SAKA MOVES TO THE NEXT LEVEL

by .

My WORD Bukayo IS looking absolutely exceptional modelling for Queens brand Aimé Leon Dore. What I love about this brand is it is perfectly attainable for frumpy men in their late 30s that have creative hobby and enough money to spend $400 on a slightly altered hat. Bigger picture here… this brand is a cultural phenom, the fact they are using Bukayo in their work speaks to his growing profile off the pitch.

Back to Arsenal…

You can ALWAYS tell how Arsenal are going to play after about 2 minutes of a game. Can the same be said about a transfer window? Borussia Dortmund has made 7 signings and spent €60m… Arsenal? We’ve signed one player from Sau Paulo and we’re being sued by Wolves.

Spurs are making big-name signings, incredible to see them making moves, bringing in a 33-year-old from Inter Milan on a 2 year deal for £180k a week. What I love about these brand name moves is they mostly tank, but without fail, there is always a loyal army of people ready to call the move intelligent. The last two big moves of post-32-year-old players I can remember were Willian, who was fresh off the back of a very strong season at Chelsea… he tanked. But there were a lot of people saying he was a great signing. Then there was Cristiano last summer, who people were celebrating as a cherry-on-top title charge of a signing. He scored goals, but his declining ability to press cost United big time, and they had to drop out of the Champions League.

I’m struggling to think of many older players that drop into the Premier League from other territories that really bang? Thiago Silva is probably about the only one that is really registering? Even Lio Messi dropped a level when he moved away from a club specifically built around him. For that matter, Gini W moved there as well and didn’t really do much last season.

Spurs clearly going for the ‘blow it all on the last two seasons of a fit Harry Kane and Son’ strategy. I’m here for it. I hope it’s costly, painful, and lacking in fruit.

Another club that might be running into difficulties appears to be Liverpool. A top 3 side in the world, no doubt, but reality is this seasone they blew the fine margins in the two competitions that truly matter. Sadio Mane is moving to Germany because he has one year left on his deal and word on the rumour mill is that Mo Salah is being offered just a 15% raise on his current deal and he might exit next summer for free. Why does that matter? Well, one of their best players is leaving, and the other won’t committ. That is disruptive in any system. What makes it even better is they aren’t getting Coutinho money in to help keep the train moving when they’ve gone.

There are some fun stories about ‘nearly’ signings going around. Noa Lang, the exciting Dutch winger plying his trade at Brugge reckons we moved for him. That would indicate quite strongly that we are looking for additional output from wide positions, Lang managed 15 assists and 9 goals, he’s only 22 years old, would come at a decent price.

The biggest story about who we will be signing this summer still seems to be Gabriel Jesus, I think the Athletic say he’s the best pressing forward in the world. I understand that he is top talent, I understand that he’s won big things, I am just really worried that this move is one that you need a graph to prove out. I had people in the comments on this site saying he was actually really good in the air… listen, he scored 9 goals in 22 games as a centre forward for City this season, 4 of those came in one game, prior to that, he was trailing Lacazette for numbers. The season prior, he made 38 appearances as a centre forward and scored 12 goals.

What are the basics here?

He’s played a lot of a games as a centre forward

He hasn’t got a prolific scoring record at 25 and he regularly underperforms his xG

He’s exiting the best creative system in the world and coming to a very junior one

City has been trying to replace him for two season with: A BIG TALL STRIKER

Still, the summer is early, there are options on the market, let’s see where this goes and how we try and address our weaknesses.

Giroud and Laca may have worked better than Auba Laca. Annoyingly Giroud proved he still had a few seasons at the high level left in him and we never replaced and still need his aerial ability

“He’s( Lacazette)a flop, let’s call a spade a spade.”

Oops

WengerEagle

Lacazette was a flop. Not a spectacular flop, more a disappointing one that had his moments.

76 goals in over 200 is a very poor return considering a fair few of those were penalties. And his £50m fee goes against him on top of that too, no fault of his own but come on it counts towards it.

If we apply the same rule to Pepe he wasn’t as big a flop but he is because he cost £72m and not £25m.

WengerEagle

Habesha

Mane has scored above 20 league goals once in his entire career and he is 30.

Not sure how you can pencil him in for 25+ Bundesliga goals on the back of that.

WengerEagle

Just looked there and it was actually 71 goals in 206 apps Laca’s record for us.

10 pens means only 61 of those were from open play. There are midfielders with better scoring rates than that.

Nigel Tufnel

Habesha, Pierre,

What has always impressed me about about Nketiah is that he scores so many different types of goals. Rare for a young player.

Those numbers are grim for an Arsenal #9.

Laca, Ramsdale and Pepe – £150 000 000 down the toilet, I am afraid. Bought by different managers/ executives – but still mediocre in everything about them – except the purchase price. We simply do not buy well these days- especially since D. Dein left. And its getting worse- if you look at the links. Tielsman £ 35 000 000 ( a right footed version of Xhaka- but without a suspect temperament) Jesus £35 000 000 – a player City dont really want or they would be keeping him. Not going to make inroads on the top teams- if the… Read more »

Nkunku has scored 33 open play goals this season alone and he is not a ST.

Terraloon

Ramsdale for Arsenal in the PL over one season

Played 34 let in 39 and 12 clean sheets

So 1.14 goals a game on average and a clean sheet every 2.83 games

Kepa for Chelsea in the PL over 4 seasons

Played 80 ,let in 96 and 26 clean sheets

So 1.2 goals a game and a clean sheet every 3. 07 games

WengerEagle

Sal

1 in 2 is passable if you have other facets to your game. Really though if you want to be competing at the top end you need a 2 in 3 ST leading the line.

TH14 averaged 2 in 3 his entire PL career for us. And even taking the goals out of the way in a vacuum he was 10 times the player Laca has been.

Lacazette is/was a good midtable PL level ST at best.

WengerEagle

It is a shame that we never signed Vardy in 2016.

Nigel Tufnel

I wanted to say also that no matter what profile of CF we may bring in, we won’t be missing an option for different types of goals. I’d prefer to bring in a big boy striker, for most contrast in style, but Eddie can cover a lot of needs. I really think he has a higher ceiling than anyone expects.

raptora

Why are we comparing Kepa with Ramsdale? I don’t think Ramsdale is all that but Chelsea’s defence has been solid for almost 20 years straight.

WengerEagle

Gabriel Jesus gets my vote if it is remotely possible.

Rate him over Tammy, Vlahovic, Nunez, Toney, Schick, etc.

salparadisenyc

“Lacazette is/was a good midtable PL level ST at best.”

Agree hence the serviceable label, mostly because Arteta extracted a bit out of him after he was shot. Rare to see a player fall that far he was a shambles this season.

London Gunner and I used to debate Lacazette to no ends, I was opposed to signing him think I even labeled him the French Darren Bent in his Villa days.

WengerEagle

Sal

2 open play goals in the PL this season. Fair to say Laca fell off a cliff from being ok at the back end of last season.

This season he has genuinely been as bad as famous names like Chamakh and Bendtner.

2 league goals from open play!!! At least Chamakh scord headers the odd time.

salparadisenyc

“It is a shame that we never signed Vardy in 2016.”

Its a shame we never signed Suarez in 2013, Leicester would not have a title i’d hazard a guess.

raptora

French Darren Bent, I remember that. Turns out it was a proper comparison after all.

WengerEagle

I still laugh when I remember that Darren Bent went for more money than Barca paid for still great Henry in 2007.

£16m even in ’07 for a 30 year old TH14 was gross underpayment. Kind of got forgotten about because we were much better the next season without him.

Foxy

Laca like Pepe was never cut out for the PL.

It was clear Laca’s legs had gone mid last season. He should have been sold and replaced last summer so just another Edu and Arteta screw up.

Terraloon

raptora Why are we comparing Kepa with Ramsdale? I don’t think Ramsdale is all that but Chelsea’s defence has been solid for almost 20 years straight. See there’s the things Kepa really only played consistently for Chelsea over 2 seasons. Wenger Eagle that’s high praise for Gab Jesus.

I think he’d fit in perfectly for what Arteta wants us to do.. mad pressing and quick, city style passing.
He’ll add so much even if not up front. Imagine him in this squad instead of Pepe,Lacazette or a Willian. Massive upgrade.

I hope we can convince him to come. I know he likes Arteta, but CL and salary play a bigger part in the decision. I hope we dial up the cash.

salparadisenyc

Darren Bent what anomaly.

I like Jesus whats not to like has it all just needs a proper #9 roll as many have stated.

Not convinced Arsenal/Arteta have the pull to bring him in with whats on market and other clubs needs. Be shocked if Champions league club don’t pounce like Bayern with Lewa leaving regardless of Mane coming thru.

I keep forgetting Hickey is a leftie. The lad uses his right a lot. Clearly ambipedalness is a running theme with Arteta’s fullback. I’m not sure how much of a difference that makes to our phases of play. Hopefully someone can explain that aspect to me. As for Hickey himself, I’ve watched two of his games. Which isn’t a lot but it gave me an impression of him. Like Tavares, he’s VERY raw (as is expected for a 19 year old). Giroud should have been in compliment to a main striker with us, he cannot be relied on as a main striker.

I will never forget the 14 odd games he went without scoring for us. He regularly went on little dry spells.

No doubt he is a quality plan B striker and has proven so but he isn’t a number 1.

bang on with your Giroud commentary…he made perfect sense as a second fiddle, when tactical changes were required, but from a top dog perspective he made about as much sense as Wenger trying to shoehorn Ozil or Ramsey out wide…just another example of revisionist history by those who seem to forget the circumstances of that particular time…if only we had showed some real intent when Sanchez was carving up the League, we could have won a couple titles when several of the big boys were experiencing some rather unsettled times

salparadisenyc

With you on that Naija, some rose tinted glasses where Giroud is concerned. He was one of those streaky strikers, had runs of games where he couldn’t hit a barn door.

People have been mentioning the 2015/16 season and our failure to capitalise as Leicester took the title. What has been forgotten is that Giroud went 15 league games without a goal in the second half of that season arguably costing us our chance.

Habesha Gooner

Pierre A fair enough answer. I am surprised at how good Eddie is because I haven’t seen a lot of the qualities he showed this past season before. Holding up the ball wasn’t his quality. Neither was dribbling to find space to shoot. He was always struggling before this past season with his touches and finding space. I am pleasantly surprised at his improvements. We ve forgotten how we use to look over to our neighbors at Drogba, Rooney etc when Giroud was starting for us. He’s won a bunch of trophies since he left us and revisionism seems to have set in for his sake. Sometimes it feels like some Arsenal fans have a 3 year memory span.

Naija+soccer

We were so close to winning the league in recent seasons gone by, we were often missing a top striker to close the deal.

07/08 for example, we missed out on the league by just 4 points. The Leicester city year we finished behind them with 10 points. Imagine having a top striker. When you see us finishing the league nowadays 20-30 points behind the league winners, it put in perspective how close we were in those days.

The Real Vieira Lynn

Raptora

that was largely predicated on tactics…not to mention, the argument became incredibly skewed in Giroud’s direction when the national team decided to go with a more traditional target man, which doesn’t mean that Laca wasn’t good enough, he simply didn’t fit the script…this is likewise why they chose Gignac as his back-up…of course this whole situation could have played out vastly differently if Benzema had been in the mix all along

Serge, Raul de Tomas. He subbed Morata tonight. He made a fool of Ruben Neves with a sweet, sweet nutmeg, completely embarrassed. I’ll correct myself – it wasn’t the summer but the winter when he was our back up plan for Vlahovic that also didn’t happen.

De Tomas is quality but he is nearly 28 I believe.

Then again he could be a late bloomer Vardy/Di Natale type. Only really burst onto the scene in the past 2 years.

Ideally you would sign Gabriel Jesus but RDT as an alternative wouldn’t be a bad signing if Jesus as expected goes to a CL club.

WengerEagle

Morata would just be a depressing signing, lol.

Jesus is 5″9. I mean that is not even that short for a forward player and while he is is not built like Tevez, he isn’t exactly slight.

Rooney
Aguero
Tevez

no one is disputing that a “shorter” striker/forward can’t succeed, but when you have two of them, as Eddie is likewise listed at 5’9, that’s a bit more problematic from a tactical flexibility standpoint, especially if you take into account MA’s predilection for crosses from wide positions

Signing him was a great idea to compliment a world class CF, not to replace one as we saw with RVP leaving.

Vieira surely Tielemans replaces Xhaka in the starting 11

If we are signing any CMs to sit on the bench behind xhaka then next season is a write off because nothing has been learned. But I don’t believe we’d be looking at a pretty high profile PL player like Tielemans to sit on the bench.

Him, partey and Ode is pretty good and swap aids for an informal ESR and it’s probably better again

Giroud had very good technique but was woefully slow

Wenger Eagle
Rooney was 5”9’ high and 5”9’ wide . Certainly a force of nature and I’d guess as a teenager probably a lot stronger than his peers and excellent centre of gravity.
As he gets older he’ll have to fight the fat man escaping out of the younger athletic body

Vera “I’m far from daft and much like your speculative claims about Eddie, Eriksen, Ozil and the Loch Ness Drogba, you would be wise to never underestimate me…the fact that you don’t take any ownership over your proclivity to take the path less travelled comes across as rather disingenuous…just saying” Now there’s a daft comment if ever I’ve seen one. Fancy you getting your knickers in a twist because i light heartedly said ” don’t be daft” . Some people may be smart but lack common sense and are full of their own self importance, i would say you come… Read more »

I love Saka, we all do. It’s not just his footballing abilities it’s also the way he conducts himself. He is, without doubt, a truly decent young man. There are few players who make it look effortless when they have the ball at their feet, he is one of them. He plays on the front foot and always looks at creating things for his team. Unfortunately, I don’t think he’s playing for the right kind of manager. That’s right, I personally feel that Arteta will be a detriment to Saka’s future progression. I also include our other youngsters here who… Read more »

You’ve called me daft on many occasions over the years but I don’t hold it against you.

Have you been out on the golf course over the bank holiday?⛳️ 🍻

Vera “tbh, here’s some things this organization can do to both show intent and change the culture for “real :(1) flip the script when it comes to commonly-held narratives regarding the novice nature of our managerial and administrative teams by bringing in a few individuals of consequence…the fact that what’s currently on offer is eerily reminiscent of the previous regime, when Wenger surrounded himself with rather inconsequential “yes” men, isn’t a good look and simply allows skeptics to logically lean into a negative narrative that already has legs…more importantly, it just makes sense from a footballing perspective (2) get rid… Read more »

Gonna go to war with those cunt slugs today

They keep eating my asiatic Lily before it can grow
It’s beautiful

I’m going to get a hanging basket today and re-plant it, high up, where the cunts wouldn’t move their lazy slow slimy arses near it
And any of those fuckers I see near it are getting salted into oblivion

I like your deviation from the football talk.

I have a problem with next doors cats.

You angry with the slugs because they eat your Lily or because they’re brown?
You can be honest with us.

Love it Freddie.

Or is it because they’re just lazy f*kin homeless snails who’ve never done a day’s work in their lives?
