believe and is extremely highly rated in France. His playing style has been compared to Benzema’s.

WengerEagle

Gouri can be that guy China

22 and has produced 2 full seasons in Ligue 1 with 38 G/A which are impressive numbers for a 20-22 year old.

I watched Nice a decent amount last season largely because I was interested in how Galtier would do and was most impressed by Gouri. Also really like Delort the ST but he is 30.

DigitalBob

Weagle – Yes Galla had all the technical ability to be a top CB, but that attitude was a bit more than questionable! I never understood why he felt the need for the number 10 instead of the available number 3 at the time, it was clearly a sign of the difficulties to come!

Refs!!!
I think they’d shit the bed if ordered to explain themselves on camera. That would be Gold tho, especially on acid.
Realistically tho , I don’t see why their manager shouldn’t step up and face the media after each round. A la Klipperty this week…. I’ve now seen it , I haven’t spoken to him yet , but rest assured I’ll be kicking his ass presently, or words to that effect. He is class tbh.

Rich

Whoever we go for it’ll be a cog in the system, over an impact player who can’t do both sides of the game, and doesn’t provide intensity + aggression off the ball. Saka+ Martinelli’s starting positions are both usually towards the touch line to provide width, and drag the full backs wide. This creates overloads centrally where our 2 No8s now operate, Jesus has license to roam all over the place, but often drops deep centrally to create the overload in the first phase of play We’ve began seeing Martinelli + Jesus interchanging at time, with Jesus drifting out to… Read more »

Martinelli if he keeps up this form is a guaranteed name on the XI. As is Jesus, Saka, Partey, Saliba and Ramsdale (by default).

There’s usually a different price for Arsenal than there is for Brighton, and there’ll be a different price for United than Arsenal, particularly now when everyone knows how desperate they are. Buying in the PL is expensive if clubs aren’t in a week contractual position, because staying in the PL is worth £100+ million per season. Selling a player for £50 million can see that money wiped out overnight if clubs are relegated as a result, and have really bad consequences past that point. The biggest problem in the squad by far is Ramsdale.

Simply not good enough if you have title aspirations. He might even undermine a nailed on top 4 position.

(The back up goalkeeper also does not look too clever.)

Pope now of Newcastle was a missed opportunity.

Edu should be looking for a 6ft 4 goalkeeper for the January transfer window. Ramsdale would have worn out everyone’s patience by then

Bats The reality is that if a player doesn’t want to be here, they want a change of scenery, and their contract is running down, then we’ll definitely sell. There’s no way we do what we did with Alexis again, when we turned down £60 million from City with 12 months left on his contract. Saka hasn’t even turned 21 yet, if hypothetically we put him on the market tomorrow, with 2 years left on his contact for £120 million. To be clear, I’m not suggesting we sell Saka, my point was as long as he’s happy to stay, he’s worth potentially more to us on the pitch, than accepting a bid of £120-£150 million.
