PROPER LEFT-BACK ON THE AGENDA

by .

Listen, who tf is Lisandro Martinez anyway?

Too small.

Too ‘fancy dan’ on the ball.

HAS HE BEEN TO STOKE?

Not built for the Premier League.

Probably has a bad attitude because he’s 5ft9.

I didn’t want him anyway.

What I do want is a proper left-back.

Someone with the fighting spirit of a Ukrainian.

A player with high levels of technical ability.

An actual left-back that can maybe play LCM.

Someone that has won trophies.

A player that is mid-twenties that maybe feels aggrieved he landed similar amounts of minutes and Bob Holding.

I want someone that has tutored under a coach like Pep Guardiola.

Well people, my dreams MIGHT be coming true, because David Ornstein said we’re moving on Oleksandr Zinchenko for about £40m.

Now, jokes aside on Lisandro Martinez… he’s a top-tier talent with a high ceiling, but he’s coming from a slow league, and he’ll need a period of adaptation. The ceiling looks through the roof, but he’s not there yet. The money looks outrageous as well, £55m is the sort of cash only United would spend on a 5ft9 centre back.

I’m going to be real with you, Zinchenko is the player my head said from the start because we know what he can do. Arsenal needs to hit the ground running next season. Having a player that we know can get into the mixer off very few minutes is where we need to be.

You can spend your luxury car money on an Alfa Romeo or you can spend it on a BMW. One is a concept of greatness, the other just does what it says on the tin. Zinchenko is a BMW of a left-back. You know what you’re getting and it’s fucking great.

If this deal goes through I’ll feel a whole lot better about where the season is heading. Kieran Tierney is a top left back, but when he exits the side, we feel it and have done for 3 seasons. There won’t be that panic now. Maybe the Scot will think twice about risking his body in friendlies. Maybe the competition will help him raise his game to new heights. Whatever happens, we’ve added more robustness, additional flex to our defence and midfield, and we’ve upped the characters and winnertivity of the squad again.

This would represent some of the smartest business of the window.

I know this will pain some people, but signing an assistant from Manchester City seems to be working out for our summer so far, wouldn’t you say?

There are just two positions that need remedying after the left back, that’ll be a central midfielder in the shape of an 8, and a winger that can add goals to the frontline.

The central midfielder looks like it’ll be Tielemans or Paqueta. This kind of looks like a similar situation to the left back. Do you go with a player with a high ceiling in Paqueta? Or do you put your money on a tried and true Premier League with an international pedigree? I’m leaning into having players that can hit the ground running. But look, this is like choosing between ribeye or New York strip at Hawksmoor… you’re getting something special however you sway. Maybe you’re a fat bastard and you order both? Who knows. The Hawksmoor in New York is spectacular by the way, you should go if you get the chance.

There’s not a lot of noise with regards to the wide player. Raphinha moved to Barcelona, Sterling moved to Chelsea, the Bosnian rumour doesn’t seem to hold much weight.

I’m gonna throw it out there… Wilfried Zaha would be a very good signing for Arsenal. He’ll have a chip on his shoulder because that’s just who he is as a player, he has outrageous aggression, he always scores goals, he’s extremely direct, and he is a nightmare for defenders. The player has 1 yr left on his deal, we lack experience, he could bring that to the club.

Right, short post today, podcast with Matt and Johnny later. Hopefully some GOOD things happening in my life over the next 48 hrs. x

If Zinchenko comes then Tierney becomes the back up
I won’t be surprised if Arteta is still smarting from Tierney playing every single minute of two back-to-back friendlies for Scotland.

Guns of SF

KT – great fella. Spirit is great.
However, now I know he is not what we need as a starter. His injury record along with TP cannot be sustained for a season long campaign. They cannot be counted on. Zinchenko yes. His game is much better than the kick and run of Tierney

I do hope we are still looking for that tall striker we depserately need. Headed goals are much needed with our incessant crosses to no one

gnarleygeorge9

Can we just get Zinchenko, & Tielemans officially in, this trade period is now starting to do my head in🤪

TheBayingMob

“this trade period is now starting to do my head in”

This is exactly what’s fucking me off … can we just get it the fuck done please. I have never understood why these transfers take such an inordinate amount of time. It’s ludicrous.

Nigel Tufnel

Left testicle,

Too negative.. instead of complaining that we have easy ins with Jesus and Zinchenko, for example… maybe you’d realize that we all know the players really well because they’ve performed at the highest level for years…,
So they are guaranteed quality and won’t have to adjust to league.

Marquinhos may end up a great find like Martinelli….

Vieira is not someone we knew, and I can’t wait to see him play for us.

Why keep spinning everything negative?

Zambian Gunner

Together with the signing of Gabriel Jesus, Zincheko could be the most important acquisition of the the summer.

TheBayingMob

Barca, lol … and yet Raphinia was desperate to go there … what a shit show … and what a dumb cunt of a player

my prediction of artetas first choise XI next season (this is always so fun to do):

rambo
tomiyasu-white-gabriel-zinchenko

saka-odegaard-tielemans-smithrowe

that is some heavy stuff right there. I really hope it can happen!

WengerEagle

I think that Koulibaly is a downgrade from Rudiger too. Not a big one but a slight one nonetheless.

And he’s 31 and only had x1 year left on his deal. Chavs definitely overpaying for him as they are a bit desperate.

Tom

“We folded last season because of injuries to 2 key players, at the business end of the season, because we didn’t have the quality in depth, had Partey + Tierney stayed fit, I’d expect we’d have just edged over the line.” Losing Partey was big but it was the lack of goals that cost us in too many games, which is something we seem to be addressing now with the Jesus signing. I expect that’s not something you’re likely to admit having bragged how Laca, Saka, and ESR had all better g/a per minutes played than Tottenham’s Kane. Not to… Read more »

Jesus, Zinchenko and Vieira would be decent work for mid July.

A CM is crucial though, we really need x2 and to ship off a couple of our current CM players that aren’t good enough.

If we only sign x1 more player then it has to be a CDM. Ideally we sign x2 more and one of those a more offensive option, like a Paqueta.

Rich

We need 2 top players in each position. You don’t compete at the top of the game, in 4 competitions, 60 games, without 2 separate teams, of excellent quality…. If you don’t have that quality in depth, then that’s how seasons go up in smoke, at the business end of the season. Having numbers isn’t enough, we’ve got far too many players already, numerically we’re overstocked, it’s quality in depth + balance we lack. Zinchenko + Tierney competing would be excellent competition, the only concern would be Tierney’s injuries. Let them fight it out, hopefully the competition will push them… Read more »

I think we should test Napoli’s resolve and offer €25m for Anguissa.

They only paid €15m for him a year ago and he is PL proven and an excellent enforcer. Imo he is a better player than Bissouma and he is the same age.

I also like Sangare a lot but think that PSV would want a lot more than €25m for him, more like €40m.

WengerEagle

Agree Rich, we have way too many players on the books. 33 now if Zinchenko is signed before anyone leaves.

We need to get rid of:

Bellerin, Nelson, Torreira/Xhaka, AMN, Mari, Leno, Pepe.

And Lokonga, Tavares and Balogun all need a loan.

Habesha Gooner

We aren’t signing a DM now. Unless Partey isn’t in the clear, I don’t think another player that plays a No 6 role is coming. A CM (an 8 or a hybrid 8/10 player) is coming in though. It seems like Paqueta is the genuine target and Tielemans is the backup target.

We can expect a LB and CM to come in. The right winger will depend on market availability. A DM isn’t coming in though. Partey’s situation is the only thing that can change that.

Mr Serge

Pete not sure we are buying zinchenko a cm and a winger no way we are probably getting zinchenko and a cm at best which is still great

WengerEagle

I don’t think that we’re bringing in a wideman.

Maybe they have faith that Marquinhos is ready to step up. Or we can’t get rid of Pepe, he is adequate back-up for RW.

Karsa

I think Marquinhos and maybe Nelson will be the wing cover.

Zinchenko and at least one other in midfield is a necessity.

Rich

TT You can’t be surprised that I make the argument for our own players, over any Spurs players, particularly Harry Kane, I was always taught you stand up for your own… I never said I didn’t want us to sign quality in January, my argument was from a “numerical” standpoint I would have kept Chambers just as a body, not from a quality standpoint, even though he was an ok player, but numerically it left us short at the back, we let him go when we knew Tomi was injured, and Chambers could cover 3 positions. Do you think Mari,… Read more »

Tom

“Zinchenko + Tierney competing would be excellent competition, the only concern would be Tierney’s injuries.”

Would Zinchenko come to compete for minutes at Arsenal when that was his main complaint at City?
Possibly, if they double it triple his wages, but I’m sure that’s not a phrasing either Arteta or Edu would use trying to convince him to join, compete for minutes that is.

Mr Serge

Rich our backup was in large not good enough for last seasons run in and Eddie came in too late

Zfree

Agree with what a few others have said – I don’t know that Zinchenko pushes KT… I think he starts over him. Be interesting though, to see Zinchenko play outside that absolutely dominant city side, maybe he’ll look different having to track back and defend more.

englandsbest

Not optimism, just.simple arithmetic. Numbers.

Something like ten players will be leaving, either sold or on loan. So far Arteta/Edu have added five players. That leaves 5 to come in.

Tom

“You can’t be surprised that I make the argument for our own players, over any Spurs players, particularly Harry Kane, I was always taught you stand up for your own…”

There’s trashing your own while bigging up others, and there’s acknowledging we have special players on our hands(Saka, ESR) who for obvious reasons aren’t quite at Kane’s level just yet.
Shouldn’t be too difficult for anyone who’s gone past puberty.

Nigel Tufnel

“I just have a bad feeling that ESR is going to be the one marginalised in all of this. Imo he is arguably our best player when in rhythm, him or Saka.” ESR is marginalizing himself. Never, ever can put in 90 minutes, Arteta says he can’t even train him as much as he’d like during the week. Martinelli tracking back, tackling, efficient work rate puts Emile to shame. Marti has earned all of those starts. Still annoys me that Smith-Rowe was only partially available for most of the season, but went off starting for the England youth squad a… Read more »

You can’t be surprised your Harry Kane wankathon, goes down like a shit sandwich, on a pro Arsenal blog…

Tom

“You always seem to have good things to say about other clubs, but positive praise for Arsenal with you seems in desperately short supply.”

Arsenal crest over the odd looking chicken standing atop a basketball any day.
Will this suffice, Rich?

AL

“Agree with what a few others have said – I don’t know that Zinchenko pushes KT… I think he starts over him..”

Agree, no way is Zinchenko coming to sit on the bench and wait until KT gets injured to play. Arteta would bee in his ears by now and surely that’s not what he’s told him.

Rich

If we want to be competitive, playing 3 times a week consistently, 60 games across the season. Then we need 2 quality players in each position, and a few of those players with need to be versatile Having the option of Tierney or Zinchenko, would be quality, as long as we can keep them both fit. This isn’t a problem, this would be a good thing. Last season when Tierney got injured, the issue wasn’t that we didn’t have a backup, the problem was that Tavares is currently nowhere near the required level, he might get there, he could develop… Read more »

If Zinchenko is brought in as the only mid… I’d be very worried that Arteta might continue with Xhaka most games even if he knows Zinchenko is better. We need a MF that will force his way in to start most of the time. Someone bought as a premium CM. Not depth. I think we’ll get someone but won’t be satisfied until he’s in.

Koulibaly is a clunky player big downgrade from Rudiger for me, love to see it. Still many questions yet to be answered in this window notably the wideman, think we’re certainly going to try and pull more goals in. Always was under impression Marquinhos would potentially go out on loan or be used in league cup action to open the gate. Raphina bidding indicates we’re not done yet. Wenger Eagle.

What do you make of Carney Chukwuemeka of Aston Villa?

Kalle

If we can do this deals, then our midfield ceases to be our weakest link… Zinchenko (I know he’s more of a leftback), Paqueta and Carney all in. Xhaka, Torriera and Niles all sold while we find a good team to send Lokonga to more exposure, most preferably an EPL or top Championship team.

Naija+soccer

Heard somewhere Zinchenko has never scored for Man City. If thats true then I really hope we are buying him as a left back and not signing him as our LCM over an end product guy like Paqueta. Getting both players is the ideal scenario

Emiratesstroller

Rich As I suggested to you previously there will be at least 7-8 departures before the start of season and there are probably 2-3 vacancies in the squad. However, our squad in the second half of last season was inadequate and not fit for purpose. We offloaded 7 players in January and the squad was down to 21 players [just 18 outfield players]. The reason behind that decision apart from cutting cost was that we had only around 16 fixtures left to play for the rest of season. Unfortunately the management did not factor in Covid, Injuries and even Red… Read more »

Chambers offered a body, if we don’t replace him, it could come back and bite us. Balogun isn’t quite ready, we should have sent him out in August to develop. Zinchenko and Tielemans is the smartest way we could spend our cash if we are just signing two more players Might not be the most exciting or expensive but two very good PL players who can improve our starting 11 immediately playing in top priority positions and neither will cost that much. Reports city only asking for 25m not 40m for zinchenko Also Zinchenko is a very good crosser of the ball. Hello,

I wanted to know the price for Zinchenko before making this point. Can’t we buy Cucurella from Brighton? Why are we helping City to clean their money?

Samesong

Zinchenko in midfield with Partey would be good.

Habesha Gooner

I don’t want Zinchenko as the CM. We need a more established and more tested and reliable CM. He can shift to that over time, but not now. If we are thinking longterm then he can play as an 8 when Xhaka leaves next season or after that. And we can bring a new LB. But for now he must be signed as competition for Tierney.

Samesong

Habesha

I can see both Tierney and Zinchenko in a 4-3-3 but I get what your saying. Are we actually going to buy that midfielder is also the question?

Mr Serge

Samesong I think we would buy a cm and zinchenko I don’t see a wide player coming in until we sell those 6-7 players though we have a few sub par players that need to go

Divine – initially I was thinking competition for Tierney, but given the reported fee is closer to £40 Million and Zinchenko is already rotating at left back for City I reckon he’s coming in to play LCM as he does for the national team.

I think this is the role we wanted Lisandro Martinez to play if we landed him.

I just can’t see us spending £40 million on a backup for Tierney and then spending another £40 million on midfielder, unless Granit is leaving or unless Tierney is being demoted to backup.

I don’t think it’s necessarily a case of zinchenko taking anyone’s position, rather a case of bringing in someone who can offer something different to what we currently have depending on the opposition and who’s available. If Tierney is injured we have cover. If he’s not then we have someone who can drop in as a second dm and can he the ball in tight spaces. First of all we lost out on a top 4 place last season not because of our attack, albeit losing Aubameyang without replacement did present a problem. The reason we missed out was because our defensive resources were inadequate. We lost 5 of our last 8 games in the EPL and conceded 18 goals.
