TRANSFER STRATEGY AND PLAYER TIERS

by .

I leave England for a few years and Liam Gallagher in #1? What is going on? Did he sing ‘You can’t always get what you want?’? No? Was that the Stones?

Well, that’s how I am feeling right now.

The winds of Ornstein seem to be blowing very hard in the direction of Arsenal making moves on Gabriel Jesus.

So come in close and listen up…

…I will delete every piece of smallman slander I ever penned about the Brazilian if he joins and you will never, ever, hold me accountable to a single word of it.

Are we clear?

Good.

Gabriel Jesus is a winner, he’s great in tight spaces, he can create out of nothing, he’s electric, and he’s still young.

Do I think we’re missing a trick not having a single striker at the club over 6ft tall? Absolutely. This feels a little bit like the years when Wenger was very insistent that you didn’t need tall centre backs when we were leaking from setpieces. Or the time he filled our midfield with eighteen #10 talents.

But, does a Gabriel like player help you break the deadlock in more games next season? I’d say so.

This is one of those moments when we have to accept that the best way to scout a player is probably to spend 3 years coaching them every day. Arteta knows the talent, he knows the potential, he might know what’s missing from Gabriel’s game, and he knows the character.

Let’s see where the story goes, but the winds of inevitability seem to be moving his ship south at the moment.

That said… Italian publication Repubblica reckons we’re properly in love with Scamacca, we’re offering 35m euros, the Italian club wants 50m. The negotiations are entering a ‘hot phase.’

Arsenal insist on Scamacca: the blue striker has been in the crosshairs of technician Arteta for months and contacts with Sassuolo have become frantic. Inter likes Scamacca very much – with whom they have an economic agreement – but the situations related to Lukaku and Dybala have put the negotiation with the Emilian club on standby. Especially since the demand is very high. The 1999 class really appeals to the London-based company, ready to invest in the 35 million euros. Sassuolo continues to ask for 50 and the negotiation, in the coming days, will enter the hot phase. Arsenal is also very interested in Osimhen, but the 100 million requested by De Laurentiis (Newcastlar alone has come close to this figure) are deemed excessive by the Gunners, which do not exceed 60 million euros.

I don’t ever trust these stories because Italians travel worse than McDonald’s with Uber Eats. But if I was to be sexy and suggestive here, I would say that this chap is a very good Tier 2 option after we’ve missed out on more fancy targets.

Clubs will have tiered options when they go into a window and they’ll be negotiating multiple options at the same time.

Here’s an example of some tiers.

Tier 1: Vlahovic, Tammy, Oshimen

Tier 2: Scamacca, DCL, Alex Isak

Tier 3: Hlozek, Mitrovic

Tier 1 strikers will come at greater expense, with more guarantees, but they’ll have competition for their signatures.

Tier 2 strikers will have profiles that look very similar to Tier 1, but they either don’t have a long enough track record to know if they are top class, or form players… or they are much younger. Scamacca has 3 seasons of first-team football, 2 at the highest level in Italy, and he’s gone from 8 goals to 16 in a season. He looks like Vlahovic and Tammy, but he’s higher risk.

Maybe we’re dropping into tier two this summer because Arteta would rather spread the goals load across more players. We take a hit on a tier 2 striker with a high ceiling and over-invest in a tier 1 winger.

Ben White was a tier 1 centre back for his age, Tomiyasu and Lokonga would have been tier 2 players. Ben White and Tomiyasu had very good seasons, Lokonga had a middling one. Nuno Tavares was a tier 3 left back and he’ll be out on loan next season. There are no guarantees with transfers, but the more money you have, the more you can derisk the chance the of failure by picking from Tier 1.

William Saliba, according to the oddballs in French media, is going to go on TV to talk about his future. This feels like the time LeBron James did a piece called DECISION over his future. Except it’s for a player that finished 2nd in Ligue 1. Like, mate, just get on with it and stop creating so much drama.

There are some DRAMA stories going off in the media, one of them is that Arsenal will only sign three players this summer because we don’t have Champions League.

Firstly, that wouldn’t be a disaster. The difference between finishing on 76 points this season and 69 was not having sufficient coverage in 3 positions: Striker, midfield, full back. We don’t need 7 players. Though we might end up with 6-7 new faces this summer anyway.

William Saliba should be added to the defence.

Ainsley might be given a chance at right-back coverage.

We’ve signed Matt Turner as back-up keeper already.

We also have a host of young players that are knocking on the door like Sambi Lokonga. Those players will get minutes next season. Don’t rule out one of them making the jump or there being a surprise package next season because more minutes are being shared out.

From there, if you added Tielemans, Gabriel Jesus, a back-up left-back we would have 10 extra points on last season.

I don’t think we’ll leave it at 3 players because I think we’ll move on names.  I don’t expect to see Nico Pepe here next season and I think there will be a move on a wide forward. There’s always a chance Kieran Tierney might move to another club if there’s a mega offer. There’s always a chance someone might come back for Granit Xhaka who isn’t getting any younger.

It’s really weird for anyone to write what Arsenal definitely will or won’t do when we’re working in a market that has a wild variance of possibilities.

No one knows the full plan yet, not even those at the club, because the market is ALWAYS unpredictable.

Bob From previous thread Terraloon, you’re not really suggesting that women shouldn’t have their own tournament? That’s absurd. If you extend that argument only men would get Olympic medals in athletics etc etc It actually was my daughters view and she didn’t see it as being absurd her argument was that unfortunately from a woman’s perspective was that to a degree it’s where the future could easily go if the debate about trans participation can’t be concluded to the satisfaction of all. But all that aside I don’t have the solution to the conundrum nor does it seems any sporting… Read more »

Hmmm

All I want is a Striker , Saliba in the back and a good CM option . 2 if Xhaka goes. A left back probably but I rather put faith in Tavares.

All of this is up for debate and far from a fact.

Tom

Terraloon, I have a solution, well , kinda…….I think if it would be easier for many men to stomach women getting same pay for less work and lower skill level in tennis grand slam, if they performed in two piece swimsuits………like the beach volleyball players on women side do.

Rafa already wears a thong he keeps pulling out if his crack before each serve, so its only fair

WengerEagle

It’s getting a bit silly that signings are not being held accountable to their transfer fee. People are saying go easy on Laca despite him being overpriced for £50m. I know that he is not in control of his transfer fee but you still grade the player based on it. Have that same energy with the likes of Grealish, Lukaku and Sancho if that is the case. None of them were terrible this season but for the fees paid they were all extremely underwhelming. And it is why Fernando Torres was destroyed by the media after his £50m Chelsea move… Read more »

Tom

Ben White had a decent season and Tomiyasu had a season to forget.
The former had very little influence on overall play, at least in context in which he was being advertised eg breaking lines and creating scoring chances.
Not to mention defensive mistakes there were a plenty.

And the latter played only 1700 total minutes for the club because of injuries.

If those two had very good seasons, then Gabriel ,with his five goals, had a monster of a season.

WengerEagle

Tomiyasu was better than White along with only costing 40% the price.

Tom

Weagle, Tomiyasy was very good when he played, but how anyone can describe 1700 minutes of total involvement as a very good season is a mystery to me.

Vintage Gun

Tielemans and Bissouma whilst moving on Xhaka, Torreira and AMN would work for me

A midfield three of Bissouma Party and Odegaard with Tielemans, Lokanga and Smith Rowe pressing them is a good mix. Quality and depth wise.

With El Neny as a cover note.

TeeCee

A good striker and CM, and someone who can cover the FB positions…..Hickey for example would be a great start. I think we still need another backup striker because Eddie and Flo are not scoring 15-20 goals a season. Saliba in the starting 11 would also be an upgrade on the current two…..or maybe a back 3 is a better option for us?

izzo

Southgate having an Arteta moment of galaxy brain. Weird formation and boring depressing tactics.

Havyn

What disturbs me is that since Edu came in we’ve virtually given away players and bought expensively. Fx dealers call it sell low and but high. Why? Lack of
negotiating skills since Fahmy left?

Vintage Gun

Bissouma- £30m

Tielemans £30m

Jesus = £40m

And if we can shift Xhaka, Pepe etc then-

Elite Wideman £50 (ish) (Or CF if Jesus is used wide left)
Hickey £20m

Total outlay= £170m

We must be able to recoup at least 60-70m through sales which if so would take our net spend down to the £100m mark.

Havyn

*sell low buy high

Havyn

Jesus is left with 1yr on his contract so his price is too high. He’s not a 15 goals a season player either. Too much noise being made about him. His goal scoring record not that great, we’ll be buying another Laca.

the two charts from the recent athletic piece on our striker targets are quite telling i think. jesus: scamacca: for me, that’s a no-brainer in favour of jesus, especially given the fact he is brazilian and that he has already worked with arteta. of course, i’d love us to be able to sign guaranteed goals, but the guys that look like they can bring that (osimhen, nunez) look out of reach financially. mitrovic would be a nice left-field addition for not big money. i have always liked the look of him and wondered why he has not been able to… Read more »

Watching women play football, I tend to think they got lost on their way to the kitchen or taking their kids to school. Unless they’re gorgeous to look at, of course. But that’s hard in baggy pants and muddy boots. Horse-riding is different, a hat and jodhpurs suits them fine. Swimming too, they look good in swimsuits.

Ishola70

I’m not sure Tielemans will sign to be on the bench a bit like the Zinchenko rumours.

Out of the two I’d prefer to take a chance on Zinchenko over Tielemans for central midfield for what I see as the real needs of the midfield if we are talking about these two players exclusively.

Zinchenko has had to have a degree of defensive awareness about him playing as fullback and he overall has good technique and is a decent footballer.

Ishola70

Zinchenko was actually seen as a No.10 when Man City first signed him.

So he has attacking instincts allied to the densive awareness he would have picked up playing as fullback

.A much more interesting signing for me over Tielemans.

And of course he can fill in at left back when Tierney breaks down again

.I think this would be an Arteta signing many could get on board with.

Ishola70

Jesus/Abraham and Zinchenko good signings for me.

We need to move one of Xhaka, Elneny and Lokonga. And we need 2 midfielders this summer not 1. If we go into the new season with just 1 bought midfielder, we ll likely regret in my opinion.

Scamanca looking decent against Germany. Gnabry will end up playing for our rivals.

WengerEagle

Scamacca is 6″5. Is he mobile at that height? Can hardly be.

raptora

Scamacca is Giroud which isn’t all that bad. Not going to be elite ever but could do the job. Read he doesn’t wanna come though so it’s whatever.

LoveSausage

WE,

Depends on what you mean by “held accountable”. I agree that a player should be evaluated in the context of his transfer fee and salary. However, I really dislike some of the toxicity directed at Laca. His career at Arsenal was underwhelming and he certainly wasn’t worth what we paid for him. But toxicity should be reserved for players who act like muppets or rest-and-vest, like Ozil.

This Scamacca guy looks decent on YouTube. Has anyone watched him play? If so, what’s the verdict?

Ishola70

WengerEagle
“Scamacca is 6″5. Is he mobile at that height? Can hardly be.”

He is mobile. He’s not a very heavy 6ft 4, Lithe physique.

Looks pretty good. Can hold up play, interplay and has an eye for goal.

I’d put him along with Jesus and Abraham as good looking signings.

Think of a young Morata when he first came on the scene. Similar.

And Arsenal have been signing players from less glamorous clubs so it could go through.

Ishola70

Or as Raptora indicates Scamacca waits for a Juventus or one of the Milan teams to come in for him rather than join Arsenal.

The players wish.

Danny S

Ben White has had a very average season! Show me one stat he has excelled in?
He was brought in apparently for his passing ability and and posted some very average stats in that department. Brighton also did considerably better post white.

Benjamin white is not tier 1. Never has been, never will be no matter how much legrove wills it.

Danny S

No one else in world football was paying 50m for white. Or even close!

WengerEagle

Wow, Morata is 6″3 ,there is a surprise. Terrible finisher but has always been very mobile.

He does look a slim build Ishola. 23 years old, same age as Eddie save a few months. 16 goals in Serie A, 8 last season. Not bad at all but not sure how much he moves the needle compared to Jesus or Tammy.

WengerEagle

Dzeko is another one too at 6″4 that was fairly mobile when younger. Giroud on the other hand always had a heavier and more cumbersome build.

LoveSausage

Based on White’s season we’d probably struggle to get someone to take him off our hands for more than 35M. A decent player but not even close to tier 1.

raptora

I’ve always rated Dzeko a little bit higher than Giroud. Always thought we could have done a bit better with him.

WengerEagle

LoveSausage

I didn’t see much toxicity towards Lacazette? I for one wish him well as he was a decent servant to the club.

Giroud was given a harder time than Lacazette who was always sheltered a bit with Aubameyang taking on the mantle of being the go to goalscorer for us. In the one season this year as main main he has really struggled and been beyond dreadful in front of goal.

Ishola70

I never saw Lacazette as a real striker.

I saw him as a forward that scored a few fair goals in the French League.

That he didn’t hit great heights in terms of goal scoring when he joined Arsenal didn’t suprise me greatly.

I appreciated some of his overall play and he was a decent quality player but of course he also let down on occasions.

WengerEagle

Ibra the king of tall strikers clearly but imo even he struggled at the highest level sometimes (CL knockouts) with his pace limitations.

Optimum height for strikers imo in general is anywhere from 5″10-6″2. Any taller and they run the risk of lacking pace/agility and any shorter and they lack physical presence and hold-up attributes as well as being no threat aerially barring freaks like Falcao.

Jesus is just below that at 5″9 but for me that ain’t a deal breaker. Same for Tammy who is 6″3 as he has genuine pace and agility.

WengerEagle

Always plenty of outliers of course with Romario being the most obvious one and from the modern era Sergio Aguero when talking pure 9s.

LoveSausage

WE, I was referring to some of the comments over the past couple of days. I think the fans generally appreciated his effort while he was playing. Agreed on Giroud. Always felt a bit bad for him. An amazing team player with fantastic work rate. I just think it was always clear that he lacked that final piece to his game and it drove the fans crazy. Some players flatter to deceive and make you think their ceiling is higher than it is. Even when they’re bad, they have moments that make fans dream that they might bang if only… Read more »

This makes no sense
Arteta and Edu know the full plan, they may not be in control of market but they know their plan, surely.

Why all these country football action at a time, when the players are supposed to be getting a proper rest.
UEFA, FIFA and all the greedy FAs everywhere will end up burning out footballers.

People surprised England were flat, why shouldn’t they be when they keep playing the same players through their exhaustion points.
If you’re going to be forced to play in June, take a B-team and let some players try to force their way into the A-team.

“Zinchenko a shit signing for MF as we don’t need another no10”

Who said he plays as a 10 now or will play as a 10?

He played as a 10 when he was a kiddie.

He can play central midfield.

The point about mentioning him being a 10 as a youngster is that he can offer attacking instincts from central midfield.

Zinchenko plays midfield for his country.

Tielemans is hugely over-rated as a cental midfielder. I’ve seen the game bypass him plenty of times when he is off the ball.

WengerEagle

Haaland a noticeable freak exception given he is faster than pretty much any other ST at present and is 6″4.

That kid was made in a lab.

WengerEagle

”Zinchenko plays midfield for his country.Tielemans is hugely over-rated as a cental midfielder. I’ve seen the game bypass him plenty of times when he is off the ball.” I don’t disagree about Tielemans but it is a bit rich to say that there is evidence of Zinchenko on the other hand controlling games from CM. He has nearly always been used as a fill-in LB for City. And he has looked pretty good for sure, we don’t know much more than that with the amount he has played mind. As for him beasting it in MF, I’m sorry but I… Read more »

Zinchenko’s scope as a player in midfield for Arsenal is more interesting and can reap better benefits for the team than Tielemans and in the longer term. I don’t want to see Tielemans. I’ve seen it all before with players like him. He does some good things offensively and the fan boys love him and then they ignore his weaknesses in midfield and believe me they exist and these weaknesses he has are already present in this current Arsenal midfield and have been for years so we don’t really address anything except admire a few Tielemans goals and assists. Danny S: You don’t get to watch the Arsenal much, especially last season, clearly

Please do not give me yet another passenger in the Arsenal midfield.

Tielemans ball watches when off the ball enough times. Can look weak off the ball.

No thank you.

Pedro. This is a site you use to reference players performances a lot. So where does old benny push the needle?

Also, Brighton didn’t miss him in the slightest!

Danny S

Ben white breaks the 50th percentile 8 out of 20
Of the metrics.

None of them by any great measure.

Danny S

Tier 1 player 😂😂😂

LoveSausage

I wouldn’t write Tielemans off as a “ball watcher”. A lot of it has to do with tactics as well and Leicester aren’t a pressing team. He’s a tactically intelligent player so he should be able to pick it up.

Danny S

‘Leeds, a club with no money, made a record breaking bid before the player proved himself in the Premier League.’

Pedro, remember when Liverpool paid 35m for Andy Carrol! 😂

Yeah because they bid that much that means he was world class.

Ishola70

Pedro

I have always said McTominay can do a certain job in midfield. Hardly slobbering.

A workhorse to go alongside a more gifted midfielder.

Your stats earlier about Tielemans are useless because there are plenty that see that Tielemans can be weak off the ball.

Plenty of people.

WengerEagle

Ishola

Fair enough if it’s between the two. I would prefer Zinchenko myself nearly on his versatility alone as you could plug him in at LB or CM.

I don’t see the real need for Tielemans with both Odegaard and ESR going to play central roles going forward.

Danny S

Pedro

He’s made 4 England appearances. He’s not been anywhere near a final of a major tournament.

I guarantee you, 100% he will be at someone like palace in 4 years time. You can take that to the bank.

Pedro

Ish, McTominay is an awful player. Tielemans had a bad season, but he’s most certainly not a passenger midfielder. If he was, Arsenal wouldn’t be tracking him.

Danny S

Pedro

Don’t you slag off potter and Bielsa on a regular basis as not being good enough for arsenal?

Ishola70

We know how this pans out on here anyway don’t we.

Some have got the hots for Tielemans because they sense stronger links that he will sign.

But if Arteta does sign Zinchenko then of course he then becomes the good player we need.

Arteta knows you see.

WengerEagle

”He’s an England international, a team that makes the finals of major tournaments,”

4 apps and yet to clock a competitive minute, come on mate. Being extremely disingenuous framing it that way.

LoveSausage

England has some fantastic attacking players but the team is far less impressive on the other side of the pitch. Big Head Maguire and Pickford are also England internationals (actual ones who get to play) and no one with two functioning eyes would call them top players.

Ishola70

Pedro

“If he was, Arsenal wouldn’t be tracking him.”

lol what does this mean?

This is the same Arsenal that signed Xhaka.

Don’t kid on that errors still can’t be made in signings .

All clubs can make errors in recruitment let alone Arsenal.

Tom

“Tom..you post sensible enough comments, but try not not to be too over self righteous on certain subjects. It’s not befitting.“ Jg, not self righteous. Dick-ish ,more likely, making fun out of dumb comments. Which , I should probably stop doing in fact, since we all make them. Feel free to ridicule mine when the need arises, as you just did up above if for the wrong reason. ”If he was, Arsenal wouldn’t be tracking him.”

See I don’t even know what this means Pedro. We have signed so many passenger midfielders in recent years. Lokonga has been a passenger when played and you can blame it on youth but the guy is 22 and not 17/18.

I expected a bit more from a £15m potential heralded signing by our Eagle-eyed scouts myself. We are anything but immune to signing dude midfielders not that Tielemans is a dud obviously.

Dissenter

Pedro,
Using England team invites for a player is not the new standard of player quality.
Danny Drinkwater won the league with Leicester and got three caps with England, does that make him decent.
AMN won FIVE England caps under this same England manager, that didn’t stop you in the past from going after AMN, did it.

I think it’s very obvious that we overpaid for Ben White by at least £25 million

Danny S

Arsenal signed Andre Santos. That must mean that he was top class because a team like arsenal were looking at him. If he
Wasn’t world class why would they bother?

Pedro logic.

raptora

I don’t like Tielemans. Watched him so many times. Yes, he has positives. No, I don’t like the player. Not cause we’ve been recently linked with him, I just don’t like him. Has the tendency to switch out of games, hide and not rise to the occasion. Solid player, not what I envision in our midfield.

Danny S

Pedro

Not sure what odegaard has done this season?

Made a lot of chances? Didn’t you slag Ozil off for that?

WengerEagle

For all the talk of improvement in the season gone as well, you could put down that marginal 8 point league position improvement largely down to by far our two key players in Saka and ESR dramatically improving their end product on the previous season.

Two 20/21 year olds.

Saka went from 8 PL goal contributions to 18 this season and ESR went from 6 to 12.

So an extra 16 direct goal/assist contributions between the two of them. That’ll bridge an 8 point gap in normal circumstances, yes.

raptora

Sambi sure, if we had went for Anguissa for even cheaper, we’d have a starter midfielder, not someone that “might” come good and dropped behind even Elneny cause we lost Vs Brighton and Southampton with him.

Danny S

Pedro

We may as well have finished 8th.

And Ben whites passing stats are abysmal, so if players that can play balls between the lines are a thing, then white isn’t one of those anyway.

Dissenter

We paid £16 million for Lokonga, turns 23 y/o in October
Brighton paid £20 million for Enock Mwepu from Salzburg, turns 24 in January

Who do you think has the higher ceiling? Who’s the player that gets you off your seat?

Lokonga has all to prove he’s good enough for Arsenal.
The mollycoddling of these project players has to stop.

raptora

Look, I like Gabriel, I like Tomi. It’s not like I’m on a mission to diss on every player that has signed with Arteta at the helm. Ode and White are kind of controversial signings. We could have done better or not spent in there at all and play Saliba and another CM instead of an AM.

Dissenter

I think Saliba could have easily done everything Ben White did last season, whilst he was settling into the English game

…and we’ll have a proper central midfielder with one year league experience to boot
That £50 million should have gone into better purposes than taking off Brighton’s junior CB off them.
They didn’t even bother to replace Ben White. That was some beach dupe job, they did us.

raptora

What chances Pedro? He’s 40th in big chances created. Some midfielders came at mid season and reached his 6 big chances created. Half chances are a joke.

1 2 3 4
