SIGN THEM UP

I don’t need a POWER MAC 7000 built for the elite designers of the world when I’m at work, but I ask for one because I’m at that stage in my career where that is my god-given right. I use two programs, e-mail and notes to write things. How can I have a machine of this power and it cannot run those two items concurrently? Who is building the Apple Mac that can handle an e-mail program? I would buy that machine.

That does not segue me into any sort of Arsenal content. So let’s get cracking.

BIG MO has signed another extension at Arsenal. I think most people that have watched him this last month can concur a few things:

  1. The guy has improved his game, he takes more risks with his passing, he executes tactics really well, he can do a job (99th percentile for pass completion).
  2. Our collapse this season wasn’t anything to do with him.
  3. If he’d played Palace, Southampton, and Brighton we might have exited with more than zero points

Arsenal fans are going to need a bit of maturity this summer when it comes to assessing our squad needs.

  1. There are finite funds
  2. Not every player in your squad can be competing for a first-team place
  3. We need some experience

Mo Elneny played 800 minutes this season. Of the last 7 games in which he clocked pure 90s, we won 5 of 7. Those wins included West Ham, Chelsea, and United. Out of the other two games, one was against Spurs in which we went down to 10 men. The other was the Newcastle game, in which he made 35% of all our progressive passes that day.

This is his radar.

He is good enough. Europa League is not the Champions League. The Egyptian Pirlo in that competition will be absolutely fine.

Bigger picture here is what do people want from that position? What level of player do people see us signing that will be happy with 800 minutes? Someone said to me the other day ‘GUNDOGAN’… like, come on man, you think he’s coming to Arsenal to take over from Big Mo?

We need to save pennies where we can.

Eddie signing on for us could be absolutely huge and another penny saver. This is how League One Eddie stacks up against players in the top 5 leagues in Europe.

This is who his numbers compare to in Europe.

I still have people in our Youtube videos saying ‘HE’S NOT GOOD ENOUGH’ and that my friends is addiction to the new. They’d rather us sign someone from the Austrian League that has a nice comp than the kid in our starting 11 dropping numbers like that at 22 years old. It is BAFFLING. There are definite benefits to unearthing gems in faraway leagues, but always remember the Brendan Rodgers Fan Club telling us all last summer that Bertrand, Soumare and Patson Daka were the next level and clearly showed that Arsenal had fallen off.

Eddie scored the same number of PL goals as Patson. Where are those Brenda fans today?

Tying Eddie down gives us another Hale-Ender in the squad and it keeps £25m safe. If I were Eddie’s agent, I’d tell Arsenal that I want an exit clause in my deal that says I can go for £10m next summer if I don’t get 20 starts next season. It’s win-win that way.

Our focus needs to be on adding first-team quality to the midfield so we can deal with Thomas Partey injury issues and it needs to deliver us some goals to the forward line in the shape of a near world-class forward and possibly a winger that can replace the sure-to-be-exited Nico Pepe this summer.

Everything else from there looks like bonus signings.

Competition for Gabriel feels like it’s going to depend on moving someone out, but it’d be great if we could land a Tomiyasu like talent there, or even a loan for a season for a seasoned vet like Umtiti.

Our left side needs something to happen to it quite urgently. We don’t have a reliable 50-game-a-season player there and we don’t have an experienced enough deputy. You’d imagine there’s a chance we totally rebuild the left side of our defence because Tierney exiting the first team correlates very nicely with our demise as a team.

Right, short post today because that is every piece of content I have.

Arsenal’s new position

Tom

For all the stats presented on this forum almost daily the one I’ve yet to see is the personal wealth comparison for the PL club owners.
A cursory google check might tell us Kroenke is the richest of the bunch and by a large amount, outside of the two oil country sovereign funds of City and Newcastle.
How is it then that we have to pinch pennies instead of supporting our generational manager to the max, considering the view expressed by Pedro has been we are extremely ambitious as a club?

The Eddie Nketiah saga is an interesting one.
Do I think he can be a major asset for Arsenal……Yes, I do.
Do I think, given the right system and back up, he can consistently get us 20+ goals a season? Most definitely.
My problem though is this. Why did it take our generational coach so long to act? When Aubameyang was clearly switching off, why didn’t Arteta bring Eddie into the fray?

It was pretty obvious to me that Eddie will get you goals.

It’s in his DNA.

InsideRight

Tom, the Kroenkes want to make money from the club, hence all the mentions of making the club self sustaining. They are not like the other owners who variously want their spending to generate positive PR, or garner success that helps to massage their egos.

We were told the Emirates would mean we could compete with Europe’s elite. The goalposts have been moved a long way since then.

My biggest wish, factoring all incomings and outgoings, is that Arteta will learn to utilize the whole flipping squad. Those 3 games we lost on the trot.. especially against Southampton, was a real kick in the teeth. With better rotation and squad management, we’d definitely have eked out 3rd and had Partey, Tierney and Tomiyasu to see us over the line. Nketiah would definitely have at least 10 league goals by now had he been bled in in January.

shad

Osimhen or Jesus?

Akinzo

I am still reeling from the effects of our inability to make the Top 4. However, I am not going to drown myself in that negativity. I feel the club is steadily going on the right trajectory. How many predicted doom this time last year and are we relegated now? How many thought the Kroenke’s would provide as much money as they did last year? For a long period here the topic was: “how has that signing moved the needle for us? I still laugh at the ridiculous comments about how terrible Ramsdale was at his previous clubs or how… Read more »

Mo Elneny hitting a purple patch at the end of the season that luckily for him coincided with any potential new contract offer, hmm ok, well played! Personally I don’t see any real growth in his game, just the play of someone that new they were playing for their future and so had to change it up a little. Lokonga’s confidence was shot so it wasn’t too hard for an experience international like Mo to displace him. A one year deal with an option of another, fine as long as he is aware he’s competing with Lokonga for the 3rd/4th… Read more »

I just can’t see how we can persuade Eddie to stay as a ‘number 2’ striker…..clearly he can only be a number 2 at best but surely he wants first team football, not 10-20 games a season? We could soften the blow of course by giving him 120k a week but I hope to God we don’t blow that sort of money on Eddie!!

Ernest Reed

The question is does Eddie want to return? And if so, at what price? Someone is in the drivers seat for this one and it’s clearly not AFC. I’m going to go back to it again and again because it remains a very real concern….exactly when does Arteta begin to trust his players, all his players? And is he honestly willing to rotate his squad rather than red zone his “trusted’ players? If Eddie had been given legitimate opportunity to prove his worth then this discussion is never necessary. That still sits with one person only and his track record… Read more »

Eddie compares to Christopher Nkunku? Pedro I want to believe that was an error. Nkunku had 34goals and 20 assists in 51 games this season. The guy scored the equalizer in the DFB-Pokal final after his team went down to 10 men at the 57 minute helping his steam to win a trophy. Eddie signing is good but don’t let us reinvent what he has done this season. In the game against spurs I didn’t see Eddie doing that for us (even though it is unfair to demand this). Funny, that Emery wanted Nkunku at the time and many turned… Read more »

Think there’s plenty of questions to be answered over the summer ( when is there not tbf) What do we think our level will be this window ? Can we convince players to skip a year of UCL with the vision that we’re progressing to be there next year or do we have to dine at the second table. How much bigger do we need our squad to be with Europe & hopefully longer cup runs next year ? & on top do you opt for quantity or quality, can we build out genuine depth in just one window. Pedro, I thought that we were looking for a strong, athletic striker who was good in the air? Don’t get me wrong, I like Eddie, but the stats you published show that he’s the polar opposite of good in the air. So are we going to change style when he plays or are we going to take an entirely different approach (i.e. stop lobbing in crosses when we don’t have a target to aim for)? Interesting to see reports that amongst others Chelsea, Spurs, Newcastle and United will all be spending £150m plus this summer. It’s going to be a… Read more »

It’s time we recognised and welcomed the sea-change in Stan Kroenke’s thinking. Whether it was Josh, or complete ownership of Arsenal, his intention now is to ensure the Club rejoins the elite. Josh has stated this loud and clear. For Josh it’s become a way of proving himself to the sports world. For Arsenal is a global brand. Not any club, but THE Club.

To get to the point, it’s become a personal ambition. And when something is personal, money is less of an issue. Which is why Arteta/Edu will be given the cash to get the players they need

Habesha Gooner

I am perfectly fine with Elneny staying. If Lokonga improves and he shows the first half of the season form then Elneny will be there to guarantee that. 4th/5th choice will be between Sambi and Elneny. And knowing our luck some injuries will happen. I am really happy with Eddie staying though. He has proven me wrong on the capabilities he has. Realistically we were never going to bring in two forwards plus a winger. Even if we did, the 2nd CF would never be as good as Eddie. Plus he will cost money. Holtek from Czech apparently was our… Read more »

I’m with Pierre on Eddie.
I personally feel he’ll grab you a hatful of goals if he’s given the chances and opportunities.
I like the way he tries things. Against WHU he was trying to bend them in from 25 yards. Even against Spuds he tried to chip Lloris.
He has great reactions, anticipation and natural instinct BUT, he needs to be shown love and that he’s valued.
Those that remember Ian Wright Wright Wright can see similarities in his abilities. If he’s 50% as good as Wrighty, I’ll be more than happy.

So under Arteta we’ve offered fresh terms to Xhaka, Elneny and now apparently Nketiah is set to sign up for around 100,000 a week. Holy fuck and people wonder why we are where we are.

You would like to think Eddie will go into the new season confidence high , knowing he is wanted by the club and fans, that must be a big surge through him. I agree that with a run of games he will score and be a new Ian WWW

Graham62

Marko

I agree 100% with your views on GX and, to a degree, Elneny, but, for me, Eddie is a natural talent who could become a major asset.

Eddie has a mini purple patch of a handful of goals and suddenly he’s handed a new 100k a week deal, the 14 shirt and the answer to our ST problems.

Unless he is our back-up ST option but even at that, 100k a week is hefty for that kind of role I would have thought.

Sounds about right for the way we have been run in recent years, yep.

Roma and Mourinho very jammy on their way to win this Tinpot trophy.

Feyenoord played them off the park, just a shame that they have Troy Deeney’s younger brother up top that has two left feet as it happens.

I’d give so far as to say that Joe Kinnear had Wimbledon playing more attractive football and that’s not hyperbole. Yet I love the winner in Mourinho, every top coach needs a bit of that win at all costs mentality.

Long time pal, keeping well I hope?

Yeah this wasn’t even a classical Mourinho performance tbh, thought Roma were sloppy defensively throughout an a team with even a little more ruthlessness than Feyenoord would have put them to the sword. That LF Sinisterra for them looked handy I thought.

Mourinho celebrations were pretty muted and to be fair to him he has won the CL twice and even the EL with Utd so this Cup is small potatoes to him, probably means more given he has declined to such an extent and Roma don’t win trophies mind.

Venga, Dani

100k for Eddie is crazy based off of what I’ve seen. I only hope he is a monster in training and the coaching staff is convinced he can really kick on. Because on the other side of the madness that is paying him 100k a week is the fact that he is young, English, and if he has a solid season and bags 10-15 goals his market value will be absolutely insane.

Fingers crossed this isn’t just the latest iteration of Wenger putting the dross on gigantic contracts (Chambers, Jenkinson, etc etc).

IAT-Robbie

“Feyenoord played them off the park, just a shame that they have Troy Deeney’s younger brother up top that has two left feet as it happens”

LMAO

Interestingly, that guy is the top scorer in the Conference League. He didn’t look it tonight. Congrats to Roma, they’re a very admirable club, manager aside.

Pedro he took his chance well, that’s all you ask in business and sport well done to the Lad he has a high ceiling as well, putting the ball at the back of the net is the hardest job, he has that talent naturally, all we need is a top striker now and we have two good goal scorers. Oh and he is English
Matteta and Eduardo cost 30m between them Eddie pisses on them

WengerEagle

Not to say we cannot/won’t improve ourselves but it’s bold to predict a steep Spud decline is all I am saying based on little evidence.

And I expect Utd to improve with Ten Hag who is a proper manager. Chelsea only need to rectify their ST position to get up and running again to compete.

Mr Serge

Did you see who’s record Mourinho equalled tonight? Trap. I never realised he had that much success in fairness. Years of watching his turgid Irish teams blinded me, how can you win 5 European trophies and then build a team around Keith Andrews and Glen Whelan? Football is a crazy game.

IAT-Robbie

All of Mourinho’s final have been park the bus affairs. If it’s not broken, why fix it?🤷‍♂️

Venga, Dani

Agreed Serge – I am a huge Eddie fan! I just think 100k/week is a pretty gigantic contract for such a small sample size is all. Especially given our recent history with contracts.

On the other hand, I am sympathetic to the argument that we don’t want to lose him for free. I actually have huge hopes for Eddie as he has that one characteristic that you can’t teach: being in the right place at the right time. Think he has a high ceiling considering some of the late bloomer strikers (Giroud, Vardy, etc).

Mr Serge

Venga the way to look at it is how much would he cost to replace a second striker that’s at least 15 to 20m fee plus sign upon plus wages keeping a known entity that’s got a high ceiling is a no brainier

Youdaman

Read in the athletic that Arsenal are the
3rd most innovative sports franchise in the

Pedro would know more on this stuff.

Venga, Dani

Hard to disagree with that Serge. For that reason I am pretty happy with this piece of business.

Pedro In the 18 PL games since Kulusevski and Bentancur were signed Spurs have scored 43 goals. Just 26 in the 20 games prior to that. It’s clear to see they significantly improved from February to the end of the season. Your predictions do not take any of this into account. ”it was bold to predict Ronaldo would be a shocking signing for them and I did that and where did we land?”

I’m not sure how much of this season you can pin the blame on Ronaldo. Yes overall he hasn’t been a great signing but a shocking one? 17 PL goals and 24 overall qualifies that statement to be massively over the top.

Utd’s dressing room is cancerous and most of their group have downed tools on multiple managers now. It’s short-sighted to equate this season’s implosion to Ronaldo’s arrival alone.

Mr Serge

Venga double bonus

So Tammy or osihmen ?

IAT-Robbie

“I just think 100k/week is a pretty gigantic contract for such a small sample size is all”

It is, His agent probably used Ben White as a reference point. Ben is being paid close to that figure despite having only one EPL season of experience before his transfer.

Venga, Dani

Dont know enough about Osimhen TBH but Tammy seems to have gone from strength to strength. Cant imagine we’d pry him away after just one year though.

bacaryisgod

Can’t understand the moaning about Eddie and Mo. We need a bigger squad and both have performed well for us this season. Renewing Eddie with the signing bonus is the equivalent of signing a young, talented strker for 17m and paying him 50k a week on a 5 year deal. Very reasonable. As for Mo, it sounds like a short-term deal and he’s a squad player who can come in cold and do a solid job for us. He’s our James Milner except much younger. Unlike Arsenal fans who manufacture excuses for why Arsenal can’t make top 4 but that Spurs had better chances than us. Then these same fans think Kroenke is the only problem.

EdTheREd

I love how just before Super Mick was given new contract (in January) there were rumours about City being interested in his services, same thing happened with Eddie and interest from Liverpool,

According to today’s papers Chavs will have £200m to spend this Summer and even Spuds will have £150+m to strengthen their squad. Newcastle will probably spend more than those two. Newcastlle is 3rd, behind Liverpool and City in “Since New Year” table.

Where does that leave Arsenal? In Europa League for next few seasons, if we’re lucky.

Once again, my comments regarding Eddie aren’t meant to slag off this rather industrious young player, who just happened to put in his most productive performances when he needed it most, but to think that his re-upping constitutes a show of intent is both disingenuous and exceedingly problematic, especially if assurances were given…for me personally, once we lost the leverage play game, I would have let him dip his toe into the open market, so I could better assess his true market value…if he signed elsewhere for more money, no biggie, but if there was lukewarm interest in him, due… Read more »

100k a week for a 22 year old English goal scorer is absolutely fine business.

He’ll be on more than Richarlison, Calvert Lewin and Ollie Watkins to name but a few and he’ll be a back up and if he goes back to be subpar we’ll be stuck with him because of the massive wages. It’s a shocking deal

Freddie Ljungberg

It’s funny how an inexperienced English striker with an extremely short purple patch is absolutely worth 100k a week, but the most sought after winger in Europe that went for 72m and got 140k a week is a crime against humanity.

I’m fine with the pirlo contract extension It’s 1 year for a player who is fine with being 4th choice competing for 2 spots in the team. He’s calm and dependable and adds experience and maturity to the overall squad. He’s not signing up to be a weekly starter – he’s there for occasional rotation and for emergencies as well as for small competitions like the league cup. He’s also not on high wages. Also it usually happens to this club I guarantee you that this summer you’ll see better strikers in Europe move for less than what we’ll pay Eddie. Look if it was between 40-60k a week okay there wouldn’t be an issue but 100k is far too much

Aaron

Does not matter if Eddie or any other top cf signs with us if they do not get service or we continue to cough up goals with our young injury plagued defense.

Big chances created has us at 17th as many other have stated before, either fix that, the injury plagued defense and obtain a scorer (Jesus aint’t that) or it will be kaput for our season and Mikel.

I’d lean towards trying to retain Eddie. It could be a spot filled with less expenditure than having to buy. I know we’ll get someone else up front that hopefully Arteta can integrate.

Why do we always give extensions when a player hits a purple patch? Up until the run of games that Eddie had, the club and arteta was thinking of letting him go.

I would think a manager would have seen enough from the time he is here to know which player he wants and he doesn’t. Not take a u turn at the last hour and have to overpay someone to stay. Another great arteta moment.

Gonsterous

Please stop these pathetic excuses for arteta. You said the same thing last season. Kane and Son won’t have another injury free season. They won’t have the same scoring form.

Son has been making 30+ pl appearances for the past 5 years. He’s not an arsenal crock. He and Kane are physically in the xhaka department because they don’t over exert themselves in every attack. They are intelligent players who know when to push down on the gas pedal.

Even United spending loads of money does not ensure success. But to be constantly negative when we’re early in a new cycle, gets tiresome. I’m critical of Arteta and the club sometimes, but I’m hopeful from our position right now, because that’s how I choose to live. The tone of some… Read more »

I wonder when Pedro will apologize to Conte for talking shit about him all season long only for him to snatch away top 4 from us in the end.

**Ooops I thought the second brace was Man Utd, looking back it was Leeds. Although he should have got a goal against Man Utd… it was narrowly chalked off side.

A brace is a brace!
