ZINCHENKO ARRIVES + SALIBA NEW DEAL CLOSE + MYSTERY WINGER

by .

Sad news to kick-off this morning, legendary Arsenal supporter, Maria Petri, has passed. She was the loudest voice at every game, she was totally dedicated to The Arsenal, and loved her club more than anyone. What a character. The outpouring online is quite something. Genuinely deserved, Maria was such a lovely human.

Onto the football…

Things haven’t really moved much on the transfer front.

Fabrizio Romano said that Arsenal will sell their players for proper prices and that might be why there’s some delay. He also keeps reiterating that there’s a surprise winger on the horizon. When your game is gossip, I’m at a loss why he’s keeping it under his hat, but there we are.

Out of Italy, we’re being linked with Arthur Melo. There’s rumours that he might be part of the most depressing deal of the summer with Torreira going the other way. Some outlets are also reporting we might go back in for a loan. I cannot get excited about this one. I’d rather buy on a perm deal and I’d rather the midfielder we sign be Youri Tielemans over someone that has tanked at Barcelona and Juventus.

Freddie Paxton, new to the Arsenal goss scene, seems to think that the deal for William Saliba will end on a high note.

Wow.

If that’s the case, you have to hand it to Edu and Arteta, they’ve done some BIG work there to get that over the line. Matt Kandela thought the player would ride it out and see what his options are, which makes sense when you see PSG give Mbappe the keys to the castle. But for me, there are two sides to that game, Sammy Umtiti broke himself, he went from a top 5 center-back in world football, to failing a medical at Rennes. There’s a lot to be said for guaranteed money in the world of sport because you never know when a knee might blow out, or someone with a knife will jump you in London. Life comes at you fast, you gotta make sure you have those benjamins in the bank.

My hope is he signs a 4 year deal with us with an option for another year so we can sell him if he doesn’t want to re-sign. Overpay him a bit, make him feel rich now, show him we love him, then hope he lives up to the outrageous billing he has.

My word… our back 4 is rapidly turning into one of the most exciting in European football. This time next season, when we’ve made moves on our back-up right back position, it’ll be one of the tastiest in the league and the average age will be about 25 years old. That’s 5 seasons of players at the top of their game. Incredible stuff.

We’re still waiting on Bukayo to sign his new deal. I suspect that we’ll wait until closer to the start of the season for that announcement. Give the fans and the players a big boost. Head into a very hard Friday night game against Palace with our new KING secure for the next 5 years.

Zinchenko is confirmed. This is what Arteta said about him.

“I know the player really well, he’s an exceptional footballer and he is someone that is going to bring as well another competitive edge to that dressing room.”

“He can play in both (defence and midfield). He was a natural No. 10 early in his career and we converted him into a left-back which can do a lot of things that we want in our way of playing.

“That versatility is something that is going to be important for the team because we have players in that position who are more specific full-back so I’m really happy.”

Arsenal fans, if you campaigned that Zinchenko was going to replace Xhaka, you may be suffering galaxy brain.

Occam’s Razor wins out.

Zinchenko is coming to give us a left-back option that offers build-up play. That allows our 8s to push forward, it means we don’t need to drop a midfielder into left back. It opens up the pitch and allows us to be more explosive with our attacks.

Edu had this to say:

“I’m very pleased to see how we’re working as a team here in the club. We put a plan together early and Oleksandr Zinchenko was a main focus on our list. We’re pleased to have Alex with us now because he has the attributes which I’m sure are going to put our squad at a different level.”

Sounds like he was the primary target, which makes sense, but damn… did we just use Lisandro as a smokescreen? Ruthless.

Arsenal has a press-resistant back 4. 5 players that can pick out 60 yard balls. 2 fullbacks that can invert. Pure character in every player.

It’s a great place to be.

Right, that’s all I have today.

Cant see Torreira and AMN being part of Artetas plans this season. We need cover for Partey

Emiratesstroller

Yes Zinchenko has signed for Arsenal. Just received email from club confirming transfer.

I agree with Pedro that the rumours about Melo are depressing. Why on earth are we pursuing
a player who by all accounts has been a “pain in the arse” at both Barcelona and Juventus and
whose playing time last season was virtually nil.

The idea that we are offering a fee + Torreira who according to Transfermarkt is worth more
is laughable. Juventus should be paying us to take him off their books!!!

I do think our next 2 signings will be from premier league I got a feeling it’s Pedro Neto and teielemans

On holiday in Strasbourg. Still made the bench. How sad am I ? 😁

We are on track but need one or 2 centrally. I’d take Tielemans but completely envisage that Leicester will be difficult with us over this since we all remember when we went in for Vardy and in a similar sense to what happened with Suarez we were laughed at so if there is a deal to be done we need to do it properly. I’d like a striker with some height too to give us extra options and it’s disappointing to hear that West Ham are allegedly in advanced talks with Scamacca. However maybe the propaganda surrounding our earlier interest… Read more »

Pedro I would be shocked if Zinchenko isn’t bossing our midfield alongside Partey (hopefully) a few months from now. Cream rises to the top and he’s a Rolls-Royce midfielder. However, if Tierney isn’t fit to start the season then it makes sense for Zinchenko to come in at LB and it should be easy for him to acclimatize quickly. This isn’t about galaxy brains-it’s about having one of your best players play in the position that he prefers and which he excels in for his country. It’s the same reasoning that had us move Saka up from left back to… Read more »

bacaryisgod

As for Lisandro Martinez, I doubt it was a smoke screen. Maybe the plan was for Martinez to come in at LB or CB and Zinchenko to come in at LM and as a break glass option at LB?

bacaryisgod

As for Arthur Melo, I think everyone would prefer Tielemans but I won’t be complaining if we go for the cheaper loan option after what we shelled out these last two summers so far.

Besides, maybe we’re waiting for Bellingham after one of our fans very boldly told the Kroenkes to act like a big club! Love the balls on the guy even if there’s only a remote chance of getting him.

https://metro.co.uk/2022/07/21/josh-kroenke-responds-to-arsenal-fan-asking-him-to-sign-jude-bellingham-17044526/

For me, getting Tielemans would make it a perfect summer and getting Melo would still make it a great summer.

Johng

Please let the Melo rumours also be a smokescreen. I think that deal would end up like the loan midfielder deal from Barcelona (forget his name) that was a total wstd of money

Johng

Oh yes Dennis Suarez take a bow

Emiratesstroller

Bacaryisgod

Arsenal have until now made some excellent transfer business, but the idea that we are interested in recruiting Melo is depressing.

I appreciate that Arsenal want to get Torreira off the books, but a swap with Melo + paying
Juventus money as well is ridiculous. Torreira’s market valuation is higher.

Why on earth do we want to recruit a player who played hardly any football last season.
His track record at both Barcelona and Juventus was piss poor.

bacaryisgod

Pedro guilty of Biden-levels of over-hyping ahead of this coming season. Don’t forget the golden rule is under promise and over deliver!

bacaryisgod

Emiratesstroller

I just can’t get depressed after we’ve already signed G.Jesus and Zinchenko along with the exciting but lesser-known Vieira.

I don’t know how much more there is to spend this summer so while I might not like it if Melo comes, we’re essentially just trading a frozen out disgruntled Torreira for a player who might just surprise us. He’ll probably end up more like Dani Ceballos (or even worse Kim Kallstrom) than Yossi Benayoun but if there’s no more splurging available then I’ll keep an open mind.

Thierry Martinelli

All positions have close to capable deputies apart from Partey and Saka.

Zacharse

wow he looks good in the away kit. feeling deja vu. big season ahead

Rich

Bacary

Call me greedy, but providing we can get the players, I want three more signings.

Centre back, No8, + Versatile right winger /forward.

Then tie down Saka + Saliba, and we’ll be in our dressing gown + slippers, smoking pipe….

Karsa

I don’t expect we’ll get Melo but, as bacary says, he couldn’t give us any less than Torreira.

Here’s hoping for someone a little better however.

Thierry Martinelli

A proper ( good player who can sit on the bench 😂) to step in for Partey is needed. Saka’s absence can be handled by tactical changes or seeing that we have a clutch of offensive players.

GD4

We still need a solid defensive midfielder.
Why we still have Chaka on the team is a mystery.
Play Alex next to Partey and let the good times roll. Xhaka only holds us back. No more passengers please

bacaryisgod

Pedro Fair enough. I took the L on last summer’s net spend so I kept my mouth shut before this window opened. I wouldn’t be surprised if Zinchenko is out last major signing and you could maybe read something into Edu’s comments about singing him being central to our transfer strategy. I would love to be wrong, though. The keeper position is still a worry. There was an excellent opinion piece on Ramsdale as the rumours were building about us signing him, and the goalkeeping analyst pinpointed Ramsdale’s poor positioning on exactly the type of goal Orlando scored against us.… Read more »

this is cute, evidently good ol frimpong and zinchenko played together at zinch’s first pro club- frimpong tutored him in english:

“He never paid me for my work,” Frimpong would later tell Sport24 (via The Independent ). “Write that Zinchenko owes me.

“We agreed with him that he would pay me when he left. I usually charge $2,000 an hour but he is my friend, so there is only $1000 for him. I spent so much time on him! Tell him it’s very important.”

Topside Northbank

Don’t see us going for Melo at all if it was going to happen would of done in January loan with option.

I would like at least on e more midfield signing but with the Raphinha bid earlier in the month you would think that is where we are looking.

Outgoings you sense will happen late in the window European clubs pleading poverty small fees recieved. Leno, AMN, Torreira, Mari, Bellerin and Pepe all look likely departures permanent or loans.

Freddie Ljungberg

Links to Cody Gakpo starting to pop up again.

Can play across the front three, tall, technical, scored a lot of goals in Holland. Wouldn’t come with a crazy fee or wages. Could have some legs if we’re looking for another winger.

Northbanker

Marquinhos will be Saka’s understudy. Hutchinson took one lookat him and realised he had no future at Arsenal. He will be our surprise package of the season

Northbanker

If we get Melo instead of Tielemans I will be severely pissed off.

It still amazes me we were prepared to splash £34m on an untried and seemingly underweight Vieira and don’t go for the vastly more experienced Tielemans at 25m or 30 tops.

Emiratesstroller

Nortbanker

You could apply your description to Messi, but I don’t think that you would find many who
post on here who would not have been prepared to pay £200 Million in today’s market if that
player was in his prime.

Most reports suggest that Vieira is a very talented footballer and the President of Porto was
exceedingly upset that he was sold so cheaply. So lets wait and see how he turns out.

Marko

Secret winger? Who knows but here’s hoping for a secret RB too or a secret second CM coming in.

Gommit

Vieira is a Saliba kind of signing. Get it done while possible. Apart the deal with Saliba is that he was so young that he is “homegrown”, which is a huge plus.

If Vieira continues his development he is out of reach for us next summer.

Gapko and Tielesman and this is a perfect window. Please stop talking about Melo like that is a possibility, will never happen

Northbanker

Emirates – yes I read all those at the time and I will be willing him on to becoming a success. My problem isn’t that we bought him but we signed him it seems in preference to getting Tielemans and paid a higher price to do so. It is far more likely that Tielemans would get us into the ECL than Vieira will next season

Northbanker

Gommit – we get Gakpo and Tielemans and I will be seriously celebrating – but Tielemans has got to be the priority

Dissenter

Zinchenko is a massive signing
Better to sign a 5’9 versatile player than can play LB and midfield excellently than to buy a 5′ 9″ central defender who can deputize at LB.

Fate has been kind to us. I would have been underwhelmed with Lisandro and Raphinha.

We can’t even complain about leaders in the team. We have at least four international captains already; Zinchenko, Partey, Ode and Xhaka.

Dissenter

Am I the only one who’s noticed that these City imports are talking about winning titles.

Jesus mentioned it…and now Zinchenko is dropping those lines casually.

Dissenter

Pedro
I didn’t say we wont spend.
My point was that our spending was going to be tethered to outward transfers, not the volume of spending.
The ;point still stands because our squad is way too large.
I couldn’t t have imagined the Kroenkes would go. crazy

Un

It also means of Tierney is fit e can drop an 8 and let our full back overlap which will electrify ESR
No coincidence his best form centered around Tierney being fit while he played on the left of our attack
Depends if it’s ESR or martinelli on the left for me

Un

If* he is fit

Jaffa

Really pleased we got Zinchenko and not one of the other names we were linked with.. Premier league knowledge and experience means so much. A bargain in my opinion.

Habesha Gooner

I am glad Zinchenko is finally confirmed. we have 6 potentially very good to class players, one okay player and another we have to move on next season in our back 4 now. I think one of Tielemans or Paqueta is coming in and that will be our window wrapped up. how many players we sell on for how much will be the cruicial factor on which one is coming in. Leno and Tavarez wil move. i think Torreira, Niles and Nelson will move for cheap too. There is a huge chance Pepe will stay. Bellerin will move for a… Read more »

Diss

Loving the positivity + ambition from Jesus + Zinchenko.

We’re getting closer to assembling a squad that can compete at the very top, still need 3 more players.

But from there, we’ll be at Cherry on top stage of our squad building.

Topside Northbank

Scamacca going to WHU it seems just over 30m be interesting to see how he settles if it gets done.

Italian players in the PL seem more often than not really don’t settle that well.Chelsea back in the day buying three very, very good in players Zola, Vialli and Di Matteo all together really helped off the pitch as well as on.

Ravenelli 17 goals in a season but amazingly Middlesborough wasn’t quite so much of a paradise off the pitch.

Marko

Mari to fener seems to have legs. Thank fuck absolutely useless signing

Topside Northbank

Just seen Arteta on sky sports news- Zinchenko is mainly a left back, but can play other positions.

Gilberto Silva also interviewed if we could find a young version of him would be a great addition, very underrated.

Just had Sophie from Highbury Squad podcast on sky also giving a mention of Maria very classy of her to get that in, she was Arsenal through and through.

Rich

Marko

Would be a right result if we could sell Mari, weird signing, who’s been nowhere near the required level.

The sooner we clear the deck, the sooner we can turn up the quality.

Mari to Fener seems to have legs. Thank fuck absolutely useless signing.

yeah apparently Jorge Jesus wants a reunion with him. Tavarez is being seriously linked with Atalanta and Brighton too. We are haggling on Leno but I think that will happen too. so that is going to be three out. Nelson, AMN, Bellerin, Pepe and Torreira left. Still a lot to do with outgoings.

bacaryisgod

Topside

Still stand by my earlier coment. He’ll be starting in his preferred midfield before the season’s over.

Habesha Gooner

Zinchenko is a LB this coming season no question. By the end of this coming season though that might change. Xhaka might leave and Zinchenko might be the competition for that new CM we are going to bring in this summer. and we might bring in another LB next summer. that way CM would be sorted.

next summer it will be LB/CM depending on Zinchenko, DM, and a RB and may be a GK if turner doesnt cut it.

Topside Northbank

Bacary

I agree midfield also but we all know much of that depends on Tierney and his fitness which we all know he misses too many games.

The drop off Tierney to Tavares and the opposite flank Tomiyasu to Cedric killed up last season. Ben White rb for me as long as Saliba and Gabriel are fit.

bacaryisgod

Mari is definitely a decent player. Unfortunately, like Rob Holding, his lack of pace gets exposed too often at the elite level. His first major injury for us was as a result of getting absolutely burned by Kyle Walker (no disgrace tbf). It’s here at 19 seconds on this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Dxu8n9EhfM

He’s a good passer of the ball but just can’t play a high line as he’s got no recovery pace. However, he’s definitely going to contribute for a mid-level team.

Mike

Am I missing something? Why all the depression over Melo? Has a single reliable source mentioned this or just the usual click baits? It doesn’t sound like a (new) Arsenal signing at all.

Topside Northbank

Mari a player that is better suited to three cb’s and a less intense league.

Lukaku actually looked good in a game last season against us up against Mari, mind you must of got a bang in the head the night before and thought he was Drogba up against Senderos…..

NJ Gooner

Rabiot in the guy we actually should want from Juventus. I think that he’s on the last year of his contract. Give me him and JamesWard Prowse and this will have been a fabulous summer.

Zinchy signed. This has been a fantastic window. Filling our squad with league winners will just make it easier for us to coast into the CL and close the gap on City and Pool. Wonder who this mystery winger is…? Anthony of Ajax? Mousa Diaby?

Rich

I don’t think we’ll sign a deep lying midfielder, we’ve got Partey, we renewed Elneny, Zinchenko can play there. If we sign Tielemans or similar, then Xhaka isn’t going to be a regular starter in that advanced 8 position, Xhaka at deep lying midfield is less of an issue, with the athleticism + power of Saliba, Gabriel + White behind him, Xhaka in terms of getting the ball up the pitch is very good. Sambi isn’t ready to play a single pivot in the PL, but he could do it in the early rounds of the Europa. White has played… Read more »

Yeah so long as we sign up good pros without self-destructive attitudes who lead by example on the pitch without any drama. If they are EPL ready great and if not it may take them 6 months or so to adapt. Recruiting players with a winning mentality certainly helps and I’m sure that the data analysists are doing their bit to ensure that we bring in players which will potentially add value and put us in the mix. Rabiot is not a bad shout but he won’t ride the bench for Xhaka. Nah not that dude.
If Pacqueta and Tielemans are on the planning ledger I’m still wondering why the rush to pay so much for Viera.
Really confusing signing.
If Don Raul was still here I’d be screaming Shady shady

GD4

I must admit that I never really rated Zinch when I watched City. Thought he was weak and frail plus after Mou targeted him in that special All or Nothing and he proved him right .. my doubts grew. However I’m willing to give him the benefit of doubt especially after reading the anger from City fans on their forum for his departure. Home fans know best so keeping fingers crossed

Le Sauce

Rich Your 22:18 comment is gold. That’s clear why Arteta was building his team from the back although I don’t agree with White for £50M (Saliba is proving to be better value for money atm). Having very good ball playing CBs puts a lot of pressure off the lone 6 thereby pushing the team forward and congesting the playing space for the opponents which in term enables good counter press in case the ball is lost. I like the technical profile of out backline and I need a Tielemans type to replace Xhaka some we can be more press resistant… Read more »

That 4th centre back is essential, because one weak link, alters the entire team dynamic, both defensively + offensively.

I like Holding, but if teams see him creeping towards that halfway line, they’ll either press high, or fancy their chances over the top.

Josko Gvardiol would be the dream, but expensive, can play left centre back, and inverted left back, and would add to the versatility we’ve been targeting in players.

He’d be a game changer for us.

This to me would be a highly competeitive side.. with lots of options off the bench. Tierney, Marti, Xhaka,Vieira and hopefully a Pepe replacement.

This is the dream for me.. seems to me we are very close to making it happen.

Also, people keep stressing about Keeper dudes.. we won’t screw up the season because of the Keeper.. chill. We have had some incredibly bogus keepers over the years and still finished 4th or above.. Ramsdale and Turner aren’t garbage. Sheesh.

Rich

Arsenal are 3 players away from having a squad that can compete for the title + cups simultaneously. If we can end up with something like this, then we’ll be a threat to City + Liverpool over the ne tfewseasons, this season will probably be a bit early, and I’d expect us to come up just short, but we should certainly expect to be in the mix, with 3 more top signings: Ramsdale, Turner, Hein Tomiyasu, Cedric Tierney, Zinchenko White, Saliba Gabriel, Gvardiol Partey, Elneny Tielemans, Xhaka, Sambi Odegaard, Vieira Saka, Zaha Martinelli, Smith Rowe Jesus, Eddie .…….…Ramsdale …….Saliba Gvardiol… Read more »

A new midfield signing is being held up by two spinners in the works, resigning Elneny to a one year extension and the presence of Xhaka. Arteta likes them both, Elneny for his ball security and Xhaka for his progressive passing. In addition both appear to be good influences in the locker room. If either weren’t with Arsenal this season I suspect Tielemans or Paqueta would be signed by now. But they are both still at Arsenal. Sometimes goalkeepers go through spells when they concede almost every time a shot is on target. Ramsdale had such a spell in the final 12 games of the season , conceding 50% of shots on target . It can be said that the keeper going through these spells is not to blame and has made no obvious mistakes. GD4

Pedro,
That was the same argument made about Pepe my friend.
League, manner of goals and assists always need to be taken into account rather than raw numbers my good man.
Viera is a luxury buy when we have pressing needs at the moment is all I’m saying

Nigel Tufnel

Rabiot… Lol…

With Arteta ….. good plan.

Useroz

Scamacca looks good on YT. But the thing is , assuming he’s good, why is WHU reportedly paying £30m or 40m whereas when Scamacca was linked with us, £60., 70m was talked about? So now we not only couldn’t sell at proper prices we are known to pay hefty premiums too? Because of some recent buys setting unnecessary precedents?

Habesha Gooner

I don’t think we will target a Winger now. I think Raphinha was an opportunity that Arteta and Edu saw that might improve us massively and they wanted to take it. But I don’t see a lot of top wingers going for decent prices so I think they will hold off on signing a Winger till next summer.
